This guy's no fool. He knows his American music history cold.
+dlbcomposer Wynton taught him well
As soon as his hands hit the keys, the tears flow. Every. Single. Time.
Jon's knowledge of music is so damn deep. He knows his music history, and he seem to have photographic memory of tunes. The one last year, he was like "Oh we never rehearsed this" and then man played like you are listening to recorded album
Jon - I am a 70 year old life-long lover of Garner, Ellington, Basie, Hines and Brubeck. As a piano player, you are welcome to enter my galaxy. As an educationalist, you teach me things I should have appreciated years ago. You are a star!
I, too, am older(87) and can say IMO Batiste is clearly a protege who belongs with those you mention - plus the other greats we both recall. He will keep our favorite form of music alive -
and well - thank goodness. He is blessed🥹 … and so are we listeners‼️
That Star Spangled Banner was awesome--sounded like the America I wish we had now, a diverse and colorful place, inclusive--from sea to shining sea.
This guy is one hellava talent...
U GOT IT MANN!
My big complaint about the Late Show is that we never get to hear Jon Batiste for more than a few notes--never an entire tune, since he mostly plays for the studio audience, while the TV audience just sees ads.
+Judith Ames Whitenack That's every talk show though. You wanna hear the music, go to a taping!
+Victor Kong I'd prefer Jon Batiste to any of the music groups that have shown up so far! Not to mention the cat circus.
Victor Kong sadly some of us that are not in the US don't get to go to a taping :( that's why I appreciate mini-concerts like this video where we get to hear him play!
Judith Ames Whitenack I can understand why they haven't had him play like this on the show. If he doesn't keep it minimal, every other musician they invite to perform would be overshadowed. It would be good for him, but all eyes would be on him and him alone. That could be disastrous for the show and what it stands for.
olive4naito you know what, you're right, that makes perfect sense. There are celebrities, then there are artists. People will inevitably make comparison between the two, and it wouldn't be good for business.
Note for future self : 28:18 : enchanting and haunting tune that made you shiver...
Ohh Jon ! How gifted ! Each note is more precious under your fingers...
What an awesome human being.
Jon is one of the best musicians alive today, and such a positive influence in many ways.
Can you just imagine who this prodigy will be 30 years from now?
Thanks Jon, I hope that one day you have a concert at the Ravinia Festival. To get the chance to hear your groove live can be nothing but pure happiness!!!
So much knowledge and so much talent. I'm a big fan.
I can't get enough of John Baptiste. So much soul.
For a show about music...the audio engineer totally fell asleep! The mic on the piano is clipping all over the place! It's a shame, kind of ruins the music.
yeah their sound eng is absolute garbage lmao
Teacher, artist, HUMANitarian, captivater, influencer, magician, GIANT God BLESS you & your pursuits ! Thank u for taking me on the educated ride of a lifetime-ME who thought she didn’t like JAZZ!
Crazy to think that this guy is my age and already a legend.
schlafanzyk He comes from a legendary family in New Orleans music.
WHY THE HELL DO WE TV VIEWERS NEVER SEE AND HEAR BATISTE PLAY ON THE SHOW?
i'D WATCH BEYOND THE MONOLOGUE IF HE DID!
An American treasure…..Dr. John Batiste, The Late Show.
Thoroughly informative. Inspiring to hear the history of it all!
OUT OF THIS WORLD! F A B. Thank you Batiste
Dr Jon is much more than a band leader
for me Jazz is one of the best forms of music.. I wish I could be in a Jazz band!!.. I would just jam for the entire day
WOW.’ Genius !!! Jon Baptist
I just started playing the piano at 26 and it absolutely blows my mind that people can play like this. I find it so difficult.
What a wonderful man
Jon, I am proud to see you doing the damn thing!Come back to Frenchman St.!
