This movie was a piece of art. Huge fan of Stephen king but the mini series was comical, it was more true to the book yes but it was not scary. Kubricks version truly messes with your mind and somehow makes you feel like you are isolated along with Danny and Wendy.

I hate to admit it but you are absolutely spot on. No one can touch my man Stevie for thrills, chills and highway spills. Although based completely on the book it was something you had to READ, not watch in a film. Some stories don't translate well onscreen and this was one of 'em. Sorry Stevie but you need to acknowledge that Kubrick did honor to your story not dishonor it. Relent! Repent! Lest that Gregorian Dies Irae chant knock you back!😎😀

I agree. The mini-series was mediocre. I thought Steven Weber did pretty good as Jack Torrence, in his own right. In fact, he was the best part of the movie. The setting was pretty cool too. However, as you said, most of it was silly rather than scary. I still say The Shining: Mini-series was better than the Salem's Lot remake.

This is actually a religious text in Russian or Old Church Slavonic IIRC. I have it somewhere but cannot find it right now. It's funny how Kubrick kept using religious music for weird effects. Another Penderecki piece in "The Shining" is _Als Jakob erwachte_ (aka. _The Awakening of Jacob_ ) which is based on Genesis 28:16-17 and is dedicated by the composer to Prince Rainier III of Monaco! So much for corpses in bathtubs. And of course in _2001_ Kubrick used "Kyrie" from Ligeti's _Requiem_ for the monolith with the chorus singing, extremely slowly, "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison".

Something sad about it though, that all the people, such as my grandparents and alike, who would go to balls and enjoy this genre of music are no longer, they lived their lives and made their choices, made their mistakes, loved, feared, the lot, and now no more. Both their once existence and passing seems to echo in such beautiful music. An era where people of educated (and even working) class would dress the part for their occasions, and act appropriately, and respect one another, and at a time just after what was a terrible war, and just before what was to become another one, everyone would truly make the most of every living joyous moment, be grateful for everything they had, and look after their loved ones as though it was their last day. This serves as a reminder of my gratitude to have been a descendant of them people, who I unfortunately never had the chance and pleasure to meet. A lot of basic values that now seem to be lost

Well, Kubrick actually did commission an original soundtrack for "2001: A Space Odyssey" which you might be able to find here on CZcams. (Fair warning -- it's not bad but not as good as the pieces which Kubrick chose.) In the end, Kubrick decided that he preferred the classical pieces even though he originally had not intended them to be part of the score -- but sadly, he neglected to inform the composer that he would not be using the commissioned soundtrack and so the film's premiere was a devastating blow.

@reidmason2551 Kubrick really had a habit of playing nasty tricks on people, didn't he? He pulled a similar stunt with George C. Scott on the set of "Dr. Strangelove." Scott (unlike Slim Pickens) was aware that Kubrick was filming a comedy but didn't want his character to be as over the top as Kubrick did. Kubrick asked Scott to do his scenes twice -- the first time Kubrick's way with Kubrick telling Scott it was just an exercise and the second time the way Scott wanted it. Scott didn't find out until later that Kubrick had lied to him and used the over the top versions in the final print. Scott vowed never to work with Kubrick again, and he never did.

I hold the soundtrack as the "voice" of the Overlook Hotel.... as an example, the opening theme is the Hotel calling out to Jack & Danny... beckoning them... yearning to consume them... so, the Overlook Hotel is THE main antagonist whom manipulates Mr. Torrance via his denial of his Shine/psychic abilities, etc....normal individuals, void of the Shine, are unintentionally brought & bound in death to it.... the lingering malevolent being/lifeforce/spirit born of the past atrocities embodied in the enigmatic hotel... forever... and ever....and.... ever.

Kubrick took what was a fairly straightforward haunted house story and made something so fucking terrifying and unsettling. Not once do I feel comfortable watching the shining and I must have seen it hundreds of times.

Well...they did the same with Psycho and it seems to be doing pretty well. However, the mini-series for The Shining is closer to the book. Remember...King did not like this movie version.

Stephen King didn't think that Kubrick knew what he was doing in making a horror movie. Stephen King doesn't know everything like he thinks he does. Stephen King likes to ramble on and on and on and on in his storytelling, leaving little to the imagination in his many works. That's not the only way to do horror.

Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, were great in the Shining ,yes, but I also think Scatman Crothers( who played Dick Hallorann ) deserves mention.
He played, in my opinion, an hilarious portrayal of night guard ,Turkle, in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest( also starring Nicholson).

My all time favorite horror film. An impeccable film, absolutely chilling and I think what makes it so chilling is how it is more about the traumatic effects of horror as opposed to jump scares. It feels so disturbing because it possesses an unnerving air of reality to it as if it could happen to anyone, in any given situation, at any time. I found this film to be absolutely horrifying because it's also dealing with a father who is a demented alcoholic with a murderous rage for his family. And what could be more chilling than that? The book was also quite terrifying as well.
