    I used to be a fan when I was younger, and Lola also got on my nerves. Which was sad, because she was one of the few black girls on television at the time. My least favorite episode was the one where Tommy was grounded for supposedly stealing from a toy store, because management assumed that kids don't bring their own toys into a toystore. The toy in question was Robot Boy, which looks like nothing they sell! His parents don't check out the claim, as they have seen depowered Robot Boy tons of times and could clear up the misunderstanding, and instead ground him! Grrr!

    • @TwistedDanns
      @TwistedDanns  Před 7 lety +7

      +138veronica yeah... I never liked that episode, too. It showed how much distrust Tommy's parents had on him. Then again, I didn't like Tommy's parents even before that episode, so I'm relatively neutral on that episode.
      I don't think I have a least favorite episode. I only have a favorite, which is "Protoboy".

      I agree with your points on Lola. She was one of the only black girls in animation at the time and I liked her and felt represented. But I didn't like how she treated Gus at times. He was a disgusting cretin but sometimes the way she responded to him was too hostile.

    1:20 I should note that Moshimo didn't exactly have a ton of time to think it over, Kamikazi launched a surprise attack on his lab with a bunch of mutant Yetis.
    He also doesn't mind the public seeing him per say(He was originally made for the robot fighting leagues), just he doesn't want Tommy swarmed with bad attention. The show starts explicitly when it does because that's when Kamikazi finds him. Oh and he wants him to learn to be more like a true boy because the last time Kamikazi stole one of his robots and modified it was Protoboy which ended in disaster.

    Good review, it's understandable that its not for everyone, and I get it, so it's more on how the show and characters were written that lead to its mediocre reception, seems fair enough; though there were some cool moments back in the day with the show, and I don't think Robotboy is moronic, but more very naive considering it's nature as a young robot; but I solemnly agree with you, Tommy's family was crap, like literal rude and unlikable crap

    • @TwistedDanns

      Yeah, I can agree that Robotboy is very naïve.

    • @Merdicano
      @Merdicano Před 7 lety +5

      TwistedDanns true, but it was fun seeing him learning how to be a human, and I think Professor Moshimo might have give him to Tommy so he can learn to adapt more on how to be a human and relate with beings from his own age, I guess because Robotboy is essentially a kid

    • @TwistedDanns
      @TwistedDanns  Před 7 lety

      +Manuel David Rendon Acevedo I guess so. I just wish Moschino had a safer way to teach Robotboy how to be a real boy. Maybe he could summon Tommy to his apartment to visit Robotboy every day or something. Sending Robotboy to live with a kid is too risky.
      But I get it. Robotboy is essentially a kid and maybe it's more efficient to have him living with an actual boy to learn how to be a real boy.

    Well I will have you know that I LOVE Robotboy. Robotboy is #5 on my list of my FAVORITE animated television series, right under Foster's Home for Friends, Chowder, The Marvelous Flapjack and the Amazing Gumball. Why do I love Robotboy? This is mostly because of Tommy Turnbull. He is very cute, and I love his compassion for Robotboy. And, because his voice actor Lorraine Pilkington went on to voice Penny on the Amazing World of Gumball, that actually makes me a little accepting of Tommy having a female's voice. Speaking of voices, she makes Tommy sound like Arnold from hey Arnold, who also has a lack of emotion when he speaks. And no one complains about his voice! (Disclaimer: Hey Arnold is on my favorite show list too.) I also like the action, which can get very intense. I LOVE the animation style, it's what causes Tommy to look so cute. And frankly, I don't think not being seen by the public is doing anything to Robotboy's desire to be a real boy. He can still play games with Tommy and his three friends, so that should be plenty of company. Okay, so I do agree with you on Gus being obnoxious and annoying, but that's one minor complaint in a show that I absolutely adore. I love Robotboy even as an adult, and I am not ashamed of it.

