Dear Simon, please make an old man very happy and ask Alan if he would like to be interviewed by VG.
Smash a like on this comment and the above video if you would like Alan to be interviewed by VG.
I think Vaughn said in a previous video that he has already asked Alan and been turned down, Alan saying he’s talked about DM enough.
@@RB-bd5tz that's a real shame, I would even settle for Alan just discussing synths and other electronic music from the past, kind of like he did in that one CZcams video called "Soundcheck with Alan Wilder". At least I think that was what it was called. He was played a small bit of a song and then talked about it. It was wonderful to watch.
Edit: the video I mentioned is called "Alan Wilder about Depeche Mode and other things" If anyone hasn't seen it yet.
@Vaughn: is this true?
@@RB-bd5tz it was about Gareth Jones, not Alan
i wish we can see Alan one more time, just please! @Vaughn George
Most awesome episode ever. Please try and get Alan on the show for a 48 hour marathon geek talk episode... :-)
Cheers Dennis!! I'd love to interview Alan someday !! VG :-)
@@VaughnGeorge If you manage to do that, you could retire on the clicks... :)
He does have the contact now 😉 it's just a question of time
Yes, the elusive Alan session and interview is getting a few steps closer!
is one of the things i wish more in my life, an actual interwiew with the maestro Wilder :)!
Wow, I have this Emax and didnt know exactly what I have. Being a drummer and a writer, I didnt realize the piece of history I have, as I also have an Ensoniq SQ1. I had actually thought about selling them, but not sure after watching this video.
Please get Simon back! His knowledge not only on the Max but DM and his friendship with Alan Wilder is crazy, He's an amazing guy for sure.
Those sounds bring me right back to 1988. I was 16 and was at the Rose Bowl. I can still see my high school sweetheart’s tears rolling down her cheeks when they played “Stripped”. Fast forward to December, my wife and I saw DM Memento Mori in downtown Los Angeles. What an incredible performance. I wish I would’ve slowed down and enjoyed the 80’s more.
Also worth noting that Ensoniq brought excellent low cost samplers, Skinny Puppy made innovative use of those
This makes me want to go back to watch Alan play so effortlessly on the 101 video Poetry in motion like no other before or since then
Ll Kk Thank you for the tip about Hamburg. I start listening at night then boom it is 2 am Discovered DM 2 1/2 years ago when Enjoy the Silence popped up among a bunch of political videos. It was the one with the “girls” on the big screen. I couldn’t help but switch. So glad I did. I’m hooked on the Alan Wilder years.
The best part of this video is how Simon appears at the very start. Vaughn should have said "oh you were there ? Didn't see you" 😁
I had the Emax SE :D And the manual is so funny. There is some warning like "dont drop emax from plane onto penguins" . What I love with these old samplers is that the aliasing of samples with added reverb afterwards sounds so good. edit: lol he just mentioned this :)
Amazing when you think back to how advanced this was 30 years ago. Yes, there's definitely something that has been lost in the switch to software, sonically but also visually!
I've got a few E-MU Emax SE models they have a lot of hidden Easter eggs, from their labels, software and hidden stuff printed on the circuit boards. Love those sounds they put out with the analog filters. I didn't keep the model II I had. I do have a bunch of others from Emulator II, EIII and a bunch of E & ESI models too. The keybed is nice on the Emax Model 1 or 1000 series, and a trick if you ever need an extra key for a repair is they use the same ones as the Kawai K1 keyboard, much easier to find in a pinch.
I Really enjoyed this one . We should get a petition going to get alan wilder on your show . The man is a God in my book.
Don't let him leave! We need more.
Great video! Been watching a bunch and all are great! Thanks!
What do we need to do to get Alan on your show?
ALAN IF YOU ARE READING THIS...YOU DONT HAVE TO TALK ABOUT DEPECHE MODE...LETS TALK ABOUT SYNTHS AND MUSIC Pleeease 🙂
These machines are classics - both in the good sense and the old car sense. Every year that passes the components age, some become unobtainable, and things fail. Some older machines are kept working through the care and feeding of individuals and groups that are interested in the nostalgia. I think we should enjoy these past artifacts like you are, while they still exist, and for a magical short while there is often a time when they are both obtainable and affordable by the next generation that will care for them.
When you said SCSI drive, I almost spit out my coffee...Most people don't know what Iomega drives were...I still use mine...great stuff!!!
I dont play any instruments but watched this and find this very interesting.
Glad you liked it Matt!! VG :-)
@@adamquery7048 Hahaha
"We have lost something in this sonic perfection" Absolutely!
Every DM fan knows about the Fletch dance choreo in Lie To Me.. i think 😁
Anybody remember the tongue petal/ Shunt mailing list days? The syncopated hand clap version of I feel loved was the funniest shit ever.
