yay for your friend! i hope he sticks with it and drops that cholesterol.
Much love and respect to your friend not only for going Vegan but for also being a fireman. Those men are heroes. I hope he sticks with his new lifestyle.
Wow! Only a week and trying the stricter diet. All the luck to you. With Chris' help though you should be great. Thanks for showing his journey!🌱🙌💚
I'm rooting for your friend Chris! You're a good friend and inspiration, and with your knowledge and experiences he's gonna reach a whole new level of health (while eating tasty foods too;)🙌🌱💪🔥
I'm vegan but couldn't follow your diet so kudos to him, a meat eater, willing to try a stricter vegan diet.
To be continued? Nooooooooooo!!! We have to keep our heroes fit and healthy!! Thanks Chris!
love this video! amazing that this guys tried the no salt no oil vegan diet from being a omnivore. Good for him, that's seriously amazing.
Just a tip: Right now while cherries are in season, it's great to buy a bunch of them when you can get them on sale and freeze them for smoothie bowls. I'll just wash them, pick a time to watch a show or video and sit on the couch and pit them, then put them in a freezer bag. My favorite smoothie bowl is banana cherry. I don't even love cherries on their own, but MAN in a smoothie bowl with a little granola and blueberries sprinkled on top... YUM!
I'll have to try it out. Thanks!
Jennifer S yes I will have to do that. I have never done that with cherries. What are the measurements that you use for your smoothie bowls
Dianne roy For one smoothie bowl I'll use about 1 frozen banana and a big handful of frozen cherries.. . maybe 8 total plus a few ice cubes because I like to keep the smoothie bowl really thick! Then just enough unsweetened vanilla soy milk to blend. Enjoy!
wouldnt it be cheaper just to buy the already frozen cherries?
trash can I suppose it depends on where you live but I just got fresh cherries for .99 /lb. and even taking into consideration the weight of the pits it seems like more than I'd get in a frozen bag.
Love that others are learning by example. we should all live like you and teach others how to be vegan and awesome! this was fun video I would love to see more of his journey if he wants to share it ,also how family is liking it.
Its awesome that you guys have been friends for so long! Its also awesome that he is open to trying this diet as an omnivore. I can't see myself eating like this, and I'm vegan!
for flax seeds: I'd get the whole seeds and put them in the blender for a couple of seconds before use since I've heard that packaged ground flax seeds loose nutrients over time.
for the peppers: I'd wouldn't get the mixed colors as they are basically just less ripe versions of the red one. so I'd only get red ones.
I've been eating sos free for a few years now (and gf vegan for 7 years). Food tastes so much better without the sugar, oil and salt. I'm enjoying these videos. Please keep them coming! Congratulations to your friend for embracing a healthy and kind diet.
My daddy was FDNY, Engine 160. He's gonna do great! Before you know it, they'll see his results an his entire family and the firehouse will be vegan.
You are awesome! And way to go on your friend for taking steps toward being healthy! I think it shows incredible strength and character when a person is willing to admit that they need to make healthy changes, and then actually follows through. Best of luck and here is to hoping it leads to a permanent change in lifestyle!
Great format, I'm looking forward for more of it to come!
Kudos to your friend, for making such a great step in his diet.
Fingers crossed for success!
So cool. Best of luck to your friend! Way to have an open mind. 👍👍👍
You are such a great friend😊
This will inspire many🤗
Yesss! So excited for Jay!! Can't wait to follow his progress. :)
So cool that you support your friend like that! Starting my healthier lifestyle from tomorrow on :-))
Love seeing friends help friends transition. A beautiful, loving gift to give.
Have him go to the Healthy Eating Adventure website it is based off of Dr Esselstiens book. They have recipes and forums to go to. Also they do a 6or 8 week workshop where they go in depth on the principles of cooking this way and have weekly potlucks he can bring his family. It also helps you get your fridge and pantry ready. Recommends what appliances you may need. It also explains his theory in depth. And they do starting blood work and ending blood work for free or discounted
Super enjoyed this, looking forward to the rest
Cool video! Good for him; it's super nice he has you to go to for help and questions. Alot of us didn't have that when transitioning!
