For me there is but one enemy. For over three decades now… As a child I discovered my first fighting game in a local convenience store and was immediately intrigued. I pulled the only quarter I had out of my pocket and took to the streets to test my mettle. Unfortunately, it was over quickly. I picked a fighter with cool hair and he was tossed into a jungle location in Brazil to battle a green beast. The monster kept flying through the air and smashing into my character’s face, wounding him severely. With no idea how to play or what any of the buttons did, there was little hope of defending myself. The brute finished the fight by jumping up on my warrior and furiously biting into his throat. The blood loss was too much. My avatar, a brave military man, was defeated. At the time I had no words to describe the pain I felt. But I now know- I was damn salty. And the anger of that moment has never left me. tldr: FUCK Blanka.
I've had a full romantic comedy with I-no in Strive. When me and my waifu Ram got in a rut, I-no was the friend I hung out with to make her jealous. Slowly though, I-no taught me things, things I had never considered before. What a bad match-up looks like. How to wake up with out an invincible reversal. That a game plan can be more than far slash, rekka into sword throw. The cruel joy of the schmix-up game. It hasn't always been easy, but at the end of the movie I now truly know who I want to step on me.
It's weird that when I started back in Xrd SIGN, Zato was my enemy. Now in Strive I fucking love chilling out and playing Zato while intoxicated; he climbed all the way from Enemy to Friend. The magic of playing Zato while not sober is that it feels like you are working with Eddie towards a common goal, because you're definitively not going to be able to control that little fucker while intoxicated. A lot of times you're trying to do something, but then Eddie does something unexpected and you're like "I'll follow Eddie's lead and see what happens."

@keeganwullaert1696 hunt Eddie. Zatos personal neutral tools are kinda ass without him. At a distance, alot of players will send Eddie after you to bait a reaction, but when they do, alot of characters can dash 2k on reaction to kill Eddie b4 he does anything. Sometimes, Zato players will get tricky and have Eddie cross you up so his attacks push you into Zato. FD it. If you time your FD to only block Eddie, you'll be pushed far enough towards zato to throw punish him between attacks. Zatos aerials are pretty strong and his glide is great defensively. Super jump at him to maintain positional advantage. Eddie will take damage for Zato, effectively making whatever zato does in neutral free. (I think its "Oppose" that has Eddie standing up waiting to counterattack) Eddie does however tend to have long startups and he does not provide throw invulnerability. So, run up throw is a great way to break an average Zato players defensive and make them respect you, even in neutral often times.
Finding out this dynamic in team games is super fun for me. Building a team around your faves with characters you don’t like in ways that *actually* help you preform better with your faves is super rewarding
For team fighters you can just think of the necessary parts of the team shell as your friend's circle that you're not a part of but you still see when you hang out with them. So you get along with them as acquaintances even if they're not the homie you made plans with originally.
I picked my main, because I understood and relate with him on a personal level, Leo Whitefang. The guilt and shame of mistakes made in the past, however not being punished by people, law, nor God. Was I worthy being spared ? Of course not, yet here I am.
I do think this list is missing the character you personally relate to or identify with, or want to be your identifier to other players, as fighting games are still very social and who you pick is part of that expression if it's important to you. I've conceited that most players seem to have "attraction" mainly as the relation to a character they have a strong personal attachment to which is the kind of loyalist player mentioned here, but for those who pick a character based on their lore, look, vibe, personality, etc., because it's how they personally want to be represented, I see you.

I love happy chaos as a character, because he's the guilty gear version of my favorite villian from JoJo, Funny Valentine. Even his pink color is a reference to Funny Valentine and his ability D4C. His gameplay has a menacing quality that I love. I don't love characters like him normally either, he's just one of the few long range character I just took too. His solid close up game should be acknowledged as well.
My WF is absolutely May, she was the reason that is started playing GG and fighting games overall because of her design, I really loved that she was a pirate with a huge anchor as a weapon, It was hilarious. I had tried MK and Kof, I enjoyed the games, but they weren't my cup of tea, It wasn't until I played GG The Missing Link that I really wanted to learn about fighting games, because of the uniqueness and personality of each character and May wasn't the exception. I had a really good time playing her in every mainline GG and fell in love with the character, She had become my favorite fighting game character of all time.

