The fact that the family had a child that could not speak yet nobody had made any effort to learn or teach him sign language should have been a big red flag from the very beginning.
As a former interpreter for the Deaf and hard of hearing, I was thinking the same thing. There are some traumatic brain injuries, cognitive impairments or communication disorders that make it hard to communicate with any form of language. Maybe they came up with that sort of explanation. Although I completely agree with you. If a parent was like "yeah they can't talk and we're done trying to find any way to communicate", that would make me raise an eyebrow. Cause in almost all cases there is a way for some sort of communique. But I guess that was the point of the movie. Keep an eye out for red flags and only give so much benefit of the doubt!

I think the 'protagonist' parents missing red flag after red flag is a big intentional part of the film. The goal of the movie is to make you hate those people for failing to protect their children. More than you hate the people that actually commit the crimes.
The only reason you don’t try to teach your child how to communicate is because you don’t want them to communicate what they witness. We see this in abuse/abduction cases where the victims are very little and sadly makes the crimes go unreported for a very long time, often until they are teens or adults
This entire movie is about ignoring red flags and being as fucking stupid and gullible as possible, it's infuriating.
Speak No Evil and Funny Games are basically both films with the warning of "If you feel something is wrong, focus on that more than being polite"
Both boil down to domesticated men failing to be protectors. When it comes to protecting your family, fuck being polite, be a rabid dog and save asking questions for later.
Also The Strangers. Speak No Evil's ending is basically The Strangers' ending with the "I did it because I could" motivation.
I think the warning is more like a story about expressing your true feelings instead of trying to present an image of a, polite, good, honest, or (insert positive adjective) person.
What does it matter that somebody would interpret your actions and give you a devaluing name? If you aren't fucking with somebody, don't fuck with em.
@levischorpioen Agreed! That's the mist disturbing concept of that film. Good call. The whole idea that all of these atrocities occurred all because, well, "You were home." The idea of that sends chills down my back due to the fact that's how shit goes left in real life.

The actor playing George was Ulrich Mühe - a brilliant and well respected actor here in Germany. Sadly, cancer took him in 2007.
Also, the woman playing his wife in the movie was Susanne Lothar - his actual wife. Sadly, while it isn't official, it is assumed she took her own life in 2012, unable to overcome her grief after losing him. She died one day before the fifth anniversary of Ulrich's death, so... yeah.
Also the actor of Peter died in 2010 at the age of 38. 3 of the 4 adult main actors died within the next 15 years

Funny games is not about holding the movie viewer captive against their will, but rather a commentary on how we as people enjoy watching movies with violence against innocents and seeking out media that contains this. The intruders are very clearly doing this for YOU, to entertain you, which is why they break the fourth wall. They are giving you what YOU wanted, a horror movie about torturing a family. It's so realistic and upsetting because that's the point, making you guilty. It's such a smart movie, and that's how I interpreted it

Im always flip flopping on whether it’s a terrible movie or a great movie, as someone who hasn’t seen it and avoids watching it for the very reason it exists (hurting innocents for the audience). I’d love to see a behind the scenes look instead of actually watching the movie lol

It's kind of a faulty premise though. We don't enjoy hurting the innocents. We enjoy hurting the guilty. It's just that for the guilty to exist, there need to have been innocents to be hurt. Horror movies purposefully flip that around, which is why they're called horror movies. You're not supposed to identify with the villain in those movies.
The first movie is so uniquely horrifying. It really shows an accurate picture of how people can feel like a frog boiling in a pot of water. Slowly you get each thing to ramp up a little bit more, and somehow no one sees it coming. Just to everyone who has kids, if your kid says they do not feel safe, always believed them. They'll always be the first to notice the Little things
True, although that experiment with the frog was misreported. They cut its leg muscles so it couldn’t jump out.
From someone who was a victim as a child. I second this. People ignored me when trying to speak out and I'm the one who suffered from their bad decisions. So don't be like that please. Not only believe your kids but also please ask them why they feel weird or get "bad vibes" because kids tend to be brutally honest for the most part. There will be a reason.
@@urusaiinu It wasn't the frogs leg muscles they removed, it was their brain. This is especially relevant because they were looking for proof of souls existing. The hypothesis was that the soul resided in the brain, and they thought their results proved that. Obviously now we know the poor frogs were just lobotomised - or dead to begin with
The average person the moment a stranger (or even a person you know) does something to your kids it's the moment you leave and never talk to them again.
But of course we so often hear horrifying tales on the news about people that would take horrific abuse and never try to escape/change their fate.

