Ace's death itself wasn't what made me sad (though it was still really, really sad), it was seeing Luffy completely destroyed inside and out. My poor boy had the biggest smile on his face when he set him free from the seaprism cuffs. I can't bear to see my Joy Boy lose all his joy.
It is more than just Ace's death that breaks Luffy. In the span of about a week, Luffy has lost everyone that matters to him and sacrificed so much to do so. The Strawhats were scattered across the sea, lost 10 years of his life recovering from Megallan's poison, Bon Clay was captured ensuring Luffy's escape from Impel Down, had to beat up his own grandfather (who while still serving the marines and not stopping Ace's execution, Luffy still loves him), and finally after trials and tribulations Ace dies saving Luffy, with the latter recieving a scar that will remind him of the event forever. Luffy isn't just crying because Ace died, but rather breaking down after losing everything in his life and being shown how powerless he truly was to save his loved ones.
That! When I told my friend this exact same thing they called me a lunatic for not being devastated over his death. Don't get me wrong it was sad, but Luffy and Whitebeard where just as much if not more to me

@@rishabhanand4973Of course he couldn't, it's not just that it wasn't in his nature cause his biological father never ran away from a battle, it's also that his role model and adoptive father never ran away from a battle either and thus beared no scar on his back, as such Ace never learned the lesson that other people taught Luffy: There are fights that are simply not worth getting into, either cause the opponent isn't worthy of your attention, like Shanks taught Luffy in his childhood, or cause getting into that fight would put your loved ones in unneeded danger, as Vivi taught Luffy in Drum Island.
Oh and also Luffy got a pretty big reminder of that lesson in Sabaody.
Yeah my heart was breaking for Luffy. I wasn’t really attached to Ace when he passed but the more we saw him having a bigger interaction with others. I grew to liking Ace as a character more

I almost feel like, in a weird way, when Ace says "thank you for loving me", its like Oda was talking directly to the audience. Like he was thanking the readers for loving this character, for telling them that as long as we continued to love him like luffy, he never will really die. I feel OP fans metanarratively keep Ace's flame burning with our endless love and rememberance for him. Ace, for the little time we shared with him in our journey, left a lasting impact that will forever shape the generation that grew up reading/watching this series, and generations to come - just like he does for the people in One Piece as well. He was taken too soon from Luffy's story, so soon that we barely knew him until after his death, but we still feel him. We still love him. We still write fanfics about him, draw him, make video essays, buy plushies and pins and figures and you can still find at least 2 or 3 of him alive and well in a diehard fans' cosplay at every anime con.
"Do you...want me to be alive?" If you ask One Piece fans, the answer is as obvious as it was for Luffy:
"Of course!"

The only thing that made me cry harder than Ace’s death was Yamato’s reaction to his vivre card burning away. Yamato’s absolute despair and powerlessness in that moment just completely reopened that wound for me. It really drove home how much darker the world of One Piece felt when Ace died. Not just for Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates, but for people in islands as remote and isolated as Wano.

Ace touched the lives of so many people and I love that we got to see more of that on Wano with Yamato and Otama
What reopened the wound for me was Luffy telling Otama that ace died. And we got that right after seeing Ace's brotherly side again through Otama. Otama's reaction was so sad, I just wanted to hug her like how I wanted to hug and comfort Luffy during Marineford

Ace telling Luffy that he hates crybabies hits hard, not just because of its effect on Luffy and how he copes with sadness, but we see that Ace has a habit of bottling up emotions until he breaks. He cried by himself when Sabo "died" before comforting Luffy and tries not to cry when learning that Whitebeard considers the crew his sons.
He wants to be seen as the strong one, but when he's captured and realizes there are people who love him and are willing to die for him, he can't help but release all his emotions.

I absolutely loved Garps interaction with Ace, at both Marineford and Impel Down.
When I first read Garps response of only time will tell if Ace should've been born, I thought it was a very cold answer to a very deep question.
Took me to reach my adulthood to realize that Garp was basically telling Ace to live so he can find out for himself, he was giving Ace a purpose to live.
If a ten year old is already being crushed by the world that much, it's hard to find a truthful answer. Had Garp had it in him to say 'no' then Ace would question why the hell the world was so cruel. Of course, had they said 'Maybe you can find happiness if you live long enough' there wouldn't be as much room for misinterpretation.
Garp has to be asking themselves if it would have been better for Ace to have died. To not have to hide from the WG. To not be 'responsible' for his mothers death. To not be hated for his birth.

