ROW THE BOAT: PJ Fleck and Minnesota Football Sinking?

  • What direction is Minnesota Golden Gophers football heading as we approach the 2024 college football season? Will PJ Fleck and his team be a factor? The Gophers replace departed quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis with an FCS quarterback. And he is backed up by two freshman. We are nervous about the Gophers passing game and we will describe why in detail.
    RUNNING GOPHERS
The good news for Minnesota football is that they are loaded at running back. Three time Big Ten Freshman of the Week running back Darius Taylor is back after missing most of the second half of the season. Jordan Nubin who torched Michigan State for over 200 yards is back too! That is right! Loaded! And they have some veterans blocking up front.
Defensively, we thought Minnesota was pretty good last year with 12 interceptions and 26 sacks. And their best sack leaders are returning and ready for a big college football season.
    BOAT IS SINKING
After a disappointing 6-7 college football season last year, we think a lot of wins will be hard to come by during this season. Join us as we analyze each game on the slate and come up with a win total.
Finally, we look ahead to the weekend with Big Ten Classics on the Big Ten Network right here with Craig Shemon's Locked on Big 10.

Gopher football is a quarterback driven team, every drive the quarterback needs to make a play and I’m not saying pass or run I’m talking about making a “play” , last year the quarterback couldn’t come through the way they needed him to, and he cost the defense their identity which is to stay on the sidelines most of each quarter and put the hammer down in the fourth and let the kicker win the game as time runs out. This year they have some maturity at quarterback and I believe he understands what’s up with the philosophy of Golden Gophers football, keep the clock running, keep the defense on the sidelines and win the game. Don’t forget Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State, Northwestern and Iowa are cursed for screwing over past coaches, I’m not worried about them and I’m not worried about anything coach Fleck is doing, it’s all good in Minnesota.

B1G got a lot harder over the summer and the west division isnt there to help hide some mediocre teams anymore. Will be interesting to see how hot the seats are for coaches in what used to be that division after the next couple years.

All we needed was a QB. For the past two years, our QB sucked. Now we have a QB plus two good backups with one in the 2025 recruiting class. Minnesota just needs a healthy passing game, and we'll be just fine.

I like Coach Fleck. He's a classy guy with enthusiasm and has done a great job in past years - especially at WMU. I think in this NIL era it's hard to recruit because the kids want to go to warmer locations and flashy programs. Minnesota is a great university with great academic programs. This in itself should be a draw for potential players. But the kids are looking for NIL funds and to be developed into NFL draftees. These are the challenges Coach Fleck has in recruiting.

I also like Coach Fleck. But when it comes to NIL,Minnesota isn't facing any issues that Wisconsin,Iowa, or Nebraska don't also face.
It comes down to the Athletic department and boosters continuing to set the bar that it's good enough for the Gophers to make a bowl
every year and make some real noise in the conference every ten years or so, or do they match Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska, where
they at least state they expect to contend for the championship every year even if they come up short.

Considering the Gophers empty NIL war chest, it’s going to be a tough few years for gopher men’s athletics.

    • @hotdangers
      @hotdangers Před měsícem

Those problems pre-date the NIL era. Minnesota has always been cold and some kids like to go to college in warmer areas. Those things have nothing to do with NIL.

Not his fan, but it’s hard to consistently win at 8+ wins per year. I wouldn’t write him off yet. If he racks up 5-7 wins per season over next year or two, his seat will become white hot in this environment though I would expect.

As far as college football, it isn't the first time that a team had QB issues that derailed a year (2023). Unless you are OSU or Oregon most B1G teams don't have 4 & 5 Stars waiting in line. In terms of Transfer QB - Max Brosmer I'm not sure why you think he is such a question mark/risk. I'd take a guy like this who has proven performance you can evaluate unlike some kid who is a backup at another FBS program with no real college experience to evaluate. Here are some of his stats last year - Passing Yards per Game: Ranked #1 in FCS with 314.9 yards per game. Total Offense: Also ranked #1 in FCS with 325.0 yards per game. Passing Yards: Second in the nation with 3,464 passing yards. Passing Touchdowns: Second in the nation with 29 touchdowns. On top of that we have heard from other evaluations that Minn has a top-five O-Line in the B1G as well as many have rated them as having a top-five RB room. Doesn't sound like a 4 win team. Then on Defense, take a look at new DC - Corey Hetherman. Before his recent stint at Rutgers, he served as the defensive coordinator at James Madison University (2019-2021) and Maine (2015-2018) in the FCS. Here’s a glimpse of James Madison’s defensive rankings under Hetherman: (2021): 7th in scoring, 8th in yards, 1st in turnovers, 8th in sacks. (2020): 8th in scoring, 5th in yards, 21st in turnovers, 13th in sacks. (2019): 3rd in scoring, 1st in yards, 11th in turnovers, 2nd in sacks. FYI... Maine stats are quite good as well. Yeah, I think he can coach, so the Minn defense is likely in good hands. Overall a pretty shallow analysis of Minn with little time spent on it.

Schedule is tough. Need to beat NC first game. Need to beat Iowa at home. Need to beat UCLA on the road. There is mystery here. We could have a powerhouse running game. We could have a decent passing game. Defense has some holes to fill in secondary with talented youth called upon sooner than expected because of the need. PJ will have to face risk.

I’m appalled at your assessment of Minnesota. You missed so many positive talking points. By comparison you praised Nebraska with a unproven freshman quarterback. Nebraska hasn’t been relevant for over 10 years. Nebraska has won the preseason championship for the last 10 years and died on the vine every season.

38 seasons since Lou Holtz left us high and dry. It’s been a cursed program ever since. I could probably list five seasons in that time that were memorable because they were legit big 10 contenders, and a top 25 program in the country. The rest has been filled with underachieving talent, celebrating bottom feeder bowl games and barely being a worthy member of the Big Ten. So anyone that sees this program as on the uptrend is drinking too much kool aid. The experiment with FLECK is close to being over, short of them finishing in the top five of the B10.