My personal list for that would be for GG: Xrd, GG: Strive, UniClr, MBTL and BBCF Waifu: Orie the Potato Saint (UniClr) Friend: Ram (Strive and Xrd), Millia (Strive), Saber (MBTL), Hakumen (BBCF), Ino (Strive - before S2 Nago buffs) Ally: Ky (Strive), Sol (Xrd and Strive), Anji (Strive) Merc: Also Ky (Strive) and also Ramlethal (Strive) (when I started with them), Elphelt (kinda) (Xrd) Enemy: Bridget (Strive), Jacko (Strive), pre-winter patch Nago (Strive obv), Ino (Strive - after S2 Nago buffs), May (current Strive version) Now for the reasonings: - Ramlethal: started with her as merc and used to hate her when I was a casual in Strive. But when Nago got buffed at the start of season 2 I felt like the Ino Nago MU just felt borderline unwinnable and with HC being HC and people telling me to swap, I swapped to Ramlethal, first to have someone with an even MU spread and coz I like good buttons. Little did I know that I would grow very fond of Ramlethal and get slightly emotionally attached to her. She might have been part of the reason I enjoy dark skinned waifus now, but who knows its the chicken and egg problem. And I do not care about that rn, all I know is that I think Ram looks very cute and I really really enjoy her playstyle - in both Strive and Xrd for different reasons. I probably enjoy her Xrd version more on a gameplay and visual basis, coz I think her wild look is more creative compared to her much cleaner uniform look, but I like both for different reasons. I would be on the fence saying shes my waifu tho, coz I really just think of her as that friend that pulls you through hard times, coz shes definitely did. But maybe one day the brainrot will have reached that point. - Millia: I first picked her up coz I liked the idea of setplaying people to death from whiffpunishes. And I really really do like that. Plus fit blondes are my type, so Millia definitely checks that for me. But I generally prefer her more gameplay wise. The only reason I dont actually main her is because I cannot mentally handle matchups such as Millia Leo and Millia May. Never played nor playing her into Goldlewis either, I have some self respect as a human being. So for that reason she is only a friend I take out to have fun with (and I really do). - Saber: you probably thing shes a waifu pick but no I literally went on mizuumi and looked for the footsies char and she popped up. the fact shes a blonde knight that also happens to be a dork is just an extra cherry on top. I still prefer Mordred tho ADD HER TO MELTY YOU COWARDS AT FPAN!!! (jk ily but please I want her soooo baaaaad in an fg). - Hakumen (BBCF): hehehe 4C and parry go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Jokes aside not having to block is the best worst feeling to have. But it feels like Im on crack whenever I play him so I have to restrain myself...and his execution for his damaging routes really does hurt my hands so hes only a friend I take out a couple times a month. - Ino: my old flame in Strive...and now my biggest enemy in Strive. All caused by one...man.... season 2 buffs Nago....He took her away from me....or maybe it was just her growing pains and the fact she lost H stroke plus frames....either way I despise the character now and I am NEVER playing her again. - Ky: ok so this mfer has a funny story about him. I actually didnt really hate Ky ever coz I played Ram and Ram Ky is Ram favored..ish. So I literally never rly thought much of him....but the Ky mains downplayed him so soooo soooooo baaaaad, that at one point I just snapped and picked up Ky out of spite to win a tournament with him. That sadly didnt happen yet, but I did have a fuckton of fun learning him. I also became DEADLY aware of how busted stun dipper rrc is. And I also understand how easy it is to brainrot with Ky. Its somehow easier than with Ram and probably easier than with Nago and Bridget. But...supposing you keep the brainrot at bay, you will have a blast on Ky. He has all the tools a footsies character can have, with albeit short and committal pressure. But the pressure isnt that hard to work around, if anything its enjoyable with the rest of the tools he has. He really feels like a perfect character for me gameplay wise. I just dont rly think much of Ky, hes cool and his theme slaps but Im rly not a Ky simp. He is hot tho, I will die on that hill for my homies who would offer an arm for their king. - Orie: literally just female Ky with a rapier thats more of a dork than Saber. (I will anger Uni fans with this ik but lemme have this I know shes not rly anything like Ky gameplay wise trust me I know!) I loved her in UniClr and I was so devastated I could not play that game with anyone BUT we are getting Uni 2 now LETS FUCKING GO FINALLY I WILL BE ABLE TO PLAY ORIE ONLINE TO MY DEATH I WILL ACTUALLY BECOME THE STRONGEST ORIE IN EMEA ONCE IT DROPS YOU CANNOT STOP ME!!! - Sol: like him in both versions, not enough to commit to main him in either version. I dont have the sauce to make him look busted and Im fine with that. Hes still fun. - Anji: played him after he got buffed to relevancy, hes one of the most fun Ive had playing casuals with people. The serotonin hit from landing a parry super is a drug I cannot stop not trying to do run up parry I WILL DO IT STOP PRESSING ON WAKEUP I NEED SOMEONE TO CUT ME OFF!!!. He is omega fun, defo top 5 casuals char pick. Also kinda hard but hella sick combo routes. Actual dustloops my mind is being exploded! - Elphelt: started playing her so I could unblockable ppl to death. Shes fun her jD is a button among mankind but Im not degenerate enough to keep with her. Ram is my go to in Xrd and where my heart will forever lie. She IS the better sister, SUCK IT UP ELPHELT MAINS! - Bridget: Great design, Great story (if we take Strive story as a different entity from ACPR story, otherwise still valid attempt Daisuke keep it up) and...I can ignore her theme, some people like it. But since she released...shes been the BIGGEST frustration to me as a player EVER. I can say that, she has made me more angry than Jacko and S1 HC COMBINED. She is, by far, the only character that I WILL say that she is truly an anyone can cook with character that loses only due to her mains own lack of ability. Jesus christ she is probably the most HATE Ive ever harbored for a character gameplay wise. She is to me what HC is to most people. But I could go on and on and still have shit to throw and this character gameplay wise. Just know that if I ever catch you saying that Bridget Ram is a very winning matchup for Ramlethal, its on sight. Also her theme is ear infestation. - Nago (before winter patch nerfs): single handedly forced me to swap mains and made Hotashi think that Bridget is not that good by being captal B BROKEN AS ALL FUCK. I dont hate Nago outside gameplay tho, so post nerfs I dont hate him...that much. This video is surprisingly topical for me because as someone who is strongly motivated by character choices, not having a character I mesh with makes it hard for me to want to play the game at all. I'm realizing with SF6 as much as I thought I knew who I wanted to play none of the characters make me willing to push through the personal gripes I have with the game. Where as with guilty gear I could deal with many many MANY dumb things since I think Baiken is that dope of a character to play in legit any GG game
I wouldn't say I have any husbando/waifu characters, but I see my characters as more like favorite siblings and I play as if I'm kind of helping them unlock their dormant power to protect themselves from the evil blue guy with the gun, a lot of characters I don't like enough to main but I do love a lot of characters besides my mains, like faust, love that man, he's so chaotic but also just a really chill guy, like you kick his ass and he asks if *you're* ok, like what a guy fr.
GGST Sin has made himself that Husbando character for me. He's the best of what I love in not just fighting games, but games in general. And now that he's legitimately kinda OP I feel like playing him like I did has really paid off.
Hmm, if I were to go by these requirements, I think outta all the games I've played, only 1 fits your criteria with waifu/husbandos (personally like to call it character loyalty 😅), and that's johnny. I just like the way he looks and his moves. Vergil can be here as well. Everyone is sort of based on "is this character like ____. In my case, dudley/cody. They are those kind of characters I can relate to in my own little twisted world 😅. I don't think I have any mercenaries other than doctor doom, but with team games, especially the 2v2s, I really like the idea of seeing what wacky ideas can I come up with. In mvci, you would probably see me trying to run 3 different dante teams. I'm already plotting when it comes to project L, with yasuo 😈 Great video. Stay blessed

I feel like this significantly understates what you're bringing as a player: you mention that your choices are sometimes influenced by wanting to play tournaments, but I feel like that's a whole-ass dimension of this. In Blazblue CF, I played Izayoi and Mai. Izayoi was definitely my Friend, but I ended up playing a lot more Mai (Ally) because I didn't have the time to get gud - "big buttons go brrr" is very much my happy place, so I just scumbagged my way to domination of my locals.
Big band in Skullgirls is an ally to everyone. Big band is the only time I've put time into a big body, and it was absolutely worth it. Beat extend makes every team better.
Most of my character choices have been Friends but I had a problem of locking myself into specific play styles. So by the time Granblue came out I played Gran as an Ally, but Cagliostro is my waifu. I will never drop her for showing me that I can play characters that aren't grapplers or shotos. I have a debt to the game now that I must repay.

