- A couple in a cult prepares for the end.
SOULS OF TOTALITY is used with permission from Richard Raymond. Learn more at soulsoftotality.com.
A loving couple shares a quiet, isolated life together, filled with hidden wells of warmth and affection. But they face a moment of choice as a change in circumstance -- and a solar eclipse -- will end their life together as they know it.
Director Richard Raymond, alongside co-writers Kate Trefey and Ben Bolea, has crafted a uniquely engaging love story with remarkable visual panache and skill. Shot during a total solar eclipse in August of 2017, it evokes a powerful fulcrum moment of transformation and choice between a couple.
The film's initial selling point may be the central performance by lead actress Tatiana Maslany, who won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2016 for her shapeshifting roles in the fan-favorite ORPHAN BLACK. Both she and actor Tom Cullen are superb here, making each moment and beat count in terms of building character, forwarding the narrative or evoking the humor, connection and conflict between them. With such richly specific performances, the film juxtaposes its vaguely doomsday scenario with tremendous emotional resonance, creating a powerfully poetic and engaging experience.
Aiding the performances, the film also employs astonishingly precise and rich technique and craftsmanship. Beautifully sweeping wide camera shots and movements and luminous cinematography all work together to detail a world that is isolated yet warmed by the richness of the relationship within it. With its clear yet saturated tones and burnished highlights and shadows, the film's visual beauty makes it clear why it's so difficult for some to leave it, even when promised enlightenment or ultimate peace on the other side. As the film's haunting premise unfurls -- and the couple's situation is revealed more fully -- its unique syntax and atmospherics work together to add to its uncertainty, eerieness and tension.
Ultimately SOULS OF TOTALITY is a love story and a relationship drama that examines the role of a romantic connection and human love in the journey of spiritual growth. The genre often demands an arc and a story that challenges the central couple towards further closeness or intimacy, or a break away from one another. But when the moment of decision arrives -- aided by the totality of the solar eclipse -- the result is nothing less than achingly magical and soul-affirming. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
"I have to get back as fast as I can! I think I'll leave the car here and run!"
Adrenaline blocks the mind to rational thought and just says, "RUN".
Its written that way. It's a story, not real life.
@@TailorK9 Thank you so much for clearing that up. I just couldn't tell.
That really irritated me. Like drive bk and jump over the damn fence. Of course she had to hurt herself a bit to make the unnecessary run that much more challenging.
my thoughts exactly!!!
I had read that the reunion scene had to be timed perfectly and done in one take because it was filmed during the culmination of the actual total solar eclipse. They didn’t use special effects or special lighting. Amazing! Great film!
They had to use special effects to an extent. You can't just look up at a partial eclipse. The sun is still too bright. It looks just like looking at the sun on a normal day.
Ballwiz 23 I don’t know, it was very dark at the start of the scene, same as what you experience during a total solar eclipse, then it became bright as the sun passed beyond the point where the moon’s shadow was being cast. Maybe the filmmakers would like to weigh-in and clear this up? 🙂🙂
Ballwiz 23 In certain areas it actually gets dark like it did in the video. They even showed it on tv when it happened the last eclipse.
@@d.grouard6737 special lenses create special effects. You must not get to the movies often.
@@cortezyvonne Yeah I know. I took a road trip to one of those areas for the last one. But it only lasts about 2 minutes. That's the total eclipse. But during the partial you can't look directly at the sun for more than a few seconds without burning your eyes.
Making an actual total eclipse into the setting for a short film like this one was an amazing achievement. Which makes the film a new kind of experince, atleast to me. Beautiful storytelling!
best experienced in a dark room with headphones probably
I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first. I've never hear of such a thing.
Saw her name, thought about *'Orphan Black'* straight away. That was one of the best shows of the last 15 years.
Thank you , I was trying to recall what I'd seen her in. I watched a few eps of 1st season.
I absolutely love that show!
This was about a cult and eclipse nothing to do with orphans lol
@@ellamone9998 You are hopeless kiddo. Orphan black was a series a few years back. This girl starred on it
I loved her roles in ORPHAN BLACK!!!
The bodies disappearing at the end was a nice touch. A symbol of what they choose to give up for each other. To some people in the suicide cult, they have been brainwashed to think that they are attaining a higher being. While normal folks like us know that is simply untrue, the final scene juxtapose their personal choices, that they chose each other rather than the lies fed by these cults.
But do we really know its untrue. We cant really prove it to be honest.
But yes its illogical to believe its true.
@@LittleRainGames we do know that it is not true, but that was an artistic scene to contrast their beliefs and their choice.
SpacedogDDD - it was the dumbest thing in the film imo. It made the non-suicidal couple look like the crazy ones. To suggest that the suicidal people were the right ones and their bodies were actually whisked away to another place is ludicrous.