Zip disks! I remember them - I work in the print/graphic industry and what a revolution it was being able to get 100MB of data on something (roughly) the same size as a standard floppy disk 💾. A couple of years or so later, the same company released the Jaz drive, which had a monstrous 1GB capacity. Prior to Zip/Jaz, we used Syquest cartridges a lot, which were big, bulky and, in our experience at least, notoriously unreliable.
Great video - fantastic to watch two people utterly geeking out about their obsession ... and those DM samples sound f-ing phenomenal through that gorgeous bit of kit!
Yeah, I had a Roland VP9000 that used a zip drive. The disks were great - solid. I spilled a full can of coke into a box of my zip disks, had to clean them quickly. Thought I'd lost a shit load of sounds. The disks were still working 18 years later when I came to sell it.
Haha! Yes I work in marketing (with a long career in publishing) and had a little moment when I saw the Zip disks as well! And the optical disks, ugh. So amazing that you can just transfer files that used to take forever to save through “the cloud” these days...
That instrument is a fountain of love, musical pleasure and many, many eargasms.
Thanks for the excellent video, guys!
Bar none, you have the best Depeche Mode appreciation channel. Production aside, I love your discussions on the actual performances as well.
Bless you Sir!! Thank you!! VG :-)
If I was asked to bet on who was the bigger Geek in this video, my money would be on the guy with glasses! BRAVO from an E-mu Procussion owner. 🏆🇬🇧
I've recently joined the Emu sampler club, getting an ESI4000 with 72MB RAM installed. I've also got the external ZIP drive, but have added a SCSI2SD drive, which gives me 4 x 4GB hard drives (up to 256 banks per virtual disk) on a single 16GB SD card. If you haven't already Vaughn, this is a very worthwhile upgrade.
Thank you for the heads up Gary !! Keep me updated!! VG :-)
Simon sent me an image of that Zip disk after I lost out on the original Wilder auction years ago. Thanks so much, Simon!
George, make sure you go back on those banks and try every key. One of the amazing things is to see how Alan arranged all the sounds he needed across the keyboard. Some sounds are on one key only, while others are on 3 when he only needed one for the song. I kinda assumed it was in case he missed the note, he could still get a nearly correct sound to play by hitting an adjacent key.
Goosebumps when sound comes out of that 80's 🎹, this so emotional I can barely take it! Thank you Vaughn 😚
12:07 Same here saw Alan did that... wow we are geeks LOL 😁👌
Geek on brother !! VG :-)
17 year old here and I’ve Been enjoying your channel so much Vaughn! I have an Emax 1 in the mail and I’m so excited to receive it! Must say you do resemble Fletch! I’ve been told I look like Alan Wilder quite a bit so why don’t we form a tribute?🤣 anyways take care and keep up the great work!
I'm not proud to say but the only thing I could afford at that time was a Creative sound card, which was shit..:) the amount of noise was higher than music coming out. But hey that brought me into music and sampling. Thank you for bringing this friendly beast back, I always dreamt to have one. Thank you guys!
I had an Emax SE Rack Mount version back in the day, really solid instrument! I forgot about the bird run.
The best episode of GT in my honest opinion! Simon should be regular guest!
No point in worrying about being geeky, this stuff is well beyond that point, we've all committed whether we like it or not!
1. Thank you to all the ”Simons” keeping gear like this up and running!! 🙏🏻 ( eventhough they do not support AWs Emax 😉 )
2.I never sell my Emax - Basta!
3. Simon’s got the coolest EMU t-shirts (🙏🏻 for the link)
4. Got the AW sounds but they are off limits. Too caracetristic to use ina any composition. Sad but true. Tons of fun though!!
5. Cheers 🍻
You two are very funny together LMFAO, great video guys, for those of use who remember loading floppy drives and waiting..................................still waiting......................................ahhh there we go
Thank you Tom!! I hope you are keeping well my friend !! VG
"It was a bastard"....best line yet Vaughn...great video as usual...
LOL!! Thanks John !! VG :-)
Big smile on my face watching this one! Great to see you guys together and as a (beginner) keyboard player, loved all the detail. Looking forward to more...
Great video Vaughn (and Simon). We used one of these in the late 90's for a small project and it is a beast!. It was one of the 2 samplers we used. The other was an EPS 16+ which I still have sitting here right next to me.
Thanks for the info! They are great machines indeed !! VG :-)
Always fascinating and entertaining. Keep up the great work Vaughn. Cheers!
Just wow lol. The Shake the Disease sounds.. I'm as excited as you Vaughn when I hear them .... I'm exactly the same, a video of Alan going through the keyboards sounds 101 style for 15 hours, would be epic :)
Bird run! :D Every bit of memory was so precious in those times - and nonetheless there was space for this lovely joke. I miss my EMAX II...