Like, if you looked at all your past mains in fighting games over the years, what would be the common theme between all those characters? What could be the reasons we prefer one characters' look/gameplay over the others?
This is one way to think about it, but I prefer to think about it not in terms of "degrees of liking", but in terms of "what reason did I pick up this character?" You could: Like the character's aesthetic AND their gameplay (The Perfect Fit) Like the character's aesthetic, but NOT their gameplay (The Waifu - yes, I'm using the same term you used but differently) Like the character's gameplay but NOT their aesthetic (The "Only a Main") Be generally indifferent to the character, but pocket them or include them on teams for pure value and coverage (The Right Tool for the Right Job) Hate the character's aesthetic and gameplay, but play them out of sheer spite (The "Yes this is as dumb as it looks") And each of these will pick up or put down characters for different reasons. Like, the "Only a Main" player might drop their character for a lower-tier one if they get a buff that meets their standard of "good enough." The player who plays a character they hate CAN be a meta-slave, but they can also be the capeless hero who saves their suffering brethren from the oppression of a degenerate menace. Etc Etc. For me, one "Perfect Fit" is I-no (Strive), a Waifu would be Baiken (Xrd), "Only a Main" would be Voldo (Soul Calibur), and my examples for the last two wouldn't be fighting games, but I've certainly done my fair share of hate-playing in DotA and other games, lol...
I picked my main because of one simple reason i love to piss people off and make them angry in game of course and look cool while doing so, i had no choice but to play Happy Chaos i love him hes my best friend and ill continue to play him to make everyone online as mad as possibly and have fun and look cool while doing so
I've had a couple characters get close to that top layer but I always can at least be excited by a new thing enough to where I'm very often willing to at least try other characters either as a break, for fun or to shore up holes.

Marisa, I like big body bruiser archetype, so Super Broly, Kagura from BB, Kliff from GGXX, all of them are Husbando/Waifu tier for me, my e-bikes tend to be the Pixie characters the Millias and Taos of the world, I wish the player would stop slamming like 5 energy drinks and running at me thinking I won’t just push buttons, also the pixie play style dose take nerves of steel at times so full respect.
1. Husbando- Potemkin//Guilty Gear series - He's a 50/50 crowd pleaser that's just fun to watch and play, I spend WAY too much time learning matchup knowledge and specifics just because its so satisfying to win with the one character, and originally I wanted him as a secondary (I'm just bad at playing as Sol) 2. Friend- Jin Kazama//Tekken series and Dee Jay in SF4 & SF6 - I try to use these characters as versatile as I can because I really, really like them for their character and aesthetics, and there's just a seemingly endless way to play as them in a variety of approaches and strats. So much so that I REALLY want them at my Husbando stat, but I admit, I am not the best at playing them to their maximized capability. Maybe one day when I become more aware of how to read frame data and play them at their best potential. 3. Allies- Ryu and Akuma//Street Fighter appearences - These two are EVERYWHERE, and they are pretty easy to pickup. There's times where I want to drop them because I'd think I've out grown them, but when I see a new title or a game I'm not entirely familiar with, these are my Go-To since I have the fundamentals down at least. 4. Mercenary- Jax Briggs//MK series or Devil Jin//TT2 - I'm not the biggest fan of NRS titles, and I find Devil Jin extremely enabling and easier to use than regular Jin, but if I really want a win or want to make someone shut up, these are the guys I hire to insure a chance at victory. 5. Enemy- Almost anyone in SSBU??, Noob Saibot from MK, Ky Kiske in GG - mostly any character I don't play or respect is because of how easy it is for them to use certain tools, and they optimize them in a way that I find not fair or respectable for me personally. I never play these characters, I just selected them because when I'd pick them a random select, I found them to be super easy, almost as if I was warranted to cheat, and I wouldn't put anymore time in studying how to play them, more than I would learn how to counter their gameplans and strats. This goes for any character that usually has lightning fast kicks or sweeps, have spammable zoner tools, annoying "death by 1000 cuts" safe play style, its just not my preference. I know when I'm beat, but I will study on how to overcome them for the next rematch. This was a fun video to think on and reflect on my character picks, nice video dude 😎
On SF6 waifi is Manon, my besties are Honda, Chun, Jamie....other than that, everyone is a mercenary, and JP my enemy. In Strive, May is waifu, Pot is my bestie, everyone else is my mercenary, and Happy, and Asuka my enemies.
This is kind of my mentality I really like myself about playing fighting games and playing a bunch of fighting games. I get to have this relationship with playing and enjoying the games and characters in said fighting games. It's something that just keeps me motivated to keep playing fighting games as you sometimes get to just develop relationship with these fictional characters as if they were real people be it good or bad. That could be said about any characters in media, but with fighting games it really feels more personalized, be it 1v1 or tag or team fighters. Honestly, I would say for the majority of fighting games I have a lot of friend type characters I would consider though some I could consider Waifu's or husbando's but I like to keep friends but also stay pretty loyal to them but also still have other characters around as well. For friends it would be: Leo Whitefang (Strive), Blake Belladona, Yang Xiao Long, Es, Bang, Kagura Yu, (BBTAG, BBCF, P4AU), Katalina, Charlotta, Gran, (GBFV), Trunks (DBFZ), Charlotte (Samshow), Arthur (UMvC3), Marisa, Manon (SF6), Lars, Alisa (Tekken 7), Hitomi, Helena (DOA), TMNT (Injustice), Empoleon (Pokken), Orie (Undernight), and don't even get me started on KOF but to mention a few would be Betty, King, Maxima and the Boi Terry. But that just to name a "few" characters that I consider that I vibe with or in the friend tier for myself. There are more games I've played that I would list but these are just some of the games that I enjoy and like playing or recently played and honestly a lot of my female cast of friends of characters that I would consider Waifu's like Es or even Katalina just name few choices.
My favorite dynamic is 2v2 games where it's your beloved waifu or husbando, and like, ted from accounting. Just another character there to make the person you actually WANT to play work.
First off: always appreciate your vids, often disagree, but that's why I continue to watch. This story might relate to this video in a maybe interesting way: Quick background: I started with World Warrior (Ryu main, Blanka main in Turbo), played various things, had a 15 year break from fighting games and came back into the genre with Skullgirls playing solo Peacock (~800 hours). My group decides to play BlazBlue since BBCPEX came out on steam. /end background story. So I see Taokaka and think "this character looks so fun; she's quirky and she moves everywhere!". I play her for ~2 months and can only get bodied hard with her, so I look up tech for this character and see that I need to learn a ton of different conversions (at the time daunting to me) or learn microdashes (honestly can't reliably press 66 to save my life anyway, 2-button dash in Skullgirls carried me hard). This was low-key devastating to me: up till now I always could play the character I was invested in and compete with my local group. Since I'm a cooperative guy, I play Hakumen instead, since I can at least play Street Fighter with him. Playing Hakumen made me feel incredibly stupid however; I felt like I didn't "get" anime games at all, with me mostly poking and defensively counterattacking people. Some months into this, I play a match against Terumi, and their intro sequence chat tips me off to the story connection between Hakumen and Jin. I hated Jin. Like, a lot. He wasn't hard to fight, but his story, personality, goals in life, dumb-ass fighting style. I just hated playing BlazBlue at that point, it was something I did out of duty, nothing else. But since I couldn't get anything out of the character there wasn't anything else to think about than playing the game. Started getting good at applying mind games to counters; labbed conversions off of every combination of magatama resources on my own. We held an open european netplay tournament, even placed third in it (and was the one to put 2nd in losers). Started labbing ToDs, but never used them as BBCF came out on steam (I switch characters in a version change out of principle, so I can learn something new). Played through all the BB story modes. After almost 2 years of playing him, I don't necessarily like Hakumen now, but I appreciate him. We went through a hard time together, and I'll always remember that. And I love counter moves now. It also made it a lot easier to adapt to any game where I couldn't find an immediately likeable character - heck, anything/anybody else in life that I didn't immediately resonate with. ...I don't recommend anyone do this, by the way - just, if you do find yourself doing this for whatever reason, there's something to learn here. *edit* Forgot about this: the 2nd place in the tournament I mentioned was a Taokaka main. Kind of ironic now that I think about it.
Honestly when I pick a character I just look at the health chart and pick the character with the lowest health in the game. Most of the time its the pixie character. Ive literally picked the lowest health character in a fighting game by accident 5 times nows. So now I just do it intentionally. Btw for context they were pichu for smash ultimate, Wrastor for Rivals of Aether, Chipp for guilty gear strive, Taokaka for Blazblue, and Seth for Undernight.
My favorite main is Baiken from Guilty Gear and I play with her for three reasons: 1- I like Samurais, 2- She's so badass that she fights with just one arm, 3- She's hot. Simply.
I generally like Swiss Army knife characters who have options to deal with anything who are more offensive. Chipp zanuff has those things but has taught me to embrace my inner crackhead. I have gone through two controllers already simple because the bumpers keep getting worn down lol

