    The reason people love that sound of Swiss bones without shields is because their bearings are as dry as a nuns crotch. They will get noisier and without lubricant on the races, they’re at a higher risk of blowing out (bearings manufacturers engineer bearings to take into account the thickness and viscosity of lubricant as a tolerance in their bearing) Not that skate bearings are rotating at 1000’s of rpm but like Ben said, keep the shields on and I recommend that you use the spacers too. Spacers not only ensure that the bearings sit true inside the wheel, they also minimise dirt travelling along the surface of the axle and into the backs of your bearings. On my cruiser board I’ve had the same set of Swiss bones for over 20 years. I maintain maybe once a year. They still spin like no other bearing I’ve ever had. Highly recommend spending more money and getting Swiss bones.

  • @nervousbreakdown1108
    @nervousbreakdown1108 Před rokem +1

    it's not that the dirt simply goes in and out of the bearing if you take the sheilds off. the dirt gets in and scores or wears away at the races and bearings meaning that the tolerance is shot and your bearings go from an abec 7 to abec negative 10.

  • @hoodedcobra1531

    Shieldless way to go… makes em louder and either way dirt gets inside shields on and off but dirt also will come out with the shields off. I’ve had the same Swiss bearings for ten years and popped the shields off the first day. They still roll like new… shieldless is the way to go

    • @Synathidy
      @Synathidy Před 3 lety +3

      That's really dumb. Your bearings were designed with shields for a reason. Do you think you know better than the engineers who designed them? Dirt gets IN if you remove the shields! They're called 'shelds" because they shield your bearings. From dirt. A hell of a lot less dirt will get inside with shields in place than with the damn things fully exposed. It's pretty obvious. Just what do you hope to gain by stripping away a part your bearings were designed with? What is the purpose in doing so? Because it certainly isn't going to help your bearing performance or longevity. It'll help bearings companies though. Because you'll end up wearing out and needing to replace them often.

      @@Synathidy taking the shields off makes it ten times easier to do a thorough job cleaning and lubing your bearings.
      The shields are there to turn the bearings into basically maintenance-free disposables. They keep the lube in and the dirt out long enough for the bearings to give you a couple years without any maintenance at all. If you regularly lube and clean your bearings, it doesn't matter whether you put the shields back on or leave them off.

    There is absolutely no Comparison between the different between shields on or off. Clean bearings with the right oil. Even if they are new they will not spin as fast ride longer last longer than bearing that you take care of so if you are lazy and don't want to have the best. Then don't if you are grinding just spray them out and relube. I am a old alot car racer and oiling the motor and bearing could make you win or lose a race I have a set of SKS German bearings from 1976 that spin better than reds. still to this day. The tradeoff you're making here is longer life for higher lubing frequency. Taking off the shields allows you to regularly clean and lube your bearings instead of just running them into the ground and then buying a new set. The downside is that you have to lube and clean every couple weeks as opposed to basically never having to lube and clean for shielded bearings.

      @@tissuepaper9962 But whole, if yo uclean them like every 3 months, they will then last many moons instead of every few weeks! Kids these days are lazyasses!

      @@tigerbalm666 I've never been able to clean a shielded bearing without destroying the shield, so I just go shieldless. I live in a wet, muddy environment so regular cleaning is a must anyway, I don't mind cleaning and lubing every once in awhile, it's relaxing.

    Look... If things like Bearing covers and washers and spacers didn't work, they would not include them...