Maybe that's defference in translation but that's literally what Garp told him. "You will understand as you live". There was not a single hintof callousness or about attoning for Roger's deeds to me.
That's why I didn't kinda understand Mel's point about it. But I guess it's pretty poppular translation.

The biggest tragedy truly is that Ace would have LOVED his dad. Pure pain 😭 I wonder what Whitebeard's thoughts were when he heard the truth. They were friends once and he had taken in his son unknowingly. He got to know Ace as his son and Roger didn't. Oda needs to stop CUTTING ONIONS.
It always made me sad that when Ace ever mentioned his dad he always had such vitriol and hatred for him. Roger would have been a great dad but Ace despised him just because he didn't understand why he was born and thought his dad didn't love him or his mom. It was always tragic seeing him act like that because Roger genuinely did love his son even if he never really met him, if I'm not mistaken it was stated somewhere that his cutlass that you see in the Wano flashback is named Ace too?

Caused a whole controversy surrounding TR cosplayers, if they could/should place a manji in their cosplays

I never cried harder at an anime, movie, or show than i did for Ace. And seeing Luffy just break down in front of Jimbei afterward on the Amazon island pretty much killed me to see.
A moment of Ace i will always remember is when he was told Luffy was trapped in the prison. He's in handcuffs and outnumbered but he immediately goes big brother protective mode and tries to fight his way back down.
It's even more beautiful when you pay attention to him before and after that, no matter where he never tried to fight away from the Marines, the only time being knowing about his brother - in his mind he doesn't deserve to live, but Luffy? He'll gladly go to Hell and back if it means his brother is safe
Ace storyline and Law/ Corazon one are easily my favorites.
There's something very beautiful that look so calm, serious (Like Law/Corazon) or Goofy like Ace deep down they just were searching for love.
And it breaks me how the last words Corazon and Ace pretty much said was I love you
I second this. To this day, Ace's death was never topped by any other emotional moment in One Piece, I ugly cried like I lost my own brother. Ugly ugly cried, soundly and messy. Never cried like this for another anime either.

Luffy looks up at him and calls him his older brother, subconsciously we also see HIM as our brother. Oda is great at writing the sequence of their plotline and how it's arranged. When he dies, he's not a 'character' who died. To us, he's _Luffy's_ brother, our MC's brother, to the extend of OUR own brother. Before Oda lets us know Ace in the flashback, he lets us get attached to Ace via Luffy's feelings for Ace. So rather than seeing Ace as a "character" or "friend", we see him as "Luffy's brother" and "a brother." The pain doubles that way.
Damn. Robin, Sanji, and Ace are such good illustrations of the damage that telling a child they are inherently worthless/"born wrong" can do! For one thing, even though all of them do pretty well at finding people who genuinely care about them (at least by the point we really get to know them)...it is clear that they really struggle to believe it. And they all have certain defense mechanisms born out of that trauma that might even look cool at first glance (eg Robins rather detached, mysterious manner) but which are really sad once you know WHY they do that thing!
Other characters also go through trauma, but the ones who hit it later or for whom it wasn't connected to WORTH - Brook, for example, or Nami - don't seem to have that same difficulty in believing that people could love them AT ALL, let alone enough to risk their lives for them. (Although, I guess, Sanji and Nami have both seen people be willing to be hurt on their behalf by the time we meet them, and their pushing-Luffy-away moments come from some level of understanding that he WOULD do that!)
That's a good point I hadn't linked together. I did notice Robin's detachment at first but I didn't connect that with her trauma until I saw someone else mention that she basically called everyone on the crew by a nickname until after Enies Lobby.
Law too. Being told you’re worthless is dehumanizing and GOD Law experienced a truly heartbreaking amount of dehumanization.
I was originally going to say that this wasn’t from birth and wasn’t tied to his bloodline, but with amber lead’s genetic link and how it shortens the lifespan of each subsequent generation…yeah it actually is. Hadn’t realized that fully until now.
Sanji, Ace, and Law were all treated like they’re worthless because of their blood. They were all set up for failure. 💔

