Ecrins volbiv day 4 - Col d'Izoard to St André-les-Alpes on my Omega X-Alps 2

  • Wednesday 4th July 2018. We awoke to a beautiful morning at the Col d'Izoard, and after breakfast we went in search of water. The nearest option was the Refuge de Napoleon, a few hundred metres down the road to the north, where in addition to water, we topped up on calories too :-). Well, it would have been rude not to!
    Our plan for the day was to fly back to St André-les-Alpes as Nigel (who lives there) had to be home by the evening. After a sketchy take off on a steep slope, during which I failed to notice that the footplate of my pod was inside-out, I eventually climbed out and my six hour adventure began...

    I saw the video for the third time today evening. Awesome, I love it so much ... beautiful recordings of excellent quality, very nice pictures from locations in Hautes Provence where I was for hanggliding in the 90ths and I can be part of your experiences and adventures. Very very very great stuff. Thanks, Jörg.

    Great video as usual Tim. I see you got the usual St Andre welcome with a small kicking just to remind you where you are.

    Hi Tim! Love your videos! And i love the mountains and the alps just as you seem to do. I’m also a paragliding pilot and your videos are so inspiring to me as i want to become a better pilot and learn thermal flying. Thanks, fly safe and keep making videos :)

    Very nice Tim! Have you considered mounting a gimbal to the carabiner to get steadier shots? I'm sure it would really do that awesome scenery a lot of good. Enjoy your trip there!

    • @TimPentreath
      @TimPentreath  Před 6 lety

      Skippie The trip has been and gone sadly! I have thought about a gimbal but it would mean extra weight and complexity and more battery / charging requirements, which are things you don’t want on a volbiv. Also, in a funny way, having footage that moves around makes it more real, and certainly easier to film birds that you’re flying with for example, or sailplanes. So all in all it’s not for me, but I think it has its place in shorter more “arty” films.

    It looks like you landed in the main LZ in St Andre, Tim. Years ago when I last flew hang gliders there, we were advised not to land there until much later in the day, when thermic activity had died down. Is that still the case? It was comical, if no-one got hurt, to watch how many people would pile in there if they tried to land before about 5pm, with the wind direction changing from every which way. A good friend, at the time one of the top five competition pilots in the world, ended up on a power line next to the adjacent road.

      @TimPentreath  Před 5 lety

      Bill Brand Yes, during comps quite often they’ll advise to land in the LZ just up the valley to the NE as the wind can switch between southerly and westerly.

    What camera do you use Tim? Do you leave it running a while and edit down, or just turn it on when you want to say something?

    • @TimPentreath
      @TimPentreath  Před 6 lety +1

      It's a GitUp Git 2 with external mic. Cheap and cheerful... And yes, I only turn it on when something interesting is happening.