Jon Batiste, one day or today , WE JAM I hope
I need a recording of his version of "St. Louis Blues"!!! That tango rhythm at the piano... mmh I wasn't ready
Love Jon Batiste!
unreal musician
His Star Spangled Banner is up there w/ Jimi's.
+Filmmaker J That was the first thing i thought of as well!
recently discovered Jon Baptiste, though I did see the movie Soul and liked it, but I did not put the two and two together. He reminds me about James Booker (when he plays piano) and James Brown or Prince (when he performs). Seeing his down to earth life in American Symphony made me curios and now I am listening to whatever I can find....
Awesome performance!
I'm really excited to see him on The Late Show.
cafe brasil! god bless it
negro modelo & tribe nunzio haloween 92
thanks for the memories
Between songs, I can't seem to focus on his words, lol. My brain is still processing the thing he just played o.o
batiste tearing it up...
I forget where I'm at......
Phenomenal!!!
I love him. I am from New Orleans. Catholic of course. I saw you on NPR with him I cant spell his name . You are a sweetheart . Love your smile. good luck with everthing.
Damn. I think I've got a new favorite version of the Maple Leaf Rag.
GENIUS !!!
thanx i discover jhon baptiste
I've seen a lot guys "play" the melodica, but it always sounds like a toy. This cat is good!
Authenticity is his Brilliance. I slept on this guy. When I saw "Soul", I was awakened.
Louis' first horn came up much before his time in the Waif's Home. He was there twice, at age 9 and then 12, but he had his first horn at age 7 when working for the Karnofsky family. Their father paid for it and Louis paid back 50 cents/week. Secondly, his shooting a gun occurred on New Year's Eve 1913, not July 4 as stated by Jon. It was not a BB gun but his father's much more dangerous pistol, which he fired into the air in the streets in celebration of New Year's. A white police officer commandeered him and the next day he was in the Home, until age 14 and-a-half.
The scat singing at the end was the best part.
Who else wants to see a James Booker film starring this guy in the lead role?
Smooth
could someone post the link to that interview he was referring to at the start
It ain't in the least, if it ain't got Batiste. Shoo bop shoo bop doo bop doo bop...
28:00
Yes indeed 😍
Oh Yeah. I forgot. THANKS for taking your education SERIOUSLY.
When he said Rag time, for some reason despite it's.... let's say colored past..... I felt happy. (the U has been removed from colored to please spellchecker)
Anyone know what he plays after New Orleans blues?
Anyone know what he is playing at 28:18?
"Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child"
Maple Leaf Rag. 20:00
Someone knows the tracklist he played please ?
What's the song played at 28:08?
+bigtpsychoboy 'sometimes i feel like a motherless child'. spiritual.
Do somebody know the song at 24:28?
@17:07
What is the song played at 17:12?
+Lawrence Li Star Spangled Banner
Too bad they recorded this awesome session with a tin can.
what is he playing at 31:00?
Motherless Child
Actually it's - "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child"
who mic'd up the piano?... ouch....that peaking hurts my ears.
Is that called a hooter? Day by day
Just one thing Jon. You need to RELAX while playing. You're very good but you just look TENSE. Love the work though.
The melancholy song sounds like a nick drake song
The new great great Nina Simone
spread that jam or feel his wrath.
turn that crappy wireless microphone pack off; what're ya doing?! noooO!
How can you host an Event with one of the greatest musicians alive and not spend the money on a sound engineer.. There is no excuse..
This Americana kitsch music and the ditties aren't really my cup of tea - at all. I appreciate the talent and educational nature of this talk/presentation nevertheless. Even though it is essentially an exact copy of another one I've seen Baptiste do.
Who butchered this recording.??? full distortion. If you need an engineer, call me.
Dudes pretty bad. needs a feel lesson big time.
nch You DO realize that he is Juilliard trained, right?? What are your credentials??
And you’re ridiculously arrogant. Need a humility lesson big time. Jon, is now Grammy award winning. What about you?
Though you are joking, his talent is too great for jokes. Even Tim Minchin would be impressed.
