Congrats on your 3.10 finish time. I could only dream of running 🏃 this fast. Your video is super helpful as I just signed up for the 2024 Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October, having ran London in April and San Francisco this July.
Well done on your two recent marathons, especially SF last week! How is your recovery going?
I think you'll really like the TWM! I thought it was excellent!
@@its_Matt_B_ So far so good. I am truly looking forward to TWM. Hope all goes well from now + all the way through the finish line and beyond. Cheers!
Thank you so much for your positive inspiration 🏃♂️! Denmark ➡️ New York in exactly 1 week, and then... the New York City Marathon 2023 in 11 days 😉. Love your videos - please keep up. Cheers
Thank YOU so much for your positive and motivating comment! Good luck in NYC! Be sure to check in after the race and let me know how you get on! 👊🏽
Had a goal of 3:10 at Chicago this year (which also happens to be my target qualifying time for that race). Ran 3:10:07, which is a 9 minute PB, but I sure wish I could've found 8 seconds out there somewhere. 🤷♂ Going to look into the Toronto Marathon after watching this series.
Congrats on your solid race at Chicago and especially on the huge PB!! Yeah, 8 seconds faster would have sounded better (you'd be a 3:09 marathoner), but you've still got to be thrilled with the result! 👊🏽
I would totally run the toronto waterfront marathon. Kudos on the race. excellent time. casual bq :P
It's definitely worth a trip to run it! LOL at casual BQ!!
Congrats
Thanks, Jay!
You may know this, but in Stryd Power Center, you can click and drag over a section of the graph and it will give you the averages for just that section. Would have been interesting to know your power average before you started to drift down toward the end. That is, how close were you able to hold the recommended 322 before then. BTW, I'm reviewing your previous videos for nuggets of race prediction as I approach NYC. Although I did run (the better part of) a marathon in August -- and performed great until I didn't -- I'm not sure it's a useful indication of my race readiness, especially with the 100k in between. So I'm kind of in the same boat as your earlier video about predicting without a recent race. Interestingly, Stryd pretty much nailed your Toronto outcome.
To quote the A-team’s Hannibal Smith, ‘I love it when a plan comes together’! Congrats again on a great race!
Nice, but "I pity the fool" who quotes the A-Team! 🤣
@@its_Matt_B_ well played Sir, very well played!
🇨🇦 💫 awesome that everything came together for you Matt !!!
It was a good day for me! It doesn't happen often, but if it did, it wouldn't be as special when it does!
I've run both Toronto events, and I also use a well-calibrated Stryd. I don't trust the spring Toronto event. The kms were not equal and the course ran long. The fall event kms were perfectly equal and consistent. More importantly, there is a bigger/better vibe to the fall race, with more participants and onlookers. The only advantage to the spring race is the net downhill.
It's good to hear the specific issues about the Spring race. I'm sure it'll get better over the years as I've heard a lot of people complain about it, although they all seem to be very general complaints.
I ran the half at the same race, was also in the same coral as you. ran a 1:18:10 chip time at 3.41 per km.. was really happy with my effort too. my strava / Coros gave me a 1:17:38 so I could have probably ran a more optimal route as I ran an extra 150 meters or so. all things considered it was a wonderful race.
Big congrats on a great race and a blazing time! Remember our watches aren't absolutely precise and I think a difference of 150 meters over 21km is pretty good!
@@its_Matt_B_ also ran in vaporfly 3s and loved them! Congrats on a wonderful race!
@@thebullfighter6733 No one is surprised that we like and ran well in the VF3! 🤣
What a fantastic race!! Congrats again! And it doesn't surprise me that you had a better race than in Boston, what a miserable day that was! 🌧 🥶
Thanks, Kelly! Yeah, Boston did have miserable weather this year (especially for the spectators). It's really no surprise this race went better for me! 🤣
Congratulations again! Hard work pays off!
Every time! Thanks! 😀
Love nerding out on that data.. I also pick the best data source to make myself feel good about my effort and future potential. I still draw motivation from my 4 minute miles among the skyscrapers in the Chicago Marathon when GPS was wonkng out. Speaking of downhill Marathons I have my eye on that Mesa Marathon in Feb. Now, if I can just find a marathon with a 25mph tailwind and point to point, I will be golden!
