Jon is a great guy & one of my former band mates. We all went to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts school together & started Trombone Shorty’s original Band. Peace & Blessings brother!!
Growing up in New Orleans is so special. We went to high school football games to hear the band, not watch the game! Super Sunday’s and second lines. So proud of Jon Baptiste!
Very real statement. "Their minds dont have Genres they are just looking for experiences " that's powerful. Wish we as a people understood that when it comes to races too.
People like Batiste should be more common... He talks about the spirit of music, which is much forgotten due to monetization. You really have to look for it but the people who notice it have gifted ears.
I met him when The Stay Human Band was touring before he got the Colbert Report and I wish I hadn’t been in sweatpants, haha. He was very kind and gracious and genuine. Im so happy for his success.
I love that you guys interviewed Jon Batiste. I myself have a masters in music and love seeing a young black man coming out of Juilliard, having been classically trained, doing his thing. He is truly gifted.
This guy is brilliant. Have watched videos of him breaking down the history of music and how different genres influenced others throughout the years. Incredibly knowledgeable and talented. Great interview.
Love that accent. He and SupaCent have me geeked when they talk. I enjoy him on Colbert. He and those adlibs have me dying sometimes! Great to hear a musician talk about the composition and arrangement of music, and how if affects culture, time, social norms. I really appreciate these interviews! Thank you!
This guy is G! I followed his career and I definitely love The Colbert Report... I hope he keeps doing what he does because he's amazing on it and being a black man that grew up on Jazz himself and my father being a saxophone player I give thanks to individuals like himself that put themselves out there to really push forward for this generation of music for the 21st century of individuals that can learn something or two from him.
I love this man with all my heart. He just seems like a really great guy, who ALSO happens to have a ton of musical talent. Everything I hear from him is brilliant.
I was researching Jon online because I've been a huge fan of Colbert since the early days, I knew they had formed a strong bond and wanted to understand why. Found this interview. Jon really comes off as an incredibly smart and talented guy. Wish he had more airtime on the show.
That's NOLA baby! Being from New Orleans, Jazz has always been a part of life for me. It's definitely not dead, it's just not commercially pushed/appreciated like other genres. Like he said a lot of Hip-Hop has been influenced by Jazz. For example: "Hypnotize" by Biggie is from a song called "Rise" by Herb Albert.
Alright, here is my mea culpa. I used to call Jon, discount Kevin Eubanks, before I knew who he was or witnessed his talent. I was wrong, this brother is a great musician and example of success. My bad for the disrespect.
We are indeed a unique people! I've always loved music: Jazz, Classical, Hip-Hop, R&B. My favorite jazz musicians are: Dizzy, Louis, Coltrane, Davis.... Wow....this was a great interview!
I'm 28 from Chicago and I looove jazz. I love good music period but jazz is my love. I've been hearing a lot of "trap jazz" lately and I like. Duke, Coltrane, Mile Davis, Louis Armstrong, Thelonius Monk, Vandell Jones, etc
Been fan of Jon's for a long time, back when he and his band would be playing in front of Lincoln center on random evenings. I could listen to him talk and perform for hours. I'll be the first to see his musical!
Jon you need to go to Brazil, especially Salvador in Bahia. Work with Carlinhos Brown , one of our best musician! Music is in the air in my lovely city .
This was a great interview. I love Jazz, it helps to focus and create. I truly understand what he means by seeing images. All of my art is based on images and ideas planted in my head.
Jon , I know you will go down in history as one of the best musicians ever , Stephen Colbert is just a starting gig , hearing you talk is addictive . I’m not a musician but my family is full of musicians and music teachers and music majors , I am only good at science and didn’t feel natural in music it was hard for me always but I have a passion for music because music makes me feel good by listening to different genres based on how I feel and I love it , I’ll be one of the guys buying a ticket to one of ur shows in the future , love u and ur craft bro !!!
This man is brilliant..grew up in a musical family and although I don't currently play I'm still a creative as a dancer and recognize the power music has on the psyche of the ppl.
In regards to blacks playing country music...the banjo is an African instrument. Also, apparently, the rodeo was started by a black man. Not saying that white men have not contributed to these things but we do live in an historical narrative that suppresses valuable contributions of non white male. For instance, as dramatized by the movie, Hidden Figures.
Batiste is not a man, he is a walking spirit. ❤️
This is a very powerful spiritual man, his interview feels like a sermon for the creatives waning in faith.
Ama Kinati z
He is the human form off jazz music, laid back cool and smooth.
It's in his soul.
Yep, like a real life Anthony Bua painting 🎨🎨🎨!!!
Jon Is talented as hell
Love him! Love when he laughs over there in his corner on Colbert

Very real statement. "Their minds dont have Genres they are just looking for experiences " that's powerful. Wish we as a people understood that when it comes to races too.

It's amazing how these people have no idea who the Baptiste family are and that New Orleans is such a center of music. Especially Jazz. ⚜️

Charlamagne said Kenny Chesney ruined jazz... Kenny G my guy
TheBigTerm You caught that too. 😂
TheBigTerm lmaoooo!!! I was like I thought Kenny Chesney is country. I knew I’d look through the comments and get that affirmed 😂
Thank you. I was so confused like "when did Kenney Chesney ruin jazz?"
Charlamange is an empty head. Thank goodness for Yee.
His ignorance is unbearable. 🤦🏾♀️ Stopped even trying to tolerate him and envy. Only here for this interview.
The whole damn family talented. And there’s a lot of them.
This Was A Very Informative Interview. Jon Provided Me With So Much Motivation, Thank You!
