    When I was young, I had a small talent in music. But I could not continue to music for several reasons. I sometimes felt sad that I couldn’t continue to music. However, I find a person who expresses the music that I only paint in my head. In fact, it’s more beautiful. I have no more regrets in music. Right now, I’m the happiest person in the world!

    Okay. The tempo shift from 4:37 to 4:40 gets me every time... his 7/16 goes to a slow 4/4, and his bass note rate consistently goes from 16ths in 7/16 to approximately quintuples in 4/4. On top of that, it's a stupid sick lick on bass - there are a ton in the video, and I know the video was sped up from a slower, manageable tempo - but that one's a gem. Genius craft, solid execution, incredible musical vision. Favorited and subscribed.

      Not well enough to perform on it, but I understand it well enough. I'm a bassoonist, and a drummer/percussionist before that.

    • @DrooBazooka
      @DrooBazooka Před 7 lety +42

      Runaspism: okay, this'll take a bit, but here's the best way I can explain it. From when JC sings "Love you..." at 4:16, there are basically three feels (except for the last three bars, which I'll explain at the end.)
      A. 5/16 feel; basically a mix-meter swing of 3+2.
      B. 4/16 feel; straight ahead, up-tempo feel.
      C. 7/16 feel; slowest beat rate of 4+3.
      In all of these feels, the 16th (or fast 8th, depending on your interpretation) is the common denominator of pulse; for reference, it's about 510 beats/minute. JC does a great job of masking the pulse by swinging the two slower feels (4+3, and 3+2), but it's there none-the-less. The full metric layout is this:
      ||: *3+3(5/16), 2(4/16), | 6(5/16), 2(4/16), |16(7/16) :|| **3(7/16), Glass shatter at 5:03.
      * - the first 3 groups of 5/16 take place under the "love you" lyric, and sounds unmetered. The second time through this layout is where the bass solo occurs (4:38-4:40), also 3 groups of 5/16, plus an additional three notes on the front end.
      ** - final three groups of 7/16 occur from 5:01 to 5:03; the first group and a half feels like 4+3, but the last group and a half breaks differently. Overall, there are 21 extra pulses before the glass shatters.
      Good luck.
      One further note: most of the bass licks in Close To You take this one to school, but it's still impressive playing and writing.
      Cheers JC.

      thank you! well explained, that's insane... I knew there were some fives and maybe sevens happening, but I thought they were polyrhythms, and I was having trouble reconciling the tempo changes.

So it's hard to get me excited musically because I grew up listening to some high level musicians, singers and arrangers.
    I have a short list of young music artists who in my opinion are special and can make me smile when I listen to their musical talent and creativity. Bruno Mars, Adele, Dirty Loops and Snarky Puppy are 4.

    "P.Y.T." was written by *James Ingram* and Quincy Jones. The title actually came from another song Michael Jackson wrote with Greg Phillinganes that was intended for the "Thriller" album. The song wasn't chosen but James and Q wrote another song with the same title that was used.
    Having said all of this, this is just bananas. This is what genius looks like. There are no other words. I also note some lyrical "changes" to MJ's recording here. They aren't bothersome at all, though, and if this weren't drowning in perfection the way it is, they might be.

      ***** - I love that version too. I get why they didn't include it on "Thriller" but it's a great tune. Frankly, everything Greg Phillinganes does is great so no surprise there. Turns out BlackSTREET used the same chords as the original version of "PYT" and came up with "Joy" - the second single off their first album. MJ even got writing credit on it. That's a great tune too!

    • @esanders
      @esanders Před 9 lety

      +Nostril Jacker I never thought about the connection between the two songs. I knew MJ had a writing credit on "Joy" but I figured he actually worked on it separately...There's also a rumor that he contributed background vocals to that track!

      @Nostaljack Před 9 lety +1

    Jacob is incredible on so many levels, and I've been a fan for a while now.
    However, this tune just didn't do it for me, for some reason. It feels over-embellished, with too much going on at all times, and no time to breathe. This for me kills build up and emotion. It feels like watching gymnastics when I'd like to see dancing.
    In any case, this video is super entertaining and wowing, and it must have taken countless hours to put together. I just know Jacob can create tear-jerking work, and I look forward to that moment.

    Not surprising this disturbs or frightens people; the level of accomplishment displayed on multiple instruments (and obviously other tech/production) is unprecedented. After the first play, I was actually surprised it was only 5min long, it's so dense, so many ideas going on, one right after the other, blended. I am amazed, no question. Whether or not it is supposed to be music to your ears is perhaps not the question.

    Just came back around to melt my face off again. Those bass tones are thick as caramels. Dude modulates any more and those competing dominant scales are gonna overlap, tear open a wormhole, and summon something. Dude could hear you describe him as a genius, and he’d demonstrate how your voice slowed down while saying the word “genius” at precisely a 10,000ths of its exact spoken bpm would produce individual clicks that tap out his name in an alphanumeric sequence which happens to be the native tongue of his alien ancestors. We should protect and nurture this one.