The thing about "Funny Games" and the phone situation is: It is a German family on holidays in Austria. So they don't necessarily know the number to dial for police ;)
But yes, the whole movie is a subversion of usual horror movies. Which is why it also features common horror movie tropes, only to mock them. It tries to bring responsibility back to the viewer, not spoon-feed him regurgitated movie tropes.
There are a couple of emergency numbers that will work in basically every country. Like 110 and 112 which are the standard emergency numbers in Germany but will also work almost everywhere even in countries where they aren't the standard

As an adult who grew up with a severe people-pleasing personality and is finally going to therapy to learn how to make and keep boundries, Speak No Evil made me so terrified and sick to my stomach! Like, "that looks like something my younger self would have done" kind of sick.
Frustration horror. Such an interesting sub-genre to explore. That's a great triple feature you picked if your goal is to lose faith in humanity lol.

Speak no evil is a great commentary on why you should always speak your mind, not hide behind subtext, and stand up for your values.
Yeah sometimes I feel like a bitch because I'm very blunt and direct. I've had people go off on me because of it, but I wasn't wrong and Ultimately everything worked out better for me.
I took a self defense class once and they said if someone is trying to move you even a foot, always fight back because the odds are high that they will make you disappear. I apply this to people trying to take advantage of me socially too.

Now I’m 31 and the last few years I have been working to find that balance between standing up for myself and not feel guilty. I’m not a b*tch just because I hold my ground.

Nightingale, is beautiful in the way it shows how the oppressed are bound together. Turned against one another. They both speak their own languages, but also English. Both understand that they are both victims to the same oppression.
"Because you let me" is a VERY The Strangers kind of line. Genius.
Except it really carries a lot more meaning. The horror of The Strangers is different, in that there was literally no reason.

It also carries more meaning, because in the strangers, they said, it happened "because you were home" meaning there was less of a way to avoid what happened (although it could still have been done, if they'd been better armed, or more familiar with firearms, so as not to accidentally shoot their friend who shows up) On the other hand the line "because you let me" from the other movie, implies that if they'd done anything at all basically, to not conform to polite ideals, rather than just letting the other couple do whatever they want, then the whole thing could have been prevented.
This is why a lot of people victim-blame, because the victim "let them".

The first movie is the ultimate horror flick for people pleasers like me. Giving someone that pool chair even though I’m kind of using it is TOTALLY something I would do. 😂 If it’s not a major inconvenience to me, I just like making people happy and not being confrontational over the small things. This movie is so accurate portraying people pleasers and really taught me to be kind but stop being kind TO A FAULT. It’s actually a great message.

It's possible to see it as a Biblical allusion. From Leviticus 20:2:
"Say to the Israelites: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The members of the community are to stone him."
There is no cult of Molek in this film, but Bjørn and Louise failed to protect their daughter from the evil Dutch couple. Consequently, they'll have to pay for their sins in a Biblical way.