Husbando/Waifu: Android 21. There's no timeline in which she doesn't feature on my team. Friend: Potemkin. He's been a homie for ages, overall my favorite fighting game character of all time, but in Strive I'm just let down by his level compared to others. Ally: Honda. He's been a great gateway into SF6 but the simplicity of his gameplan has me questioning if I'll stick to him lately. Mercenary: I spend a little time learning Ky in every version of Guilty Gear that I play, but only to have a solid all-arounder character to fall back on. Enemy: Juri. I ain't ever playing her. The Feet People have spoiled her forever.

Very interesting! I actually have been using a similar system too, but with different names/categories. I categorize the characters using this tier list: Main, secondary, counter-pick squad, casual random-select, and not for me. For me, the only "waifu" status character is Taki from SoulCalibur. I played her in every single version of Soul Blade/Calibur, and I always liked everything about her in every version. Guilty Gear's Baiken is very close but... I have mixed feelings TBH, especially in GGST. GGXX Baiken is the one I really like (I actually never even considered maining anyone else in any version of GGXX), and while I really didn't like her visual "upgrade" in GGXrd, I still liked her because she mostly played similar to GGXX, so she was still my main (but I did main Sol, Jam, and Johnny before her, since she was a very late addition). In GGST though... I'm strongly considering dropping her, since her play style isn't really close to how she played in GGXX/GGXrd, and I don't like how she looks too much... Yes, despite the PP I'm using... I also don't like tether. It kinda fits thematically, Baiken always used ropes in some form in her moveset, but mechanically I find it doesn't really fit the original Baiken aesthetic. I guess for me Baiken is my waifu in GGXX, a friend in GGXrd, and an ally in GGST. I like your naming system though, so I'm gonna steal that (especially the "mercenaries" tier lol). BTW, wouldn't Kokonoe be a mercenary for you too? Or would you consider her an enemy that you just had to play?
I'll just say that my KOF XV team is Shermie, B. Jenet & Sylvie Paula Paula. So, it's two waifus and one weird goth pop girlie that has captured my heart because of her gameplay. And I use mods to give all of them better costumes lol.
It's kinda funny actually. I dropped Axl for Asuka when he released because I swore to myself that if they ever added Asuka that I'd main him. Peak waifu material, basically. I now have to deal with the fact that I struggle ENDLESSLY with the Asuka v. Axl matchup, but I can't be mad about it because Axl is just such a homie that I could never slander his name. We spent so much time together, man, through thick and thin. I can't do a friend dirty like that.
Honestly, I played a LOT of bbtag (like multiple thousands of hours) and I eventually just settled on 2 mid tiers with servicable assists. As long as your team isn't devoid of synergy or a reliable gameplan (which generally doesn't happen in modern fighters) You can probably play the characters you like, just be aware theres probably a better partner 🤫
Friend: Manon in SF6 is holding me down while I'm waiting for my SF Husbando Akuma. Incredibly fun and rewarding, and while she's typically seen as one of the weaker characters at the moment, I can't help but stick with her and disagree because she's this interesting mix of my two favorite archetypes. She'd easily be waifu gang if she had any history being as fun as she is now, but as it stands she's just the homie for now. Comparing her to the other characters I main, I definitely have more of a type than I thought too.
Me and Axl, we chillin. I like to think I have no enemies, but certain Mays and Rams make me wish I had a mashable 5P Or a DP that didn't suck so much.
The enemy part is so true lmao, sometime you just despise a character even if they are not good. Now if they are good then I will pray for your sanity.
I love potemkin, actually one of my favourite fictional characters, but I simply cant bring myself to play him in any game other than strive. His gameplay in AC+R and Xrd is just so slow that I can't get behind playing him over Order-Sol (my beloved) and Normie-Sol.
In Strive, Ky is my enemy. I don't think the people maining him are bad, I'm sure he means well in the GG lore, but their combination is revolting to me. I fight every Ky with a vengeance.

I'd hesitate to say that there's nothing that the devs could do to stop me from playing , but i would put squigly (skullgirls) and manon (sf6) into that waifu tier. then every character i play would fall into friend or ally (more likely friend), and then every big body grappler being tossed into enemy. not necessarily because i hate playing against them, but because i dont want to have to struggle to get in, and also big body grapplers tend to be hyper masculine and im not into that shit at all

Actual have transition from the husbando tier to the ally tier, in MK I have been a unapologetic Scorpion player, been playing him since MK vs DC. I was playing nothing but him until MK 11 which changed somethings and I wasn't having any of it. I moved over to other characters but always kept him in the back for matchups I really didn't enjoy
I played Hyde in Uni simply because I thought his rekka was funny. Several years later, yeah it’s still a funny move. Also his fireball is dumb and I love it.

As a child I discovered my first fighting game in a local convenience store and was immediately intrigued. I pulled the only quarter I had out of my pocket and took to the streets to test my mettle. Unfortunately, it was over quickly.
I picked a fighter with cool hair and he was tossed into a jungle location in Brazil to battle a green beast. The monster kept flying through the air and smashing into my character’s face, wounding him severely. With no idea how to play or what any of the buttons did, there was little hope of defending myself. The brute finished the fight by jumping up on my warrior and furiously biting into his throat. The blood loss was too much. My avatar, a brave military man, was defeated.
At the time I had no words to describe the pain I felt. But I now know- I was damn salty. And the anger of that moment has never left me.