I have local friends that ran Mesa a few years ago and they really liked it! Be sure to let me know when you find that down hill race with the 25mph tail wind. I’ve got a feeling it will sell out pretty quick! 🤣
I ran the marathon distance here 4 times (not a hilly course, it’s mostly flat)- like you said, the longest hill is at the beginning but it’s very gradual. Race conditions were excellent! For myself, I got a big pb, under 2:40 - and big comeback after injury and rough Boston2023. I may be wrong but this is the first year in a while that I noticed that the race sold out, and sold out a number of weeks before the race. I’m glad this race is getting noticed! Only annoying parts are 2-3 tight hairpin turns. And this year because of the construction near the starting line, there was a more congested start consisting of the weird lane left to right lane change. But otherwise organization and support and course are quite good. Highly recommend it.
I’ve ran the spring half marathon a number of times and I mostly like the course… some of the issues with the past full spring marathon were the tight course pathways, sharing the course with pedestrians in the late stages of the race, course not as clearly marked (but not the absolute worse), poor organization of distributing food after the race (some runners got lots, others got none). I’m pretty sure it’s BQ certified.
Another race in the GTA that can be highly recommended is the 30k around the Bay. I’m running it for the first Time this year but I heard you’ve got to do it as some point. It’s older than Boston!
Matt, Good to hear that you ran your race well!! That is always fulfilling
Hey Matt! Big congrats on that blazing PB! Nicely done, mate!
I was on the shakeout run for this race and a guy I was running with said it’s the first year they’ve sold out so far in advance. I suppose it’s only going to become more popular and before we know it we’ll have to sell a kidney to get in.
I just looked up the Around the Bay race! It looks good and it’s got some serious history behind it!
Ugh! So many races so little time! 😁
Great run Matt. Nice dive into the data!
Cheers, Charl! 👊🏽
Excellent effort Matt, congrats!
Thanks, Tyler! 👊🏽
Great video and post race analysis Matt !!
Cheers, mate! ✌🏽
Nice job. Running 7ish min miles. That's awesome. Are you planning on any more races anytime soon?
Thanks, Jay! There is a half marathon i'm thinking about on November 11th. I want to run another marathon before Boston, but I don't know which one yet!
@@its_Matt_B_ If you want to reach out to Texas, you might want to consider Houston Marathon in January 14. This year I am doing half in Houston and opt for The Woodlands Marathon (another TWM). TWM claims to be a fast marathon qualifying 10% of participants to Boston. It is on March 2nd. I hear Cowtown Marathon (Fort Worth) on Feb 25 is also a well organized event.
Great running matt
Cheers, Brandon! 🙌🏽
Also the Toronto Marathon is in May and runs much of the same course . I don’t think it’s a Boston qualifier (could be wrong) and it’s run by a different organization. Since TCS has taken over the waterfront marathon from Scotiabank it has now become a bucket list race in Canada 🇨🇦
Your pace time per mile is my pace per km in a long run.. 😂
🤣So we're the same (as long as we use different units of measurement)!
I wasnted to mention this in the recap, but I forgot. I much preferred having km markers than mile markers! It seemed to make the race distance easier to think about while running!
Hi Matt, well done in your race. Hope you run it again next year I may go for #3 as it’s one of the best races around. You should also look at the Buffalo to Niagara Falls Canada marathon which ch runs the week before
Cheers, Gord! I have been looking at races around the same time next year! I looked up the Buffalo/Niagra falls race and got confused because this year it was an out and back from Niagra Falls. It looks like a stunning race!
The spring Toronto Marathon was such a disappointment to run especially as it is an official Boston qualifier. I ran it last year and on top off the lack of porta-potties and all the disorganization with medals and refreshments at the finish line, the most worrying part was that some of the roads crossing the route in the downtown section were not closed, which led to some runners almost getting hit by cars which I saw, or cops having to stop runners to let cars pass. Both of these are obviously major red flags for anyone running a road race. So yes the waterfront marathon is much better as it has actual world class level organization in comparison.
