Remove Category and Tag Base from WordPress | WordPress URL Rewriting Tutorial

Remove words from URL in WordPress based site. Remove 'Category' and 'Tag' words from WordPress URL. WordPress URL rewriting control in an easy way that is beginner friendly also. How can we remove category word and tag words from URL in WordPress? While creating posts, you can select category and tags for the post that helps in content sorting. Actual category names and tag names are fine but in URL there are words like category and tag. Sometimes clients don't want that. May be they do not want to reveal if the WordPress post in under a tag or category. We can hide category and tag words from WordPress URLs.
Go to permalinks settings page. We can see the category base and tag base options there. We can define custom category base and tag base if we want to. Instead of category or tag word you can choose to use same word or different words. But if we want to hide those words we can use period in these fields. Now If i use periods, will it work? It will work for category only but if we include category in URL template from permalink settings page.
Install plugin named as 'WP No Base Permalink'. Now go back to site permalink settings. Now tag and category words will be removed from URLs.
Now important thing to remember. This will only work for posts and if there are Custom Post Types, it wont work for those custom post types. Also why would you want to remove CPT name from WordPress URLs. Usually Custom Post Types are separate entries than regular posts in WordPress and there can be woocommerce as well and if we see woocommerce URLs structure, it has product word in URL. We can remove that by selecting different option from the list. Now the base word for product links will have shop name instead of product word in URL.
So this is how you can modify or optimize WordPress URLs for your custom requirement. Rewriting WordPress URL to remove category and tag words is a breeze with the plugin that we shared above.

10 times more urls were generated automatically for the tag and category, but after installing the plugin as per your suggestion all those generated urls started getting redirected to the main actual post url. This is good video, I am facing different issue when i remove base category using Rank Math as page such as News, Album or Videos which rely on Elementor design break. Page don't use the elementor page design rather it uses default design no mater waht

You can design individual pages or archive pages in elementor.
