  • Not only was this the first-ever handheld Smash Bros. title, it was also the first time I ever developed a game for two consoles simultaneously! It may sound like a reckless decision, but I had good reason for doing so.

@@Gonsoi As much as I like having him working on this series, I can't help but think it would probably be better for his health to start taking just a consultant role. He won't be able to actively work on it forever, let's be honest. Someone will have to replace him at some point, that's just how it goes. And we've already seen similar situations in the industry where the original creator took the consultant role later on and it ended up turning out well. Smash Ultimate was a special Smash, the last Smash game he envisioned with his long-time friend, collaborator and co-creator Iwata-san. This Smash game had to be special, as the original name of the game translates to.

These games are almost ten years old now. How time flies.
I’ve been working on a book for the past several years. Its main inspiration is Paper Mario TTYD. The earliest stages of my work took root close to the end of 2014, right after when the 3DS version dropped. The Paper Mario stage reminded me that TTYD was turning ten years old, so I decided to replay it for its anniversary. After finishing it, I thought “we’ll never get a game like this again.” But then I had the thought “unless I make it”, which led to the genesis of my work in early 2015.

It’s sad that some people forget how big of a deal Smash 4 was back then, after Ultimate just kinda became its official substitute.
I remember the anticipation (even better than Ult’s imo) and how, after its release, everyone agreed that it was the perfect middle ground between Brawl’s slower, casual-friendly pace and Melee’s fast and frantic gameplay. I remember how excited people were for the newcomers, the HD support and the 3DS version.
I remember that amazing main theme, the memorable Miiverse integration, the custom moves, the online play actually allowing a decent degree of customization (I still, to this day, think Smash 4’s online was way better than Ultimate’s).
Really, it’s sad that Smash 4 isn’t remembered as fondly as the others just because it didn’t have a special gimmick tied to it like Brawl’s story mode and Ult’s “everyone is here!”.
I remember how the characters actually began playing like in their origin games, instead of having original movesets (If Megaman was added in Melee, I can guarantee he would’ve been punching and kicking like everyone else instead of shooting projectiles). It felt like a shift happened with 4’s gameplay design philosophy and it led to Ultimate’s amazingly varied and unique roster.
It was “just another Smash game” but it was a damn refined one, broken Bayonetta or not.

I've been WAITING for this one for a long time now! With all the stuff that the game added to it as well as have that fantastic Smash Run mode, Smash 4 has been my absolute favorite game on the 3DS and it ended up being one that I spent SO much time playing out of all the games in both the series, with Smash Brawl being second to it, AND in the 3DS library as a whole! Heck, I played this game so dang much, I ended up loosening the rubber part of the Circle Pad to the point where it would move around separately from the Pad itself! It was THAT GOOD.
Heck, I was so excited for this one, this ended up being the first game I ever attended a midnight opening for at my local GameStop. And my GOD was it a marvelous experience. It legit was one of the most happiest times I could ever recall having.
And I can't tell you how much I've spent so much time playing the Smash Run mode and building my own roster of Mii Fighters... Enjoying all that on top of the main Smash mode on there was something that not even Smash 4 Wii U or even Ultimate replicated overall. That's not to say that the Wii U version wasn't a lot of fun itself. The 8 player smash mode and the ability to use my GameCube controller on it made for some fun experiences in itself, especially as a solo player. Smash Tour was decent with its Mario party like esthetic but in the end, I always kept on going back to Smash Run on the 3DS version. And that Stage Creator was certainly quite a bit of fun to mess around with too, even though my creative mind wasn't as it used to be back when the mode was introduced back in Brawl. And don't get me started on those DLC fighters. MAN, were they something else! Especially when some of the guest fighters were introduced both in there and in the main roster! I could hear the reactions from a certain Dood and Joy-Con Boi to this day when thinking back at those reveals...
Looking back at this entry, it really was such a incredible time being a gamer back when the 3DS and Wii U were the main platforms. Especially with these games being a part of it. It's one of those games that make me wish I could go back and relive those days back when gaming was actually more fun than it is now. And when I play Ultimate from time to time, even with its own insane expanded roster from all of Smash's history... It just makes me wish I could enjoy some of what the 3DS release had to offer on there. World of Light is cool and all, but in the end... It just doesn't compare to Smash Run. And it just makes me wish that that was added into the game more.

If you wait until a project releases before designing the next one, you have to lay a ton of staff off because you have no need for modellers, animator, composers and so on when you’re writing up design documents. I love Ultimate, don't get me wrong, and that is probably objectively better game...but the hype for Smash 4 was off the charts for me. It all has to do with the novelty and timing of this game vs Ultimate.
Smash 4 was the game to revolutionize the art of the mind-blowing character trailer, to bring us a whole slew of truly unique characters and play styles, to really push the third party inclusion element with the likes of Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta, to bring Smash to HD, to make DLC and game patches a thing, to bring us 8 player Smash, and the list goes on. The jump from Brawl to Smash 4 truly was huge.
Smash 4 brought us a Kid Icarus anime style trailer for Palutena/Dark Pit, Fire Emblem Awakening style trailer for Robin/Lucina, comic book art style for Little Mac, the 8-bit to modern day transition of Duck Hunt, badass moonlit duels for Mega Man and Bowser Jr, Iwata and Reggie pummeling each other to introduce Mii Fighters, Corrin choosing to join Smash over his family...and the list goes on.