Wano reopened so many people's wounds over Ace (myself included). I remember watching Ace meet Otama and seeing Otama's woven hats and having to pause the anime. I started bawling because I realized where Ace had learned how to make Little Oars Jr.'s hat and that connection for whatever reason just hit me so hard. Honestly Ace had been the character responsible for the majority of my tears while reading/watching One Piece (until recently) and I've cried a lot during my journey with this story.
Currently sobbing over a fictional pirate, Ace's story cuts me to pieces he just needs someone to tell him that hes loved and allowed to live :(. I'll always miss my favorite flame boy, his will will forever live on with Luffy and Sabo, his story will never be forgotten.
"Thank you for loving me" is just so raw.
In a lot of ways, Ace gets to me because yes, his death hurts Luffy so profoundly that I was inconsolable seeing him so broken down. That scream? Haunts me still. But I hurt FOR Ace too because...well I'm now 30, but I was around the same age as Ace (19 or so) when I got to this part in the story. There is this transition in life when you start to see the world as it is, you see the unfairness, you start to question the systems of the world, you start to fear your own fate and having to figure out who you are. I was encountering racial hatred too, and these sentiments that by birth, I was seen in a certain way by certain people, and the pressure to perform "non-Blackness" in various ways to avoid being stereotyped. It spoke to me. Ace's decisions, his tears, his freedom and him CHOOSING how he dies, only to still be remembered as the son of a devil, it's healing and hurtful all at once. I am not a sibling, but I understood what Ace felt. And I also felt what Luffy felt as someone clinging to childlike innocence and hope with everything I had. The way Marineford and the Sabaody unfold is that smack of reality, having to accept that there are indeed things we cannot change, but even in that despair, there are some things we CAN change. Luffy is the symbol of childlike innocence, hope, and bottled joy. Ace's "secret", his burdens, his insecurities and his death, represents adulthood, the shedding of that innocent perception of the world. Ace's death is Luffy coming up against this in a literal way. And it made me face all of that too. Ace's story is a love story. Self-love, familial-love, love of friendship, it's a lot deeper than people give it credit for.
SYMBOLISM, BIATCH!
I've never been able to think about Ace out of his personal hardships, i could never see past the "individual" to understand the many symbolism his character could hold. Probably because the difficulties he faces as a person are already so complex and the way he reacts to them is full of ambivalence and depth.. it's already a lot to unpack.
But now the layer you are exposing here, linking it to the transition to adulthood...it's a little ground breaking to me. Hits a lil too close to home, to begin with. But also im just trying to process how this story or character can hold so many meanings, and very real very sensible experiences, like the one you managed to put into words.
My reading of the answer Garp gave Ace was _completely_ different in tone (and the translation was different too). "You can only find that out by continuing to live" reads nothing like "atone for the sins of your father" to me, it's _"you_ decide whether you should have been born or not, and you can only decide that by continuing to live". An encouragement for Ace to live and find his own worth.
True, Garp's message was like just live the way you want it. Your destiny is always in your hands. You dictate your own future by your own choices only, not by living in his past connections.
I fully agree with this (even though Garp very clearly wants those kids to find meaning in life by joining the marines) but counterpoint: that's a well-intentioned but wrong answer on Garp's part. It's super important to Ace's character, and he dwells on it his whole life, but the true answer to that question, and the one Ace genuinely needed to hear and have confirmed by his loved ones is "Yes, you do. You always did. Every child deserves life and happiness. You're invaluable and loved and you deserve none of this abuse and terror you have to live with/the threat of death hanging over you and I will protect/fight for you and want you to be here." It's one of those misguided statements that parents think helps you and mean well by saying but honestly kinda fucks you up, and I think on a deeper level his stressing Ace finding his own path rather than directly addressing the underlying problem of "Is everyone right to tell me I should die?" may stem from his fear of truly confirming to Ace and having the discussion about the fact that the persecution he faces from other people-particularly that committed by the Navy-is/was fundamentally unjustifiable and honestly delegitimizes the whole institution. He'd have to confront so many demons explaining to a child why he has to keep serving a genocidal organization that killed his mom and still wants to kill Ace. So he just tells Ace "make your own path" to try and encourage him, hoping it'll convince him that he can make a good life for himself, but the underlying self hatred still haunts Ace his entire life, even though he tries everything to break away from it
I alway feel like its extremely tragic Ace’s death is because a trait he share with Roger. In a serie about found family and how blood relation isn’t everything Ace is somehow the only person entirely define by who he’s related to

I know im supposed to laugh at your joke but it makes my heart happy that Ace went out knowing how loved he was in the end. And what better way to finally go than in the arms of someone he loved more than life itself?
Something I found interesting is that we see Ace traveling around on a tiny boat meant for one person just like the first time we see Mihawk. It’s a small detail meant to emphasize just how powerful ace was.
Whatever people say or criticize about Ace, his last words and death in Luffy's arms it's so heartbroken. I don't know anyone who actually didn't like him that hasn't suffer with that part. Absolutly devastating.
I love how Sabo is one of the stars to Luffys deep need to protect the people he loves and get stronger but he still had this presence of Ace as an older protector figure who doesn’t NEED to be protected and is stronger than LUFFY so when he dies it shakes Luffy at the very foundation of his being like that one bit of security is ripped away from him in minutes. Ace builds himself up as this cool older brother whos got it all figured out but he is like dieing inside all the tnime the man’s self esteem is in the ground

