Max doesn't hate David. The way he was raised made him see the bad in people to the point he doesn't believe that anyone can be as good natured and optimistic as David. He tries to break David to reaffirm his beliefs because if good people did exist, that would make Max a shitty person, with shitty parents, and a shitty life.
You can try to help everyone but you can’t pay off $500 of credit card debt in a day... aside from the stimulus check but that shouldn’t be the the goal.
It's not easy when you've given up on caring like Max had, which is why it irks him so that David is like he is, and just also how you feel his shock when David speaks to Max in a way for him to get what motivates him, and how Max is full of guilt because of seeing how David still cared, even with knowing how tough it was when no one else gave a damn about at the camp, since, like he said, someone has to care.
I feel like after The Forest this hits even harder. He doesn’t curse no matter how much pain he’s in. He didn’t “snap”, he didn’t curse because he was angry. He did it as a last resort, he spoke Max’s language to try to have a clearer understanding.
I love that immediately after that last line, David tells Max to go inside so he won’t get sick. Even when he’s at his lowest point, he still cares about others.
I wouldn't call it as lowest points He's just admitting to Max that he knows that the world's horrible and he refuses to believe or conform to a horrible lifestyle and believes in looking at the good and all things in this specific moment because of him being sad or snapping he admits that he knows everyone doesn't care and that the world is bad but he decides by himself to be good so I don't think it's actually his lowest moment He's not the type of person to have that type of moment He's just a guy that when he snaps is more realistic and knows that his actions are usually shrouded in his own persona of reality

Stronger than Max, who just wants to have others see things his way because he's incapable of realizing not everyone is gonna be able to just act tough and rude just because of how the world messed up, when there can be people who are so strong even as hard as it is like David was. And how even with how Max was to him, David still showed from what was said here he cared enough to tell him to go inside so he wouldn't get sick while he kept working on the fire, even if it seemed hopeless. And sometimes, as David said, you gotta try because SOMEONE has to.

I love how Max only in this scene represents so much more than a trouble maker kid who gives adults a hard time. Here he represents the struggles we all face as human beings, every time we get pushed down, fail and cry ourselves to sleep. that voice in our head that tells us to give up on life and to stop getting out of bed. Its because of this it shows what really makes David a great character, because he's not someone people who watch this show relate to, that role belongs to Gwen and Max. He represents what we aspire to be. because in the face of the abyss called life he still chooses to try and make his dreams come true no matter what and see the good that's around him, to keep smiling. It's part of the reason Max hates him, he's jealous of the fact this random guy gets to be happy in the face of nihilism, that he can still give a shit when nobody does.

tbh this scene is David at his truest self, he is honestly just as unhappy as everyone else, but because of his kindness, we never see it. The fact that this is the only time he swears it telling, he is the guy who is always polite even to the people who walk all over him. The fact that he does swear tells us all the rawness of his character in that moment, and to be frank, because of all the one dimentional or overused characters in media this is the first time in a long time we have a chilling moment of someone brought to their last straw. We can never see a moment like this with Rick or Morty, the closest someone else got to this was with the show Final Space (if you've seen it you know all the moments I'm refering too) and its sad that this kind of chill is a lost art

I’m sure you can think of an example, but one that I would use would be the entirety of paradise PD, the most you could get out of each character is there bass gimmick; the fat one, the sadistic one, the one everyone hates for little to no justifiable reason. The Barney’s of the adult world. For a more recognizable one, let’s take Peter Griffin and compare him to Max from camp camp: Peter is lazy, a terrible father, a drunk, and the most irresponsible person in the world, he doesn’t get better as the series got on, he stayed there, he never improved, he’s a mix of a New England and Irish drunk stereotype. Let’s compare that to Max. Max is a young child with quite a mouth, he clearly uses humour to mask his fears and insecurities proven when his life was in danger. He has issues properly voicing his emotions, which causes him to retreat. When David swore for the first and only time, he was frightened, because of the reasons already explained, but he is also super grateful for David constantly trying, shown when he got everyone together in the same episode. As the series goes on, Max goes from hating the camp and David to being his own brand of thankful. He doesn’t change completely, but his feelings to the camp went from malicious to just mischievous. So Max grew as a character while Peter stagnated and this concludes what I refer to as a one dimensional or overused character, a character who doesn’t grow or give any understanding as to why. (Its the same reason why people like Iron Man over Captan Marvel, because tony is flawed and grows while Carrel Danvers doesn’t change and is put into the mantle of hero (it wasn’t always like that, they used to have Captan Marvel be super impulsive and she had to actually face the consequences of it, like when she was trying to kill Miles Morales (I know I spelt it wrong, you know who I’m talking about) because a mutant who had a 60% accuracy clairvoyance said that Miles would bring about Captan America’s death. What happened was that she ended up killing Captan America because he went in to save Miles from her and didn’t have his shield.))
Everyone including Max thinks David is a happy go lucky , naive idiot. An in this scene Max gets to see David reveal the truth. He sees the world just as clear as Max, maybe even more so, but instead of judging the world David is doing his best to better it. David calls out Max and shows just for a moment the true face behind is smile mask.
The world is messed up. That doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy it. There's nothing, absolutely nothing to stop us from being good or bad. But if we're ever going to enjoy things, we have to be good. There's nothing else to it. That's it. You got to be good to be rewarded. To be able to enjoy this messed up world. We're just living in it.

