Man I loved Rare Earth when I was a kid learning the drums. That guy is a killer drummer and singer...
Kenny Rankin-such a gifted artist! Really miss him. RIP ♥♥
Great to see this again after so many years! I watched The Midnight Special every time Helen Reddy was on it!
Helen Reddy's show opener "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" was written by the woman who wrote the theme to the TV series Land of the Lost, Linda Laurie.
Thanks, Midnight Special! Loved Curtis, Rare Earth, and Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Helen was a great host! 😊
she was inescapable for a few years in the 70s. great singer!
I get worn out and winded just watching Tina and the Revue dancing. Lots of energy!!
Can't watch live tonight with the party people, so I will catch this later. Loved Kenny Rankin.
Me too. What a voice!
My 1st time seeing-hearing Kenny, I like him too. A great picker/singer.
YESSSSS!!!! THE ONE I’VE BEEN WAITING SOOO LONG FOR!! FINALLY!!! I cannot WAIT for this one!!! 😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🙌🏾🫶🏾👏🏾🔥🔥I’m especially here for Helen and Ike & Tina!!!
I like Helen Reddy, what a voice, and Rare Earth, is a great episode.
I agree listening to Helen sing Time just melts my heart!
YESSSS!!!! IKE & TINA TURNER 😁😁😁💯
Helen & Tina are just tops!!! Happy Anniversary TMS!!
Ike was a rare good mood! 😊 Tina was amazing, AS ALWAYS
That's because he was banging the three dancer in the band before he went on.
it's so nice to re-live those magical Friday nights back in the 70s. Only thing missing is our Pizza Haven pizza.
Rare Earth stole the night!
They helped me to stomach. Helen Ready. Ready is a good host. Just when she opens her mouth to sing. All I hear, is her hate for men. Just host, don't sing.
Rare Earth killed it with Big John . 😮
BEST LINE-UP of astounding TALENT in a golden ERA NEVER TO BE DUPLICATED nor LOST nor FORGOTTEN! This Show IS A MUSICAL TREASURE CHEST!!! (especially RICH from THE SOUL down to THE BONE for us BABY BOOMERS!!!)
MULTI-THANKS for preserving these GEMS!!
How I would LOVE to live through The 50s 60s & 70s AGAIN!!!
Loved this song "Big John is my name" the first time Rare Earth played it. Just as fresh and good the second time round.😍👏👏👏
Thank you Midnight Special for this great episode.
Midnight Special has done it again with another great live special.
Rare Earth!!!
Kenny Rankin is a Show-Stopper here! He was one of NYC's GREATEST ARTISTS and most UNIQUE Singer Songwriter (improvisational "Jazz" Scat ) Guitarist MUSICIAN of our time! REST IN THE PEACE OF CHRIST, Kenny Rankin❤
He is great and Helen Reddy had a hit with the song he wrote "Peacefull".
@@bryannewman5194
Yes indeed!! Thank you for hipping us, Bry!
Can't wait, The Midnight Special!
Reddy's "Don't You Mess With A Woman", I think that Reba McEntire should do the remake as well as Lulu 1981 song "Who's Foolin' Who"!!
The original MTV kids, this is the best music and television in this baby-boomers opinion!
My 1st time seeing-hearing the Impressions, I liked their song “Preacher Man” so smooth, silky and soulful.
Excellent 🤗🙏🍺cheers
Just watched, and yes I could listen to Kenny Rankin all night. Hey Brotz, I'm back in one piece, just had family in for the night. See you all next week.
Originally, I came to listen and watch other musicians. However, the Kenny Rankin piece Why Do Fools Fall in Love, was was shot and recorded amazingly beautifully. The camera shot where you're watching Kenny sing, and the lead guitar player picking in the background was amazing.
Is it just me, or was music just a lot more fun back then?:)
Was sooooo much better!
Love me some Helen Reddy❗️
Helen Reddy was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. So glad that you are sharing these episodes.
I know, listening to her live version of Time on this is so GREAT!!!!
FABULOUS, BEAUTIFUL❤❤❤❤
👍🏻 live on television
more , more , more IKE & TINA TURNER
Tina Turner, wow what an artist. And it's no wonder she was able to be mega successful away from Ike. Tina Turner was the complete entertainment package
What a lineup!!
Tina Turner, do the Tina Turner!
I have a CD of Helen Reddy, every song on it is good.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh oui merci beaucoup du post
I am woman hear me roar!💪 🥰 what an anthem for women/girls…
Helen Reddy “spoke” to me as a young teen girl.
Wish Rare Earth would have done “Get Ready” song too, I love the band & enjoyed “Born to Wander” & “Big John” What a FUNKY GROOVE!! 💃 Whew!!
I’ve got a crush on sax-flute-tambourine-maracas player Gil Bridges 😍 he’s so handsome.
- Pete Hoorelbeke aka “Rivera” is a great drummer & lead singer - a rarity!
Another shirtless overalls wearing band member, keyboardist-harp player Kenny James.
Great Show tonight!!