Oh you absolutely understood the assignment cause I'm bawling LMAOOO Ace means the world to me because despite having the worse self-esteem, he has the biggest heart and loves so much that hundreds of people fought to get him out. I like to imagine all of them had a little story showing how kind Ace was to them like the story of Oars Jr and his reason for fighting in that war. And don't get me started on his and Luffys bond, that shit is so strong and full of love, seeing Luffy spiraling post-marineford is enough proof of that love. And the way his memory lives on like with Luffy developing red hawk as a move for his brother's flame fist, yeah I really love the impact Ace has left in the story :)
Seeing Ace just break when he finds everyone fighting to keep him alive, truly just hit me to my core. I have struggles with self worth and usually feel like it wouldn't matter much if I was here or not. This is why I just crash inside to see Ace finally seeing that even if he is being damned for what he is, there are still people in front of him that value him. T_T I'm a part time creative drawing instructor and I refer One Piece a lot not just for drawing instructions but for amazing character stories and life lessons T_T
As someone who was a younger sibling and who had to bury an older sibling I always had a lot of feelings surrounding Luffy's situation, so much so that while I understood Ace's relationship with White Beard I somehow never connected the dots as to how Ace came to really, personally become Luffy's big brother.
When I was really small, we would fight all the time, me and my older brothers. But on his funeral someone told me he talked about me all the time. My other brother is a father now, it's been years but we still talk about him. Really wish he realised how loved he was.
He was a fucking asshole though, don't get me wrong on that. But he was still loved.
I'm also a bigger fan of Ace being there for the Straw Hats' journey through the desert because I feel we as an audience are connected to Ace. In the manga, I always felt like we are connected to Ace, through Luffy. I'm not connected to Ace himself. So when he gets captured by Blackbeard, I'm not thinking "Okay, Ace is captured, how will Luffy react?" I'm thinking "Son of a bitch, Ace was captured!" But in the anime, we spend time with Ace. There's time to build that connection.

The instant Ace's death was translated in the manga it was everywhere. I can't think of a character death since in all of anime that hit a community like that. Oda is underappreciated when it comes to this. For a dude who takes shots, including from me, over how few characters in One Piece genuinely die, he made one of the most impactful ones I've seen.

