    I am by no means a music person, I'm studying engineering ffs. But god damn it, this is amazing. This type of transformation is what makes me awe about art. Turning the seemingly mundane into something to remember. That and I'm a sucker for music in the vein of Joe Hisaishi.

    I actually had a project in which I had been requested 5 japanese style songs, and I had a big problem trying to make them sound "japanese". I used a bunch of japanese scales and stuck with those, but never really thought about using different chords and borrowing chords from other scales. Sounds incredible

    @whuangjaison6931 Pƙed 2 lety +15

    Very nice! I especially like the Em9 with the Lydian color.
    I also think Japanese harmony is instead of normal jazz, but more modal-music with jazz harmony and modal interchanges, plus, at the same moment they reduce the chord notes. So you will see very often it is just a F7(no3) G7(no3) Asus->A something like that. And you can easily find non-standard chord like nor 3 or sus, but the bass motion explains well what harmony function it is, and meanwhile that have some tensions. And you can explain them in modal harmony function(or modal interchange) than a tonal harmony function.
    And I feel instead of Jazz-influence, it is maybe more Piazzolla's tango harmony influenced those Japanese composers. I always hear a lot of Piazzolla's chords progressions in their music instead of Duke Ellington's or John Coltrane's. It is just happened that people can also use jazz theory to explain Piazzolla's harmony. Piazzolla definitely influenced Japanese modern music a lot for some reasons. Just some thoughts to share. I might be wrong.

    This channel is amazing. This channel has given me alot of inspiration. The tip about not introducing your most colorful chords is awesome. I tend to do that and thats why I can't make a long piece that continues matching the beginning. It's because I don't know enough interesting chords to keep the piece moving. I tend to stay on these chords with minor variations. :D I have a problem with making intros from a motifs. I think that it will really help new writers like me to know how to slowly increase the complexity from a single motif. I have a 5 note motif that I have been experimenting with and I could keep it going because I start off on a bm9 then lead to a A6/9 then into a dmaj11/G finishing with E7(#9) leading to Aadd9. It is very hard to keep the momentum of so many different color tones. I now have the idea to lead into these. Thank you very much. I'm writing something for the April competition and it will be my first complete piece of composition. Tips from anyone welcome.