Looking forward to seeing Jays Vegan journey x Great Video
I LOVE that you are helping your long time friend! I started the Engine 2 Diet and at the end of 6 days I lost 4.8 lbs! NOT craving processed foods after just after week - I'm amazed! Thanks for all the videos Chris
Way to go! Keep it up!
another inspiring video ! Best wishes to Jay !
Wishing your friend much success. Glad your doing this video
Thank you so much! These videos are so helpful. I’m a semi recent vegan and am trying to learn how to cook and eat in a quick, cheap, and more healthy way. That’s a tricky balance.
This is awesome! You're a great friend!
THIS IS AWESOME! Changing lives Chris!
It's wonderful that ur helping ur friend. I hope he makes this as a lifestyle change for a better health. I agree that ur friend should look into Rip Esselstyn who is also a firefighter like him. My son (18 y.o.)has similar issue with high cholesterol & I'm trying to help him eat healthier. It is very hard on a strict Esselstyn diet but I will keep working on it. I truly believe this is the way to healthy life. U r an inspiration! Keep up the plant based lifestyle!😋
It's great you guys were able to keep in touch these years! Really cool to see that. No matter where our life paths take us, we're all walking it together, even if we never meet. It's something I try to remind myself: we're all here, we're all different, but not as unalike as we think. I was vegetarian since the early 80's, vegan since the 90's, but one thing I never do is shame someone for life choices. Most my friends aren't vegan, but over time some have started adopting some of the food choices. I know people get upset at animal cruelty, anyone with sense does, but remember many are just ignorant of what's involved. The best teacher is example, which you're doing a fine example right here on this channel. People who find themselves angry and try to change through anger need to step back and cure that emotion first, because anger doesn't heal. Personally, I find working with the soil, even small scale, helped, but everybody is different. Hope I wasn't too preachy. The consequence of old age. LOL
Chris b like, nuts to you Wegmen's, I'm FILMIN' in here! They're lucky you're showing people what they can get there. They should b giving you gift cards to shop there for your hard work.
Awesome !! Good luck to your friend.
WONDERFUL. ALL GOOD!! ALL THE BEST OF CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH! YOU'RE BOTH AN INSPIRATION! THANK YOU.
Dang abruptly left hangin. Was lovin the video
Does he know about the Engine 2 diet? He's a fire fighter so it might interest him. Of course it's probably the same as Dr. Esselstyn since it's Rip Esselstyn.
Hemo Kardia yes I told him about it. He was really interested at that point.
Rip Esselstyn's Ted talk was also really good, because it showed compassion, comeraderie, facts, plus really good looking plant based food.
How great - When your friend was ready, he was willing to try vegan! Isn't it amazing how long some people know us and yet won't commit to the cause? This journey will be fun to watch.
Good for Jay, having the gumption to try this! My experience is that it gets easier once one does it for a month or so (I think this is true for a lot of folks). Hang in there with it! Chris, you're documentation of your efforts toward lowering your cholesterol levels is also an enormous service to those interested in healthy eating. A clear demonstration of WFPB effects. Thank you!
this is wonderful as I am eating clean as well and I have dropped 6 Lbs. I do feel great and am so happy with a Plant based diet. This really suits me well and I did not eat any real stuff while transitioning. It's Just that Great. Love it. Chris thank you for all you do for us.
Great video! Thanks!
Oh no! I wasn't ready for the video to be over!!
This is amazing!! I am so excited and happy that your friend is trying vegan! I hope he loves it and sticks with it for the animals (watching slaughter house videos to see what actually happens really helps motivate one to stay away from animal products. If we cannot stomach watching it, then we have to ask why does it feel wrong and disgusting to watch how they turn animals into products we buy?)
Looking forward to more episodes!
Some people do it for the health benefits more so. But everyone should care about the animals and the environment.
That breakfast looks delicious! I would add PB2 powder on top as well! 😋
Nice, there are a few things here I might try myself!
makes me sad that the children are not being fed the same. lucky to have a friend like Chris. keep us posted
neef three one of them tried out Food and liked it. The other wouldn’t touch it.