One of my favorite scenes in the anime (or any anime tbh) is Ace and Yamato sitting by the campfire. It is so emotional and powerful for both characters... but they don't even realize fully the weight of their words. To them its just a nice hang with someone you care about. Its so beautifully animated and stylish.
Yamato definitely liked Ace more than he did her. He was one of her few friends ever. And she was always so cute and excited
Ace is the knife that Oda just keeps on twisting. I am currently watching through Wano and my god, I've choked back tears 3 separate times so far because of Ace.
Everything about Ace from his design, his name, his character, his writing, his backstory and even his dialogue is just all so cool and well done.
For most my life being an older brother was pretty much my entire personality. Not that thats changed, I love my siblings, but weve physically grown apart over the years so I've had time to grow by myself. Regardless, Ive always resonated so mucu with Ace, Itachi, and Ichigo cayse that. Ace's death always destroys me cause not only is he an older brother, but I also always questioned why I was born and for what other than loving my sibs, so when he says "Thank you for loving me" to everyone I just get destroyed cause I could feel that so hard. Ace was an amazing character in this series, I love him so much. The best donut in manga for sure.
Another banger video, Melonteee! But I kind of wanna add my two cents in to Garp's conversation with Ace, 18:06. How I interpret Garp's answer to Ace's question was that Ace, himself, should come to his own conclusions as he grows and meets people in his life. Ace grew up hearing from everyone around him that his father was the most hated person in the world, and he grew up filled with pain, anger, and the belief that his very life was unwelcome and undesired by the whole world. A single person telling him “yeah, you totally should have been born” wasn’t going to make up for that in my opinion. People can disagree, but I feel like Garp’s answer was an appropriate and helpful one. Ace had to find his own place in the world. Garp could never have made Ace believe that his life had true value all on his own-Ace needed to keep on living, and go out in the world and find the answer to his life’s question on his own.
And when it finally came time for Ace’s execution, I think Ace understood quite well how much he meant to Garp, Luffy, Whitebeard, and all of his crew.
This is an objectively true comment and I hope it gets more traction. I feel like Melon didn’t look at closely at Garps words and actions, especially the part where she says Roger “begged an enemy who hunted him relentlessly to save his son”, Roger obviously never once saw Garp as an enemy and him asking Garp to help Ace was a choice made from trust, not desperation.
Hope she reneges on her assessment of his words when she does a Garp video.
And it is obvious that Garp loves Ace as well. He's angry that Luffy and Ace became pirates because it meant that, sooner or later, they might be killed. And his death hurt him to the point of practically quitting the Marines; when that wasn't allowed, he then started to change them from within. Had Ace not died, Garp might still be eating crackers and mocking the government without a care in the world.
She seems to have a chip on her shoulder about Garp in general.
Was looking for a comment like this. I know there's a lot of Garp dissatisfaction in the community with how hands off / neglectful he was as a grandfather (and I can agree) but his reply to Ace is as your comment says, basically saying "should I have been born? live and find the answer" which is the best way to find worth in life.
Also side note, I always thought Garp wanting them to be marines wasn't so much Justice but just as grounds of a path where Garp found his place in the world and believed Ace (and Luffy) could find a place they could carve out in the marines too. So, was surprised with Melon aligning of it as "atoning for the father" by being a marine, rather than "finding purpose and worth in life" by being a marine (look at Coby). Felt like it was a bit of a disservice to the Garp when the man's not that hell bent on the actions of blood ties (hell his son's a revolutionary), and seems to understand finding worth in life lol my 2 cents as well, now we have 4 cents here
Yeah and it's important to remember that while Garp did want Luffy and Ace to be marines, he's perfectly happy that they're living the lives they want. Him reminding Ace of his own desires in Impel Down always came off as him wrestling with the situation and thinking of the what ifs, should haves and if onlys for me.
ace is a character that was so blatantly written to be LOVED by every reader who meets him, and that is the most tragic thing about him.
The the fact ace notably says sorry and thank you more often is obviously big brother vibes but also the anime saying he literally got taught how to say thank you and took lessons like it hits it hits
For someone who doesn't claim Ace as a favorite character, you absolutely did him justice. He holds a very special place in my heart, and I hate it when I see people talk smack about his death. I'm a younger sibling too, and I think another part of why he's so impactful is because of the heart wrenching and beautiful effect he has on Luffy. Thank you for yet another great video!! The Ace fandom just got a win! I'm so glad you've made a video about him. He was my favorite character in the series the moment he was introduced, and he's never moved from that #1 spot. If I tried listing everything I love about him, it would just be paragraphs on paragraphs, so I'll just mention two points. My favorite aspect of him is when it's shown why he doesn't turn his back and WHY he never runs. It has to be the part of his character I admire the most. My other favorite moments is whenever Garp is speaking to him and what Garp says on the execution platform. Thank you so much for making such a wonderful video about him and doing him justice!

Ace asking Grap if he should have been born Grap's answer in the other translation like in the anime and the Thai translation goes along the lines of "You'll have to keep living to find out" I always see it as an encouragement for Ace to keep living. Kinda like what Saul said to Robin, to keep living and you'll find people who will love and accept you.
I wept for Ace. He wasn't a prominent character in the series but the sheer love the Whitebeard pirates and Luffy had for him, to where they laid their lives on the line, was special.
I think the Post-War arc is liable for Ace’s continued love amongst the fans. Seeing his tragic backstory after he dies just cements his legacy whenever he’s brought up.
I remember stalling watching Marineford cause I already knew Ace would die. Taking such a long break between Marineford and the post war arc to just collect myself. Only to then be smacked in the face aith Ace's backstory and Sabo's "death." Thanks Oda
Ace is the character that got me fully emotionally invested in one piece. So excited for your analysis of my boy!
Ace believing he was unloved because from the moment he was born because of how much of a crime his birth was in the eyes of the world government and later grew up hearing how much he shouldn't be alive. He grew up believing that. The fact that Ace turned to anger and isolation throughout his childhood only makes me wonder what would have happened to him had he not had Sabo and especially, Luffy. Having been in that mindset before, the fact that Ace hadn't thought about A) hurting others the way they hurt him or B) offing himself is something I've thought about a lot since finishing Marineford. I think that he still held onto those beliefs up until Luffy finally got to him. I think what hurt me more is knowing how much Luffy and Ace meant to each other because even if I don't tell them as much as I should, that is how I feel for my own siblings. I see a lot of myself in Ace in the older sibling and mentally struggling areas. That feeling of wanting to be wanted is a pain I would never wish upon anyone so seeing Ace go through that mentality his entire life I think is what made cry even harder about his passing. Add in the grief Luffy went through after and the feeling of being a failure for not protecting Ace who was probably the first to love him unconditionally, oh hell I was going through it. I think that's why now going through the series I kinda question why nobody has murked any of the villians. It was bad enough dealing with the Marines, but now knowing what we know about Imu, the World Gov't, Celestial Dragons, etc and how it all ties into the pain and suffering of a majority of the characters, I'm thinking 'People need to start d-wording or I'm going to get angry.' Like I wanted to see heads roll during Sabaody part 1 immediately after meeting the Celestial Dragons. I know eventually it will happen, but I need to start seeing the big villains getting what's coming to them. Kuma punching Saturn made me viscerally happy.
In his final words, he said that if he didnt meet Sabo and Luffy he would have killed himself 😢