    The 2000's gets way to much crap than it really deserves (especially 2006 to 2009), people like TheMysteriousMrEnter and his fans have bashed on this decade for having bad shows such as Squirrel Boy, Da Boom Crew, Out of Jimmy's Head and more. Whilst yes there were some really bad shows but on the other hand there were a lot of good shows such as; As Told By Ginger, Samurai Jack, Kim Possible, Justice League,/Unlimited, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Xiaolin Showdown, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends Phineas and Ferb, Spectacular Spiderman, Batman: The Brave and The Bold, Chowder, Wolverine and The X-Men, Ben 10, The Mighty B! and even leftovers from the 90s (most of which are really 00 shows) such as Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage The Cowardly Dog and The Powerpuff Girls. And you know what I'd say that the early 00's (2000-05) is defintely the best time in TV animation history, for having a lot of high quality shows (Samurai Jack, Avatar and Justice League/Unlimited are my three favourite cartoons of all time) and while yes there were bad shows, they aren't as bad as a lot of today's cartoons (I'd argue cartoons now are going trough a rough patch, with only a handful of good/great shows in a sea of mediocre/forgettable crap) Teen Titans Go, Breadwinners and Sanjay & Craig, Pig Goat Banana Cricket, Rabbids Invasion, PPG 2016, Pickle and Peanut, Future Worm, Right Now Kapow, Bunsen Is A Beast, Scaredy Squirrel, Zig and Zag, Rocket Monkeys, and so much more bad shows

    • @TwistedDanns
      @TwistedDanns  Před 7 lety +4

      +HA Animation I'll be honest. I also don't think the 2000s cartoons were as bad as some people tend to believe. Some of my favorite cartoons ever, like Billy and Mandy, aired during those years. You're also right about Mr. Enter giving the impression that the 2000s were beyond saving.
      However, a lot of crap came from those years and it was possibly the worst decade for Cartoon Network especially. I do kind of agree that we might be heading to a scary age of cartoons. While Disney XD and Nickelodeon are starting to pull their heads together (although there are still a few bad cartoons), Cartoon Network is heading south. There are still good cartoons there, but most of the recent ones like the crappy reboots are ruining the channel.

      HA Animation
      Mr. Enter acknowledges the good shows from the 2000s often but he does it passively so many people, including many of his fans, gloss over it. He doesn't do many full on reviews of the shows in that decade, so many come to believe that decade was pretty crappy. He does make some points on how bad this decade is for many cartoon but many glance over it.

    Now I understand this show had a lot of flaws but you kinda just hated on it way too much. My biggest problem with the show is the time line and the character development. The show has no proper time line and you can easily switch an episode from series 2 in series 1 and nothing would feel off. Also there's no character development. The characters never learn or change they've been the same throught the show. Even Tommy after being kissed by Lola and after realizing that Bambie is not for him he seemed to still have a crush on her in series 2. However other than that the show has a lot of potential if it just got a better treatment.

      Yo TwistedDanns, appreciate the reply especially since this video was uploaded a few months ago. But yeah everything you said was pretty much on point - the only thing this show has going for it is the fact that Robotboy is eye candy in normal mode, and badass in Superactivated mode - but that type of character is just not in its correct background (where the comedy is bland, the plots are lackluster, and each episode is 15 minutes long . . . not long enough action for a killer robot to do his fighting scene).

    Yeah, I remember Robotboy when I was a kid. For me the gibbest problem is the characters: Some of them have nothing special, some of them are annoying, and I mean really annoying. Other times we see dumb moments: For example, you already show clips from an episode whem Kamikaze disguises himself as Dr. Moschimo; it's realyl a dumb idea because seriously? Kamikaze is short while Moschimo is tall and skinny, and somehow this plan works? Doesn't Robot have a sensor detector to identify who is who? I know he's have a personality of a young kid but...really?
    And just liek you said about the episode when Bjorn Bjornson disguise as a scientist (with just a fake beard) tricks Robotboy to believe he could turn the robot into a real boy, only to put a single photo of a kid, and then convince him to kill his creater because he would turn into a robot again? Why?
    speaking of Bjorn Bjornson, he for me was made to be an annoying villain. I remember an episode when he faces Tommy's Robotbot with his own robot in a floating colisseum (don't ask), only to desperaly try to defeat Robotboy with not one, not two but 5 Bjornbots. And just went Robotboy manage to defeat them all....Bjorn says he cheated.... *sigh* glad Tommy and his friends just walk away from that loser...
    Yeah, that's my point: Annoying and dumb characters in their majority

