    Another great video, Scott. I have to admit that I'm too addicted to A/C and to selecting my own gears in my DSG equipped GTI to come close to your MPG numbers but I do avoid "jackrabbit" acceleration when the light turns green and after decades of driving MT vehicles I still follow the practice my dad taught me to let engine compression slow my speed when I know I won't make it through a light ahead without stopping. In "auto" mode the DSG even assists that practice by automatically downshifting to second and then to first gear as I slow to a stop. Pays off not only in fuel economy but in replacing brake pads.
    In town I typically average 26-28 mpg and on the highway trips about 32 to 35 mpg. And those figures even include an occasional "German tuneup" of WOT acceleration when coast is clear. 😜

      Thanks for the note, Tom! It's a nice boost after having a busy-body blast one of my videos with several comments last night with accusations of me having a "mental disorder" for my attachment to "a piece of metal." I jested with them a bit, but they just wouldn't stop. Who's "mental" again? Yeah, the irony of someone taking the time to lecture a stranger about "mental problems" did not escape me. HAHA! Anyway, the vast majority of my interactions here are very pleasant; it's encouraging. I still have ideas for ongoing content. Take Care!

    I was getting 40-42mpg’s on my road trips with IS20 Stage 2 tuned. I’m getting 40-42mpgs with my IS38 custom tuned, on road trips as well. On uphill trips, through mountains, I average better with IS38 because it doesn’t get into boost as fast. It’s all about staying light in the throttle, using cruise control, and staying out of boost.

    Mk7.5 Golf R here. Been getting 30mpg (UK) average consistently on my work run (on at least 3 tanks, maybe less than 0.5mpg deviation somehow). Calculated in a similar way to you. Always fill the tank and record milage in an app. I do 14.5 miles each way with 6 miles on a straight road at 60. Low traffic in the AM, normal traffic going home
    Recently changed alloys and tires so waiting for the tank to empty before I have the numbers, but according to the remaining fuel in weconnect, I'm about 32mpg now. Went from 18" Cadiz with Bridgestone Potenza Sport to 18" Pretoria with Continental Premium Contact 6
    My DSG will often put itself in neutral if you tap the accelerator and "eco" shoes in the infotainment. Assumed this was optimal, will try leaving on gear next time

    I personally drive 70-80 and get about 26mpg with my custom tuned is38 that does 350hp on my hot tune. But i believe its because my commute is 15 miles only 10 miles on the freeway. When i go on longer freeway trips the same speed easily gets me 32mpg with the car somewhat loaded. So driving style and the commute itself makes a huge difference. I find your information extremely believable in these cars.

    I swear the tunnels are backed up in HR because some horse drawn buggy broke down 300 years ago and it’s been slow since. Joking. But this channel is exactly what I’m looking for. Just bought a 15 GTI to commute from Suffolk to Jacksonville, NC and want to mod for FE.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 2 lety

      Excellent! My daughter makes that drive from time to time. She's stationed near Jacksonville. If your GTI lacks the PP brakes, then you might see benefit from downsizing your wheels to 17" (many types fit over the PP brakes) or even 16s (will only fit over the smaller standard brakes). Other than that, if your reason for saving fuel is to reduce operating expenses, my other upgrade paths will never allow the extra fuel economy to pay-off the upgrades. ;-) Thanks for visiting!

    Great video! I would love to a video/some data on how accurate the GTI cluster’s mpg number is. I’ve done some of my own calculations on paper but I didn’t realize pumps can click off at different times (I always just fill till it clicks off and assume that’s basically the same amount of gas in the tank).

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 3 lety

      It's not a video that I can do with scientific accuracy. First, my cluster has been adapted to make it more accurate. Even with that, it's still just a guestimate. I probably still need to alter my reading by another 1%. It will still have times when it is more accurate than others. As for the pump, there's no way to be completely consistent about "topping off" without a see-thru fender and fill hose. That's the only way to know for sure without damaging the evap canister. Thanks for writing.

    I'm like minded - been tracking mileage in my vehicles since I learned to drive - Dad did it, so I did it too. Just no log book. My 'problem' is that my stock GTI will elicit a good deal of 'hot dogging' on a daily basis, so I make mental notes for why my tank MPG is sub 27. I'll then make a concerted effort to be 'good' and confirm that she will still get 32+.

