Congratulations! I got my BSW in 2019 and just completed my MSW program as well this past spring! Currently in the process of applying for my ASW and taking some time for self-care. We'll see where things go from there, but I certainly know that macro practice is my passion after specializing in Administration and Community Development in my MSW program.

Iâve recently decided to follow in my love for helping people and for finally doing something with my life and with my appointment tomorrow with an advisor for my first time attending collage, I feel like social work will really call to me with my ability to use the tools my amazing therapist has given me. Towards the end of the video I remember my therapist telling me about a book called Atomic Habits and how if we do one percent a day everyday rather itâs brushing your teeth or waking up and eating breakfast that will count for a total of 365 perfect for a whole year, and so when we think we need to have big life goals we can look back at the small things we did and celebrate that rather than crashing and beating ourselves up over the big things we didnât accomplish. Anyway enough with the rambling I just find this video already helpful and it makes me realize that social work will be the right path for me rather than the cosmetology path members of my family have been keen on me taking.
I also recently heard of the 1% mindset from atomic habits & have been reminding myself of it often!! it really is a helpful way to celebrate small wins and also take small steps to reach big goals đđ good luck with all you've got coming for you in the future. you've got this!
I did the cosmetology cert!! I went to Lu Ross when I was 18 yrs old got top marks and guess what? NEVER USED IT. I they taught me makeup for film and TV, mature, runway, movie special effects etc. It is NOT easy to get consistent work! It's very hard to make a living, yes I did have lots of fun doing a lot of the makeup for the Brooks Institute film students and even got to be the MUA on set for someone who is now famous, but, it was 16 hours onset to only make a few hundred bucks. Most of my fellow peers now work at Sephora or the Macys makeup counters making the same they would have made self taught. I am not saying it's a waste of money for all, but it really was for me! I am finishing my undergrad degree in Psychology now at 34 and planning to apply to a MSW degree to become a LCSW, where I can make real money compared to how much I could make as a makeup artist, this was my experience, but if I can save someone from making the same mistake I did I will not pass up that chance!! I think you should follow your intuition and do the MSW degree!!

I went back to community college at 31 years old to pursue a degree in social work. I finished my associates and I am now at a university working on my BSW. I really enjoy the material so far. Good luck on your journey.

Hi Anastasia!! That is incredible. I've always been intrigued by hospital social work but have just about zero experience there. Right now, I feel like my dream jobs are either working in criminal justice like my field placement now or working in a school like my field placement last year just because I've enjoyed both so much. I've always known that I wanted to work with kids in some capacity and the yonger the better†But after my family went through my little cousin's Leukemia and speaking to the most incredible Mentor/Professor I have ever had the honor of working with, it was a decision that was a no-brainer that my life passion would be to work with children with cancer. t I've completed my BSW from Nepal and I'm planning to pursue MSW in the USA how can I work as a gerontology social worker what is the process could you please tell me about it.
I didnât realize that even with a masters, I only qualify for entry level positions.
Did you have older people in your cohort? I am nervous about doing my BSW and having to leave my decent-paying full-time job that feeds my family and pays my bills to complete an internship. Eeek!
I did have older people in my cohort! Some of my best class friends were moms working full time jobs hahah. Definitely look into the school youâre interested in because many are willing to work with you so you could maybe still keep your job or even complete your internship at your current employer if there are any licensed social workers there you could work with. Some people in my cohort were able to do extended field placements where it was half the hours per week but would take twice the length of time to complete but were able to stay employed with that schedule.

Hi Anna! I'm currently a recent grad (English major, Graphic Design minor) and I'm heavily considering getting my master's in social work. This past year has been the worst in terms of finding work, and something I've learned about myself is that I have a drive to do work that is meaningful. If I go for my MSW, I'd want to be a counselor for teens and/or work in a non-profit that focuses on working with young people. In my undergrad, I frequently second-guessed myself, knowing that counseling/social work was something that always deeply interested me, but I'm hoping it's not too late. Any advice for entering the social work world for someone who was a high interest but insecurities over if I'm actually qualified to get into a grad school?
Hi Machaela! To start -- 100% not too late. I found that going into my MSW program straight from undergrad, I was in the minority. Many people get their MSWs as they transition into a second career or after taking a year or two off after undergrad. With an English degree, an MSW will take two years full time. The first year is called the generalist year and it's where you learn the foundations of all things social work. And everybody is starting at the same point in those classes with the same insecurities and second guessing going on, but whichever MSW program you are in will build those skills up in you so you can grow in confidence to become the counselor you want to be.

Hi! Not sure if youâre gonna see this, but could someone with social anxiety study social work? I have social anxiety and class discussions arenât really my jam. Do you think this is gonna hinder my performance during university?
For class discussions, yes. Because it's a part of participation depending on the class.
I've found that social work professors are typically very willing to work with you! I think letting them know which parts you're worried about and also communicating what success may look like for you in class participation could be helpful. Obviously, some teachers may keep hard and fast rules about verbal class participation, but in my experience, I've encountered many more who are more focused on making sure you get what you're supposed to out of class rather than your method of participation. I wouldnât let that deter you away if it is a path you want to pursue because honestly many places to work value having male social workers because there can be a different type of relationship with some clients in a beneficial way. For example, Iâm currently working with teenage boys and while I can establish rapport with them, thereâs a different kind of connection when they can work with a male social worker, too.

some people do and some people don't!! either can work and set you up well for your future careers
Can you do an MSW while working FT?
it's possible! the hard part will be finding a field placement that can work with your schedule because most field placement options will be during normal business hours.
Hi, can you get a Job with just A BSW if not interested in MSW at the moment?
Yes! I recommend doing an internship during college to help get some experience. Thatsâs what helped me! I did Substance Use Counseling for a few months now Iâm working as a Careers Services Advisor in a private college!
Did you have an ASW before going into a BSW, and if so, do you know if someone with an associate in psychology can transfer into a BSW and how to do all the credits you earn go to the new college I'm trying to get into to Plattsburgh?
I don't have an Associate's so I don't know too too much about them but I do know that my BSW program had quite a bit of overlap with psych majors so my guess is most of it would transfer well into a social work program!
@@AnnaBea one more question when you did go into your bsw what type of classes that where required to take and is there a lot of math. Did you have a lot of exam/test in your bsw classes or where they all essays and writing assignments.

This has a lot of great information, but my sound is all the way up and you are still so quiet. I don't see any other comments talking about how quiet you are. The ads come up and double the sound, so I turn it down, then you start talking and I have to crank it up. As someone that already has difficulty hearing, this is hard to follow. @@chimdinmaegbe2164 you can get a job it's just different from what you can do with an MSW, and typically lower pay. A lot of clinical social workers are clinical therapists/counsellors, which is something you can't do with a BSW. There are some positions for BSW grads like youth counsellor, adoption counsellor etc, but this is different from being a clinical counsellor who is certified to work with people on their trauma, and sometimes to diagnose (in certain states only psychologists can diagnose certain things, though).