The thing that made me cry over ace wasn't his death or his backstory but it was luffy's screaming out for him on boa's island. He had a massive impact on the world and to see his brother scream out in pain of losing him was gut-wrenching

Ace's story asks the question of what is the value of an individual's life and whether we need to justify our existence. The conclusion he arrives at (his last-minute epiphany) is that we don’t need permission to live, and we are all worthy of love. His human connections, how his family, friends, and allies were willing to go to any length to save him, it proved to him thay inherent worth. It finally persuaded his distrustful heart of the fact that he is irrepleacable and treasured.
You are right about Ace being a very tragic character, for obvious reasons (many of which you mentioned on the video). Personally, I don't know if I like his personality or not, but what catches my attention is the contrast between his behavior and his inner thoughts. Outwardly, he acts confident, independent, spontaneous, cheerful, (specially in adulthood). But inwardly he has a huge inferiority complex. He knows he's strong and skillful when it comes to fighting. But he never tries to confront his bias about his father or learn more about where he comes from. Despite not knowing much about what type of man Roger really was, he shows no desire to learn about him. Ace simply assumes his father must have been a bad person because he has a bad reputation, and blames him for everything (I understand being mistreated by association is traumatic, but I mean Ace didn't try to question his feelings at all). He seems easy-going, but he holds grudges and deep rooted resentment. He can't let go. He seems friendly, but he has walls up and tests people's loyalty before allowing them in. He seems humorous and like an airhead, but he can be cunning. I often hear Ace fans saying they love how brave and strong he was... But honestly, and I say this with no malice, I consider him to have been a very sensitive and emotionally vulnerable person (his entire life). He is someone who hides pain behind bravado, who hides fear of rejection behind belligerance, who hides self-worth issues behind charisma. And there are many sucessful people like him in the world, people who despite being admired have a certain fragility inside.
Ace's biggest curse wasn't his need to be reassured or validated, but his resistance to accept other people's love. It's hard for him to accept love because he anticipates deception. It's easier to be a lone wolf to protect your heart. So, I guess the details of how that tragedy was orchestrated don't matter as much as Ace last words, that is what matters: that he died being freed from his own emotional chains, allowing himself to accept the help so many were offering to him with genuine devotion. That he broke free from his mental cage, letting go of the false belief that he needed to justify his right to live. He finally understood his worth: by letting go of victimization, he allowed gratitude to come in, he was able to focus on the good memories and the display of unconditional love before his eyes. His family fought a war for him, they showed him his live was invaluable.
PD: I disagree about the argument you made in relation to him turning around to keep fighting... That was definitely not an act of care, that was an act of impulsiveness that came from his tendency to be reactive, defensive and stubborn. It was a pattern. A bad habit he wasn't able to get ride of. And that's ok, everyone has flaws and everyone makes reckless decisions when they're under pressure, full of adrenaline and emotionally distressed. The negative side of pride doesn't necessarily come from a big ego being out of check (arrogance, egocentrism), disproportionate pride can come from insecurity (a need to prove yourself, to overcompensate, lack of self worth, which are things Ace displayed since childhood). Ace also notably was emotionally overly-reactive and had a lot of anger.
I am not sure what Oda intended to be our take-away about Ace, maybe he wanted us to see him as someone "cool" who doesn't "go back from his word", someone who is fearless. But regardless of if his last confrontation came across or was interpreted as he wanted, the results wouldn't have changed if Ace had run away faster with Luffy, or if his people had arrived earlier. From a narrative point of view, Ace not surviving was a plot point that Oda had decided since the begining, a loss that would force the protagonist to mature and that would leave a mark on key players of the story and influence many of their future motivations.