Surely a lot of people saw episodes from the beginning to this one where David was always that straight man as he would never swear and he would be that guy that living camper boy. Seriously
this scene proves how important character composition and speech patterns are. if a character, like, say, bakugo, had said this nobody would bat an eyelid. He curses in every sentence and is constantly angry. But kind-hearted, doormat David who is vehemently against cursing says it, and you get physical chills down your spine.
This...its not sad more heartwrenching. As the child of a teacher I see all the work they put in and how much they care for the kids. There are definitely some teachers who could care less but the good ones...they they so hard. Where I live the school board doesnt care, the parents don't care. The only people who actually care about the kids are the teachers. They are half the time more like parents then the kids actually parents. I know that I've had multiple teacher friends step in for my absent father and they've cared for me more.

honestly I don’t see this as him snapping. He still believes in the camp and in the kids and just said he’d never stop trying to get them to appreciate it like he does. To me that’s him powering through it despite everything, not snapping. Another commenter phrased it well- he just had to speak Max’s language to get him to understand.
This reminds me of a character I played a campaign with in D&D: I played a nihilistic Tiefling disillusioned with the Holy Order he once ran with. Someone else ran a happy go lucky halfling. We but heads over things, but it all came to a head when the party was captured and it was just me and the halfling. H: Don’t worry, we’ll figure something out. Me: HOW? They just made off with the whole team. H: yeah, but they left us. Me: Yeah, the two WEAKEST members of the team. How will we do that! H: I don’t know, but we will. Me: GOD I CAN’T STAND YOU WHEN YOU GET LIKE THIS! WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO POSITIVE ALL THE FUCKING TIME! H:…why?…because no one else will…everyone else here has had trials and tribulations. I get that. Life has beat you all down and shit on your souls. But so have I. The only difference here is that I am kicking back. I am not gonna sulk like a sullen child or a kicked puppy. I am gonna smile at my shitty life and give it the worst humiliation known to man…to be ignored…so that is why I am so happy all the fucking time…so do you wanna sulk? Or do you want to fucking fight back with me? Since then our characters were thick as thieves. My Tiefling learned to lighten up a bit.

My brother said he'll only curse like this-to make it have more impact about how he feels. I do this too, but I tend to slip now and again and to relieve stress when I'm alone. My dad had done it effectively when he and mom were in a fight and he cursed. My mom backed down instantly, like, "dang, I messed up." So, yeah. Cursing as a form of emphasis is a great look to language xD it's also interesting how (in a book I read) it could be described as poetry.
Man, I'll never stop coming back to this scene. Sure, haha funny nice character snaps. But there's something so different about this scene. Camp Camp is one of those shows where the adult humor is just a bunch of swearing and inappropriate jokes, but this scene shows so much depth. And it's been shown with other characters too- Max gets his own moments, Gwen gets her moments of genuine, raw emotion other that just "depressed camp counselor works with happy camp counselor." This show has got its storytelling down to an art. It perfectly combines adult humor and swearing with the real heaviness of life- kind of a Rick and Morty+Bojack Horseman. David doesn't really "snap" during this... He just finally resorts to talking in the ways he knows will get through to Max. Nothing he did before worked, and he knows that Max is a cynical asshole of a kid, but he finally stopped trying to appeal to him in his own way. Finally, David let himself recognize that Max isn't him, and will never be him. He will never love camp the way David did when he was young, and nobody around him cares enough to try. So he gave in. He gave in to be truly honest in a way that Max understands... David is a genius character. He really hits harder than most.

