  • It's my last day in the Czech Republic and I decided to end my first time ever in the country by exploring its second largest city called Brno, the former capital of Moravia.
I didn't know what to expect of this rather unpopular city compared to Prague, but I was quite definitely positively surprised!
    Find out why!

Yes, Brno is a nice, calm city and its only approx 120 km north of Vienna or 50 km from a gem town Mikulov.

Been living in Brno my whole life (38 years) and only recently I moved to Prague (for work) - so I guess I can make a little comparison between those two cities.
To me it feels like Prague has been more influenced by german & jewish culture than Brno. Brno is definitely influenced by Vienna/Austria a lot. No surprise here because these cities are quite close to each other and historically (during Austria-Hungary period) many austrian architects, artists and businessmen moved to Brno (Brünn/Bren) to work and live here.
Prague people are more reserved and introverted. It also feels like they are "professionally polite". Brno people are more emotional, direct, no BS kind of people.
Always loved my city (Brno) and also loved its laid-back lifestyle.
I have also met many many foreigners working there (many of them of UK/ANZAC origin) who loved living in Brno and decided to stay.
Brno is also more industrial and technological than Prague. Prague is more of a financial and touristic hub.

Fun fact - the share of Germans in the population of Prague in 1880 was 13.7% and in 1920 4.6% - while in 1930 the share of Germans in the population of the so-called Greater Brno (i.e. Brno and its surroundings) was 20% and the share of Germans in the so-called Inner Brno (the core of the city) was 29%.
And as for the famous Jewish names in Brno's history - one cannot miss the Gomperz family (who even rose to the status of nobility in the mid-19th century), mostly textile manufacturers who were responsible for the great economic rise of Brno in the 1920s and 1930s, such as Jakub Häller, Samson Franckel, Israel Popper, but also Moses Löw-Beer, Alfred Stiassny and Fritz Tugendhat - the last three of whom left their distinctive villas in Brno (and especially the last one is world famous)...

@@toruvalejo6152 You are completely correct, of course. I was not trying to deny german presence in Brno ofc (it was pretty much german city for centuries). However, you have to distinguish between Germans of saxon origin and Germans of austrian origin. They are very different people. Their mentality is different and looks as well, I would say, because Austrians got mixed up with Slavic people much more. Christopher Waltz explained it best on Conan O'Brien show. As for Jews, they lived everywhere in Europe ofc - mostly in cities. Very influential people and businessmen. Still, I would say they had greater impact on Prague where you can encounter a synagogue around every corner. I am not into eugenics or anything but I have pretty good perception and when I observe faces of native Prague people they often have jewish and germanic features. They do not resemble Slavs at all. Prague people are also slightly smaller in stature compared to people of Brno who are often quite tall (swedish heritage from 30 Years War?) - at least males. People of Brno resemble Slavs (both in appearance and temper) much more. At least, that's how I am feeling it based on my personal experience.

Dude, if you are from Brno then I'm from Mars. To me it definitely sounds like you don't know much about either city.
