In today’s video I visit Francine Britton, Educator, Author, and founder of Active Learning Alliance, and now a mostly retired expat living in Puerto Vallarta for less than $1,000 per month. We’ll visit her apartment that’s just half a block from the beach and tour some of her favorite spots in the Zona Romantica neighborhood where she lives. Where I live, it costs over $1,000 a month for a tiny little studio apartment, and have to pay utilities.
I take the city bus in California and bring one of those fold up shopping carts on the bus with me. Do you have those there you can buy?

@@francinebritton5939 Hola Francine, obviously every person has a little bit different variation on the experience with living in Mexico, whether they are Mexican or expatriate gringos. One of the things that determines the different experiences is what a person’s budget is that they live on each month, and whether they are working or not.
. I work freelance in movie & TV production in the US and Mexico, and it’s been many many of trying to get a permanent work visa.
they just provide temporary visas, but it’s like an ongoing thing.
Of course I can make at least five times more money per day in the US but I don’t look at it that way. I love Mexico and my income in Mexico provides a comfortably modest lifestyle.
While living in Mazatlan I would always take buses or walk or bicycle. For my big weekly trip to the supermarket I would take a bus to go there but treat myself to a taxi for the ride back since I would have a lot of supplies.
I enjoy videos like this but too much of it seems to be like a big sales pitch for people to come live in Puerto Vallarta. In the big picture I think it drives prices up and pushes locals further out to the edges in Puerto Vallarta.
For me it’s been very hard to see what happened to San Miguel de Allende over the past 20 years.
A house that was for sale for $35,000.20 years ago is now priced at $300,000 and they haven’t done any improvement or repairs to it it’s still the same fixer-upper. And sadly, the average housekeeper or gardener still make a very low wage, which ironically is what provides such an affordable lifestyle for retired Gringos to bring their money from outside the country. It’s good for Mexico economy but certainly doesn’t improve the chances of that same HouseKeeper ever enjoying the same lifestyle that we enjoy when we’re in Mexico.

@@wrshannon74 You are incorrect. I lived in a less expensive apartment when I moved in 2011. At that time I paid $300 USD all inclusive. I rented this apartment in June of 2019. This is still possible in 2022. Rudy Blanco from the video who runs Beaches Please rental company has helped many people find apartments between $450 and $700 per month with large spaces (not a studio like I have) being the higher end. Please know that I would never tell 700,000 plus viewers anything that is not accurate or true. That would be deceptive. Rudy has helped many people relocate here. A Facebook page you might like to view in depth is Affordable Vallarta Yearly Rentals to see for yourself. We are not experiencing the inflation or high cost of day to day living that the USA. Short term or seasonal rentals will always be more than renting yearly. Coming on vacation or for a month or two will be at least double during high season winter months. Everything I stated cost wise is 💯 true and accurate ... In fact my food expenses have gone down in 2022.

I lived there 3 months last year and i would not live there permanently. People, go stay in México at least 6 months and ten decide. I have been in México for the last 15 months. It's not all roses

@organic artistic Hiya. Puerto Vallarta is cheaper than Tulum and is more as a town than a tourist place (that is the feel anyway) so it is a good optión. Best luck
tulum has become overhyped and the market there is overheated. now with the cartel violence, I fear tulum's days are numbered. a shame- it used to be so charming and sleepy!

As an American expat living overseas for more than 20 years, I would recommend to any American contemplating moving abroad to do as much research about the country where they plan to relocate to as they can and if it's feasible, they should pay an extended visit to that country also but not to stay in a hotel like an ordinary tourist; you won't learn much about your host country if you do that. I recommend an AirBNB-type stay so that you can get an idea how the locals live and how much it costs to shop for essentials. It will also give you an idea as to whether you can adapt to the local lifestyle and/or what you may need to give up. Keep an open mind, be as flexible as you can and it always helps to learn the local language. Best of luck!

@@kinhason46 Never been to the Philippines but you raise an important point; as Americans, we should not expect to find everything in our new homes that we had in the States. We may not find certain foods, the same level of amenities and certain creature comforts. I'm not saying that the rest of the world doesn't have most of what there is in America but to give you an example, certain online streaming services like Hulu are not available outside the United States. Since I live in Greece, I am 7 hours ahead of the US which means that when I want to watch events like the Super Bowl, I have to stay up literally all night long. There will be a certain amount of adjustment that expats need to make which is why I say it's not for everyone and as you said, you need to shop around.
Some good advice. I have been in México for te past 15 months just before quaranrine. México can be great but in many áreas i get treated like n ATm machine. Local police are corrupt especially in tourist zones. My take so far is it's good...until You get sick or get into trouble somwhow with police. Been extorted 3 times by police in Quintana Roo.

