His character makes sense if you think about it.
When Carlisle turned him he was then frozen into the body and brain of a 17 year old. Right after he had to cope with the death of his mother, the maddening concept of eternity, and having to relive *high school* every year. And he does all of this with the brain of a teenager, watching each of his colony mates find love.
I think that in the right hands, Edward could be written to be a very compelling character rather than a chunk of marble with abs.

@@vmma. personally I think he's just a permanent fish out of water. On one hand, because he knows what everybody else thinks at every moment, he doesn't have to work on his people's skills (that's why he doesn't know how to act with Bella, for once on his life he has to use his brain, and that hurts). On the other, imagine what it would do to someone's sanity to be forever 17 (almost an adult but forever treated like a child) while having to listen to everybody's weird thoughts on a daily basis. It's like being on Twitter 24/7 but worse. No wonder he doesn't know what's normal anymore.
Like at that point, he's probably not dealt with the consequences of doing anything wrong in years, so he wouldn't even consider that breaking in someone's house is weird because it's not like he's going to get caught anyway.

Edward really fought hard to stay away from bella. Good or evil, moral or immoral, his thoughts were constantly fighting all throughout the book.. that was hilarious. My favorite is when bella admitted that she doesnt like not seeing him in school.. then he says to himself "are you happy now?!!" because he doesnt want her to fall in love with him.