@@kickinitwithmydawg It has more nuance than that. The couple are a part of the cult. They are brainwashed. It might be that the bodies have departed for them, in their minds, whether or not it's true in reality. It would be what they believe, and the bodies missing symbolizes that they gave up departing in order to be together. They stayed, while their brethren left. Regardless of whether or not it is real in reality, the film is showing you what their reality is.
@@TylerTraverse So now the writers wants us to accept that this couple is still crazy even after their "breakthrough".
You want me to accept that these people still might drink the kool-aid after all....because after all...it's not suicide in their minds.
A minute after the shot ended they could have drank the kool-aid and "joined" their fellow crazies in death. Not my kind of story.
Tatiana in orphan black was exceptional. I still think about that show xx
Yes !!! I knew her face was familiar...
Why didn't she drive back
She couldn't drive back, she didn't have the key for the lock, that she was shown locking
@@evyedelman4297 but she still could drive to the gate and then walk the rest
@@u.r.886 yeah, you know characters in film can't seem to use common sense when time is of the essence. Plus damn directors like to build anticipation and leave you on the edge of your seat.
Yeah, I think if we were a test audience, our feedback would be that she needs to drive back. She could still be close to time if she used the vehicle, but it's distractingly annoying to see her be too late *because* she didn't use the vehicle. Perhaps they're trying to emphasise that she's abandoned the message that's on the tape in the car - but if that's the case, I think the cost of her getting out and running outweighs the (possible) symbolic benefit.
She's not comfortable with driving in reverse :p
Tatiana is amazing. Her clones in Orphan Black were an acting masterclass. This is a small glimpse at how good her acting is. She's also absolutely gorgeous and has the cutest smile. The lead actor in this is Tom Cullen, her husband IRL, one lucky guy! As far as this short film goes, I like to think they didn't choose not to go, they just chose to hold off to be with each other for longer. I choose to believe that they lived out their lives together for as long as they could before catching the last eclipse to the other side together. Awesome short film Tatiana and Tom! Wouldn't expect anything less from those two, though!
So. The cow was a sign that told her to "cow back" then..?! Lol
So he chickened out because his love for her is way bigger than his love for their cult haha
LMFAOOOOOOOO😂😂
I think they both cowtowd to their feelings myself...but that could just be me not drinkin the coolaid flavored milk!
A bit of bovine intervention to get her moo-ving, she had to really hoof it.
Guess that's why it sounds like they talk with w glass of milk not koolaid on their mouth in the end. hahaha
Great story, very well acted especially by Tatiana Maslany who nailed that scene where she was looking for her lovers body and then seeing him. The range of emotion there was exceptional. I really enjoyed it.
Wow!!! Excellent!!!
The body's gone at the end, only empty sheets left - they transcended, the lovers remained - powerful. Although I didn't understand why she ran back instead of driving the car.
Dramatic effect
No key for the lock once it was closed?
I freaking love her. Really enjoyed Orphan Black.
The fact that the man wasnt going to kill himself was predictable, but hey... i didnt expect all the others to just... vanish.
They vanished right??
Or at least i didnt saw the bodies.
They accended off into who knows where..
theyre right there. What are you talking about?
Every one under the sheets was gone. They had “ascended “. The girl’s boyfriend didn’t drink the cool aid so he stayed behind to be with her.
When the wind blew the sheets "after" the eclipse was past, there seemed to be no bodies anymore. At least I didn't see any.
@@SMaamri78 ,,,,, Socialism , collectivism, religious faith, = blindly following with out objective thought, but then ,"WHAT IF?"
The sound design in this is beautiful, haunting, and chilling all at once. The characters and acting are more compelling than high-budget films I've seen. That long-take shot with the eclipse is incredible, and the whole setup hints at something deeper without being so obscure we feel left completely in the dark. Incredible experience, I would recommend it to anyone.
Can’t people stop with the “better than the high-budget films I’ve seen” stuff? This are CZcams videos, they serve their roll. They aren’t cinematic movies. They are okay for short stories, that’s all!
@@Colin-Fenix lol what? Why, if it's true?
I see Tatiana Maslany, I click
SPOILER:
Well done! A suicide cult is a strange phenomenon. I am very glad the sheet shrouded corpses had disappeared in the final scene. This added mystery was important. Fine performances and filmmaking. Thank you!
I personally feel like the film would have been much more impactful had they stayed. Makes it feel... Not visceral enough.
What do you mean? Everyone was dead under their blankets except for the love interest of the girl..
@@jesussaves6625 @17:40 the shrouds are flat, I think. @17:47 a breeze reveals the cultists have indeed gone. (Or am I really missing something?)
@@tietjen666 I saw the same thing
Wow this cult theories are actually true!