@@utecastronoova863 I had a similar experience years ago when I was in Juarez and I ran a yellow light. A cop pulled me over and wanted to write me a ticket but I asked him, "can't we just settle this here?" So he asks me how much money I have on me and I tell him I have 50 bucks (I had more but as with the IRS, you never declare everything). So he tell me to give that to him and sent me on my way. It's the only time I ever had to bribe a cop!
I really enjoyed watching this. I live in Canada and with winter approaching, I appreciate seeing such a beautiful climate. The colours of the homes, the art and the landscape are just amazing.

The Zona Romantica is the most expensive part of town and also the busiest and noisiest. You can save a ton of pesos backing away from the beachfront and up into Las Glorias and such districts and you will have a more tranquil experience. The beaches are only 10 minutes away and far less crowded and you will meet more actual Mexicans

I’m moving to Puerto Vallarta with my family in less than 6 months. Me and four other family members, I’m really excited for it, the next months are probably going to be the slowest of my life because I can’t wait to get there. Everything we value in life is better there. We’ve visited a few times and the fact that we can afford a house just a few minutes walk away from the Malecón is like a dream come true so we’re pulling the trigger on it. I’m just hoping I meet someone who is friendly and bilingual so I can learn the language quickly.
Awesome man. I live in utah. But travel to puerto vallarta once or twice a year. Or visit my friend who lives in guadalajara and drive to puerto vallarta n see witness the restaurants bars facing the ocean is priceless
Love this view of someone’s life who isn’t rich or young living well on a small income outside of the USA when it would be impossible to live as well on same income in the USA
Hi Sonia, This is the budget I choose to live on in Mexico not my income. Having this budget allows me to continue to travel, eat out often, and splurge when I am back visiting friends and family in the USA and in the UK. However, that being said - many people do live on this solely and look for apartments that are below what I pay. It is all possible and doable - you just need to integrate and live with the locals (which I absolutely love).

Puerto Vallarta playa de los muertos is a cespool especially when rainy season hits. My advice as someone who has been here te last 15 months is yo learn spanish and live here for 6 months at least before decidí ng to move. It's not all toses

Thanks Zoe. It's a great retirement these past 11 years. I moved here when I was 59 and have not regretted the decision. Weather and people are wonderful.
This video was so fun to watch and I recognize many places. I wish this had a love button instead of a like. My husband and I owned a condo in PV for 20 years. It was in the Condominios Playa Dorada building. Right on the beach on Playa Camarones. It was right next door to the Hotel Rosita. We would come to Vallarta at least 2 times a year. We absolutely love it there. The people are lovely and it's just a great town. Unfortunately my husband had a stroke so we ended up selling and haven't been back. We both miss it so much! I noticed a few comments about how dangerous it is there. That is not true. We always felt safe. We're from the Chicago area and the crime rate is through the roof. PV is hands down, much much safer.

A way to adapt to the country is learning their language, even if it's not necessary in a particular town. It's a form of respect for the locals and it opens up another world knowing a different language, so it's beneficial.
I am a 64 years old Canadian and thinking to come to Puerto Vallarta permanently, so I like yours all documentary that you made in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, and it helps me to mature my thinking to be an expat in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, specially that you introduced some lady expets from US, any way thank you very much.
You are very welcome. I am starting my 13th year of retirement in Mexico and have not regretted my decision in all this time. I hope that you get to visit and decide if it's a good option for you. I have many Canadian friends here as well.

Puerto Vallarta is beautiful! Remember one thing is a very tourist city, in most parts of Mexico you can live on $700 monthly.
This is very, very true. Many people even live here on that. The apartments above my office rent for between $300 and $350 USD and some of the tenants there (on this perfect street) have been there over a decade.

My wife and I live in a mountain house in Japan for $150 a month and a 3 bedroom beach condo in southern Thailand for $700 a month, and we travel back and forth with our 2 kids. We are both digital nomads in our late 40's.

