  • Sometimes you just want to turn something quick and easy. Maybe you're just starting out and don't have much wood. This is just a scrap of a branch from Cherry Plum. Perfect little project for a beginner or someone that just doesn't have a lot of time at the moment. Maybe a quick gift?

Thank you, Mike! I have shown it in past videos but I prefer not to. I use a cloth rag with the lathe spinning about 700 rpm. Some folks don't think a rag is safe and like to let me know that so I don't show it very often. As long as you gather the rag up tight so nothing is hanging out to get caught, I feel it is safe for me to use it as a method to buff.

I totally agree. My hands-on arts are jewelry, Multimedia on varying bases, and installation projects.
      LOL...I don't throw anything away.
If I can get a good deal I'll buy 'scrap' leather online. Because it's too small for their use, it's just a step above trash, but for me it's good. Pieces 3" x 10", 4" x 5", 6" x 7", etc. in cool colors are great. I can cut them down in strips, stars, circles, or leave them as they are.
I also pick stuff up off the street. Not trash, ok even trash, but that I put in the bin. Most of what I pick up to use are pieces of wood. I use those in installation art, but I repurpose lots of things.
An Open Mind is the best tool in the box.

Hi Phil. I have watched this video a few times now. I think it would be fair to say that 'out of little things beauty can grow'. Look at this, a little filler piece that, in the hands of a true artist, ends up as a delightful little bowl. The grain is quite nice & the finish is 'spot on' for this piece. Tiny it is but huge in its finished form in your hands. Thanks for the chance to see your skills applied to such a small, almost insignificant, piece of Cherry Plum. Cheers mate, Don from South Aust.

    Hi Phil
Nice little project. Happy for you it was not a bearing issue. That would have been a real pain!
Just having gone through some serious lathe issues (too long of a story to get in to) - ended buying a new lathe. Of course many of my bits and pieces don't fit, so now building new jigs etc - not much turning, but now I can do a better job making jamb chucks, glue blocks etc - so that is good. Love all of your work and really look forward to watching and "Learning" Thanks for all you do. Stay safe! Dennis

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop The new lathe is awesome. No doubt a lot more lathe than my talent level! Going to take some practice to learn how to use and get the feel of all this power. Thank you, Denny! Most pieces I turn are dry so warping or splitting aren't much of a problem. If I do turn a wet one, I just let it do what it's going to do.

"I thougth I was losing a bearing..." Famous last words Phil! Once again, a beautiful piece! Perhaps you should check your banana bowl to see if that is where you left your bearing? :-) Be safe and stay healthy my friend!

That is some mighty pretty wood. I like the darker color and of coarse the bark, it always looks good. A question, please. Was this bowl dry?

I’ve watched dozens of your videos and appreciate them. They help with my own turnings. I’m curious, as I’m sure you’ve been asked before. What do you do with , I’m sure, many hundreds of you beautiful products?

Thanks, Roger! For now I collect them. Maybe one day I will have a helper and then I can sell, pack and ship a few. 😊
