Used to have all sorts of issues with bearings always breaking. About fifteen years ago I started taking them off and have never had to buy a new set unless I lose my board
The reason people love that sound of Swiss bones without shields is because their bearings are as dry as a nuns crotch. They will get noisier and without lubricant on the races, they’re at a higher risk of blowing out (bearings manufacturers engineer bearings to take into account the thickness and viscosity of lubricant as a tolerance in their bearing) Not that skate bearings are rotating at 1000’s of rpm but like Ben said, keep the shields on and I recommend that you use the spacers too. Spacers not only ensure that the bearings sit true inside the wheel, they also minimise dirt travelling along the surface of the axle and into the backs of your bearings. On my cruiser board I’ve had the same set of Swiss bones for over 20 years. I maintain maybe once a year. They still spin like no other bearing I’ve ever had. Highly recommend spending more money and getting Swiss bones.
I should some day. I wouldn't spend the extra money on them personally. I think the regular swiss bones are great and if I'm feeling thrifty the china reds are good enough for a couple months at least.
