(John Sheppard was “Informator choristarum” at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1543 and is listed as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1552. It is assumed that this anthem was composed during the reign of Edward VI at some time after 1549, when the Book of Common Prayer was published. The text is from St John 13)
I give you a new commandment: that ye love one another e'en as I have loved you.
By this all men shall know that ye are my disciples.

Sheppard is a composer from the Renaissance period that I know shamefully little about and what a gem this is! Were you asking yourselves: "Now David Crook will LOVE this; where is he?" Well, here he is.... all AOS groan again... "oh no, you-know-who's back..."