Oh wow! I had no idea the spring race was that bad! That is almost comical for everyone but the runners! What a mess!
I think any marathon could benefit from a "you are here" style map of the marathon gathering area (scattered throughout) that shows clearly where the porta-johns are located. Also, I ran Berlin this year and they had outdoor urinals for the guys which I thought was a fantastic idea as it relieves the queue for the actual porta-johns. It was kind of awkward as it was out in the open but you still had your back towards everyone and since it was all guys in that area nobody cared.
Funny story: At the Berlin Marathon, I saw a guy and a woman just walking/talking and they wandered into the outdoor urinal area. Then the guy stopped walking and continued the conversation with her in the middle of guys peeing around them. The woman looked so confused and uncomfortable🤣 I think he was so into the conversation that he didn't know where he was. lol
I'm with you on the potty maps throughout the start area! Boston also has the urinals set up! Why has it taken so long to implement such a simple idea? 😆
Houston has also porta-urinals. The waiting area is convention center, so both porta potties and porta urinals are within convention center (indoors). There are many of them.
@@TolunayOrkun Porta potties inside?!? This sounds fantastic on a cold morning, but also ...eww! I imagine the smell not being the greatest!
@@TolunayOrkunseems like its more common than I thought. The only two points of reference for me was Chicago and Berlin. Chicago doesn't utilize them (yet) and Berlin was where I first saw it. I made a suggestion to the Chicago Marathon organizers in their survey they send out asking for ways to improve the runners experience but I don't know if they will actually take the time to read it.
@@its_Matt_B_ I think there are outdoor ones close to the corrals as well. But the indoor ones had no smell issues as far as I remember. The area is well air conditioned. It is very high ceiling area (basically like a warehouse floor). In a few hours they are in use they don't pose a major issue. The race being in January helps as well.
The toronto marathon runs by the waterfront and the course is very tight on some segments of the course. The organizers did have issues with distance of the course that upset a few runners. I was scheduled to run TWM in 2021 but organizers took it down to 10k and barred non Canadians from the event. May come back for 2024 depending on Berlin lottery
In 2021 they were still dealing with COVID and the sponsor was Scotiabank. The organization is 10x better now TCS has taken over. The course got a little narrow in one place, but it wasn't near the water. I didn't experience any trouble, and I doubt many people did because it was after the half marathon had finished so there were far fewer people running.
Definitely do this race!
I ran the Toronto Marathon (Half distance) . The main feature of this race is being able to ran down Yonge Street which is Toronto's equivalent to NYC's Broadway. The advantage to this race is that Yonge Street is mostly downhill ( I would say about 20k(?) ) so it can be quite fast. I've run this race in the past and it was fine but this year it was a mess . I think there was a lack of volunteers making the the finish line a mad house. There was no one to hand out medals so some took it on themselves to rip open the boxes and pass them around. My friend got a marathon medal when they only ran a half. Needless to say the organizers sent out an apology email with a promise to fix the problems and I believe they will . I've all ready signed up for next year. There are a lot of great races in Canada. Two of my favourites are The Ottawa race weekend and Quebec City. In Ottawa the entire downtown turns into race central and in Quebec City you run through the old town which dates back to the 1600's. It's an extremely hilly course with lots of cobble stones.
Ahh! Sorry to hear it was a mess when you finished! I guess they got everything straightened out by the time I got to the finish line! I didn't run into any issues!
Thanks for the recommendations! I was already thinking of the Ottawa marathon. Now I am even more!
I'm hoping ididn't get the races mixed up. I thought you did the Toronto Waterfrond Marathon. I was talking about he Toronto Marathon which takes place in May. When I run Ottawa I always do these challenges that includes a 5k, 10k on the Saturday and the full or half on the Sunday.
@@johnellis2992 Ahh! No, it was me that got the races mixed up! Good on ya for doing the multi-race challanges! That's some serious stuff!
