Cometic head gaskets are known to delaminate
If used for more than a year
They are meant to be used in race engines that are rebuilt at least once a year I know several people that have had issues of them loosing water or loosing compression

I believe that's the case mate. However, there's no evidence of delamination on the gasket 👍🏻

@@DRMotorsport1976 may not be delamination could be just they get weak and the seals go
A friend of mine runs a 205 GTi in hillclimbing and had a issue where every now and again it threw some water out of the header tank but didn't over heat but then could be fine after it had done it for the rest of the day this continued on and off at most evens he did over the following winter stripped the engine to find no visible issues after changing the head gasket and putting back together the issue never happened again , sounds similar to your issue

Can’t rotating the crank without the head disturb the liners?

It can if you're careless enough. Mine are well fitted and haven't moved. In fact the protrusion dimensions are bang on 🙂👍🏻

Could it be a valve clearance issue? I have no knowledge of the mi16, do they use shims like the XU 8 valve?

It's definitely down to a failed injector mate. They were second hand when they were fitted onto the Jenveys. I should have had them checked when I rebuilt the car 🫣😬👎🏻

@DRMotorsport1976 I was think about the cylinder with low compression. It is not piston or head gasket then it must be leaking somewhere in the head, no?

@@johngregory5280 It had been stood for a week, it could have been down to a lifter. The head will be getting pressure tested before any work is carried out on it 🙂👍🏻

Size of those damn headbolts. They probably weigh more on their own than half the crap engines they build these days xD

@@stewills9711 You know the score then....lol! I believe a lot of the ones that go wrong are down to cheaper head bolts and not cleaning/lubricating them properly. Everything crossed when the time comes for me 😂🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