this is a classic thing i see irl. people breaking somone down just because they feel like they are on some metaphoric high horse. when in reality that person that is smiling all the time is further below, using themselves as a support to keep others from falling where they are and encurage them to go higher. to be that light in the dark world that no one has been to them. cause if not them, who would do it right? this is why it is so stupid to try to snuff out somone elses light just to make you feel beter about yourself. once that light goes out, the support beams they made will fall and they will drag you to depths you would otherwise not want to experience. "beware the wrath of the kind man" "the saddest people in the world will try to make others smile" "those that feel entitled to happyness will try to tear others down to their level" and a thing i find annoying is the same people they act like A holes to somone untill they break, act suprised when that person loses composure and starts swearing. well duh you pushed them there!

Surely a lot of people saw episodes from the beginning to this one where David was always that straight man as he would never swear and he would be that guy that living camper boy. Seriously

I literally started crying, He is so sweet and nice and deserves the world.
They say he snapped...but honestly, this just seems like fact shooting to me.
PLEEAASSEE David is a big comfort character/crush/kin for me, and when he started to almost cry I COULDN'T, I bursted in tears
this scene proves how important character composition and speech patterns are. if a character, like, say, bakugo, had said this nobody would bat an eyelid. He curses in every sentence and is constantly angry. But kind-hearted, doormat David who is vehemently against cursing says it, and you get physical chills down your spine.
Max is the representation of what we are now.
But david is the representation of what we want to be.

This...its not sad more heartwrenching. As the child of a teacher I see all the work they put in and how much they care for the kids. There are definitely some teachers who could care less but the good ones...they they so hard. Where I live the school board doesnt care, the parents don't care. The only people who actually care about the kids are the teachers. They are half the time more like parents then the kids actually parents. I know that I've had multiple teacher friends step in for my absent father and they've cared for me more.
This man is out here being calm and everyone is reacting as if he just screamed the f boom in a child's face like don't get me wrong this scene is something but like

honestly I don’t see this as him snapping. He still believes in the camp and in the kids and just said he’d never stop trying to get them to appreciate it like he does. To me that’s him powering through it despite everything, not snapping. Another commenter phrased it well- he just had to speak Max’s language to get him to understand.

This reminds me of a character I played a campaign with in D&D:
I played a nihilistic Tiefling disillusioned with the Holy Order he once ran with. Someone else ran a happy go lucky halfling. We but heads over things, but it all came to a head when the party was captured and it was just me and the halfling.

Me: HOW? They just made off with the whole team.
H: yeah, but they left us.
Me: Yeah, the two WEAKEST members of the team. How will we do that!

My brother said he'll only curse like this-to make it have more impact about how he feels.
I do this too, but I tend to slip now and again and to relieve stress when I'm alone.
My dad had done it effectively when he and mom were in a fight and he cursed. My mom backed down instantly, like, "dang, I messed up."
So, yeah. Cursing as a form of emphasis is a great look to language xD it's also interesting how (in a book I read) it could be described as poetry.

15 year old me couldn't get over this scene
Man, I'll never stop coming back to this scene. Sure, haha funny nice character snaps. But there's something so different about this scene. Camp Camp is one of those shows where the adult humor is just a bunch of swearing and inappropriate jokes, but this scene shows so much depth. And it's been shown with other characters too- Max gets his own moments, Gwen gets her moments of genuine, raw emotion other that just "depressed camp counselor works with happy camp counselor." This show has got its storytelling down to an art. It perfectly combines adult humor and swearing with the real heaviness of life- kind of a Rick and Morty+Bojack Horseman. David doesn't really "snap" during this... He just finally resorts to talking in the ways he knows will get through to Max. Nothing he did before worked, and he knows that Max is a cynical asshole of a kid, but he finally stopped trying to appeal to him in his own way. Finally, David let himself recognize that Max isn't him, and will never be him. He will never love camp the way David did when he was young, and nobody around him cares enough to try. So he gave in. He gave in to be truly honest in a way that Max understands... David is a genius character. He really hits harder than most.

people breaking somone down just because they feel like they are on some metaphoric high horse. when in reality that person that is smiling all the time is further below, using themselves as a support to keep others from falling where they are and encurage them to go higher. to be that light in the dark world that no one has been to them. cause if not them, who would do it right?
this is why it is so stupid to try to snuff out somone elses light just to make you feel beter about yourself. once that light goes out, the support beams they made will fall and they will drag you to depths you would otherwise not want to experience.
