Watching this back and taking notes... sneaky tempo changes between the intro/verse/chorus. Only 2 bpm... but that's sneaky and bold! Wish I had noticed that during the live stream so I could have asked how that was tracked. Maybe when I watch the QA someone caught it!
Back “in the day” I edited songs for a dance studio. Most of the songs that were recorded by real bands had tempo fluctuations. For example if i edited a song for the first verse, first chorus and then jump to last chorus many times the last chorus is trucking in tempo compared to the beginning of the song.
I am a huge fan of letting the song “breathe” when it comes to tempo. I’ll often slightly increase tempo on choruses and bridges as the song progresses.

@@amremorse Yes, there are a few that I feel like kid on christmas when they come out with a video. Marc Daniel Nelson, Dan Worall, Paul Thirs, Mixbus TV (sometimes), Whytse are all great - it just feels like way less than a couple years ago.

I appreciate that he doesn't treat tracking and mixing as separate processes. I get that if you're mixing other people's music they truly are separate. But as someone who records and mixes my own music, it's never made sense to me to think of them that way.
I'm not just talking about picking out the right guitar amp or microphone either. I'm constantly adjusting balances as I go and applying basic effects. That's not to say I won't change anything later. But how can I know if two sounds fit together if the balance is way off? How can I know if something is working if I arbitrarily refuse to add reverb because I want to wait for the mixing process?
I'm basically building my mix like a puzzle as I track. By the time I get to the end of recording, there's not much to mix. I can't be the only person who works this way. And yet every CZcams channel I watch acts like mixing doesn't start until recording ends. It's always seemed very alien to me, and so it's nice to hear a point of view closer to my own.
Oh, and on another note, that spring reverb on the bass sounds amazing. Another common bit of internet is wisdom is "don't add reverb to bass." So much for that theory too.
Most good producers try to mix their song as they go, but if the budget allows it, the song goes to different engineers for mixing and mastering.
Thats not the case for us, and this type of tutorial helps us develop our mixing skills until we can afford to pay others to do it.
You're entirely right, the workflow in this type of tutorial is not super relatable for most musicians.
@@Octwavian Totally. Having an outside perspective can help. I think that's part of why producers and labels like to bring in outside mixers. But the goal should always be to make the product as good as possible at every step of the way. If the mixer has a great rough mix to reference, and the tracks are well played and the sounds are well chosen, it's going to be easier for them. Same for the mastering engineer if they have a great final mix.
But like you said, for many of us, bringing in outside people isn't an option. And so it makes sense to think of tracking, mixing, and mastering almost as three parts of the same process. I suspect a lot of people work this way. It's just not reflected in the way CZcamsrs talk about it.
When I mix and master music, including my own, I put it all together as a mix itself. Sometimes I put the whole master chain sound on the master track, then mix around it. This allows me to get complete control over my mixes, and it sounds polished ahead of time. This is good for the client as I can carve out what the final mix will sound like. There are no wrong ways to a great sound. I am essentially mixing + mastering until it's done.

yeahhh I really don't like the super bright and brittle snare sample either. I feel like it kills any of that nice vintage quality for the real drums
I always wonder how much this information is applicable to EDM.. So, to what extent is this appliccable to EDM ?
A lot of the vocal treatment concepts are going to carry over for sure.
The idea of sculpting drum tones by layering additional samples instead of running straight for EQ and compression is super relevant too.
His general approach to EQing and layering guitars is applicable to synths in EDM.
Elsewhere you will have to pick and choose. Are you likely to add reverb to bass in EDM? Probably not. But you’re also not likely to add it to most rock or pop either… that said, seeing that sometimes you CAN break rules like that at the highest levels is super inspiring and that kind of attitude can translate anywhere.

I thought you weren't supposed to solo tracks when you're mixing?
He basically never does! According to his Q&A, which you can find here: czcams.com/video/eQ6xdagZcpE/video.html But for demonstration purposes, he wants to help you hear what's going on in even more detail I think.
He knows what he's listening for when all the tracks are playing. But YOU don't necessarily know what he's listening for, so highlighting it for a demo can be helpful.

why do all tutorials present these types of weird indie music? I mean the whole world listens to top 40, but its like nobody in this community cares about it. I looked everywhere and 90% of all tutorials showcase WEIRD atypical mixes, like we're all just hobbyists and nobody cares about the relevant pop sound of our times...
We have all sorts of music on MixCon. You just need to watch more of them!
We’ve had on big pop artists (Jamiroquai), major fusion artists (Snarky Puppy), chart topping hip hop (Da Baby) major heavy artists (Breaking Benjamin) and countless others who have sold tremendous amounts of records or rack up tremendous amounts of streams.
We’ve had pop, folk, country, rock, metal, EDM, hip hop, punk, R&B, singer songwriter, Latin and so on.
Even when the artists aren’t huge platinum selling and Grammy winning ones, the mixers often are. We try to get a wide array of genres every year, and ironically, this year skewed more toward pop, with 4 of the presentations being classified as some type of pop.
Granted, at least two of them this year were what you might consider “indie pop”. But in such styles, you’ll often find the kinds of production choices that are made in mainstream pop in the future.
It is true however that not every mix has an artist who is trying to be Taylor Swift or Cardi B or Lady Gaga or Drake or The Weeknd. Though we love that kind of presentation too!
As big as the biggest records are, they aren’t necessarily representative of the majority of records that people actually try to MAKE. So, we try to have something for everyone.
Go through the MixCon playlist, and I am 100% certain you will find some tracks that are relevant to you. That’s why we have such variety!

You can always hear a snippet of the song right in the beginning.
That said, even if surfy upbeat indie pop isn’t relevant to any specific artists you are working with, the PRINCIPLES of production you’re going to learn from Joe here are relevant in a wide variety of styles.
If you have any specific requests for producers or artists or styles though, please let us know! “Top 40” itself is an extremely vague term that can encompass anything from electronic pop to singer songwriter to rock to Latin to hip hop to R&B and so on. It isn’t one style.

There's a handful of engineers who handle those pop tracks, and especially the major player has never given a video interview about his mixing, let alone a tutorial. There might be some tough legal restrictions with some of the pop stuff as well.
@@xanderpills not legal restrictions, but little secret hacks and techniques that do make a real difference, and they keep to themselves.
@@Octwavian True, when you're on the top of the game it's best to keep the fingerprint hidden. Understandably so. Plus these guys always have work on their plate, so keeping quiet on the public front probably does service for the work.
His microphone is just way too loud.....
His voice does duck down the music on occasion so you can hear him better. On this presentation he's talking while the music is playing a lot, so I think the mixer rightly erred on the side of keeping the music down slightly relative to the voice, so you can be sure to hear what he's saying.
But I get it, sometimes it's more fun to have the music a little louder than the voice! Sounds a bit more powerful that way, and you can maybe hear some additional details. Though you potentially lose some of what the speaker is saying when the music and audio play at the same time.... It's probably my general preferences as well.

I never realized how many different reverbs and delays you could use at once. I always thought it causes problems to have different reverbs at once.
