J.C. Leyendecker at the Haggin Museum

- Few people today recognize the name Joseph Christian Leyendecker and yet he was arguably this nation’s most popular commercial artist during the first four decades of the 20th century. His paintings helped sell everything from men’s clothing to breakfast cereal and he helped define the modern magazine cover.
Haggin Museum houses the largest public collection of original art works by the “Golden Age” illustrator, Joseph Christian Leyendecker. The Leyendecker Gallery displays more than 40 pieces of original works including sketches, studies, and finished paintings. In addition, a collection of photographs, letters and other personal items provide a rare, intimate look into his life.

Perhaps a biography into JC Leyenddecker. His early retirement, his obscurity, his distroyed and unarchieved collection, his homosexuality, his influence and competition, and where all this lead him to the end of his life.
Footnote: JC Leyenddecker was almost and forgotten. Perhaps confused for other artist. Until the late 70's or 80's. Where american illustration was documented. Did he even re-emerge. His connection to early american brands. Early consumerism through illustration. Late 90's, the LGBTQIA+ community made rediscoveries of their own artists. In telling their story. Which open JC Leyenddecker to a broader audience.

You should have a museum store on your website , because all the people who cannot travel for many reasons , might be interested to buy books of the art works of the Haggin Museum . And I mean open to International orders please .

A great artist
He is one of my favorite classic illustrators. His brother Frank was a good illustrator too but killed himself at a young age.
We are fortunate to have a couple of sketches by Frank Leyendecker in our collection.
You can see how his mentee, Norman Rockwell, was influenced by his work.