And now, everyone go watch, "I Spit on Your Grave". The 2010 version. It's probably the best revenge movie I've ever seen. There are a couple scenes where I literally, kinda, felt sorry for the bad guys in it, because of what she does to them. AND I HATED, these bad guys. I think you'll all really like it. 🙂
The PTSD scene in Nightingale is so realistic. I suffered from SA, and the way you described feeling like you can't escape the thoughts you want to avoid sometimes, and then you react in an extreme way phyiscally is exactly how it is for me. Like my body is physically shaking off the pain sometimes, and then I feel better and cleansed almost afterward.
11/10 exactly . As an SA survivor as well, that scene REALLY got me more than a lot of the other more gore inducing ones. I sobbed when she was able to sing without breaking eye contact. People don’t realize how much courage that takes

I remember seeing the original “Funny Games”, and being a horror/scary movie buff, it scared the hell out of me. Same with “Speak No Evil”. Any movie that brings the element of dread, along with the thought of “this could actually happen”, scares me more than any fantasy/monster horror ever could.
Something omitted in your analysis of Speak No Evil is that the Danish family that is targeted as the victims are culturally more likely to act in the way, in Denmark meekness and humility are seen as virtues. If they tried that on an American family, they’d learn a whole lot about “fuck around and find out”.
I definitely agree with this, Danish people are so non confrontational to the point where even if they hate you they won’t stop interacting with you to save face and seem “nice”
Funnily enough an american family is still more likely to experience shit like this because of your crime rates, which are partly caused by the "fuck around and find out" mentality you are so proud of💀💀 But go off🇺🇸🦅
I agree, and I think choosing a Dutch couple was a good choice too, because in Dutch culture being a bit confrontational is widely accepted, in humor and also in everyday life.

can confirm as a danish person who grew with a lot of american influences, my desired responses are very different from my actual responses, I would probably not say or do anything until the red flags become too blatant to ignore
depending on the family how many millions are in America, say a Idaho couple meeting maybe a irish couple, since every American claims to be 1/10th irish ir whatever, nothing against either people, but imagine been invited to a remote place in Ireland, u cant bring ur guns, and miles from anywhere.. these things can happen especially a people with a pig farm.. and a easy to get rid of teeth and any undigestables. dont be so cocky because ur American 😂
"Eden Lake" is another movie that I think fits well into this category. Never have I watched a film that has frustrated me as much as this one has, especially with the ending. So much awful shit happens to the characters that is undeserved, and even when you think they'll be redeemed and get revenge, things only get way worse. It's a good film, but holy hell is it a tough watch.
That's ending is brutal, haven't been able to rewatch the movie because of it, even if it's not that explicit the complete anxiety you feel from that last scene alone has made me avoid it.
Yeah that ending stuck with me for days.

"People living their best lives take them for granted" This is far too true to even be remotely funny. I feel like everyone should suffer a bit so they can experience what reality is really like instead of their spoiled little bubbles where everything is perfect and people shove "love" and money up their asses
Speak No Evil is a perfect metaphorical depiction of how harmful it is to be a people pleaser who doesn’t stand up for their boundaries. Like Patrick said, they let him do it. People will get away with and take advantage of you as much as you let them. It’s insane the amount of crap they put up with in attempts to be polite.
And both that movie and Funny Games to me illustrate that it’s way safer not to trust people until they give you ample and sustained proof that you can. Immediately going to a secluded cabin with people you just met is not a good idea. And if some random dude showed up at my door asking for eggs, I wouldn’t answer the door and I’d call the police.

I don’t entirely buy this idea that the Danish couple in “Speak no Evil” let evil,depraved things happen to them.l see them as ordinary people who failed to see various red flags and wound up trapped in a situation they didn’t foresee.Strangers may try to take advantage of people’s generosity,but they usually don’t do so to the psychotic,homicidal degree that the Dutch couple does to the Danish couple.

