  • The MacMaster returns to Whitby to Review A Fish and Chip Shop. After his last visit where he told Whitby to Hang Your Head in Shame after reviewing some disgraceful Fish & Chips at The FIsherman's Wife and ending up causing quite a controversy with the Locals of Whitby and outrage with the people of Yorkshire. The review even ended up in the local press. A year has passed and it's time to return even though The MacMaster was told he was not welcome back in the North Yorkshire Seaside Town of Whitby and never to come back. Whitby this is your last chance to heal the shame and embarrassment. Heads up I also got caught filming!!!!!

    This place is absolutely disgusting.
Regardless of the food quality, those snotty girls gossiping about you in the background, researching and harassing a paying customer sat eating his meal!!!
How about putting some more effort into making sure everything is up to standard, then you wouldn't have to worry yourselves about people filming.
I cannot believe she had the absolute cheek to utter the words "Who are you!?"
Disgraceful. The owners and staff themselves should be ashamed.
    Vile people.

Credit to you mate for this mentality. However if they were truly proud of their produce and service, there would be absolutely nothing to worry about here, and people with cameras would be welcomed with open arms.
The fear of getting told off for a bad review should be a daily driver towards excellence, and a reason to provide top tier service at all times, not an excuse to behave in this way.
For me its just snobbery, and and an attempt to put themselves on a pedestal.
      Not my cup of tea.
I like a business who appreciates and values every customer who chooses to spend their hard earned cash in that establishment.
But still, awesome video, keep it up! 😃

@@gunnerafc4443 I'm on the road a lot and tend to grab a bite whenever wherever i can. And now post covid, i am firm in the belief that many, many food outlets are on the claw back, if you get what i mean. And something i'm increasingly finding, like in this video, are the add ons. Recently in a cafe in London, ordered a filled bap. Was asked if i'd like salad in the bap (?) and some crisps on the side. Why not, yes please. Finished up, went to pay and the £5 bap turned into £9.50 i kid you not. The 'crisps on the side' turned out to be a handful of chips (£3) and the salad consisted of a lettuce leaf and a slice of watery tomato (£1.50). I'm a straight talker and told the owner what i thought as if he cared. Now i'm making my own food and saving an absolute fortune.

Superb video. You've found a gem there. Those fish and chips looked gorgeous! 10 times better than that other place you went to 'The Fishermans Wife'. It just goes to show the so called packed out best place to eat is not the best placee at all. There always happens to be another place just round the corner that is so much better but no one realises! So thanks for making us aware of Mister Chips, its brilliant. On a separate note, just for future reference, in my opinion, had you had been honest up front and said you were the MacMaster and I do vlogs of food reviews I reckon she would have let you carry on filming. But on this occasion it turned out all good anyway in the end. Cheers Mr MacMaster. 👍.

When we last visited Whitby about 10 years ago we ate in a big new fish and chip restaurant assuming the cod was locally caught. But was disappointed to be told by the server that all their fish was came from Iceland and was delivered to them frozen and none of their fish was caught in Whitby. The size of the fish on the plate looked massive but it had the thickest covering of batter I have ever seen, which grossly misrepresented the size of the fish inside. Very misleading and very expensive. So, you cannot assume all the fish they are serving in Whitby is locally caught.

Whitby holds a special place in my heart (as I'm sure it does for many other Northerners), having gone for holidays there as a young lad, and always love going back there. It can be, however, a bit of a tourist trap. As you rightly say, Lee, The Magpie is very expensive. I definitely recommend The Magpie, but if there's a queue out the door (as there often is), I certainly wouldn't wait.
I'll give Mr Chips 10/10, based on the meal you had. You just can't beat cod. Lovely crunch of the batter, chips looked spot on, as do the sauces. I'd prefer my bread pre-buttered, but won't take any marks off for that. The meal was priccey, but again, it's Whitby, and you expect to pay more in a touristy area. Lovely waitress, and great venue. Spot on, Whitby! 👍

My experience with Whitby's Fish & Chips was underwhelming when I was there for a week (on business) in the late 1980s. I tried 4 or 5 and remember being disappointed and miffed that the town operated as a tourist trap, allowing quality to be forsaken in favour of making a fast buck from out-of-town customers. Glad to see that Whitby has redeemed itself with what looked and sounded like (crispy!) superb fish & chips. I'd have given it 10/10., my only hesitation being its pricey cost. I know of outstanding fish & chips in affluent North London for more or less the same cost, with one fish & chips eatery in Edgware providing the best fish & chips I've encountered of late for £2 or £3 less than your total.