The Mega Man 2 medley remix was super awesome, the visuals and editing were super impressive, and seeing Mega Man use all the powers from various games was so cool. I think traditional players underestimate the appeal of stuff like the "variable strength" mentioned here.
So many gamers audibly groaned when the Mii Fighters were confirmed for Ultimate, but I swear back in high school everyone would ask me to bring my 3DS just so we could make Miis of our friends, local celebrities, etc, and pin them against each other; we always got a kick out of it.
It's a very different way to enjoy a fighting game, but it hits the mark for what they were trying to do and there's more people who appreciate it than you'd think.

One thing I think many don't know about the Wii U is that, while it's easy to tell it supports the same analog AV connection types as the Wii, its support for the Wii's YPbPr output was actually *extended* with full HD support! Thus, even if the HDTV you wanted to plug it into was older than HDMI, you could still see your Wii U at its best!
As a bonus tidbit, the Playstation 2 and original Xbox also support HD YPbPr video modes.

I remember back on the Smash Bros for WiiU/3ds days, I was still in middle school. That first trailer with the Villager reveal and the comeback of all the other franchises was the most exciting thing I had ever seen
Smash not only brought together a lot of characters that I loved, but it also introduced me to many new game series I hadn't played before, like Persona. I remember watching the trailers for Megaman and Shulk, and while I didn't know those characters at the time, I loved that they were included in the game because of the love put into the cinematic trailers and the gameplay for the characters. Today, I still get hype by watching any of the Smash bros trailers through the years

Shulk was one of my most wanted newcomers for Smash 4 and I was so hyped at the reveal.
It's a shame how the 3DS version ended up dragging down Wii U with it. Smash Run was great, though. Loved the expansive map and all the enemies. Should have come back in Ultimate with some new maps, like the Underground Maze and Race to the Finish from Melee.
The DLC characters took me completely by surprise. I had my expectations low and didn't expect many new third-parties or returning veterans this time. Mario and Fire Emblem got every veteran back PLUS multiple new fighters.

I feel like Smash 4 is kind of overlooked these days. Brawl's my favorite, and that game has thankfully gained a bit of a resurgence in recent years now that the mid-2010s comp craze has died down and people are starting to appreciate Brawl on its own merits again. That said, Smash 4 by contrast seems almost _completely_ forgotten, and I think that's a shame. It did a lot of cool experimental stuff that I feel went unappreciated in its time, stuff with potential to be polished up in a future installment but which Ultimate ended up leaving on the table - not that Smash 4 didn't also leave some potential on the table itself. Also just the fact that the 3DS and Wii U are my favorite systems in general.

This right here demonstrates how brilliant the concept of uniting the handheld and home console divisions of Nintendo; into the hybrid form factor of the Switch. Not only was it a win for consumers; but developers as well. There is no way Nintendo is ever going back to making either or and I think the hybrid form factor is part of their company identity now. It's just to efficient of a model to ever get rid of. These videos from Sakurai; also demonstrate that while Nintendo is a company that wants to make money; they are also fans of gaming (unlike the other two big companies) and Nintendo probably wants to do what most of their fans want; when it comes to what they will deliver.

Even though I loved these games back in the day, I HAVE to thank Smash 4 for giving the world amiibo. Not only are they a way for people to get figures of their favorite characters at a low cost, but it even gave some characters who may have never otherwise gotten figures just that, a figure! Sure, eventually a company like Good Smile might have gotten around to it, but did anyone really ever expect anyone to make figures for Olimar, G&W, Wii Fit Trainer, etc.? Nope, but Smash gave us just that. And or course, we would eventually see that branch out into other series like Splatoon.
Even if people stop playing these games, that legacy will always remain in the form of amiibo figures.

    • @ARDIZsq
      @ARDIZsq Před rokem

@@leftyfourguns Amiibo have been pretty dead even before then, like 2018-19. I think most of it is just due to developers not caring about adding in amiibo functionality into their games, and the reason amiibo started in the first place, Smash, was just down to newcomers and DLC fighters. Basically, the well went dry, demand decreased more and more over time, and it's never really recovered since.
The only amiibo I can ever find in stores is the Samus and E.M.M.I two pack, and MAYBE a Steve and Alex two pack on occasion. We just got Pyra and Mythra released, so we're close to Smash being done with amiibo. I think the last amiibo figures that might come out are Deep Cut for Splatoon 3, and even those might not release until near the end of that games life. It's sad to see, but at least the memories were fun.

Say what you want about Brawl having a campaign mode and Melee having a campaign mode and bloody Fox, but Smash 4 was _my_ Smash game. The Wii U game was the first Smash game that I ever owned and I even booted it up yesterday to dump the ISO to play on my Steam Deck (sadly, it wouldn't dump for some reason. Didn't stop me from just booting up the game anyway for the kicks), and the 3DS game has something extra special about it: you see, it is surprisingly easy to mod a 3DS. This means that it is also surprisingly easy to mod a Smash Bros. Granted, the game chugs if you use SaltySD, but it meant I was able to have Buzz Lightyear, Gordon Freeman, Knuckles the Echidna and General Grievous fighting at Dr Wily's Fortress. The fighter customiser made the modding experience even better as I was able to make the fighters even closer to how they were in their source material. Smash Run also meant I could grind out custom specials for modded fighters. As a final aside, Smash 4 also helped me get into a bunch of classic franchises and may be part of the reason why I'm now a big retro gamer.