That song you are using in intro!!!!! I love it

Brilliant discussion & Insight... Fascinating !!!
Thank you Rob!! VG :-)
To have such an iconic part of 101 at your fingertips must have been nothing short of thrilling. Excellent video, Vaughn!
Amazing piece of equipment!!! Always wondered about the Emus, Thanks V
Brilliant stuff guys. Keep ‘em coming !! Great to see Si again on the show.
Very interesting vid. Thanks both of you.
It is worth to see it again🙂🎶
It would be great to show how emax handle sound. An example of how a sample can change. And where can I get those DM samples?
Great video!
I just love how your vids take me back to Depeche’s hey days.. Very interesting to see and hear! And Simon being humble about working with Alan shows character 👍🏻
Very well done Vaughty! A very interesting video, as the previous one. Thanks a lot
Much thanks and respect to you !! VG :-)
Great channel, getting through your videos when I can, thank you Vaughn 👍
You are very welcome Sir !! Thank you!! VG:-)
Love the video! Simon has so much great information, and as someone who has those AW samples, I agree that they definitely sound different through the EMAX!
Awesome episode Vaughn. I love to the gear geek talk. I’m looking forward to the video comparing the same DM samples through software samplers and the E-MU.
Cheers to you Dustin!! VG :-)
Wow, loved the Emax. I couldn’t afford the Emulator so this was one of my first synth/sampler.
Dear Vaughn, good show again and I certainly love your 'devotional tour' around the ultra high standard band Depeche Mode. You will end up and that might just (wouldn't that be something!) be your goal, having had all the DM-boys in separate vids, interviewed by you (which you are very good at, btw) and where they, each of them, played some examples on the EMAX and in the end, all of them together! Idea??? >.__.
Brilliant! Keep up the great content.
Cheers Andrew !! VG :-)
Great episode VG. I always remember Midge Ure using the Emulator I at Live Aid for “Reap the Wild Wind” .... a brave move considering their unreliability and in front of a global audience of millions 🎤🎹🎧
That was actually an Emulator II... and I know where that particular machine is now :)
Technomadic You are indeed correct. .... typo. But still a brave move nonetheless 🎤🎹
VG, fantastic video again. How much I would love to try those keys on every 101 track. Mode Geeks Forever!
PS Waiting to see how speechless you'll be if/when Alan drops by for your vid.
Hello Mohammad !! Thank you my friend !! Yes , bring on Alan!! VG :-)

You've forgotten the Daryl Bamonte who replaced Fletch on stage in 1994!
And I wouldn't call Pete and Chris the part of DM family.
Vaughn it was Hans Zimmer who said he chose between a synth and a car. But it could well have been something that Martin ware might have said!!
Great episode! - laughing so much at you having to trade your kidneys for Simon to part with the Emax. Did you manage to secure the deal after a few beers? That's some machine to add to your arsenal :) Did Simon mention he has a CZcams channel? Can you link?
I enjoyed every second of this video.
Nadie como mi Alan e inigualable!!!lo amo por eso😍😍💋💋❤️❤️❤️
I have Alan's disk of these...but I midi my Emax se to the Emax II rack, which actually has the disk with sounds. The Emax II with the digital filters has a much more 'moody' feel to it.
Loved seeing you guys do this - the provenance of this Emu Emax is amazing! While I'm not a musician, I enjoy geeking out. I have to ask, did you get the AW vibes from touching it? We're experiencing them through you! Also, you two need to do a buddy show!
Hahahaha thank you for your kind words as always !! Yes , we were both getting the Alan Wilder vide in a big way !! Fan Boys on a roll!! VG :-)
LOVED THIS!
Great Video! Thank you!!!
Oh yeah... I still have an E-MU E5000 Ultra and I'm holding to it dearly :D
Was thinking i was seeing mr fletch there for a sec lol .. great channel bud ! Keep it up 👍
when you invite Alan in the studio, I imagine him pop up from under the synth
What a wonderful video.
Amazing! Thx for sharing 🙏🏻
You're welcome!! VG 🎹👍😎
Always wanted an Emax .But happy with an Esi2000
Imagine being so petty that instead of sourcing these samples from Alan or Steve Lyon they would literally serve paying concertgoers with piss poor synthesized versions on several tours.
Amazing!
Excellent video!
Hi guys, great vid. Have you any info on how to fit SCSI to my Emax 1 please.
