  • 10th April 1965: With none of the top four First Division clubs playing today "Match of the Day" send their cameras to the County Ground, Northampton for the visit of Derby County. Town just need one win to end a fairytale season and guarantee themselves promotion to the top flight.

Three of the Derby team here - Colin Boulton, Ron Webster and Alan Durban - were part of the team which won the First Division seven years later.

I was only messing mate. I know they were in the first division in 1965/66.
It was a good game after a slow start. The conditions were bad because of the wind and there was tension because they didn't want to lose ground to the team chasing them; only two up two down in those days.

This time seven years later, Derby were league champions and Northampton were back in the 4th division.

Notice how the players weren't diving everywhere or wasting time

Players were sportsmen in those days . Nowadays they are not . Football today is just a mere shadow of what it once was . Of course some things have improved but the most important points and values have all been lost . The beautiful game is not beautiful anymore .

@@achelharissi8147 Yes - but by 1969 they were, sadly, all the way back down to Division 4 once again.