Alot of short films I find have deeper meaning than most movies
You've been planning this for decades but you wait until the last few hours to send the dude to pick up the very specific "last meal" items from the local general store? And of all of the items requested, the whip-its are probably the most likely to actually be there.
Lol right
@@iMsOiNsO What little store with a cooler does not carry canned whipped cream?
Maybe they didn’t want temptation around “tainting” there cult until the last minute?
Damn cults. I had to watch because of Tatiana Maslany. But still...damn cults.
She's incredible.
This short was that and more
n ahesno she's always great in everything
The point that they disappear leaves you with like a feeling that they were right ??
Who will love me that deeply, that intensely and with that much passion ?
Ikr....do I have to join a cult, make a suicide pact then not do it ...I mean, at this point...I'm down if it's going to get me this lol

Reminds me of the Heaven's Gate cult sucides where they were going to die and be reborn on a spaceship that supposedly followed the Hale-Bopp comet in March, 1997. They supposedly were going to pass through Heaven's Gate and go to a 'higher' existence.
Who's to say they didn't went to a higher existence?
Daganisoraan
Oh they went. They went the way of farm animals.
Socialism , collectivism, religious faith, = blindly following with out objective thought I am old enough to remember that, and others like it, which were several.
@@delmusingle2338 no matter how long we live, we'll never see it all. SMH. People will believe anything but in the end it's their choice so I respect that as long as they don't try to force others to believe it to.
@@Dramadonia ,,,, But they will force belief or death.
That "guy who stayed behind" I actually talked to him. He's really nice. From the heaven's gates church. He runs the website.
What? Cult in real life? What's the point of mass suicide? Did their body really dissappeared? I'm so confused
I couldn't help but spend the last few minutes thinking "WHY would you not just turn the car around?!?"
the suspenseful drums where meaningless imo after she decided to run instead of drive back?! still could of worked with her turning the car around (maybe getting stuck in a pot hole then running or something)
For those of you who have been around a little longer, this film reminded me of the “Heaven’s Gate” suicide cult back in the 90’s. It’s so sad people fall for this kind of thing.
Having belonged to a cult when I was much younger, I can understand being part of a group and feeling called to do something insane. Fortunately I walked away just as the two young people did because I had some reasoning power still left! And she did not stay in the car because the gate was locked-that is why she climbed over the fence. They even showed the very heavy lock that she fastened on that gate as she left.
She covered a hell of a lot of ground on foot before she reached the gate, though.
Should have driven back to the gate though - would have saved her a lot of effort
I didn't recognize Tatiana Maslany until I saw her name it the credits! She is a phenominal talent! I hope she gets plenty of work because she has such an amazing range and nails it every time.
Ironically, Tatiana was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. I can totally see this happening in Sask. or Alberta. It's like our Utah&Texas of the north.
Meanwhile, Vive le Canada!
Standing in the field kissing among dead bodies so romantic
bodies disappear tho at end?
girl i know i know...
@Melchior Magni DID THEY REALLLLY !???? Hmph!
Tatiana Maslany is such an amazing, I tuned in to see her. But the story is so good I was completely into it by the end, and the end of this was fantastic I really enjoyed that.
4:17 Wait its the cult off the grey sweatpants?
I fell like someone gonna get woooosh'ed
They purple sweats were already a thing with the ufo cult remember? Crazy :)
I know that the films are very good, best I’ve seen in ages, and they rarely ever end with all your questions answered. The end of this has the viewer focused on the couple embracing and I wonder if anyone noticed that the bodies of the other cultists were no longer there and the sheet was lifted by the wind. I would love to read someone else’s take on the last scene of this video. Thanks!
Maybe the film budget ran out so they couldn't pay the extras to stay any longer?! 😉
Definitely noticed & no doubt purposeful. The sacrifice they made to be together 🤷♀️
Wow that one made me cry. Thank you for sharing this
WOULD IT NOT HAVE BEEN FASTER TO JUST DRIVE BACK?
DANG THERE BODIES DISAPEARD! guess they wasn't lying.
Give the man his whipits
Loved the very, very, very end. Great impact. I won't give it away.
Such a touching film and so beautifully executed!
Thanks as always ~ Amy xo 😘
Reminds me of the Heaven’s Gate cult.
I guess the cow is a symbol of divine intervention.
Nobody commenting on that final shot with all the bodies gone...? Lol.
I liked how some of the sheets blow away to reveal nothing underneath. Nice twist.
Always nice to find one that got past me, especially one as good as this one.
Thank you, Omeleto!
Very emotional. Crazy Cult. All those lives lost over nothing. I’m glad her lover thought it through. Good Short flick.
Seems to be inspired by the mass suicide of the Heaven's Gate cult members in 1997
I could have sworn this was a movie I had seen on the big screen.
