    Around two years ago, I saw J.C. Leyendecker’s art for the first time; it really motivated me to do art. I learned a lot; thanks for the video!

    It looks to me like Leyendecker is using a fairly limited palette here. Maybe just Prussian blue, yellow ochre, Venetian red, and white.
    Compare this with his early Saturday Evening Post covers, where due to the cost of each additional colour print layer, he paints in only black, white, and red - but manages to create a convincing full-colour effect through judicious use of his single hue.
    It looks like he worked fairly quickly and systematically. A lot ( - but not all - ) of those rhythmic patterns you notice in the shadows appear as if he's just hatched them in during the brush drawing stage and decided to leave them. They're convincing enough as is.
    His plan for the model's skin seems to be: Yellow ochre and white for the local colour (turmeric complexion), with more ochre added for warm mid-tones, and a little blue added for the cool mid-tones. He shifts the local hue with Venetian red around the ears, cheeks, and nose, and this is how he prevents the subject from looking anemic.
    The shadow colour looks like a brown made form Venetian red, yellow ochre, and a little Prussian blue.
    The hair base colour looks like just yellow ochre straight from the tube. And so do the model's irises.
    The lightest lights of the sailor suit are also heavily tinted with yellow ochre, with _warm shadows_ made from more ochre, a dab Prussian blue, and white. This gives the impression of the model standing in a golden light, such as a sunset. And that also helps to further contextualize (and excuse) the turmeric complexion.

    My god this is amazing timing, I was planning on drawing my fave character in his style so this is unbelievably helpful! I also go crazy for paintings where you can see the touch of the artist so I obviously look to leyendecker a lot 😂 the underpainting technique was genius. I love your videos, you’re seriously talented!! It turned out great 🙏🙏🙏

    to check the values you can use a saturation layer and fill it in with grey to quickly turn your work into black and white, and compare your work to the reference to see where you can match the original better! in the original you can see that leyendecker used a peachy orange to offset the creamy light yellow highlight on the forehead, and then contrasted it slightly at the temple with a slight darker shade than you used in the study. the edges that he used to highlight the corners where the planes of the face meet are a lighter color and that gives the light a crisper feel. overall i think you did a beautiful job at this master study! thank you for the video, it was really informative and insightful! i look forward to seeing more of your videos

      @@SrishCreates pro tip: saturation layer tends to not give accurate values, it's better to use a color layer :)

    Really well done study! Thank you for not making it look easy. I appreciated seeing not just the final study but the video of the whole process. As for the style label, I would not consider his work neither Art Nuovo nor Art Deco - just the wider label of “Illustrative”.

    Leyendecker should be thanking me. The only reason he was able to come up with the whole idea of turning the male physique into a sex symbol was because I ran into him one day and I gave him the finger guns greeting as we passed in the street. I deserve royalties, damn it!
    I've always liked Leyendecker's work, but never knew who he was. His Saturday Evening Post works were brilliant (only Rockwell surpassed him on those). But I have to confess, he's not my favourite from the time. I'm an unabashed John Waterhouse and an Edmond Leighton (especially the latter) fan of the artists from back then.

    • @SrishCreates
      @SrishCreates  Před rokem +1

      Honestly I would pay such good money to see that happen in real time, to see finger guns be the inspiration behind his career ahahaha!
      Ahhhh Waterhouse is up there as one of my faves too! There is so much inspiration to be had from art history, it's unreal!!