As an ex chippy owner until retirement in blackpool area , can i say that was a very fair review overall ,there are many grease holes around the country .. One of my pet hates was un eyed spuds & on spuds every chippy surch s for good potatoe s on a year around basis, good size spuds are hard to come by , on fish my local fish market was fleetwood but the quality was rubbish and I used to have scottish fish sent down for both the flavour & quality plus a good size, Whilst since retirement prices have gone up greatly I found that place overpriced for what you got and i noticed large fish £13-95 ?????? , simple pea s all come dried in a bag , soak overnight , keep em whole or mush them up a little , the curry also comes in a bag with fruit or without , and even the batter again comes in a bag but the owner adds his art to the mix, my favorite oil was frymax veg oil kind of upper quality over some of the cheaper smokie oils . The owning of a chippy is not an easy life how ever much the chippy hours are open the back prep area is double that time or more and on the day your closed its change the oil day and major pans cleaning. If they have 5 star ratings that at least says they are clean which is a good start. When in a strange area sneak around the back door -- is it clean and tidy , if not walk away fast .

Unfortunately it is not legal to film wherever you want. In private property, and that includes restaurants, you need the permission of the property owner to film. You are OK in public places but with certain caveats, for example you must not harass people and you can be on thin ice if you film places that could be regarded as potential targets for terrorism, and filming children might lay you open to all sorts of accusations.

If you genuinely don't know a customer and you see them chatting to a phone (no crime in that), aside from being nosy you'd have to be remarkably effective at searching online, or incredibly lucky, to almost instantly discover their identity (what did she do, type in 'Bloke filming on phone' and seconds later Lee's CZcams channel popped up? 'Bingo!').

I loved it where you told her you were from America. I was watching it while having my tea and it made me laugh. Only Cristi l criticism I had was it took quite a long time to get into the actual chip shop and we were wondering whether you were going to get mugged and didn't actually get there ;) (only kidding). Glad you enjoyed the chips :)

Everyone goes to the Magpie once, then if they have any sense never again. Liked the Quayside pre covid then was dissapointed post covid. There was a time when i would drive to Whitby just for fish n Chips. Now i can get the same mediocrity on my door step.

Mate all fish and chips everywhere is the same now. Honestly I think it's all just frozen ready chips and frozen fish, all fried in cheap vegetable oil. Nothing fresh, no dripping; just all ultra processed stoge.

well done for going back to Whitby, given what you said about the comments after your previous visit, you were more than right to say it how it was before, that's what you do, review, and clearly from the negative comments made toward you, shows to me how ignorant many people are, if it's good or bad then accept it, and quite clearly many couldn't take a negative review

Getting death threats for having your own opinion on food you bought out of your own money is plain stupidity people have issues these days i swear. I like how you didn't let any of that stop you from going back to Whitby but i agree with you in that video the fish really didn't look good at all.

Yes....Royal Fisheries is 100% the best in Whitby. I was in Whitby when they were filming The Grand Tour episode....caused mayhem when they kept opening the bridge constantly.

Great video Lee. I was more nervous and I was watching on my telly. Got to admire you for going back to whitby. I don't think I could have done. Always welcome your opinion because you say it like it is. Food looked good definitely a 10. You do however have to work on the american accent lol.

Looked nice to be fair, my only reservations would be that I dont like to see 'staff' sat around doing nothing and also worrying about customers filming and being impartial with their opinions by filming events, to me, it shows a distinct lack of confidence in ones products and service. Its not somewhere I would use on principal alone.
Perhaps the staff didnt want the owners to see that the staff sit around chatting all day.

Great Vlog , agree with you regarding the magpie , we have always used the one just up from the magpie and next to the amusements , I like it because you can have the cod with skin on with I prefer 👍🏻 as for the one you visited ( MR chips ) it looked a nice sized portion for a medium 👍🏻 and for info the train is a class 37 diesel👍🏻 I’m a retired railway man 😂😂