I used to love her song Ruby red dress leave me alone
Can't wait to see
Helen Reddy died on the same day as Mac Davis. . .Big stars early 70's.
Two great singers and songwriters!
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support. It is greatly appreciated.
I've got an interesting Helen Reddy story. A drummer pal of mine, actually a fantastic session drummer, Joe Correro (played w Paul Revere & The Raiders-yes that's him drumming on Indian Reservation as well as on Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds hit 'Don't pull your Love), was playing drums for Helen Reddy in 1972. Helen's manager was her ex-husband, Jeff, who allowed Joe to drive Helen to gigs.
One evening, the powerhouse jazz/rock band 'Chase' opened up for Helen Reddy and Joe Correro was knocked out by the band and asked Bill Chase (leader of the Chase band) who their drummer was to which Chase replied, 'He's just a fill in until we find a drummer!' So, Joe jumped at the opportunity, the only problem was, he was already touring w Helen. Chase asked Joe 'how can he leave Helen and join our band?' Joe said, 'no problem!' So, the next evening, in the middle of a tour, Joe tells Jeff (Helen's husband/manager) that he's leaving Helen and joining Chase. Jeff was so furious, he chased Joe around the parking lot of the hotel they were staying in trying to beat him up. Luckily, Joe got away and drove to Chicago to join Chase.
After touring with Chase for about 6 months, Joe heads back to California and begins working with Al Jarreau.
Fast forward 5 or 6 years, it's now 1977 or early 1978 and Al Jarreau wins a Grammy. Joe told me he was at the grammies with Al and looked over a few tables and there was Helen and Jeff sitting there. Joe looked over at Helen and smiled and waved and even though over 5 years had passed, she scowled at Joe and looked the other way refusing to acknowledge him.
Can't say I'd blame her.
@@davidfifer4729 yeah lol not the most responsible thing to do-but musicians did that a lot
Hal Blaine played drums on Paul Revere & The Raiders 'Indian Reservation', not Joe Correro.
@@sg-yq8pm Interesting
She was Scorpio, forgiving but not forgetful!!!
Got myself a new surround sound. With 12 speaker hook up. Ready for this Friday night and future, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL EPISODES.
Nice!!🤩🤩
@@Royale_with_Cheeese They may have been broadcast in mono. But think, there were no stereo TVs back then. When I sit and listen to these great postings of these great, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL EPISODES. I hear ever instrument. Thats because they were recorded in stereo. I have the time life DVDs. On one of the discs, Mr. Burt Sugarman said, " These shows were recorded in stereo". When I sit and enjoy these great shows. I hear them, in STEREO. And yes, it does make a difference with the sound. Your problem might be. Your AMUSIA, I hear it in stereo.
That is awesome
@@Royale_with_Cheeese They are in stereo. Burt Sugarman, Said in an interview. That the shows were recorded in stereo. He didn't say some were. he said these shows. were recorded in stereo. in one the episodes. Wolfman Jack said "if you want to hear. future episodes in stereo. send a post card to our Burbank studio. he was asking if you want to hear it in stereo simulcast. with some radio station. that was way back in the early episodes.
Oh, HELL yes!
On a side note: I'd never thought I would see the day when a badass sound system would be appropriate for Helen Reddy!😂😂
Screw it. Rock on y'all🤘😎🤘
Why is it Ike and Tina? Tina IS the show. Excited to hear her next week too.
Because without Ike Tina would still be flippin grits . It's not enough to just be able to sing well but you have to be able to run a band and most people can't even run their life or tie their shoe. Now you think hard about that 😊
@@chriskroll4166 You can't make those assumptions. Plenty of band leaders couldn't find their back end with both hands. Tina's a smart woman. She might have figured out another way to stardom.
@@JamieAndersonMusic the only thing she ever figured out was to live after a good beating . But any girl who gets hit by a guy and does not walk away from him immediately is not too bright. She must like it.
I got a reply to my comment. Asking me if my 12 speaker surround sound. makes a difference. Yes, it does. I hear all the instruments. With surround sound, it separates the sound. I hear the instruments clear.
Loved Helen Reddy, part of my middle school soundtrack, the Impressions are always a quality act, Curtis Mayfield is always a blessing when he shows up, Rare Earth is a group I remember their name, heard 1 song, "Hold your Head up", so all this will be new to me, and Kenny Rankin might be one of those lost classics that punctuated a time in my life. They haven't a comedy in a while. Looks like another great line up! Can't wait for the Way Back Machine to fire up! 😁
Hold your head up is by Argent.
@@DannyHaralson-ol1io Your right, I was thinking of "I'm Lossing you!" senior moment, LOL 😅
Ike and Tina Turner on this episode and next episode too
100% Detroit funk from Rare Earth. Big John is the name.
Here's the thing, you guys don't come on straight from makeup, you're real.
I usually tune in for the music but Franklin Ajaye was GREAT!

Franklin Ajaye is a great comedian of the 1970's!
A good comedian? He's talking abought RAPE and INCEST, in his show. I don't know what's so funny abought that.

Kenny never had a hit record, but made it onto the first show. Had no hits in the 52 weeks after that, either, hence the low Rankin.