Purchased my first 8meg Emax 2 from Turnkey in Charing Cross Road back in the early 90’s
You are indeed part of the GEEK TRIBE !! Welcome brother !! VG :-)
Just as geeky as you Vaughn. I’m Darren the guy that gave you the DM/DB samples.... I have some other interesting DM samples that I will send to you soon
@@DMK-75 Darren hi!! Good to put a name to a face so to speak !! Yeah man for sure !! You certainly sound like one of me my "GO TO GEEKS " here in the emax community !! Will be in touch !! VG :-)
I’m a bit of a sound collector. Got many patches/samples from well known bands. Some from producers too. The guys from the DM Live wiki page are doing a grand job also
Hey, I'm very interested in trading some rare samples with you. Please email me, my email is aselstyne@gmail.com!
Excellent video! I have an Emax II with ZIP drive I bought about 5 years ago, now wondering if I should consider an original one as well for the analog warmth..... would be nice to hear the two together some day and compare them.
Despite its weird versioning, the last OS for the E-mu Emax was called 1.0. It contained all of the SCSI functionality, disk utilities, and other features that E-mu had built in. Almost any Emax can run this version and be the most advanced version, with the right hardware. Also, save yourself millions of hours of "WAITING" by putting a SCSItoSD inside it. I've done this to 8 Emax's now, and its worth it.
I want to try this on my EMAX 1 "HD RETRO" version rack.
(I believe the 'HD Retro' badge means it was upgraded to HD version later, not at the factory?)
Anyway, can I just disconnect the internal HD, and connect SCSI2Sd to the scsi cable?
(I think it's a 50 pin type).
Could be adapted to DB25 scsi, I suppose, with the right adaptor cable also?
I thought about dangling this out the back.
@@EvLoutonian I don't know about the "HD RETRO" which might just be an after factory retro-fit.
The internals are all the same: there's a 50 pin connector on the motherboard, and you can connect straight to it, minding the pinout numbering-- match pin 0 with pin 0. And yes, you can also use it with the right adapter. I connected all mine directly, but you can dangle it out the back, or out the floppy space, or in place of the floppy. Once you replace it, I would guess you never need to touch it to add samples to it again.
@@Manmademadman fantastic - sounds encouraging!
THANK YOU
I think that we all agree who should be next guest....
Fletch? Oh you meant a musician. Alan of course!
@@johnblackmouth It would be so much fun to see Handclap Fletch standing right beside Vaughn...Fletch could just be 'the main man' within Depeche Mode all through the decades and he should never ever be underrated, in terms of consistency and loyalty to this beautiful band.
I am sorry that Alan left the scenes
I'll be looking forward to the next video, guys! Hello from Russia. I got the joke about the bird on the screen :)
OMG guys, you have got to stop doing these nostalgic synth videos! Awesome! Dragged myself out of the sample quagmire, kicking and screaming, and now you're dragging me back in again. The nostalgia has forced me to haul my Esynth up from the basement to the 2nd floor. Do you understand the pain of carrying what feels like the weight of a DX7 and CZ-1 in one unit, up 2 flights of stairs? I swear it weighs 7,000lbs! Now I just need to spend a few minutes meditating and praying in the hope that it turns on without incident. Dave Rossum should start another Sample Synth company (not Eurorack), and call it Ostrich because we all know Ostrich > Emu. Just make a new full sampler Dave, puhleeeeeze!
Great interesting video-Simon’s fascinating to listen to without being Mr Flash-so normal.Just before you said scratch the surface at the end I was saying it before you-bizarre-getting used to the George language !
Awesome video
It's kind of funny how despite the advances in technology Depeche Mode manage to sound worse and cheaper on today's albums than they did back then .
That is down to the attitude and the passion more than the tech
Yeah they sound like they make their music on a Casio SK-1. Actually their tones (signature sound) were Alan’s genius. You can hear it on his Recoil albums. Sadly that sound has died.
@@johnblackmouth True allthough during the Ultra period with Tim Simenon they still sounded good , but after that ...
Shadowman820 that’s true. I did like Ultra. Bomb the Bass Simeon did have a lot to do with that albums tone.
@@Shadowman820 "Tim, you're a big DM fan, so could you make us sound like DM? We don't have that ability ourselves anymore, you know."

Zip Drive. Cool! Still have mine in the closet. USB version, though. I should be checking what's left on my zippy zippies. It's been 20 years...
Some things I have to say. You look SO Fletcher with those glasses. I need that Tee from Simon For Synth!!! Never saw one Emax looking so brand new. And, did I ever tell you that I got 2 units of Emulator I?... one is working, the other one, not.

17:30 Absolutely 👍
Nice geek talk. I had the emax 2 with Scsi2SD. Nice sampler, nice sound. But a pain to edit and load new samples. So I sold it and bought the Emu Esi 32 which technically is a Emu Emulator III. It’s full digital, but the Filter is really punchy. dM/Alan used the IIIx on tour too.) easy to edit, easy to load samples of the emu library and it can load emax 2 samples easy. And I hated the keys on the emax2. Just sayin.
