WCW Mayhem was released on Playstation 1, N64 and GameBoy Color. Getting released after the incredible AKI WCW games that were released on Nintendo 64, WCW Mayhem had a lot to live up.
The roster was good, featuring guys like Bret Hart, Goldberg, Sting, Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Lex Luger. Mayhem also featured backstage areas for the first time in a 3D wrestling game and also, there was a lot more commentary in WCW Mayhem than other WCW / WWF games that game before it. There was a lot to like about WCW Mayhem but when it came to the actual gameplay and having a wrestling match, it still fell short of it's predecessors such as WCW World Tour and WCW / NWO Revenge.
This video looks at every version of WCW Mayhem that was released.

I remember Chris Jericho being in this game after he left WCW and then appearing in WWF WrestleMania 2000 a month later. The game IMO was super slow, and some of the special moves, wrestlers wouldn’t even sell them. It wasn’t until I got Smackdown, that I knew Mayhem wasn’t where it was at. Awesome that you finally did a video on this. Absolutely LOVED Mayhem. It was my first wrasslin' game and it hold a special place in my heart. It may be clunky compared to games today, and was outpaced and outclassed by WWF games at the time, but its still a solid experience. The commentary track alone was had absolute gold lines in it, including Tony and Bobby bickering, Tony plugging a product called "Chork" which apparently was a combination between chicken and pork or Heenan one liners like saying the wrestler has it all backwards and that his nose runs and his feet smell. The create-a-wrestler feature was probably its highlight, with its suite serving as the template for original wrestlers that I make still to this day. Yes, its not that great even by standards at the time, but it satisfied the pallate.

It definitely was worse than I remembered. I loved it as a kid and played it so many for hours with my brother. When Bill Goldberg came to WWE the first time after WCW was done, he had a signing at Fiesta Supermarket in the north Houston area off I-45. My brother and I begged my parents to take us and some friends to it where we sat in the sun for like 3 hours to meet him. We had him sign the game manual for WCW mayhem and backstage assault. It was absolutely worth the wait for us(I was around 12 and my brother was around 7). When we pulled out the game manuals Goldberg seemed surprised to see them. The best part was my brother asking Goldberg questions and Goldberg responded to my brother like he was the most important fan at the time. As an adult I know he wasn't the best wrestler and his matches were really predictable but as a kid we looked up to him like he was the best. The only thing I wish I could have done is meet sting and get him to sign the disk.

I've still got this game I've not played it for many years though but I used to play this religiously in the 90s when I used to rent it from the video store I eventually bought as a teenager but I loved this when I was a kid I would play on this or attitude. I never got a chance to play N64 games until the mid 2000 as I bought my own 64 console then and I played the hell out of wcw revenge and no mercy ...thanks for the great memories there and hope you get better soon dude

  • @Real3doPlayer

I still play this game on my N64, it is better then most people remember. True players know that you can’t hit someone with a weapon more then 3 times or you get an automatic reversal

  • @scottmoreau5630

I remember playing Nitro, Thunder, this game and Backstage assault on the PlayStation. This was the best of the bunch, but I was always jealous when I went over to my cousin’s house and player WWF or WCW games on his N64. Just so much more fun. Still at the time, Mayhem was a fun game, especially the backstage options.

According to THQ producer Sanders Keel on recent podcast, EA scooped the WCW license when they were winning the Monday Night Wars. Two weeks later THQ got the WWF license. And soon after the Monday Night Wars shifted and the WWF was on top. Sanders and THQ and AKI were disappointed and WCW was a little easier to work with, but was what it was. After No Mercy AKI wanted to work on the PS2 but THQ already had Yuke's for that. EA poached AKI and they started working on WCW Mayhem 2 which became Def Jam Vendetta after Vince bought WCW.
