I have had this in my cart for about 3 months now, and thank you for making this video, really confirms my choice about the extra space. Planning on using for winter backpacking and beefier thru hikes with more people than just myself. Could pitch my zpacks duplex in this!!!
If you look at river country products they have a trekking pole set with middle extender piece you could consider to link them together. Not sure why hmg doesn't offer something like this
Great video. i love my HMG ULM4 with the full insert with the guys. im thinking of the half for the pup and i only. Your video is selling me on it a lot with all that room it gives you and a place to chill if it rains.
It’s been so nice to be able to get into the tent and change out of wet clothing before getting into the inner nest. I actually just got the full insert to use this summer because I want to keep my camera equipment inside the nest itself.
Hi there. I have ordered the same tent a few weeks ago and am waiting for it to arrive. I'm curious, can the half insert be positioned at the back of the tent, rather than left or right sides?
Nice job. 2 years and 12.1k views later… how’s the tent? Are you still using it? Still happy with it? I’m considering the Ultamid 4 for winter camping… live in Calgary and spend time in the mountains.
The tent has been amazing and yeah I've still got it. I've been very happy with it. I had a weird zipper issue it was able to resolve it without needing any warranty service. I would highly recommend it for 4 season winter camping. You won't be sorry.
I'll get there. I haven't been camping much and now I live in the Arizona Desert. This tent might wind up being too big to pitch in most of the places I go.
Just set up my Ultamid 2 with the half insert and was just as confused what to do with the bungees for the insert at the top… I’ve seen older videos where there’s a cup attached to it and you remove the center pole briefly and put it on top and then reinsert the center pole and that seems like a much better design than trying to loop the bungee through those tiny loops at the top… Going to reach out to HMG and see if I’m missing something 😕
Tyson (Hyperlite Mountain Gear) Sep 1, 2021, 3:50 PM EDT Hey Nicholas, Thanks for reaching out! We initially included the Pole Cup with the first few runs of the Half Insert to allow it to adapt to older Ultamids that do not have the reciprocating loops in the inside of its center support cone for the Insert to attach to. Now that those have all been taken care of, we have stopped including the Pole Cup as the Insert does not need to to attach. To get it set up without the Pole Cup, simply detach the shockcord from the top of the Insert using the glove hooks attached to the D-rings. Once detached, the shockcord can then run through the two small loops on the interior cone of the Ultamid and clip back to the top of the Insert. Once connected, you can use the line locs at the top of the Insert to adjust its height. You can also take the glove hooks off the end of the shock cord and thread the shock cord through the small eyelet at the bottom of the glove hook. Once done, tie the end of the shock cord to the d-ring where the glove hook was. This allows the glove hook to travel up and down on the cord, and you can use this to clip it to the small loops, instead of needing to lace it through each time.
@@PagosaCreative Yup, I ended up tying some paracord loops (2 in round) up at the top so its easier to loop the bungee thru... We'll see what those little clips are going to be like when its cold but I guess compromises for how light and spacious it is... Maybe there's a different type of clip out there that would be easier to use and just replace all of them on the insert...
Any updates of how the 1/2 insert had been holding up in the rain? I've been on the fence buying it especially for the price. Currently I use the regular Ultamid 4 with the bug netting and Tyvek.
Oh I’ve had absolutely no issues. The half insert is a bit of a bummer for 2 because of how it slants towards the wall. If you’re going to have 2 people i would do the full insert.
Should be pretty stellar. I just had a chance to really use to and I am shocked at how storm proof it is. It barely moves in the wind and it doesn’t stretch due to moisture.
God I wanted to watch this review, I really did but I just couldn't take it. Just on and on about things that have nothing to do with reviewing the product. After mentioning that he got the green color instead of white for I believe the 12th time I turned it off..
Been using a kifaru 6 man for years and looking at this set up hard. I think ya just pushed me over the cliff. Thanks!
It’s a really great set up and so versatile.

Very nice review. I have the Ultamid 4 with the full insert, after watching your video I ordered the 1/2 .
It’s such a great set up! I recently got the full insert as well. I see merit to both set ups.
This looks like a perfect long term 1 person shelter.
I’ll sell my 2300sqft house, my Tesla model X and my dog to finance this tent.
Good review and video. Really appreciate you posting this. 👍
Nice review.
Thank you...

They just recommend using a strap. Quite frankly I don’t trust the stability of two trekking poles lashed together.
Good vid.
Thank you!

Yup! I did this on a recent trip. I really like that set up.

@@PagosaCreative I went for it. Already have a night spent in it and loved it. Looking forward to the next trip out. Thank you!🙏🏼
now a one year review:D

Hi, great vid. Do you know, can the half insert also be installed in the back.across or only rather on either side lengthwise as you did ?
Yes, you can pitch it along the rear of the tent and that has actually become my preferred method.

Interesting. That seems a bit fiddly. I hate fiddly, especially when it's freezing and I don't want to take my gloves off.

Curious why you splurged for the green vs the white?
You went from 5300grams tent to literally ten times less, 652 grams. It means you can carry 10x more food now haha
Sadly it’s all gone to camera gear. I’m the only ultra light guy that still has a 60lb pack.

@@PagosaCreative thank you, that was also one of my concerns
Great review - how do you think it will do in winter conditions 💁
Should be pretty stellar. I just had a chance to really use to and I am shocked at how storm proof it is. It barely moves in the wind and it doesn’t stretch due to moisture.
Thanks very much 🌧🙂
I camp every winter on Mount Rainier and it's a perfect tent. Dig down in the snow and you can easily stand up everywhere. It's luxurious.
Thanks for your reply
Any place to hang a light on the inside?
Not that I saw. Headlamp or bust I guess!
Can’t hear a word

Well, sorry 'bout that. Thanks for the feedback.
