  • In this video, Rick explains the differences - and the misconceptions - about gelatin capsules and vegetarian (not vegetable) capsules.
Many people believe that vegetarian capsules are a healthier alternative to a gelatin capsules, but that is just not the case. It is simply a gelatin alternative. Both capsule types take about the same amount of time to digest in the stomach, and neither is used a food very efficiently by the human body. Gelatin does however have some benefits that vegetarian caps do not, such as a supplement for bones, joints, hair and nails.
Please find the full transcript below:
Hey Friends. Rick Calvert, Empty Caps Company, explaining the difference between a gelatin capsule and vegetarian capsule. A lot of people think that vegetarian is a
Better capsule, or healthier capsule, because they think "well it's made of fruits and vegetables" and all that kind of good stuff. But actually vegetarian is just an
Alternative to gelatin capsules. Gelatin as you may or may not know is derived from
bovine hide. And a lot of people don't like the idea of eating an animal. Either they're vegetarian, or for religious purposes they don't consume animals and so the vegetarian capsule is an alternative to the gelatin. The vegetarian capsules are actually derived from something that occurs naturally, or its semi-synthesized and it's known is HPMC by the initials. It's also known as Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose or Hypromellose is a more common-used name. It's been used for a very very long time as as gelatin. It's a little more expensive and that's why I say if you're not a vegan, vegetarian, or for religious reasons, there's no reason not to take gelatin. How to tell the difference between a vegetarian and a gelatin capsule: I'm going to turn the bags around here so you can see the two of them side-by-side and on your left is a vegetarian capsule. On your right is a gelatin capsule and if you can see usually the gelatin is a little lighter and clearer than the vegetarian capsule. So a lot of times you can tell the difference simply by comparing the colors of the two capsules and the clarity. As I said gelatin tends to be very clear and vegetarian tends to be a little cloudy. Another way that you can tell the difference is by taste! A vegetarian capsule if it is derived from HPMC as I mentioned usually has a little bit of a pine taste to it and that's what you'll get with that. Gelatin tends to be pretty inert; doesn't have much of a flavor at all but you will with a vegetarian capsule notice a "piney" kind of a taste which of course because HPMC is derived from Southern Pine Bark and NOT from fruits and vegetables and NOT from soybeans or anything like that. So those are the differences between gelatin and vegetarian, and I hope we've been helpful. If there are any questions that we can ever answer, please contact us online: emptycaps.com. I'm Rick Calvert, President, Empty Caps Company. Along with my wife, Kelly, we look forward to your business!

Thanks for the information! Very informative, concise and to-the-point comparison.
I wanted to mention some variation in my experience with HPMC derived veg-caps vs. bovine derived gel-caps (both clear):
HPMC can have other additives for various and necessary reasons - which can change color composition. (not always more "tinted"; sometimes clearer)
GelCaps can also have added ingredients, although by and large - the ingredients are almost always tasteless/odourless.
Best measure to determine the difference: The taste - every producer I've used worldwide has provided a tasteless gelatin capsules, which always (In my experience) contrasts with HPMC derived capsules that can have a pine-taste as mentioned - to a neutral "starch taste" (think corn starch dissolved in water - as the texture of powder is not present). Vegetarian capsules always have a taste, and although sometimes subtle, it is comparable in taste to other cellulose products (MCC excluded), and amino acids such as glutamine, l-theanine, l-tyrosine, etc.

Thanks You for making this video! First I like most people thought v-caps were made of fruit and vegetable by product as in using leftover fruit and vegetable from other companies. Not striping the bark from pine trees that can't be good for the pine trees. I recently started to make my own supplement capsules and was wondering which was the better option. after seeing your video I did some research and it seems the gelatin caps are better for you. Happy I know this now and I can save on capsules prices as v-caps sell for 15 compared to 10 for gelatin. I also wonder how bad the damage to the pine trees is...

Hi Shiney Shite - It has been my experience over the past two decades that the only time a capsule becomes useless is if it has been left exposed to heat or dry conditions (or overly humid). If it's pliable and doesn't crack, and kept in a cool, indoor location, generally they will last well beyond the expiration date.

Not sure if this is safe but while pregnant I loved savoring the outer coating of the whole food vitamins I was taking. So I ended up purchasing two different packs of empty pill capsules, one gelatin and the other cellulose. So I practically eat empty pill capsules everyday because I like the taste of them. Is this safe? 😆🥴

When consuming gelatin capsules, it's easy to feel confident that you're not getting too much. After all, Jell-O is made from the same material, and it would take a lot of capsules to equal even a teaspoon of Jell-O! Cellulose is just as inert and has been used as a thickening agent for food for many decades.