This is just what I needed. Some good tips of what to do to lose weight with good healthy food. Sofar what I have been doing didn't work. So I will be waiting for it to be continued. About the flaxseed I didn't know. Will have to see where to get those and what it's called here in the Netherlands. Looking forward to see more of this. Thanks Chris and good luck Jay. 😉
Just found the dutch translation for flaxseed. 😂😂 lijnzaad. And I walk by it every single week not knowing what is was. See. Never too old to learn. 😂😉
Sandra Oranje I'm glad you're finding what works for you, that you keep learning. flaxseed is also sometimes called linseed, which is similar to lijnzaad - so if you're ever in an English speaking country, don't walk by either of them ☺️
Hey Chris, another great video! Wanted to tell you, you make the most comfortable shirts :) I've worn this one a few times, and always get people telling me how much they like it, too :) That smoothie bowl looked amazing, and the grocery haul... Sending good thoughts to you all there on the E. Coast, from OR!
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video AND my shirts :)
Love it!!! :D
your friend is ADORABLE!
Hey man great video! Soak your Chia first Ive recently learned it's kinda like flax where you can't absorb it and it causes some digestion problems due there ability to expand in liquid P. S (I grind up my oats before I add anything to my smoothie just to make it less noticeable but add in some healthy carbs and calories)!
Awesome video
Wonderful friendship❤️
Hey there, I saw recently a video of Dr.Greger(nutritionfacts) saying that also chia seeds need to be grounded up as flax to get most of the benefit out. I don't understand if yours are grounded or not, but just in case I leave you a comment if you didn't know it. Amazing vid, loving the healthy recipes
Love t his idea of showing non-vegan what to do!
Weggies!! I’m a Rochester native, now relocated to the Ithaca area. Wegmans is paradise. ;)
I really like WestSoy Organic Soymilk...just water and organic soy beans. So pure and delicious
my husband and I moved from Virginia to Washington state and this video makes me miss my wegmans so bad! lol
Heather Howe no Aldi either 😭
that too!
Elmhurst Milk is made only of nuts and water. No additives. I find it at Walmart.
8 pounds in one week?! Your body must be soooo happy! Keep up the great effort!
Great video! Have you looked into reducing plastic use? :)
I buy my Flax Seed whole and grind them in my blendtec so it remains fresh.
Do you do one on one counsel for living vegan?
Eatin' like a true boss. Dr Esselstyn would be proud.
Where do you buy the Oatley milk? Have not seen it here in Michigan....
Chris, have you found any cereal without added oil or sugar?
I guess you wouldn’t have tried the new A&W Burger today! (Still exciting though) 😃
I would love to follow esselstyn's recommendations....it's hard when you have a big family to cook for
Faith F there is no try; there is only do. it’s easy to forget the oil. Just use sauces and liquids to take away dry tasting foods
the problem is the time involved and the complication of my children's issues....I would be making at least three different meals each time (since I have kids who have to have extra calories and two kids with swallowing issues) ...i've been eating just raw oats with dates and a banana in the mornings...can't find the oatly milk anywhere near me though.... I guess my point is that when there's a large family, it's a little more complicated to implement....
Faith F There is never a reason not to take care of you. My wife eats meat. She also has to cook her own food. Living in a non vegan world I do a lot of batch cooking so it’s not so overwhelming.
Don't forget the bluuuberrrries! Blueberries! Blueberries!
This is almost the the same as my breakfast I eat every day. Ha.
Nice effort dudes.
I usually put the plant milk with the froxzen bananas to help blend them, other wise they get stuck and i use a 2200watt blender, poor blender XD
Luis GO V my blender takes care of all that.
Chia seeds soak up 10 times their weight in water so best to blend inside... or drink a big glass of water with them. And try toasting the oats in a dry skillet to give better texture & flavor. Oats aren't raw. They were steamed when they were rolled. So no harm in toasting; )
taintmueslix Oats have already exceeded that temp in processing. They are not raw. What I'm saying is - IF raw is NOT important to you - then toast them. If you want to eat RAW, avoid rolled oats.
taintmueslix Unless you're talking to a raw goodish, who would be outraged that you said boiling was "ok." It all depends on your lifestyle, intention, & beliefs, I guess.
