- 30th January 1965: No "Match of the Day" broadcast due to the coverage of Winston Churchill's funeral.
6th February 1965: With no League program the previous week "Match of the Day" returns with the stand out game of the weekend - Manchester United's visit to White Hart Lane against Tottenham Hotspur. Following a dip in form United have dropped to 3rd in the First Division while Spurs are one place below in 4th still well a drift of the League leaders Leeds and Chelsea. With the game taking place on the anniversary of the Munich air crash just seven years before both sides are wearing black arm bands.
Commentated by Wally Barnes.
I was there, I watched this game with my Ol' Dad. The crowd was too big and I was put on everyones shoulders and heads to get on to the pitch to avoid being crushed. I watched it crouched on the sidelines.
Lovely to watch this even though my team lost, Spurs were the better team on the day as Mr Barnes Great game by Norbert Stiles best I have seen him play, RIP Nobby a proper Manchester lad who went to St Pats our local Catholic School, all my mothers family attended.
Spurs vs Man united games during the sixtys was always a big game.
Great to see so many excellent players on the pitch. However, Spurs pitches were quite dreadful in terms of playing conditions, particularly when it came to late autumn. Indeed, even by April, the White Hart Lane pitch still looked like a muddy and rain sodden field. Things wouldn’t dramatically improve until the late 70’s.
Crowd size looks enormous....Wally Barnes the commentator actually stays silent sometimes, unlike today's prattlers.
The idiots commentating today love their own voices too much to shut up
What a fantastic performance by a great spurs side with some amazng goals
I know I'm pretty off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Nathan Anthony flixportal :P
@Eli Gianni Thank you, I went there and it seems to work =) Appreciate it!
@Nathan Anthony No problem :D
Wow that took me back!! It was Henry's one and only goal for Spurs. MOTD has changed out of all recognition. No action replays, no off side lines, no interviews with the managers, no studio setting.
22:50 listen to someone in the crowd shouting "beat Stanley Matthews any time".
I don't know who he means
Great performance from Nobby stiles, greaves hardly gets a kick. Sad to hear he’s in poor health now.
tavy@ george best was below average pre 1966. i had no idea! but came good!!!!
He was still really young then - his talent was obvious but he hadn't matured physically or as a player. A bit like Ronaldo between about 2003 and 2005
old w h l park lane boy coys crowd right on pitch great days looks like the old ww1 battle field pitch
tip toeing around imagine them playing today on the snooker table smooth pitches
why black arm band i wonder ?? commentator hardly says anything not like to day they tell you what the striker has for breakfast dennis law was a great player but look at the players we had wow coys
The commentator does say that it was the 7th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.
What were the large letters of the alphabet for along side the field?
Showed half time scores from other games.
The match programme listed the other matches being played. Each match had a letter attached to it. You would need the programme to find out the halftime scores.
No health and safety back then ha