      +Raphael Luck Lucas I completely understand you, especially the part about Robotboy being easily fooled. That's one of the biggest problems I have with Robotboy's character. He is easily manipulated by completely stupid tactics and everytime it happens, it drives him to do something even stupider than disguise itself. I know he's a robot, but this level of incompetency turns me off. Not even robots are that stupid.

      EDIT: Update
      Currently rewatching the third season so far, the episodes are tons better than when they were in the show's first two seasons. The first season was ok, but the show's second season wasn't very good. I'm in the middle of season 3 and the plots are pretty entertaining (actually doing things besides Robotboy being captured by Kamikazi for the 400th time) and the execution is pretty alright. The animation has improved greatly as well.
      I guess the weak episodes from the earlier seasons just gave me a bad impression and left a poor taste in my mouth. I have yet to watch the fourth. I guess I should've given the whole show a proper shot before of judging it prematurely based on my disappointing experience with the first few seasons.
      Admittedly, when I had written that OP comment, I had only just watched seasons 1 and 2. I probably shouldn't have done that when I did.

      The 2000s was not a dark time for animation, there were plenty off good shows unlike now ehere there's a lot of bas shows, we're currently living in a second dark age of cartoons, maybe even worse than the 1970s and especially with the movies that have come out this year (Smurfs, Spark, The Emoji Movie, Rock Dog, Boss Baby and the upcoming films such as The Nut Job 2 and The Star) yes I can say that we are living in a second dark age of western animation in whch none of the better shows on now (Steven Universe, Star vs The Forces of Evil) can save us from this horrible dreck we're living in (Teen Titans Go, The Powerpuff Girls (2016), Bunsen Is Beast, Billey Dilley, Cloudy, The Mighty Magiswords and more)

      However, the 2000s, especially around the middle and end, went through a bad age where cheaply made fash cartoons were pumping out even from the best channels (Cartoon Network).
      The 2010s started of well and we have witnessed some of the best cartoons ever. Sure, right now, we're seeing a bunch of really bad cartoons and all of them piss me off, but so far, I think this decade has done more good than bad.

    1:09 through 1:19 my opinion is, he was sent to a boy to be cared for and the robots "super activated" and strong and supernatural abilities are made for defense. i mean, if the villian of this show tries to steal robotboy because he was made from a better technician than him and can be reprogrammed to be owned by the villian, Dr.Kamikazi, the robot will have nothing to defend himself nor his friend tommy. besides, Professor Moshimo gave him those powers becuase he knew that robotboy's strength will be enough to defeat the villians ways. AAAAANDDDD...he was sent to be a true boy to learn various lessons, like stranger danger, grammar, and all the words in the dictionaries. Besides, in 206 "robotgirl" robotgirl did not know what tag,friend,fighting and even super activation was. My theory is professor moshimo mustve send him to tommy instead of teaching him himself becuase he is a busy man with a wife, and he does not think he is safe with his own hands. plus, he can not be seen in public becuase there is some news reporter that thinks robotboy is an alien robot. if robotboy is seen in public too much, lots of people will be frightened and try to destroy robotboy. And there is a possibility they might BOMB the turnbulls house. another opinion is how tommy loves robotboy, um...what? We all know that some people and well programmed robots needs some space or some problems between eachother. And, the voice actor for robotboy is a woman....so there is a reason why it does sound like a girl. BUT, i feel kinda offended about that....the voice actor: Laurence Bouvard tries very hard for robotboy's voice. She even made it sound like a japanese accent just for culture of the tv show. Laurence Bouvard has been learning about languages lately becuase her family has different languages, and she wants to know all of them. As you can see she has been doing this her whole life and been a hard worker ever since...as if you dont know, all the robots professor moshimo makes has a emotion chip mentioned on the very last episode of this show, which...you dont know becuase you said you wont watch the last two seasons...robotgirl in the last episode has a woman-like personality which well...the boys of the show EVEN robotboy cant understand. I do not think robotboys an idiot as you may think he is becuase he thought he was finally a boy. But he is a robot he still doesnt know the psychics of this world nor still not the whole dictionary of words. this is just my opinion. i dont mean any hatred >_