I've had a full romantic comedy with I-no in Strive. When me and my waifu Ram got in a rut, I-no was the friend I hung out with to make her jealous. Slowly though, I-no taught me things, things I had never considered before. What a bad match-up looks like. How to wake up with out an invincible reversal. It's weird that when I started back in Xrd SIGN, Zato was my enemy. Now in Strive I fucking love chilling out and playing Zato while intoxicated; he climbed all the way from Enemy to Friend.
The magic of playing Zato while not sober is that it feels like you are working with Eddie towards a common goal, because you're definitively not going to be able to control that little fucker while intoxicated. A lot of times you're trying to do something, but then Eddie does something unexpected and you're like "I'll follow Eddie's lead and see what happens."

At a distance, alot of players will send Eddie after you to bait a reaction, but when they do, alot of characters can dash 2k on reaction to kill Eddie b4 he does anything.
Sometimes, Zato players will get tricky and have Eddie cross you up so his attacks push you into Zato. FD it. If you time your FD to only block Eddie, you'll be pushed far enough towards zato to throw punish him between attacks.
Zatos aerials are pretty strong and his glide is great defensively. Super jump at him to maintain positional advantage.
Eddie will take damage for Zato, effectively making whatever zato does in neutral free. (I think its "Oppose" that has Eddie standing up waiting to counterattack) Eddie does however tend to have long startups and he does not provide throw invulnerability. So, run up throw is a great way to break an average Zato players defensive and make them respect you, even in neutral often times.

Finding out this dynamic in team games is super fun for me. Building a team around your faves with characters you don’t like in ways that *actually* help you preform better with your faves is super rewarding
For team fighters you can just think of the necessary parts of the team shell as your friend's circle that you're not a part of but you still see when you hang out with them. So you get along with them as acquaintances even if they're not the homie you made plans with originally.
I picked my main, because I understood and relate with him on a personal level, Leo Whitefang. The guilt and shame of mistakes made in the past, however not being punished by people, law, nor God. Was I worthy being spared ? Of course not, yet here I am.
I do think this list is missing the character you personally relate to or identify with, or want to be your identifier to other players, as fighting games are still very social and who you pick is part of that expression if it's important to you. I've conceited that most players seem to have "attraction" mainly as the relation to a character they have a strong personal attachment to which is the kind of loyalist player mentioned here, but for those who pick a character based on their lore, look, vibe, personality, etc., because it's how they personally want to be represented, I see you.

