    All student horns wear out within a few months. That’s largely why they are cheaper than say... a $7,000+ Selmer Supreme that I am saving up for (spoiler?); to allow you to play an affordable saxophone long enough to decide if you want to get serious and upgrade to a more expensive + durable model.
    I was notified recently that if you break your Jean Paul, Jean Paul is the only company that can replace the parts and fix it. A few repairmen have been cranky at me that I failed to realize this sooner (sorry!).
    However, I was also notified by many people that Jean Paul’s customer service is great and they deliver very fast. I’ve had multiple horns in the past break on me and I sent it to a local repair shop, waited WEEKS, yet it still never came back complete. There was always a new issue. So the odds are in your favor if you’re able to send your sax to the actual company that made your horn, so you can get it back like brand new.
    Just some things to keep in mind if you think about buying this horn!

      I'm a full time woodwind tech and have repaired quite a few of these. All horns are the same, it's no different than working on vintage horns with no parts availability, If I can't order the part, I fabricate it. The repairs often times become more costly but the end result is always the same, the horn leaves the shop in working order.

      The other thing I noticed about the John Paul is the key action seems very clinky and loud. The sound I think is very good for a student horn, but as you said, it would wear out in a couple of months and technique wise, a pro horn will have better, closer, and less audible key action than the John-Paul.

      There's nothing supreme enough to spend 7K on any horn, especially a Selmer. If I was in the market for a new alto I would get a Ishimori, at $3700 it's the best value for your money hands down.

    I am a returning player and recently purchased a silver Jean Paul. I had to have a silver one, they are so pretty! The first one I received had some problems (neck was too loose and was leaking air, among some other smaller issues). Jean Paul's customer service is excellent and I was able to get a replacement, which just arrived on Friday. I can tell that the neck fits well this time and i'll have it checked out by a local repair guy , but so far so good. It is beautiful and fun to play! The accessories I got are a little different than yours. In addition to the things you got, I also received a Rico 2.5 reed, a Rico H ligature, a cleaning swab, and the mouthpiece I got was labeled as AS-4 Optima. Anyway, even though the first one I received had some problems, I would still recommend getting one because of their great customer service. Tim was responsive and helped me through every step of the way. I had to wait a few weeks for the replacement because they were out of stock of the silver saxes. I feel like they are going to sell out again quickly now that you've made this video. :) I also ordered a Better Sax, so when I receive it..I'll have to make a video for the ultimate showdown between the Jean Paul and Better Sax.

      So what's the verdict with Better Sax?

    • @sisface23
      @sisface23 Před 2 lety +2

      @@1kitts well, I ended up returning it, but I'm not saying it was a bad saxophone and I would still recommend giving it a try. I liked how fast the action felt on it and I liked the ergonomics on it better than the Jean Paul. but aesthetically I liked the Jean Paul better because I love the silver plate. I had some problems with gurgling in low notes but I think the mouthpiece may have had a lot to do with it. I believe they upgraded the mouthpiece that comes with the Better Saxes now, so i think that will help. My local tech also found some air leaks, but those can be fixed with some simple adjustments. At the time, I was trying out a bunch of saxophones and ended up getting a Yani AWO1 for my birthday. I didn't need 3 altos, so I decided to return the Better Sax while I was still in the 30-day return window (the return was easy too). Unfortunately, I ended up in a time crunch and wasn't able to make the comparison video as I had planned. I hope this quick overview helps!

      @@sisface23 Aaaawwwww you're sweet. Thanks much for taking the time out to do that quick summary. Appreciate much. I have been considering the Better Sax or the Jean Paul... and yes, I guess you've guessed why-- they both have a sweet spot in terms of price. I guess my biggest problem would be my location. I'm in the Caribbean, and so testing before buying would be impossible since I'll have to order from online.
      Surprisingly, the last time I checked, I haven't seen any reviews on Better Sax saxophone except from Better Sax channel.
      I'm supposing that you kept the Jean Paul and liking it.

    Thank you for an unbiased view of another good solid instrument that is so well suited for a beginning (or possibly intermediate) student. If this horn really does have the construction quality and durability to provide a reliable instrument for a few years, then it seems more probable that it will provide a beginning student with a good platform for learning the basics and developing good skills and technique for the later years if and when he or she may decide that they really want to advance their skills and experience in music. It hasn't been that many years ago that the purchasing of a cheap Chinese-manufactured instrument provided far more frustration for a beginning student than renting a good quality (albeit more expensive) instrument. I wish such a comparable instrument/price point had been available 60 years ago, when I began playing tenor sax in the 7th grade.

      @channingshows6634 Před 2 lety

      @@ws8080 which is why I didn’t really bring up the beginner horn too much and really emphasized the intermediate as an intermediate. The only real reason I brought the beginner/intermediate part was to establish a non professional horn. There’s always this conception in saxophone land that you have to drop all this money for a professional horn straight from a beginner, and depending on the person that might not always be the play. So having an intermediate horn worked on by one of the most reknowned saxophone repair technicians in the world for significantly cheaper than any professional model isn’t talked about enough. So that’s why I bring up an intermediate horn in the comment section of a beginner horn

    Thank you so much for this video. I played clarinet in school so fellow woodwind here. My son (he's 11 years old) wants to play tenor saxophone. I wonder if jean Paul makes a beginner Tenor or if beginners should avoid tenor until they have experience with Alto sax? from my experience, I had a nice clarinet that gave a good sound and that made it more fun to play. I'd try to play my friends' clarinets and some of them were really difficult for me! I will add that I have had asthma all my life so that was a factor in my playing abilities. Can't imagine I would have stuck with music very long if my mom didn't invest in that awesome Buffet clarinet. All to say, I wanted to find a good starter instrument for my son so he too would have a good experience starting out. This was a very helpful video thanks so much!

    I bought a Jean Paul Tenor very very disappointing, I play a Yanagisawa Elite alto and bought the tenor to see if I would like the sound, my plan was to donate to a school after testing but it wouldn't even play when it arrived, long story short sent it back to Florida for free repair and within a month it's leaking again and shops close by won't work on them! So much for giving this horn to a student because they wouldn't know it was the horn and not them and keep struggling along!
    Maybe them altos are better but personally I'd go with a better sax alto if I needed an alto

    Hey, new subscriber and retired band director. What is your warmup when comparing your beginner horns? I’d love to see it and use it. If it’s in your sax method book, let me know. Thanks! Keep up the content!

    On the Jean Paul, was I hearing the pads slapping when they were closed? I do not think I heard that with the other horns. Is it because it is new?

    I was very curious about this horn. I play the trumpet, but one day I wish to pick up the saxophone. Either Alto or Soprano first. Needless to say, Jean-Paul has a definite new future customer. I've heard their trumpets are good too.
