  • Leishmaniasis is a diverse group of diseases, all caused by single-celled parasites called Leishmania. Over 1 billion people worldwide are at risk of leishmaniasis at any given time; about 12 million people are infected at any one time, causing 20,000-40,000 deaths annually. The disease is recognized by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a major neglected disease of poverty that disproportionately affects populations in low and middle-income countries.