I love happy chaos as a character, because he's the guilty gear version of my favorite villian from JoJo, Funny Valentine. Even his pink color is a reference to Funny Valentine and his ability D4C. His gameplay has a menacing quality that I love. I don't love characters like him normally either, he's just one of the few long range character I just took too. His solid close up game should be acknowledged as well.
My WF is absolutely May, she was the reason that is started playing GG and fighting games overall because of her design, I really loved that she was a pirate with a huge anchor as a weapon, It was hilarious. I had tried MK and Kof, I enjoyed the games, but they weren't my cup of tea, It wasn't until I played GG The Missing Link that I really wanted to learn about fighting games, because of the uniqueness and personality of each character and May wasn't the exception. I had a really good time playing her in every mainline GG and fell in love with the character, She had become my favorite fighting game character of all time.
There's only 1 relationship I have with my mains; Mentally Insane Hyper Fixation. Characters represent me and I want to represent my characters in return.
My personal list for that would be for GG: Xrd, GG: Strive, UniClr, MBTL and BBCF
Waifu: Orie the Potato Saint (UniClr)
Friend: Ram (Strive and Xrd), Millia (Strive), Saber (MBTL), Hakumen (BBCF), Ino (Strive - before S2 Nago buffs)
Ally: Ky (Strive), Sol (Xrd and Strive), Anji (Strive)
Merc: Also Ky (Strive) and also Ramlethal (Strive) (when I started with them), Elphelt (kinda) (Xrd)
Enemy: Bridget (Strive), Jacko (Strive), pre-winter patch Nago (Strive obv), Ino (Strive - after S2 Nago buffs), May (current Strive version)
Now for the reasonings:
- Ramlethal: started with her as merc and used to hate her when I was a casual in Strive. But when Nago got buffed at the start of season 2 I felt like the Ino Nago MU just felt borderline unwinnable and with HC being HC and people telling me to swap, I swapped to Ramlethal, first to have someone with an even MU spread and coz I like good buttons. Little did I know that I would grow very fond of Ramlethal and get slightly emotionally attached to her. She might have been part of the reason I enjoy dark skinned waifus now, but who knows its the chicken and egg problem. And I do not care about that rn, all I know is that I think Ram looks very cute and I really really enjoy her playstyle - in both Strive and Xrd for different reasons. I probably enjoy her Xrd version more on a gameplay and visual basis, coz I think her wild look is more creative compared to her much cleaner uniform look, but I like both for different reasons. I would be on the fence saying shes my waifu tho, coz I really just think of her as that friend that pulls you through hard times, coz shes definitely did. But maybe one day the brainrot will have reached that point.
- Millia: I first picked her up coz I liked the idea of setplaying people to death from whiffpunishes. And I really really do like that. Plus fit blondes are my type, so Millia definitely checks that for me. But I generally prefer her more gameplay wise. The only reason I dont actually main her is because I cannot mentally handle matchups such as Millia Leo and Millia May. Never played nor playing her into Goldlewis either, I have some self respect as a human being. So for that reason she is only a friend I take out to have fun with (and I really do).
- Saber: you probably thing shes a waifu pick but no I literally went on mizuumi and looked for the footsies char and she popped up. the fact shes a blonde knight that also happens to be a dork is just an extra cherry on top. I still prefer Mordred tho ADD HER TO MELTY YOU COWARDS AT FPAN!!! (jk ily but please I want her soooo baaaaad in an fg).
- Hakumen (BBCF): hehehe 4C and parry go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Jokes aside not having to block is the best worst feeling to have. But it feels like Im on crack whenever I play him so I have to restrain myself...and his execution for his damaging routes really does hurt my hands so hes only a friend I take out a couple times a month.
- Ino: my old flame in Strive...and now my biggest enemy in Strive. All caused by one...man.... season 2 buffs Nago....He took her away from me....or maybe it was just her growing pains and the fact she lost H stroke plus frames....either way I despise the character now and I am NEVER playing her again.
- Ky: ok so this mfer has a funny story about him. I actually didnt really hate Ky ever coz I played Ram and Ram Ky is Ram favored..ish. So I literally never rly thought much of him....but the Ky mains downplayed him so soooo soooooo baaaaad, that at one point I just snapped and picked up Ky out of spite to win a tournament with him. That sadly didnt happen yet, but I did have a fuckton of fun learning him. I also became DEADLY aware of how busted stun dipper rrc is. And I also understand how easy it is to brainrot with Ky. Its somehow easier than with Ram and probably easier than with Nago and Bridget. But...supposing you keep the brainrot at bay, you will have a blast on Ky. He has all the tools a footsies character can have, with albeit short and committal pressure. But the pressure isnt that hard to work around, if anything its enjoyable with the rest of the tools he has. He really feels like a perfect character for me gameplay wise. I just dont rly think much of Ky, hes cool and his theme slaps but Im rly not a Ky simp. He is hot tho, I will die on that hill for my homies who would offer an arm for their king.
- Orie: literally just female Ky with a rapier thats more of a dork than Saber. (I will anger Uni fans with this ik but lemme have this I know shes not rly anything like Ky gameplay wise trust me I know!) I loved her in UniClr and I was so devastated I could not play that game with anyone BUT we are getting Uni 2 now LETS FUCKING GO FINALLY I WILL BE ABLE TO PLAY ORIE ONLINE TO MY DEATH I WILL ACTUALLY BECOME THE STRONGEST ORIE IN EMEA ONCE IT DROPS YOU CANNOT STOP ME!!!
- Sol: like him in both versions, not enough to commit to main him in either version. I dont have the sauce to make him look busted and Im fine with that. Hes still fun.
- Anji: played him after he got buffed to relevancy, hes one of the most fun Ive had playing casuals with people. The serotonin hit from landing a parry super is a drug I cannot stop not trying to do run up parry I WILL DO IT STOP PRESSING ON WAKEUP I NEED SOMEONE TO CUT ME OFF!!!. He is omega fun, defo top 5 casuals char pick. Also kinda hard but hella sick combo routes. Actual dustloops my mind is being exploded!
- Elphelt: started playing her so I could unblockable ppl to death. Shes fun her jD is a button among mankind but Im not degenerate enough to keep with her. Ram is my go to in Xrd and where my heart will forever lie. She IS the better sister, SUCK IT UP ELPHELT MAINS!
- Bridget: Great design, Great story (if we take Strive story as a different entity from ACPR story, otherwise still valid attempt Daisuke keep it up) and...I can ignore her theme, some people like it. But since she released...shes been the BIGGEST frustration to me as a player EVER. I can say that, she has made me more angry than Jacko and S1 HC COMBINED. She is, by far, the only character that I WILL say that she is truly an anyone can cook with character that loses only due to her mains own lack of ability. Jesus christ she is probably the most HATE Ive ever harbored for a character gameplay wise. She is to me what HC is to most people. But I could go on and on and still have shit to throw and this character gameplay wise. Just know that if I ever catch you saying that Bridget Ram is a very winning matchup for Ramlethal, its on sight. Learn the fucking MU and STOP WAKING UP WITH DP EVERY TIME WHEN YOU DIE FOR IT EVERY TIME ASWELL!!!
- Jacko: annoying voice, dont mind her char design, gameplay wise why her 2K and 2D...I cannot comprehend Daisuke....But regardless, I think that I just kinda hate Jacko overall more so than her gameplay aspect. Shes just lame af to me, but thats aight if you like this char then more power to you. Just know that two wrongs doesnt make a right! Also her theme is ear infestation.
- Nago (before winter patch nerfs): single handedly forced me to swap mains and made Hotashi think that Bridget is not that good by being captal B BROKEN AS ALL FUCK. I dont hate Nago outside gameplay tho, so post nerfs I dont hate him...that much. And most Nago mains Ive met are chill, theres only one of every hundred that shouts racial slurs in lobby after losing, which is honestly really good for strive standards.
- May: S DOLPHIN SHOULD NOT BE MINUS FUCKING THREE WHAT WERE YOU THINKING ARCSYS FUCK EVERY MAY MAIN OUT THERE YOUR ASS IS CARRIED AND I HATE THAT I WIN NEARLY EVERY TIME I FACE A MAY COZ RAM MAY IS A EVEN MU!!!!!! AND STOP DOWNPLAYING HER SLASH, YOU THE GOAT BUT STOP!!!!

This video is surprisingly topical for me because as someone who is strongly motivated by character choices, not having a character I mesh with makes it hard for me to want to play the game at all. I'm realizing with SF6 as much as I thought I knew who I wanted to play none of the characters make me willing to push through the personal gripes I have with the game. Where as with guilty gear I could deal with many many MANY dumb things since I think Baiken is that dope of a character to play in legit any GG game
I wouldn't say I have any husbando/waifu characters, but I see my characters as more like favorite siblings and I play as if I'm kind of helping them unlock their dormant power to protect themselves from the evil blue guy with the gun, a lot of characters I don't like enough to main but I do love a lot of characters besides my mains, like faust, love that man, he's so chaotic but also just a really chill guy, like you kick his ass and he asks if *you're* ok, like what a guy fr.
GGST Sin has made himself that Husbando character for me. He's the best of what I love in not just fighting games, but games in general. And now that he's legitimately kinda OP I feel like playing him like I did has really paid off.
Hmm, if I were to go by these requirements, I think outta all the games I've played, only 1 fits your criteria with waifu/husbandos (personally like to call it character loyalty 😅), and that's johnny. I just like the way he looks and his moves. Vergil can be here as well.
Everyone is sort of based on "is this character like ____. In my case, dudley/cody. They are those kind of characters I can relate to in my own little twisted world 😅.
I don't think I have any mercenaries other than doctor doom, but with team games, especially the 2v2s, I really like the idea of seeing what wacky ideas can I come up with. In mvci, you would probably see me trying to run 3 different dante teams. I'm already plotting when it comes to project L, with yasuo 😈

I feel like this significantly understates what you're bringing as a player: you mention that your choices are sometimes influenced by wanting to play tournaments, but I feel like that's a whole-ass dimension of this.
In Blazblue CF, I played Izayoi and Mai. Izayoi was definitely my Friend, but I ended up playing a lot more Mai (Ally) because I didn't have the time to get gud - "big buttons go brrr" is very much my happy place, so I just scumbagged my way to domination of my locals.

Most of my character choices have been Friends but I had a problem of locking myself into specific play styles. So by the time Granblue came out I played Gran as an Ally, but Cagliostro is my waifu. I will never drop her for showing me that I can play characters that aren't grapplers or shotos. I have a debt to the game now that I must repay.

Like, if you looked at all your past mains in fighting games over the years, what would be the common theme between all those characters? What could be the reasons we prefer one characters' look/gameplay over the others?
This is one way to think about it, but I prefer to think about it not in terms of "degrees of liking", but in terms of "what reason did I pick up this character?"