i remember being soooo in love with ace as a child and i still have that feeling in me, when we got to see otama talking about ace and interacting with him i felt so reflected in her, even my older brother said that i was like otama, it was like reconnecting with my childhood in some way and i surely cried again lol

After finishing this video I had to cry my eyes out all over again as I usually do if i think about him too much. I think I saw a lot of my own issues in Ace and seeing people love him and assure him that he will be loved, that he is loved, that he deserves it- that shit always hits so hard. Seeing him grow to love and protect Luffy, to take up SABO'S torch and learn manners just to thank Shanks for saving his baby brother??? That hits hard, especially now that we know Sabo is taking up his flame now once again. GOD. Love him so so much. I love how his presence mattered- even though he was gone, his existence echoed through everyone.

Technically not but really well fitting in, and more than enough to show how really good of a person he is caring for luffy and the other way round. It was a good choice , as it really improved ace and luffys relationship shown.

Ace is definitely in my top 10, as an older brother I immediately connected to him all the while wishing he was my older brother. It’s not easy being the oldest in a broken family, but I’ll shield my little siblings from as much as possible even if it kills me. (Just incase, we’ve gotten away from the issue and are living a lot more peacefully now)

This is a really interesting reflection I had. When I first watched one piece ace was my favorite. I couldn’t really point out why besides he was really pretty and I was devastated by his death. This was around the time I was 16 with unacknowledged self worth issues and a 6 year old brother I didn’t really care for all that much at the time. Fast forward to now, I rewatched/caught up with one piece again 10 years later. I hold a much stronger and deeper attachment to ace now that I’ve healed some inner child wounds and as an older sibling. Similar to ace, I always, and still do, feel alone at times because I couldn’t be accepted or loved just as I was. I desperately did and still do yearn to be loved and proved that my existence holds some influence, worth, or meaning to others.
And while I still struggle immensely with feeling alone I’ve developed such a nurturing and healing bond with my younger brother. Even though I currently live away from him, we text/talk daily, play games together, he sends me videos and pictures of our dog, tells me about school, and sends me tiktoks. This sounds silly, but when I was on a random FaceTime with my brother gushing about my new air fryer I could hear the laughter and joy in his voice which suddenly hit me that “oh, my brother genuinely does enjoy my company, I do really matter to him just the way I am”.
And from there my brain kind of broke. I really needed love. I needed to know that I wasn’t completely alone and that at least one person could love me the way I am. It’s funny how that happens when I’m so much older, but after that realization I really did feel a greater sense of ease and happiness. Sibling bonds are my favorite and I’m amazed at how much I can relate to ace

Ace was a great character in my opinion. My only wish was that he had the chance to see the positive side of Roger just like Luffy did.
the reason why i love ace so much is exactly how you said it. he is the epitome and embodiment of the impact of love when done right. the novels do so much more of really honing this all in and getting a better look into his mind so i still feel that is certainly worth a read.
ace is such a complex character and one of my biggest pet peeves is when people dumb him down to his final decision that ultimately ended his life. the parallels are incredible and while before i was annoyed at it. it's such an oda thing to fully showcase ace's upbringing only after his passing. i think it's so much more impactful that way. sigh... i miss him 😭.

I always feels frustrated and angry everytime i remembering on how Ace stay behind. Over time since the tragedy, its seems like i lose my sympathy for Ace and always said I'm more sad for Luffy. But after i watch your video i remember few things about how sad and tragic he is as a character and drop a painful tear while watching this video a few times. The moment he hug Luffy, what he said, how he never meet his father and have the wrong impression about him and how he ask Luffy about is he want him as a friend. Your video makes me realize why i frustrated and blame him on why he isn't run, not because i hate him but because i want Ace to be alive so bad. Thanks for the video Melo.

Edit: reason why I love Ace is because as the youngest sibling myself I understand Luffy. I've been in those shoes, running after an older sibling that you admire and look up to.
It doesn't help that I also somewhat see my oldest brother in Ace, it really makes it personal on that lvl. But also the mere fact that all he wanted was to be loved and seen for who he is as a person and yet being hated as if simply wishing to be loved was a crime is so heartbreaking to me. It shows just how suffocating the world of one piece is and it's genuinely sad especially since Ace wasn't a threat to the world government, he was perfectly happy with his life as Whitebeards son and commander as well as being Luffys brother. All in all I love Ace and the ASL brothers will always be a huge comfort to me no matter what ❤️🧡💙

I was there when it happened, i was there when the spoilers come and the internet got crazy about it, i didnt read the spoilers because the story of marineford was so good that i wanted to read it directly and i will tell you i cry with Luffy, and after that i cry with the videos of other fans, it was amazing.
One thing that made me smile through the tears during Ace’s death is the fact that he died as a free man. One Piece is all about freedom and the people who bear the will of D are the people who fought for freedom, after all. I already knew about Ace’s death even before starting One Piece thanks to spoilers but when I caught up to Marineford, I was oh so relieved to see he died free of the cuffs. That was such a symbolic little detail that helped me soothe the ache.

