Another option instead of open shelves for displaying things: glass door cabinets. We have high ceilings and put in glass door cabinets high up in the difficult to reach part. There we can display nice china pieces, collectibles etc without them getting dusty. We added in-cabinet puck lights that both highlight the pieces and add some nice unobtrusive light source when we have dinner guests.

Yes to the slim shaker cabinets...we need more love ❤️ for the slim shaker.
I have open shelving over a boos block butcher island on the opposite side of kitchen. It is a nice touch as you stated.

Nice !! We did the same with frosted glass doors and lighting inside under each shelf . Love it !!