Toronto Spring Marathon is point-to-point race so you have to deal with shuttles. Also, it is lacking a major sponsor and it shows. Just Google the news about the complaints from spring 2023 race. Complaints about distances being incorrect, cars on the course, water shortages, and running out of medals. It was a bit of a fiasco. Stick with the much better organized Fall Waterfront race.
Thanks for saving me some money! Now I don't have to make the trip to see the race myself! 🤣
Matt, what did your training consist of? Did you follow a specific plan? I ended up using one of the Garmin HR based programs. I liked not having to worry about pace or distance, just staying in the zone. I completed a 15 week program, but I had a good base going into the program.
I loosely followed the “advanced” Hansons Marathon method. It’s a little intense, but I like the structure and I like that the tempo runs are done at marathon race pace.
Hi Matt, great video, as always. Thanks for sharing your experience and all of the details! Very interesting. I have a question for you. I would love to run a fall marathon like Toronto, but I live in Boca Raton (South Florida) and can't imagine training for one during the hottest time of the year (July, Aug, Sept). I tend to get quite a bit of cardiac creep when running long runs in the heat, so I know my effort would be way too high even during easy long runs, which would force me to cut my pace back significantly. If I did that, I would feel like I would have no idea if I'd be able to hit a goal pace. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!
I had the same feelings about training through the summer. I ran slow most of the time and when I did my workouts I would either adjust my pace based on the heat/humidity or hit my paces and ignore my HR at the time. For this marathon I used the Hanson's marathon method and they say the tempo run is to be run at goal marathon pace. There were certainly times when holding that pace was tricky because of the heat, but I just figured it would be easier when the temps dropped. Guess what? It was!
Thanks, @@its_Matt_B_! Interesting to hear how tempo pace is equal to the marathon pace in that method. That would certainly help. I'll have to check that out. I've been trying to build a halfway decent base late this past summer in preparation for training for the Celebration Marathon, so I've been running my long runs outside until my HR would reach the mid-140s, then I'd hop into the gym and finish off on the treadmill, where I had no problem with cardiac creep indoors. We had our first cool day early last week (as you likely know) and I was pretty surprised how that base build-up was working because my easy pace dropped from like 10:20 to like 9:45 with the same HR and all outdoors, just cooler temps! Take care, Matt!
@@BookemDanole Have you run Celebration before? I’ve done it twice! It’s a great race!
@@its_Matt_B_ I have not. This will be only my second marathon. Miami in 2022 (70 degrees and 100% humidity at start). I won a free entry into Miami for (Jan) 2024 and also registered for Celebration. Might sound crazy, but I'll run Miami if it somehow happens to be in the 50s at start. Nothing beats that course with the views and great entertainment. But I really want to run a sub 3:45 (sub 3:40 A goal) and I need the temps to be in my favor. So if Miami is too warm, I'll be running Celebration. Looks like a nice course too. They are both on the same day. Thanks again!
Did you prefer the alpha flys over the endorphin elites?
I've never run in a pair of Alphaflys! I wore the Vaporflys for this race. It's difficult to say if I prefer them. I certainly like how they feel better (I like a softer ride), but I tend to think the Elites may be a little faster. This is just my opinion and not based on data. I have run faster in the VFs then the EEs, but as you know, all races are not equal.
Just for curiosity, what was the predictions from stryd and metathon? I have a marathon in 2 weeks and stryd and metathon are 03:13 but runalyze give me 03:09
I went over my predicted times in this video: czcams.com/video/5S_mVgQJlKM/video.html
I don't remember exactly what they were, but they were all quite close.
What time are you going for in your race? The fact that Runalyze and Metathon are so close is a good sign of your fitness. Metathon tends to predict a little slower (in my experience).
@@its_Matt_B_ I remember on your video stryd give you 03:10 and metathon 03:14. I'm tented to go for A goal like you 03:09:59 B goal 03:14:59 and C is finish 😂
That sounds like a good goal to me,@@tiago6197 ! Go for it!! Which race are you running?
@@its_Matt_B_ I will do the Porto marathon in Portugal,in the same day of new York marathon. Is a great course with a beautiful view.
@@tiago6197 I just looked up the course map! It looks like a stunning race with water views most of the time! Wow!