I really like Silk unsweetened cashew milk. No added sugar or oil, and I don't think there's salt either.
i have a question with the oat milk that you use do you notice if your body produces a lot of phlegm because with soy milk i notice i do so ive been looking for a new milk....
I drop my cholesterol with the plant base food, I like see for he too, good luck.
Yeah it really works. After 3 months of being vegan my blood labs came out perfect and lost 40 lb and I have so much more energy, healthier, and cleaner.
I keep my flax and hemp and milk thistle in the fridge. Is that ok?
Just so you know, it seems you actually can't absorb much of the chia seeds without grinding them too. Check out Dr Greger's video on them.
Bad Ass Video! This is how you change the World!
My cholesterol is 157 and I eat a pretty normal veganish diet-- protein shakes, smoothies, veggie burgers, curries, salad and fruit, and occasional desserts.
Ack!! The unnecessary packaging on the broccoli and tomatoes makes me cray, but it's wonderful what you're doing!! I just notice this stuff, and get frustrated.
Lea F Yep. But it’s important to show him where to buy some of the cheapest ingredients so he can stick with it. Worry about packaging later.
3:20 do you eat raw oats?
I like to break up those rice cakes and eat them like popcorn as a snack.
Wow, the strict Essy diet? 6 cups of greens, not a speck of oil. All the best!
Engine 2 Diet?
I'm eating frozen bananas as popsicles, as I watch this😁🍌🍌🍌🍌
11:57 Well, that was unexpected! Now I left my pizza halfway done! How do I finish it? XD
V Verde part two will be up in a day or two. :)
Did he go back and get his cholesterol checked?
I use water to saute my veggies, I don't use oil anymore either!
Nothing like a quick D’oh!
Video ended too abruptly
I could be wrong, but i think every person that goes vegan will easily drop 5-15 pounds in the first week. It happened with me and the two other people that went vegan with me. Just a little tip. lol
He looks scared shitless at the first part of this vid 😂
Sadly, it's quite a bit of plastic. Also, chia seeds should also be ground or soaked. See nutritionfacts, chia seeds vs belly fat (or sth like that)
Till Renger I’ve seen it.
This is great! What is it with firemen? Dr Caldwell Esselstyn's son, Rip Esselstyn was a fireman and he challenged his whole crew to try vegan. Here's his story: czcams.com/video/AAkEYcmCCCk/video.html
Jerry Shaw I know. I told him about Rip and he got real interested. Told his whole crew at the fire station.
Esselstyn has never said no salt. Why zero salt?
dj121 He says avoid salt in cooking and at the table. I do use things with low sodium.
The Vegan Zombie I agree to not cook with it. Could you show me where he said to not even add it at the table? I don't think I've ever seen or heard him say that.
dj121 Yeah, and McDougall has said for people to use it if they feel the food is bland because it's better than them going back to the SAD way of eating. So in the beginning - whatever it takes.
dj121 Here is where I found it. I believe I saw an interview too but don’t remember where. www.foodasprevention.com/dr-esselstyns-latest-basic-recommendations/
The Vegan Zombie Thank for the link. It states his recommendation as "No more milligrams of sodium than there are calories per serving." And "adding a high sodium condiment is OK." He is very low sodium but not "no sodium." It's an important distinction for those trying to "follow the rules." ; )
not sure why Wegmans decided that they didnt want you to film..... being on your channel is free advertisement.
Can anyone tell me why these stores don't like it when people film in them?
Vegan Vape they are afraid someone will post something negative about them even though we told them that wasn’t the case with us.
Oh! That makes a little sense, I guess... Thanks🌱👍🏻💚✌🏻
Grind your chia seeds as well as your flax for even more ALA - nutritionfacts.org FTW
Is dropping 8 pounds a week really healthy? Assuming he really dropped 8 pounds and all of it is fat. That is a calorie deficit of 28000 calories in just one week. That is a 4000 calorie deficit in just one day. That doesn't seem healthy to me at all. I am not talking about the diet, I am talking about that much weight in so little time.
Meat is the best food change me mind