      +PaperJam Sans I get it. However, I personally think that it's not very safe leaving a dangerous weapon to a kid. If Mochimo really wants to teach Robotboy how to be a real boy, he could have found much safer resources to do so. I get his logic: Tommy is a real boy and he's a great tool to teach Robotboy how to be a real boy, but it's too dangerous and given that Kamikaze has attacked Tommy and his friends several times, I feel like Mochino should have realized how crazy it is to leave a danger magnet like Robotboy to a kid. I don't think Mochimo is that much of an occupied man with a wife. Sure, he's a busy dude, but most of the time, he's working on upgrading Robotboy anyway, so clearly, he's not much of a fully dedicated husband. I don't know.
      also, it's okay. I know it's not hatred.

    Hey, I just now stumbled upon your video while doing some research and ya know how the internet works, i ended up looking up the robotboy review instead. Even if this video is 7 moths old and I admit that I haven't watched any of your other videos, I still feel like i can give you some constructive criticism if that's ok. (I must add, this is in no way a defense for the show, I'm strictly talking about your review).
    I honestly feel like your focus on what's important is non existant, to say it lightly, as some of your points are quite aimless. But let's start from the begining, you start off giving a very clear impression that this is a negative review, which is completely ok, but I would argue that this kind of thing could be postponed for a better effect, but that's just a nitpick.
    Getting to the meat of things, you noted 3 things positive about the show, the art style (to be precise a "good character animation" and "decent backgrounds"), the main villains, and the soundtrack (which you later added, that it's over-used on occasions).
    When talking about the positives of the show it's natural to just list them off and let people know that these are subjective that you find enjoyable. While it was sparce in your video i think you did a good job on that.
    The real reason that made me want to just write up a comment here, is your lack of understanding (I would assume) of how critique works.
    First thing is the plot premisse.
    You said that it's improbable, unlikely to happen, a fantasy. And while I never accept the argument "This is just a cartoon it doesn't have to make sense", this is a different story. Cartoons like robotboy are character driven comedies, with a simple premise, and while logic must apply to actions characters take and the plot points, decisions etc. Putting real world science into them is not the same. Courage the cowardly dog is pink, get's contantly beaten and choked, yet somehow survives and is able to run while carrying a heavy old couple just to note a few things. Is it scientifically possible? No, it doesn't need to be, we are told very clearly he loves muriel and is trying to overcome any dificulty for her safety. As long as you don't thing that it's a dog doing it but a character it's all structurally sound. This is how you apply logic to a cartoon that doesn't operate on real life science. So stating that robotboy was imposible to create by one person and that he can't feel is an easy argument to break, because the show isn't trying to make us believe that creating such a robot is possible, but it's simply there to create a backstory for characters to share. I understand that you may feel that it could've been done better, but that's not the argument you presented, you said it's unrealistic and impossible, and show wasn't trying to make it either of those things. It's not the goal of the creators, so overall its just a nitpick and doesn't hold much power as an argument.
    Now when it comes to your opinion about the characters, "Tomy is composed of the most clishe protagonist traits" ... so? Cliche doesn't automatically mean it's bad. Whenever you use the "cliche argument" you need to be prepared to explain why it's bad in the situation it's used, I agree that tommy is bland af, and you might've had that on mind, but again THAT'S NOT WHAT YOUR ARGUMENT WAS. I get your intent behind this, i really do, It still doesn't excuse your lack of explanation, because the closest thing to that is calling him "boring and predictable", which is a little lacking. Overall I mean to say that you've wasted a good opportunity to talk about character traits and how repetition can ruin your enjoyment of watching someone on screen.
    Now the next thing is inexcusable, because you went into the "If i was in the place of Tommy i would..." No. Guess what? You're not the main character, the writer isn't the main character, Tommy is the main character, and he always will be. When storywriters do their job properly every obstacle, plot point and decision is put against the logic of the main character, and he has to confront them and the plot can bounce off that in a positive or negative result. Every reviewer needs to know that they should tackle any plot inconsitancy from perspective of the character that is faced with it. Guess what ends up happening if you put yourself into the show, fanfiction. Remember that the decision the character makes or the opinions he/she shares are their own, and while the viewer may disagree with them it's ultimately just them, and in the end it might be a writers intent (which ofc it isnt in this show, but that's not the point). I hope you understand how bullshit that argument was and how you shouldn't do that.
    To be fair there are a few things i could add, (like how with those scenes at the end you decided to show us the issue of reusing a single song, INSTEAD of talking about how all those scenes were basically the same, someone telling robotboy that he was right, missed opportunity there again), but i think it is long enought of a comment.
    I do hope you read this and don't take my criticism lightly, but also not drastically, after all it's all my opinion and even if I think I'm right, you do you.
    Wish you the best in future vids, imma prob come back and watch your newest videos some time later (not that anyone would care).
    Good luck.