Like the character's aesthetic AND their gameplay (The Perfect Fit)
Like the character's aesthetic, but NOT their gameplay (The Waifu - yes, I'm using the same term you used but differently)
Like the character's gameplay but NOT their aesthetic (The "Only a Main")
Be generally indifferent to the character, but pocket them or include them on teams for pure value and coverage (The Right Tool for the Right Job)
Hate the character's aesthetic and gameplay, but play them out of sheer spite (The "Yes this is as dumb as it looks")
And each of these will pick up or put down characters for different reasons. Like, the "Only a Main" player might drop their character for a lower-tier one if they get a buff that meets their standard of "good enough." The player who plays a character they hate CAN be a meta-slave, but they can also be the capeless hero who saves their suffering brethren from the oppression of a degenerate menace. Etc Etc.
For me, one "Perfect Fit" is I-no (Strive), a Waifu would be Baiken (Xrd), "Only a Main" would be Voldo (Soul Calibur), and my examples for the last two wouldn't be fighting games, but I've certainly done my fair share of hate-playing in DotA and other games, lol...
I picked my main because of one simple reason i love to piss people off and make them angry in game of course and look cool while doing so, i had no choice but to play Happy Chaos i love him hes my best friend and ill continue to play him to make everyone online as mad as possibly and have fun and look cool while doing so

I've had a couple characters get close to that top layer but I always can at least be excited by a new thing enough to where I'm very often willing to at least try other characters either as a break, for fun or to shore up holes.

I main Happy Chaos and Asuka because they are cool even in the lore of the game. And people hate to fight them which gives me an upper hand too.

2) ram, kenshi, janemba and sabito
3) Raven (T6), mui (fighterZ) and eren black
4) ssb vegito
5) Potemkin and anyone with super armor
Marisa, I like big body bruiser archetype, so Super Broly, Kagura from BB, Kliff from GGXX, all of them are Husbando/Waifu tier for me, my e-bikes tend to be the Pixie characters the Millias and Taos of the world, I wish the player would stop slamming like 5 energy drinks and running at me thinking I won’t just push buttons, also the pixie play style dose take nerves of steel at times so full respect.
1. Husbando- Potemkin//Guilty Gear series - He's a 50/50 crowd pleaser that's just fun to watch and play, I spend WAY too much time learning matchup knowledge and specifics just because its so satisfying to win with the one character, and originally I wanted him as a secondary (I'm just bad at playing as Sol)
2. Friend- Jin Kazama//Tekken series and Dee Jay in SF4 & SF6 - I try to use these characters as versatile as I can because I really, really like them for their character and aesthetics, and there's just a seemingly endless way to play as them in a variety of approaches and strats. So much so that I REALLY want them at my Husbando stat, but I admit, I am not the best at playing them to their maximized capability. Maybe one day when I become more aware of how to read frame data and play them at their best potential.
3. Allies- Ryu and Akuma//Street Fighter appearences - These two are EVERYWHERE, and they are pretty easy to pickup. There's times where I want to drop them because I'd think I've out grown them, but when I see a new title or a game I'm not entirely familiar with, these are my Go-To since I have the fundamentals down at least.
4. Mercenary- Jax Briggs//MK series or Devil Jin//TT2 - I'm not the biggest fan of NRS titles, and I find Devil Jin extremely enabling and easier to use than regular Jin, but if I really want a win or want to make someone shut up, these are the guys I hire to insure a chance at victory.
5. Enemy- Almost anyone in SSBU??, Noob Saibot from MK, Ky Kiske in GG - mostly any character I don't play or respect is because of how easy it is for them to use certain tools, and they optimize them in a way that I find not fair or respectable for me personally. I never play these characters, I just selected them because when I'd pick them a random select, I found them to be super easy, almost as if I was warranted to cheat, and I wouldn't put anymore time in studying how to play them, more than I would learn how to counter their gameplans and strats. This goes for any character that usually has lightning fast kicks or sweeps, have spammable zoner tools, annoying "death by 1000 cuts" safe play style, its just not my preference. I know when I'm beat, but I will study on how to overcome them for the next rematch.

On SF6 waifi is Manon, my besties are Honda, Chun, Jamie....other than that, everyone is a mercenary, and JP my enemy.
In Strive, May is waifu, Pot is my bestie, everyone else is my mercenary, and Happy, and Asuka my enemies.
This is kind of my mentality I really like myself about playing fighting games and playing a bunch of fighting games. I get to have this relationship with playing and enjoying the games and characters in said fighting games. It's something that just keeps me motivated to keep playing fighting games as you sometimes get to just develop relationship with these fictional characters as if they were real people be it good or bad. That could be said about any characters in media, but with fighting games it really feels more personalized, be it 1v1 or tag or team fighters.
Honestly, I would say for the majority of fighting games I have a lot of friend type characters I would consider though some I could consider Waifu's or husbando's but I like to keep friends but also stay pretty loyal to them but also still have other characters around as well.
For friends it would be: Leo Whitefang (Strive), Blake Belladona, Yang Xiao Long, Es, Bang, Kagura Yu, (BBTAG, BBCF, P4AU), Katalina, Charlotta, Gran, (GBFV), Trunks (DBFZ), Charlotte (Samshow), Arthur (UMvC3), Marisa, Manon (SF6), Lars, Alisa (Tekken 7), Hitomi, Helena (DOA), TMNT (Injustice), Empoleon (Pokken), Orie (Undernight), and don't even get me started on KOF but to mention a few would be Betty, King, Maxima and the Boi Terry.
But that just to name a "few" characters that I consider that I vibe with or in the friend tier for myself. There are more games I've played that I would list but these are just some of the games that I enjoy and like playing or recently played and honestly a lot of my female cast of friends of characters that I would consider Waifu's like Es or even Katalina just name few choices.
My favorite dynamic is 2v2 games where it's your beloved waifu or husbando, and like, ted from accounting. Just another character there to make the person you actually WANT to play work.
Still keeping an eye on Strive, hoping they finally add something that actually says "main" to me.