I only trust people after I've died and been buried so I don't put myself in this kind of danger.
And to expand on that, the real horror is the idea that so many people out there are just like that as well. As it showed pictures of many other families that met the same fate.
Funny Games is an awesome satire on movie violence but yeah it can be decently hard to watch specially with how good the performances are

The way I see it is that Paul and Pete are us the viewer. We are just there to see them suffer and toy with them. We don’t want them to win or survive. We are doing this to them for no real reason other than our own entertainment. That’s why they have white gloves on at the start. It’s like our own denial that we have anything to do with the violence, when it’s actually us paying to see it that’s causing it.
Love the last line. Brilliant.
Another thing that makes Speak No Evil so harrowing, especially for us Danes, is that the cordiality, kindness and people-pleasing are all so central to Danish culture and society, that the movie hits us harder, and basically punishes us for our culture.

Michael Haneke, the director of "Funny Games" is a true master of cinema. The reason behind him remaking the movie in english wasn't just to get more people to see it. Apparently his original idea was to shoot the movie in the US, but he wasn't able to make it work with the budget he got. The malicious satire the movie presents, works, in my opinion, even better in the american setting. You should try watching his other stuff if you enjoyed "Funny Games", as most of his work evokes very similar feelings of deep existential dread. I love him to death and I'm very happy you also enjoyed his work!!

His film The White Ribbon is a masterpiece. Honestly had no idea the two films were both directed by him until now
@@madeofmeats i think he satirizes any movie that glorifies violence. in this case the two antagonists are not only playing with the family and the audience, they actually are representing the audience that has little to no reaction to the violence they see. just some quick entertainment.
in pretty much every mainstream action movie the audience can see the intial act of violence (in this movie it does not), but almost never the aftermath or other consequences (this movie only shows the aftermath)

Could you look into Max Keeble's Big Move, Blank Check, and How to Eat Fried Worms? I don't know if these are your style, but you've already done Ace Ventura Jr. And Son of the Mask, so maybe they are. Those two movies were big parts of my childhood because my dad was a big Jim Carrey fan and the former three I mentioned fit right in with those memories. I think they're better than the other two though, but that might just be the rose-tinted glasses.
13 years ago I watched Teeth with my girlfriend for a bedroom movie date, not knowing anything about the premise. If you do know the premise, you could understand it was quite an uncomfortable experience. We're now happily married. I continue to love awkward body horror, she continues to tolerate my love for it. I have two people in my life who are somewhat extreme people-pleasers and I see how it genuinely hurts their lives. They spend so much energy pleasing other people, even strangers, and I constantly watch them sacrifice their own comfort, desires, and belongings because of it. Neither of them can stand horror cinema, especially this kind, but I truly wish I could recommend that they watch Speak No Evil.
There’s a lot of criticism about the film for the mind boggling idiotic decisions the characters make, but many aren’t considering the cultural influences of the characters, whose home country is known to promote the kinds of “manners” that our main characters display. Audiences are also not realizing these type of people pleasers actually exist. Most don’t end up in a situation like this, obviously, but it’s a WARNING. A warning to those who constantly go against their gut to satisfy people who take advantage of them and disrespect their boundaries. If films are to be judged on their effectiveness in bringing out a specific emotion in those watching, Speak No Evil is a masterclass. It’s one instance where “dumb decisions” is actually used to SAY something that you can take with you in your real life. And god damn does it do that well.
Agree. Had it been an American film I would've considered the characters' behavior to be unusual, but hailing from Scandinavia, it's almost creepy how easy it is to spot these flaws in people surrounding me. I thought it made the film darkly hilarious, like the director saying;
"See? This is how bad Danes would fuck up if they were in a horror movie scenario!"

As soon as I saw it was on this list I got instant trauma 😭 that movie is brutal, and having watched it after being a SA survivor was traumatic and cathartic for me. Even this recap made me cry and love the movie all over again. As amazing as it is, I know I’ll never watch it again.
I felt the same about Hawkins in the Nightengale, he is so detestable it's wild. I've never felt so strongly about a movie character.
Joffrey from Game Of Thrones and Negan from The Walking Dead were/are pretty easy to hate as well. The latter character made me quit watching a show I loved all together.