Mad its so short.
Really good!!!
Why didnt she just drive back to save him why run ?
this one was a huge tear jerker
Glad to see that Henry Cavill's older, beardier brother is getting work xD
🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂😆 yh
So the world was going to end after the eclipse .
The boy would ascend to an afterlife due to the cult and the girl would be somehow saved on earth .
If they don't choose this they will die after the eclipse .
Well the boy and girl both chose dying together instead.
Now was the cult genuine , the sheets at last were empty which means the souls did ascend to an afterlife .
So this is the story choosing love over death .
Heart warming :)
That was brilliant.
One of the better one's I've seen
Wouldn't it make more sense to have driven the car back instead of getting out and running?....
WHY DIDN'T SHE JUST DRIVE BACK!!
i soo love her, recognized her straight away in the thumbnail. Shes amazing, cant wait to see SheHulk!
Semi-spoilers below the "read more"...
Couldn't help but think of Heaven's Gate when watching this. But gosh that ending was so good :')
I was worried it would be a tragic ending where the man had simply followed along. The breath of relief when the audio came back in with him asking her to finish her sentence. In the moments before, though, I was worried that 1. the hand belonged to the older man and 2. when it showed his face, he was yelling at her about having messed something up or that he was actively dying
Anyone remember Jonestown? ‘Heaven’s Gate’ cult, and Hale-Bopp comet?
Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious millenarian cult based near San Diego, California. It was founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite (1931-1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1927-1985).[1] On March 26, 1997, members of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group in a house in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. They had participated in a mass suicide, a coordinated series of ritual suicides, in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Hale-Bopp.
Just before the mass suicide, the group's website was updated with the message: "Hale-Bopp brings closure to Heaven's Gate ... Our 22 years of classroom here on planet Earth is finally coming to conclusion-'graduation' from the Human Evolutionary Level. We are happily prepared to leave 'this world' and go with Ti's crew."
Only watched this because of Tatiana. I wasn't disappointed. But to see her full potential, 2 words - Orphan Black! Thumbs up for Tatiana.
They: bye bus
Me in the bus: bye
At first i was thinking why didn't she stay in the car and drive back. But then the more i thought about it, the more it made sense. In extreme panic mode i think your brain would tell you to start moving in that direction as quickly as possible. Having to turn the car around (hopefully without getting stuck in a ditch etc) would just seem like to much of a delay (even if it was quicker in the end). Getting out and running would be the most direct course of action
This was phenomenal
I feel like the male lead was miscast. The writing calls for a young and naive guy who has spent his entire life in this Oregon cult. This dude looks and carries himself like a world-weary 40-something divorced father of 3 with a bit of a New York accent.
He was cast because at that time (2017) he was Tatiana Maslany's boyfriend. He is British and struggles with American accents.

Those weak of mind and spirit are ripe for the picking of such as Bernie and AOC, and Cults, and socialism in general. Lemmings.

Loved the sheets with no bodies underneath them
Why doesn't this have more views?
Imagine a cult who believe they will live forever and have banded together to maintain continuity and connection into infinity.
Great story but I never felt lonelier than after watching this...
Did not see that ending coming... like the one about the girlfriend meeting the boys parents on Game night, I did not see that ending come, I like it when it surprises me in ways I dont foresee!
Girl, if you were that much in a hurry to get back you might have wanted to use the car instead.
Don't you know?...running is always faster than a car.
Why would she run back instead of drive?
And why didnt she just put the truck in reverse ?
Confused. I thought I understood it, that they were just a cult carrying out a mass suicide. But then the sheets blew away, and the bodies were gone; She had just uncovered a few a little earlier looking for him...?! What?!
There are bodies underneath the sheets, they are just hard to see with the light of the eclipse. You can see the hands of the corpse on the last one she goes to before the guy she loves grabs her wrist.
debbie otava -Yes, during the darkness of the actual eclipse, there are bodies. But watch it again from the 16:56 mark. The sheets are clearly flat. Bodies are gone. And at the very end, when some blow away, there are no bodies underneath.
@@markread7333 Thats the beauty of short films. Not everything is always explained and there is room for interpretation. Its like jumping into a movie without seeing the beginning, & then getting a snippet, & also not seeing the rest of it. (My opinion). This was an absolutely beautiful story.
Obviously the cult was right
I was so focused on them that I didn't even notice the sheets. I interpret it as their love for each other, in the moment, is worth more to them than anything else. Even moving on to a "higher plane" isn't worth it if they can't be together. Everything else can fall away, so long as they have each other.
Why exactly did she run back instead of turning around the car?
What does one listen for when listening to the universe? How would I know that it is the universe that is speaking to me? Something to think about. Great short films Omeleto!
That was gut wrenchingly Brilliant..👍👏