      Scott Person +Scott Person This is by far the best Criticism I've ever received.
      In some aspects, I actually agree. I could have elaborated myself a lot better in certain situations. I mean when it comes to the show being unrealistic and Tommy being a cliché character, I still stand by those statements and I believe those are negative traits the show has, but I will say I could have explained myself a little more. I guess I was under the impression that people have context to what I'm feeling.
      Now, I do sort of disagree with you in regards to the main character, because while I don't expect Tommy to be exactly like me, there is a certain level of tolerance that needs to be put in regards to how relatable a character is. I honestly just can't feel any empathy with how unenthusiastic Tommy is when he's around Robotboy and how he takes him for granted. I probably would have been fine if the show had established that aspect of his character as a character flaw he has, but it's kind of treated as normal. But that's just me, of course. :/
      But this was a good comment. The last time someone tried to argue with me about Robotboy, it was a Robotboy fanboy, so it's nice to read something written with actual intellectual merit.

      It sucks, don't ever watch it. People said it was a funny show. They're wrong! The show has hardly any likable characters. While I'll say the concept of the show is decent, it's done poorly and in a very mean spirited way. Innocent kids are beat up by 1-dimensional bullies with no redeeming qualities or souls, yeah it's that bad. Seriously, I don't get why people gave Robotboy crap, but defended The fucking Obdongs? At least in Robotboy, the bullies were actually fucking punished, even the most despicable ones like Tommy's older brother. The Oblongs didn't even bother with it's unlikable mean spirited shitty characters. Did an animated atrocity on the episode "Buckeheads' on my DeviantART yet people are STILL lashing out at me and defending that POS show! DevinART is a terrible website, nowadays. Don't even get me started on the shitty fandoms, like the Steven Universe one.

      icecream hero I can’t see how this show is a Fairly OddParents Ripoff. OddParents is more comedy Oriented, and doesn’t have much battles nor villains. Robotboy has quite a lot of fights and quite a few villains. Also, they have a completely different Premise. Robotboy is about Trying to keep Robotboy safe from the clutches of evil, as the intro says. Fairly OddParents is just Timmy Getting fairies because of Vicky and wishing things while trying to keep them hidden from Someone like Crocker.