I was so excited to see this video pop up in my recommended. Ace has been one of my top three favorite One Piece characters since he was first introduced and I'm so happy to hear your thoughts on him and his arc. Mainly I wanted to say THANK YOU for pointing out that Ace wasn't being a prideful idiot during his death scene. I was so surprised to see how many people interpreted it that way after I had reached that part of Marineford. It wasn't the fact that he engaged with Akainu instead of escaping with the others that I focused on, but the fact that he died protecting Luffy. I don't see how that was a stupid thing to do (plus for all the reasons you mentioned, it's perfectly in-character).
I feel like Sabo warranted more of a mention in this video, if only to briefly note that he too is carrying out Ace's will in his own way (namely, by taking on his powers), but other than that tiny nitpick, I enjoyed this!
Side Note: I remember when Frozen (The Disney Movie) first came out featuring Elsa the Ice Queen and my younger sister out of nowhere commented on Elsa's lack of a Love Interest by the end of the first film. She said; ' Wouldn't it be great for Elsa to encounter a man who can use Fire/Flames as his power.'...
That instantly made me think of OUR BOY HERE and I was suddenly thinking that it was honestly what Disney SHOULD have done for the sequels to Frozen. ... Elsa had become an established Ruler of her Kingdom and therefore her duty would be to bettering the lives of her subjects... But it would've made for a fantastic conflict for her to meet up or even be Rescued/Assisted suddenly by an 'Ace Type' character... (Perhaps against a group of people or a neighboring Kingdom hell-bent on stealing her powers?)
This would pose a conflict for BOTH of these characters as someone like Ace finds it difficult to stay in one place for too long... Perhaps they both want to be with one another, but one is travelling in search of something on the Seas while the other has been trained and and entrusted with the Leadership and Security of her kingdom....
Ultimately the best ending would of course to be for Princess Elsa to head out travelling with this man and this could've spiraled into becoming the Plot of the next Film in that series.
UGH!... Such wasted opportunities Disney!!!! A Sequel Film to this ^^^^^^ could've also helped explain perhaps just where Elsa gained her Ice Powers from! Yeah the actual Sequel they had was decent, but THIS new kinda plot could've ended up being Far better!
I think Ace's bond with WB is just as important as his bond to Luffy. No matter how amazing Luffy was he was the YOUNGER brother and therefore he couldn't give Ace this important piece he needed
Marine word arc was unexpected but one of my favorites because at the time it was uncommon that a hero or a protagonist tried to save but failed and destroyed him. that's impressive but memorable.
I think Ace appeals to me so much just from how he was presented in those Alabasta episodes of the anime, and I related to my own older brother, the points you touched on in the "Alabasta, Ace, and Introduction" portion honed down on my love for this character. Thanks Mel.

As a younger sibling myself, I also love how Ace's story highlights Luffy, as a little brother, for the love he has to give. The narrative is usually always that younger siblings are clingy, and needy, and a bit annoying, but you love them /in spite/ of that, and the big sibling is a bit of a hero for caring for them. So to see a story where a younger sibling changes their brother's life WITH that very love and clinginess, resonates hard with me 🥺
Luffys reaction to it is always so heart wrenching like for one the anime version gives us a master class of Mayumi Tanaka because we usually only get the bright or serious side of Luffy but in that moment we saw one that was utterly destroyed. It really hurts to see and hear Luffy like that as well as Ace's final goodbye as he realizes he was truly loved.
As a big bro I always really connected with "big brother" figures in media, but damn, ACE.
He's everything I want to be, both to myself, and to others.
He immediately was, and still is, my favorite character in the entire story of One Piece, and god are there some good contenders in there.

Ace means so much to me as a older brother, a free spirit who had lots of anger issues and fights as a kid on top of this have low self esteem Ace was the package
His goal to just be loved resonated with me a ton and the love for his younger sibling with such compassion and care made me want to fight even harder to make sure they fight for there own dreams
I can never forget my favorite one piece character heck almost one of my all time favorites behind nightwing but Ace is to relatable plus helped me push through my own self esteem issues and told me to “LIVE MY LIFE WITH NO REGRETS”