Joffrey was a massively spoiled and narcissistic child that lived in a world that rewarded brutality and ruthlessness, but I think he could've been at least maybe okay'ish if he grew up different.
Negan uses violence, fear and cruelty as a tool, he is an opportunist. While clearly ripping through boundaries, he at least has some redeeming qualities and can be reasoned with.
Hawkins is just straight up evil, cannot be redeemed, and is an example of the worst thing a human can become.

Negan was a great character and personally I think the episodes 6x16 and 7x1 are masterful, the endless tension and hopelessness, the emotions, the acting, everything honestly. 7x1 probably one of the darkest episodes ever filmed.
But it definitely fell apart afterwards, yup. Writing got worse every season after, though it had some good episodes here and there. Last season honestly some of the worst I ever saw

As an Australian watching Billy be respectfully shown as a strong and compassionate and intelligent Indigenous Australian man during a particularly awful time made me tear up.
Honestly, they're beautiful. What I'm fascinated about regarding Australian aboriginals, is that so many also have naturally blonde hair. The way we evolved is just amazing. I love Australia, and some day in my life I'd like to go there. With lots of armor, health potions, drinks, and antidotes.

The Truman Show is one of the most cruel movies ever made. I recently watched that and found myself thinking, the fact that this movie exists is probably a big reason that's never happened in real life, yet. I have to imagine at least a few eccentric billionaires have dabbled with the idea of making someone's entire life a reality show that everyone is in on except them, and other people told them "nah man, that would be like The Truman Show. That's awful. You can't do that."
The premise of it is horrifying but so is the unspoken implication that this movie takes place in a universe where thousands if not millions of people will watch a man unknowingly be recorded and live his life on a stage and see nothing wrong with it, or at least, no government body is intervening to label it unethical.
The closest we’ve gotten to this IRL is one installment of this extreme prank show in Japan called “Susunu! Denpan Shonen’ where comedians were put into terrible arduous situations for viewers’ sadistic entertainment. I’m copy+pasting directly from an article:

America pioneered the genre but I don’t think to my knowledge any program has ever gone to those lengths to trick and torment people in that way. There is always an “out” or the decision to give up.

Another cruel movie like Funny Games is Wolf Creek. It actually has likable and funny characters and toys with the feeing that they can fight back and there’s hope, but unfortunately for this movie the almost death moments and ridiculous moments of luck happen to the VILLAIN.
Which makes me think... family vlogs that center on children (8 Passengers and its fallout come to mind) aren't very far from the Truman Show. The main difference is the child is aware, but said child has no choice or agency on whether to participate, either. Sure, it isn't a whole fabricated setting but... it's uncomfortably close.
I watched The Nightingale tonight, pausing your video when you mentioned all three films. It was horrific. Like those I Spit on Your Grave films but set way back in time. The ending leaves you feeling relieved but disappointed at the same time, not at the film but just at everything. I mean what else is Clare supposed to do now? It's a movie that definitely sticks with you long after you've watched it. I love IFC films but this was one of their best.

You explained her trauma, and just trauma in general, pretty well. I suffer from trauma and it's forever present in my mind unless I'm completely consumed by something else. It's like no matter how much you confront it and think about why you're having these anxieties all the time, it just constantly keeps coming forward. Even if it's been a long time and you forget certain things about the trauma, you're already scarred. I suffer from PTSD every day and anxiety every day.
I also have PTSD, panic disorder, and GAD. THC and a good therapist have saved my life. I became an addict as a result of my trauma, support groups and the right medication has saved my life. I wish you healing and all the best life has to offer.
It's a circumstance that only those who've been there can understand. Trying to explain to the uneducated or unaffected is futile.

