- Nossa Senhora da Graça Fort or Lippe Fort It is a jewel of military architecture, rising upon the north hill of the city. This fort was built in the 18th century, in order to complete the defence line of Elvas fortified square. Located in a high spot, this fort was occupied by Spanish artillery during Linhas de Elvas battle in 659. It has four bastions, four ravelins and several gaps, so that its canons could beat the enemies as they approached.
Graça Fort is constituted by three defensive lines, including in its interior several dependencies such as barracks, chapel, bunkers, the governor house, a big cistern, cannons, among many others.
Important part of the Elvas defensive strategy, a town that since early times has been an important strategically defensive point, the Graça Fort was built in the place where before was located the ancient Santa Maria da Graça Chapel. The Fort is classified as
National Heritage since 1910, yet it is not presently opened to the public.

Elvas became known as "the key to the kingdom" because of these fortifications they defeated Spanish and French armies in great battles.
these had water lots of it you cant deny it and from where these are on a hill they spread the water out also

Most impressive, I count seven layers of defense: covered way, bonnet and counterguards, ravelin, hornwork, another ravelin, the enceinte and the keep. But I'm very curious; what are the odd two story buildings atop the bastions? They must have been built after the fort was obsolete but I wonder what their purpose was? Was the fort ever used as a prison?
Tom Brennan Yes, it was used as a prison after Iberian War when became obsolete.
This fort from the time before was built to withstand sound weaponry...... of course you'll never see any of the original battlements... they're well hidden. The rest of the stuff is from after the invasion of the black horde..... I am just glad it has survived from that time before.... it actually is the whole mountain not just the top...... and is way, way older than you're told... Any "restoration" will involve sealing off all the bits that don't fit the narrative you're being fed...... shame most will never know.
Grande monumento do nosso património, que sem dúvida deve ser preservado... Sem ao mesmo tempo esquecer que durante muitos anos foi o Depósito Disciplinar (ou seja, o presídio militar) da Região Militar Sul... Dele tenho algumas memórias, umas boas e outras más, pois nele estive internado 5 meses, numas férias forçadas na sequência do golpe contra-revolucionário de 25 de Novembro de 1975.

How to defeat a star fort like that, shut the ONLY supply road somewhere below outside of their range and let them starve inside. These must have had a different use or purpose.