And while $1000 a month is not my income, living this well and wanting for nothing on this budget in Mexico allows me to travel, save money, and not think twice about treating myself to dinners out, theatre, travel in Mexico and trips to other countries, cruises, etc. None of this would I be able to do on my retirement income in the USA.
Oh wow! Is it fairly common for someone in Japan to be able to rent a place for $150 a month? How might someone find such a deal. I am currently researching the living costs for a retired Japanese woman and had no idea it could be so affordable there.
@@lavendersky4324 This is very common in the country side. You need to choose where in Japan you want to live. If you need the city life you can still find small areas 10-20 minutes outside of town with low rent homes. Most towns give you ¥1 million yen towards renovation. All of these ¥15,000 homes will need some renovations. My advice is if you are Japanese then you should buy the house with a loan which means 10% down on about $35k but I would get the loan to cover the renovations for 30 year terms. I would get a studio apartment just outside of the town you like for a few months which cost about $400 a month. This would allow you to show your face and look at 20+ homes to get a feel for things. You need to introduce yourself to everyone you can. There is no real estate agent for these cheap homes. You need to introduce yourself to many different people. Buy a case of chocolate or something and give out gifts to people who are helpful.
I absolutely loved this video. This woman is extremely fortunate to have found such an ideal location! I cannot believe that there are many such ideal places left for expats. I'm planning to move to Puerto Vallarta in the next year. I am praying I'll be as lucky as she is!!

Yes, there are actually many places like mine (especially from now until October when the seasonal people return) available long term in my price range. However, this are in very nice Mexican hacienda houses as pictured on the video. It will not be in a modern, multi-story condo building that has just been built with every American convenience. It is a wonderful retirement and while my budget is very small and I truly want for nothing! However it is important to note: it is not my income and the savings by living on this budget allows me to travel and when I can (hopefully soon) take cruises. I really enjoy being 70 in Mexico.

When I was in Puerto Vallarta I went to look at some low rental properties. And most of the places I saw, had expats living in apartments I'd say the size of a hotel room for close to US$500 a month. So she is real lucky.
Check all the Facebook PV rental pages, you will see many apartments like mine or better at reasonable prices.

This style of video really fills a niche.
Most videos look at new places through the eyes of a newcomer or a tourist and not someone who has lived there for some time. It's so good to see the routines and preferences of a longer term resident.
Also, most of the videos that do talk to longer-term residents just have sit-down interviews without slides or local video. But the way that you walk around with her on her daily routines and show her preferred places is fantastic.
Now I have a good idea of what it's like to live there. Keep these videos coming!

@@jazminmillan2982 Hi Jazmin - a notary here is a different job - they are similar in status to a judge and have the full authority of the court to make decisions. A job like you have in the USA would be a reclosing services specialists. They make about $3.00 to $3.50 per hour. Wages are very low here, compared to the USA. You would also need to be a permanent resident and acquire working papers. You can google more specifics on this. Also Jim will be doing more informative videos in the future, addressing this. I hope this info helps you a bit.
Been living here in Vallarta for 6 years now. Can be tough for a young expat at times, but see a lot more youth moving here. Such a special place.

@@lrodd247 honestly, since there are SO MANY retirees (not a bad thing whatsoever, I have many wonderful older friends) anybody under 40 is definitely considered a young expat. I’m in my 20’s and when i first got here I was shocked whenever I met anybody my age that was living here and so were other locals (Mexicans). They would always assume I was on vacation because almost exclusively expat retirees lived here. Although times have changed a little bit over 6 years which is welcoming.

My first experience living in Mexico is Playas de Tijuana, for what I have seen in this video a world apart from PV, in so many ways .

@@francinebritton5939 I would so love it, I know! Also 71 and wishing I could escape. 2 problems: rescue cats - but worse, I have foreign- earned retirement + social security. The Americans restrict me from going anywhere except the country I retired from - or they will withhold my social security altogether. Germany would also tax my retirement if not living there or US. Punishment.
With Mexico taxing all expat incomes, it sounds like I would be in worse financial shape if I was to leave 🥺
I cannot afford to keep a place here so I could go to Puerta Vallarta for 6 months either.

You do however, need to work an ethical, real estate agent and have a legal rental contract. Wow! Great content...always great to see what life is line for expat. I believe in always having a Plan B in life...just in case Plan A disappears. One question though...does one keep their money in an American bank and use the ATM in say...Spain? Or would you move your money to local bank?🤔
@@mallorygraf8574, I keep my money in a bank in the USA and use an ATM card. Some long-term expats have accounts in their home country and in Mexico both, and they transfer large amounts of money when the rates are good.