Long story short, if something feels off, TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS! I've owed dozens of copies of this book, and I've given every single one away to people (mostly women) who have been socialized to "be nice." I raised my daughter to know that you can't trust people by what they say, or by how they look. Only trust people by what they DO. Actions speak louder than words, and looks can be deceiving.
Except a lot of the most dangerous people are nice and polite and charming, talks well and very sociable and good looking (we are hard wired to like beautiful things) or if not good looking they looks harmless (either very young or very old) and that lowers our guard. There is a crime here in my country where a child a family adopted killed the family's real children and then stole money (she hid the money) and made the entire thing look like it was done by robbers, but she didn't know there was a cctv in front of the house and the recording did not show any intruders.
Oooof, I hope that rabbit was worth it. My daughter LOVES her stuffed animals, but if she was getting scared, she would leave any of them without a second thought.
That rewind button in funny games was such a cruel slap in the face, but also so wonderfully unexpected.
The prime case of plot armor
Ulrich Mühe was a spectacularly talented actor. He was also in The Lives of Others, which is likely the movie he’s known for to international audiences who don’t know Funny Games. He died of stomach cancer shortly after it was released, with I believe his last public appearance being at the Oscars where the film won the award for best foreign language film. Such a tragedy.
God, The Lives of Others was also fantastic. I saw it first when I was 14 -- Learning Ulrich Mühe died so young was gut-wrenching. He was a brilliant actor whose performances really shaped my teenage hood.

I was honestly relieved when the main protagonists were ended in Speak No Evil. It felt more like an act of mercy with how many stupid decisions were made be these two lacking any sense of self-preservation.
I can not even imagine going on a trip with a whole ass other family that I only met once 😭 I don’t care how cool they seemed I’d be like No thank you ☺️🤚 maybe next time! And never contact them again. And that’s even before all the red flags!

honestly I hate movies like this. they're incredibly infuriating and I stop rooting for the protagonists, who seem to be written to be intentionally stupid so the plot can continue. You finally leave because you felt unsafe and you found your daughter in the bed with a naked stranger, but your daughter forgot her plushie? No one in their right minds would go back. and even if you did, you wouldn't make amends. You take the bunny and RUN.
Honestly, I saw their final fate as a willing self-termination. We spend the whole movie waiting for Bjørn to finally stand up for his family and fight back, but no. Weak people won't rise to the occasion but collapse under their own incompetence. Bjørn means "bear" in Danish, so I assume he was intended as a deconstruction of the "papa bear" character.

The real antagonist in Funny Games is the audience. Haneke hates the use of violence in movies as an entertainment. In fact, because of that he can't stands Tarantino's movies, he said in an interview.

The man that played Ruse in the nightingale was one of the actors in Mr Inbetween, a hugely underrated crime series set in Australia. If you are Australian or Kiwi you know how grounded and realistic the show is despite it's somewhat outlandish plotlines, hilarious, disturbing, brutal and deepingly saddening.
Requiem For A Dream fits the bill
Yes! Takes what you think is a love story and tale of growing older & turns into a sad, emotional, tormenting dance for all the characters.
I agree that it's hard to watch, but I'm also inclined to say I'd recommend at least watching it once as it does have some worthwhile elements. I saw it while in college and got concerned about how much coffee I'd been having (a lot by my standards at least), and since then have been trying to regulate that more.

When reading the title, movies like 'Midsommar' and 'Hereditary' came to mind. I'm an avid horror fan, but these movies left a deep pit in my stomach in the best way possible. Also a movie I can only watch every now and then with years apart, is 'Requiem for a Dream'. That movie is SO messed up, and leaves you feeling nothing but despair..
I'm excited to see that I haven't seen any of these movies! I may even pause it and come back once I've seen them myself, if this contains spoilers. Never knew that 2008 'Funny Games' was a remake!