Quick background: I started with World Warrior (Ryu main, Blanka main in Turbo), played various things, had a 15 year break from fighting games and came back into the genre with Skullgirls playing solo Peacock (~800 hours). My group decides to play BlazBlue since BBCPEX came out on steam. /end background story.
So I see Taokaka and think "this character looks so fun; she's quirky and she moves everywhere!". I play her for ~2 months and can only get bodied hard with her, so I look up tech for this character and see that I need to learn a ton of different conversions (at the time daunting to me) or learn microdashes (honestly can't reliably press 66 to save my life anyway, 2-button dash in Skullgirls carried me hard).
This was low-key devastating to me: up till now I always could play the character I was invested in and compete with my local group. Since I'm a cooperative guy, I play Hakumen instead, since I can at least play Street Fighter with him. Playing Hakumen made me feel incredibly stupid however; I felt like I didn't "get" anime games at all, with me mostly poking and defensively counterattacking people. Some months into this, I play a match against Terumi, and their intro sequence chat tips me off to the story connection between Hakumen and Jin. I hated Jin. Like, a lot. He wasn't hard to fight, but his story, personality, goals in life, dumb-ass fighting style.
I just hated playing BlazBlue at that point, it was something I did out of duty, nothing else. But since I couldn't get anything out of the character there wasn't anything else to think about than playing the game. Started getting good at applying mind games to counters; labbed conversions off of every combination of magatama resources on my own. We held an open european netplay tournament, even placed third in it (and was the one to put 2nd in losers). Started labbing ToDs, but never used them as BBCF came out on steam (I switch characters in a version change out of principle, so I can learn something new). Played through all the BB story modes.
After almost 2 years of playing him, I don't necessarily like Hakumen now, but I appreciate him. We went through a hard time together, and I'll always remember that. And I love counter moves now. It also made it a lot easier to adapt to any game where I couldn't find an immediately likeable character - heck, anything/anybody else in life that I didn't immediately resonate with.
...I don't recommend anyone do this, by the way - just, if you do find yourself doing this for whatever reason, there's something to learn here.

Forgot about this: the 2nd place in the tournament I mentioned was a Taokaka main. Kind of ironic now that I think about it.
Honestly when I pick a character I just look at the health chart and pick the character with the lowest health in the game. Most of the time its the pixie character.
Ive literally picked the lowest health character in a fighting game by accident 5 times nows. So now I just do it intentionally.
Btw for context they were pichu for smash ultimate, Wrastor for Rivals of Aether, Chipp for guilty gear strive, Taokaka for Blazblue, and Seth for Undernight.
My favorite main is Baiken from Guilty Gear and I play with her for three reasons: 1- I like Samurais, 2- She's so badass that she fights with just one arm, 3- She's hot. Simply.
I generally like Swiss Army knife characters who have options to deal with anything who are more offensive. Chipp zanuff has those things but has taught me to embrace my inner crackhead. I have gone through two controllers already simple because the bumpers keep getting worn down lol
playing sol is hell sometimes, but i push through it because he is literally me and sol would do his very best to kick some ass
for basically every fighting game I played after I played pot in strive I just picked a grappler I liked and stuck with em. Although I haven't been playing fighting games for that long

Husbando/Waifu: Android 21. There's no timeline in which she doesn't feature on my team.
Friend: Potemkin. He's been a homie for ages, overall my favorite fighting game character of all time, but in Strive I'm just let down by his level compared to others.
Ally: Honda. He's been a great gateway into SF6 but the simplicity of his gameplan has me questioning if I'll stick to him lately.
Mercenary: I spend a little time learning Ky in every version of Guilty Gear that I play, but only to have a solid all-arounder character to fall back on.
Enemy: Juri. I ain't ever playing her. The Feet People have spoiled her forever.

Very interesting! I actually have been using a similar system too, but with different names/categories. I categorize the characters using this tier list: Main, secondary, counter-pick squad, casual random-select, and not for me.
For me, the only "waifu" status character is Taki from SoulCalibur. I played her in every single version of Soul Blade/Calibur, and I always liked everything about her in every version.
Guilty Gear's Baiken is very close but... I have mixed feelings TBH, especially in GGST. GGXX Baiken is the one I really like (I actually never even considered maining anyone else in any version of GGXX), and while I really didn't like her visual "upgrade" in GGXrd, I still liked her because she mostly played similar to GGXX, so she was still my main (but I did main Sol, Jam, and Johnny before her, since she was a very late addition). In GGST though... I'm strongly considering dropping her, since her play style isn't really close to how she played in GGXX/GGXrd, and I don't like how she looks too much... Yes, despite the PP I'm using...
I also don't like tether. It kinda fits thematically, Baiken always used ropes in some form in her moveset, but mechanically I find it doesn't really fit the original Baiken aesthetic.
I guess for me Baiken is my waifu in GGXX, a friend in GGXrd, and an ally in GGST.

It's kinda funny actually. I dropped Axl for Asuka when he released because I swore to myself that if they ever added Asuka that I'd main him. Peak waifu material, basically.
I now have to deal with the fact that I struggle ENDLESSLY with the Asuka v. Axl matchup, but I can't be mad about it because Axl is just such a homie that I could never slander his name. We spent so much time together, man, through thick and thin. I can't do a friend dirty like that.
Whenever a character is arrogant/rude it's straight in the "enemy" category for me. So Juri, Jaime, Vega etc

Honestly, I played a LOT of bbtag (like multiple thousands of hours) and I eventually just settled on 2 mid tiers with servicable assists. As long as your team isn't devoid of synergy or a reliable gameplan (which generally doesn't happen in modern fighters) You can probably play the characters you like, just be aware theres probably a better partner 🤫
Friend: Manon in SF6 is holding me down while I'm waiting for my SF Husbando Akuma. Incredibly fun and rewarding, and while she's typically seen as one of the weaker characters at the moment, I can't help but stick with her and disagree because she's this interesting mix of my two favorite archetypes. She'd easily be waifu gang if she had any history being as fun as she is now, but as it stands she's just the homie for now.
Comparing her to the other characters I main, I definitely have more of a type than I thought too.

I love potemkin, actually one of my favourite fictional characters, but I simply cant bring myself to play him in any game other than strive. His gameplay in AC+R and Xrd is just so slow that I can't get behind playing him over Order-Sol (my beloved) and Normie-Sol.

In Strive, Ky is my enemy. I don't think the people maining him are bad, I'm sure he means well in the GG lore, but their combination is revolting to me. I fight every Ky with a vengeance.

I remember a tier list on Reddit shows you either wanted to be the character or to f**k the character.
I'd hesitate to say that there's nothing that the devs could do to stop me from playing , but i would put squigly (skullgirls) and manon (sf6) into that waifu tier. then every character i play would fall into friend or ally (more likely friend), and then every big body grappler being tossed into enemy. not necessarily because i hate playing against them, but because i dont want to have to struggle to get in, and also big body grapplers tend to be hyper masculine and im not into that shit at all
I get hit by GL i EXPLODE but i look at Baiken and i smile, i get hit by Nago i EXPLODE but i look at Baiken i smile, Baiken is the only reason i still play this cursed game
Actual have transition from the husbando tier to the ally tier, in MK I have been a unapologetic Scorpion player, been playing him since MK vs DC. I was playing nothing but him until MK 11 which changed somethings and I wasn't having any of it. I moved over to other characters but always kept him in the back for matchups I really didn't enjoy
And thats why I-no is the best, most interesting, most fun, coolest hat character in the entirety of fighting game history