Great to hear Reddy sing "I Am Woman." Wonderful feminist anthem. I have a story about her. A few years ago I needed a quote for a book I was writing so I wrote to her management and asked them to verify what Reddy said when she won a Grammy and they said, yes, she said that. Here it is: " ... I would like to thank God because she makes everything possible."
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rare Earth, Good rock 'n' roll. Ike & Tina Turner, Bummer, no " Nutbush City Limits
or "Proud Mary". I'm disappointed. Still should be good with these two songs.
Ike & Tina host next week’s episode and they perform “ Proud Mary” as one of the songs!!😍🔥👏🏾
Upload Rare Earth Born to Wander on a separate video that was a better version than the album version
Someone needs to ask Burt Sugarman WHY he had Helen Reddy on as much as he did - even making her regular host for a year!
I can answer that. Helen was by far the most popular female artist in the business at this time. In a one year period, starting in late 1972, she hit #1 with "I Am Woman" & "Delta Dawn". She reached the top 5 with "Leave Me Alone". And the top 20 with "Peaceful". She would continue to churn out hits for years to come.
@@shyman99Thank you, as a woman myself I don’t understand all the dislikes she’s getting tonight.
@@KittyGrizGriz - It's very unfortunate because Helen broke a lot of barriers for women in music. Hopefully it's just because we have a lot of rock only fans here and they are not as open to appreciate really good pop music like we are.
@@shyman99I have a sad feeling that’s not the case & some of the comments are coming from people who like a patriarchy & aren’t emotionally strong. “Real” men are feminists too & embrace strong empowered women/girls; at least for any man that I’d be attracted to 😉.
I don't mind her being host. She is a good host. As long as she don't sing.
🚬😎
Helen Reddy was a bad woman with amazing range
If you want to hear someone really kill "Delta Dawn," listen to Dianne Davidson. She recorded it in the seventies, too.
Tina Turner, said in an interview." That Ike beat her bad". Back stage of the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL. She said it was because. She sang the wrong words in Proud Marry.
Guess he didn't listen to Helen Reddy sing "Don't Mess With a Woman"!
@@bryannewman5194 They didn't do Proud Mary on this show. They do "Proud Mary" on Episode 54, coming up.
Teddy insufferably smarmy as always
He's joking about "Leave it to Beaver" being old and corny - in 1974!! Holy shit!!
Tucker Carlson ads…pffft grrrr
Can Helen Reddy sing or what? She rocked the house when she sang "Don't Mess With a Woman"!!!
And, her live version of Time, she knocked out of the park!!!
@@bryannewman5194 I love that one too!

Franklin Ajaye made a joke abought RAPE AND INCEST. Go back to 41:58 and listen very close to the so call joke. RAPE AND INCEST IS NOT FUNNY.
Isn't she Canadian?
Australian
Franklin Ajaye is one of the funniest people I have ever heard. It's a shame that after only a few years into his career he left for Australia. Is wit and charm are sadly missed
Is this the episode where Helen Reddy became the permanent host? That was the beginning of the end of The midnight special for me. I can't explain why it just seemed like the show shifted its focus after that
Why did he go to Australia? Did he give up show biz? I always thought he was extremely funny but can’t find much stuff on him.
I believe Helen Reddy was made the permanent host in the summer of in March of 1975 through July of1976. She increased the ratings as Burt was trying widening the audience for increased ratings, I heard her manager was too difficult, and the producers did not like dealing with him, and she made more money going sticking to concert tours as she was a at the top of the charts at the time.
@@KevyNova I believe, and I could be wrong, that he left because he felt that Australia was a less racist place to live. I believe he still does comedy and I think he was in the country a couple of years ago. It's a shame he told some of the funniest jokes I've ever heard. And his delivery was like listening to jazz
@@bryannewman5194 yeah I thought this was a little early, but it's been so long I don't really remember. I just never thought the show was the same after that. And people certainly continue to watch it I know I tuned in from time to time but it had to be somebody I really wanted to see. It stopped being must see TV. Of course to be fair that would have also been about the time I got a driver's license and a girlfriend
He said that Bud raped his mom and sister Kathy. KATHY is only 6 years old .go back and listen closely. I don't see anything funny abought RAPE AND INCEST.
Franklin Ajaye had me laughing a lot. I also saw him in the movie Car Wash. It was a good movie with a excellent music soundtrack.
I don't so funny abought RAPE. And talking abought Bud, raping his mother and sister Kathy. Thats incest, Kathy is 6 years old.
If you think RAPE AND INCEST is funny. I DON'T.
I don't know what is so funny abought RAPE AND INCEST. Thats what his so-called joke is abought, Bud RAPEING his mom and sister. Bud's sister Kathy is only 6 years old in the show. So, it's not only RAPE AND INCEST. It also underage RAPE. So, I don't know what so funny abought that.
If you like jokes abought ... RAPE AND INCEST. Listin @ 41:58 if you don't believe me.
41:58 bad joke abought RAPE AND INCEST, ARE NOT FUNNY!