    The greatest hit to mpg for me has been when I have the roof rack attached. 5-7 when empty and another 1-3 when there's a 58cm bike on top. Strangely enough a cargo box didn't seem to have any additional penalty compared to a bike.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 3 lety

      Yes, anything that changes the aerodynamics of the car will have an impact on fuel economy. I recently concocted a cargo box that rides on a hitch-mounted cargo tray. With it, the cargo rides in the car's draft. I haven't done any fuel economy testing with it, but I have no doubt that the impact is minimal. Thanks for visiting.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 3 lety +4

      Possibly! I like to keep my cars for at least 10 years. That would put me ready for a replacement toward the end of the Mk8 lifecycle. "Hmmm, Mk8 or Mk9?" By then, it really depends on the reliability of my Mk7 and what I think of its potential replacements. I don't like to buy new models. For example, I traveled over 500 miles to buy my wife's 2018 Jetta at a time when they were disappearing as the new Mk7 Jettas were rolling out. She didn't like the new design and I didn't want a new model in its debut year. I like to give them time to work out any bugs. So, I may skip over the Mk8 altogether or I may get one just before the Mk9 arrive. It all depends on how I feel about my GTI. Long answer. HAHA! Thanks for visiting.

    The people that only get mid 20 MPGs must do a lot of in town or stuck in traffic and hard accelerations! My stock '15 GTI manual with about 85000 miles on the odo has been getting about 31 MPG in mostly highway recently but I commit many fuel consuming sins. Idling, driving 70-75 MPH with the air conditioning on and what not. When I've done longer highway trips I've seen as high as 36 MPG regardless of still driving 70+ MPH with the a/c on!

      No plans for tracking. I got all of that out of my system with an older car many years ago. Besides the costs of entry, tires, and extra wear on components, I'd have to remove my electronics panel and other items at each event for safety reasons... then put it all back for daily driver duties. That's a lot of work for not much of a payback. I guess I'm lazy. ;-) Then there's the risk of an incident, either from my own mistake or someone else. No thanks! Thanks for visiting.

    Auto stop start is a pretty odd idea.. saving hardly any fuel at the cost of the lifespan of the vehicles starter. For those who are not mechanically inclined this could be a larger cost than the gasoline savings.
    Want to stress what he stated: engineering explained has a video on auto stop/start systems and their is a specific formula for any given engine that can tell you when auto stop start actually makes a positive impact.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, in EE's video, he basically said that idling for more than seven seconds burns more fuel than restarting the car. He also said that engineers very likely have specified more hearty starter motors for cars with auto-stop. Look up the P/N for the starter on the 2017 vs the 2019 and you should see a difference, perhaps a significant one. Thanks for visiting.

      Something to think about - for the common driver of a turbocharged sports car (something like a GTI) if they like to drive their vehicle very hard it is crucial for them to understand how turbochargers function.
      Turbos are cooled by engine oil. Turbos also get much hotter than the motor's internal components due to the speeds they spin at while not being fully submerged in oil.
      The start stop system can cause a lot of harm to an uninformed drivers vehicle if they drive their car hard often and let the motor shut off before the turbocharger has a chance to cool down.
      Thanks for the awesome content! Amazing gas mileage from your car! When I had a 2018 GTI autobahn I was able to average 30 to 40 mpg holding stead at 60 in southeastern Virginia and North Carolina (where I spent a lot of time driving).

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 Před 3 lety +2

      @@StealthGTI Thanks for citing the Engineering Explained video dealing with "start/stop" functionality, Scott. There are definitely fuel savings stemming from the technology but the more important payoff comes from reduced air pollution on gridlocked streets and freeways where cars stop, idle, start, stop, and idle again repeating the cycle over and over again. And the complaint that the feature wears out a starter is simply without evidence. Period.
      I leave my GTI's start/stop system in operation at all times. Unlike some systems that eliminate any airflow in the cabin when the car is turned off, that's not the case in the VW. And I never have to wait more than a split second for the engine to restart. Faster than I can move my foot from the brake to the gas pedal.
      Finally, I frequent a neighborhood coffee shop daily where the drive-up window is encased in a tunnel. When I drove up to the window a couple of years back the engine stopped and the attractive young lady who served my coffee thanked me for turning off my engine, saying she really hates the exhaust fumes she consumes every day. Attractive young women smiling and expressing gratitude to me is rare enough at my age to make the start/stop system on my GTI a worthwhile feature. 😎