Reminds me of the film Creep where the guy is constantly testing the filmmakers boundaries. ALWAYS maintain boundaries when you don't know someone. I dont mean aloof. I mean even the opposite can work if your naturally gregarious. Don't let ppl make you uncomfortable or hold your phone or if they wanna join soccer game dont let em walk to far with your ball before running them down. Don't let people pressure you into doing things your against. Even if it seems trivial. Or if you've established rappart you may allow it only ONCE if it's extremely trivial, and you make it reciprocal that sane day by doing something similar.dont be afraid to say a seats taken, unless it's really unfair (like if there's 2 benches at a community thing and you claimed both). The beach chair, if it was the ONLY other chair, ok let the other family have a chair, but be clear you are doing do out of fairness. Everything after that is cause to immediately leave. Yes even the meat (and NO I'm not vegetarian).
I love this movie and enjoyed Creep 2. It was weird to see Mark Duplass on a rewatch of The League after seeing those films 😂.
I don’t even understand how that could happen. To commit to being vegetarian, despite the sheer amount of pressure in society not to be, and then immediately cave to some guy. I decided to go vegetarian as a child and my grandfather tried to beat me into eating a whole chicken. I ran off and locked myself in the bathroom until my parents turned up to collect me. If that didn’t make me waiver, then some peer pressure isn’t going to. My experience might’ve been an extreme response to going vegetarian that most people haven’t experienced, but still. It’s the sort of thing you commit to. The opportunities, temptation, normalisation, and pressure not to be is fricking everywhere. You just can’t continue being vegetarian if you don’t have strong will.
While watching the first and last movie of this list, I keep hearing Billie butcher in my head like -

Speak No Evil actually made me feel physically ill when I saw it. Like I was on the edge of vomiting. The other two movies I’m glad I haven’t seen and instead had it recapped for me. Makes it a lot easier to process lol
Nightingale, while absolutely harrowing and horrific, is such a beautiful film. The way it's filmed and the way in which the main characters bond and form connection despite the intense trauma inflicted on them is the light amongst the shadow in that film, in my opinion.
I’m ngl when the boy showed his tongue cut out part came up my jaw actually dropped. I’ve seen real death and horrible things but that legitimately caught me off guard
Martyrs is a good example of this. Its the only movie i've ever watched, that actually made me feel like i've had some of my life essence sucked from me.

Come and See was based on the book I Am From The Fiery Village, a book I want to read and do not want to read equally.
My dorm roommate got me to watch Funny Games without knowing anything about it and it fucked me up. I cried my eyes out after that movie. Not to say it wasn't incredibly well done. The reason it affected me so much was because it was simultaneously very realistic, amazing performances, and just fantastical enough to be utterly frustrating as I watched the characters suffer.
Yeah, that incredibally realistic part where they rewound time with a TV remote control. Come on, man.

The first one is actually a Dutch cultural tradition, it's called "Deentje klieren" (messing with Danish people).
Nightingale, although incredibly unsettling, at least has some semblance of a good ending. The main protagonists get some revenge and are able to persist despite their trauma. The other movies here just make me feel hopelessly terrible lol.

I remember that we met a couple with a non-communicative child (I think she was on the autism spectrum, IIRC). We had dinners, hung out, they took us places they knew. About a year later, they even visited us.
So hearing about Speak No Evil was pretty horrifying for me, as I was also a relatively small kid at the time.
And I got pretty emotional hearing you describe The Nightingale, especially the latter part.

Love this commentary, all great movies! I gotta say though, the rabbit hit home for me. My daughter had a stuffed rabbit, it was gifted to me at my baby shower. It used to say the Lord's Prayer when you squeezed its paw, but eventually the motor in it died, (got super creepy at the end with the slow-mo voice, lol😅), but she still loved that thing, it was her favorite stuffed toy, and Rabbit went everywhere with her. One night after we'd been out shopping, I realized Rabbit was gone. We'd been to three different stores and let me tell you right now I drove to each one at 11pm to find Rabbit. The last store, a Walgreens, I found him on the floor of the bath aisle. Took me a bit to convince the clerk this was ours and I wasn't stealing. My daughter is almost 20 now, 1st year of college under her belt, and she still has Rabbit. 😁❤
