    Your channel is very inspiring, love the video reels and the photos! And my choices in primes at the moments are the 85 (for portraits as I don't like being too far from the models), 24 (for architecture and street photography), and soon the 35 (for street photography and also because I get more of the background when I do portraiture and it doesn't distort the subject's figure as much as a wider lens would. :)

    Hi Matt, fun content as always. I´ve got the 20, 35, 50 and the 85 and use these almost exclusively for commercial stuff. The next addition will be the 105 as I find myself reaching for the 70-200 2.8, from my "golden trio" of 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200, for that extra reach and beautiful bokeh.

    Hello Matt, great to see you. I have the 50 1.8 and the 105 2.8. I do not have the 20 1.8. I would have to replace it with the 35 1.8. But lately my go to lens has been the 24-70 2.8 lens. Either way, these Z mount lenses are a great bunch of lenses for my Z7II. Keep safe.

    Matt, following our recent on-line chat I followed your suggestion and opted for the 50mm 1.8 over the 35, and am not and have not been disappointed, it's a ripper. I have the 20mm for astro (the old 'F' mount was good, this one is amazing as well) but I'm waiting for the 100-400; hurry up Mr Nikon, please announce/release it soon.

    Have the 50 1.8 for both my Z6ii and as a 75mm for the upcoming Zfc I ordered for lightweight city/travel. 85 1.8 and the soon to arrive (hopefully) MC 105 for obvious reasons. Great trio. Have a wonder 14-30 f4 S and knock around 24-200mm zooms so not needing the extra glass on that end. Thanks for the comparisons as always!

    Loved your videos Matt, thanks for posting, all look forward to you musing about the Z system and photography in general. For me, I currently only have the 50mm 1.8S Z prime. Before the Z fc announcement, I was planning on adding the 35mm 1.8S first, and then in time the 85mm 1.8S. But, I've since ordered the Z fc with kit zoom lens, so I'm toying with the idea of getting the 24mm 1.8S instead, as that can be 24mm on my Z6 and 36mm on my Z fc. The 50mm can approximate short tele as well as the Z fc...so by spending a little bit extra, I'll have two bodies with two primes giving me a 24mm to 75mm focal range...instead of one body (Z6) and three primes from 35 to 85mm range.

    I think I actually read something by a Nikon lens designer talking about how people tend to fall in one of two camps when it comes to preferred focal lengths. There's the 17-35-85 group and there's the 20-50-105 group. Each focal length in these groups corresponds to roughly half the FOV of the previous one. I also am in the 20-50-105 group, and I already have the 20 and 50mm, so I'm definitely thinking of getting the 105.

    For years, I have been using a 50mm f1.8 AF-D lens and the 24-135mm kit lens on my venerable Nikon D80. I recently upped my game and picked up a Z5 with the 24-200mm lens in a bundle and also (quite randomly) picked up the 50mm f1.8 s to go with it, because it was on sale I wanted a fixed lens similar to what I had on my D80. And man, I seem to have hit the jackpot; Both these lenses turn out the be really great.

    Hi Matt! You picked my ideal 3 Z primes. Still waiting for my 105 mc so my longer prime would be the Z 85 1.8 or my favorite lens of all time - the F mount 105 f1.4 E- it's big and heavy but gorgeous. Just a side note - I shot the F mount 85 1.4 G for years and loved it. I was shooting family portraits on both 85s and noticed a difference in camera review and confirmed in post production that the Z 85 was visibly sharper with better rendition. I sold the 85 1.4 G the next week.

    I'm watching the system with interest, and for travel /everyday the new 28/2.8 looks very good. The upcoming 40 would pair very well with it. Not sure what the third would be, perhaps the 24-200 to cover the longer lengths without being a huge bag filler.

    Also a request for a future video could you cover your thoughts on AI software such as Topaz Denoise/Sharpen/Gigapixel, Luminare AI etc. vs less quality lenses.

    Hi Matt, thanks for that wonderful video! Using my Z6/Z7 now with a starting 24-70/4 and extended with 14-30/4, but added very quick the perfect primes 35/50/85. The zooms are good for traveling, but after the experience of that outstanding 105 MC I certainly agree your choice: 50 and 105 is a must to have, not sure yet with the 20 because of having that wide angle zoom, which is giving me some extra angle but on the other hand has not the 1.8 effect. Maybe I should trade-in the 85 for a 20?

  • @PommyBastard
    @PommyBastard Před 3 lety +2

    My travel kit is the 35mm 1.8 S, 85mm 1.8 S and the 24-200mm 4-6.3
    At the top of my GAS wish list though is the 105mm so I'd sub that in for the zoom if I had to pick 3 primes.

  • @riley_oneill

    Thank you for including the bit for DX mode. I have the Z50 and I bought the 50mm 1.8 earlier this year an love it. Its pretty much the only thing I use. I was curious as to what to go for next and was thinking the widest possible lens and then the longest. I think the kit zooms sort of have me covered on the zoom front, so if I want that versatility I already have it.
    Would these three lenses still be your picks for a DX shooter?

  • @MichaelCortese1
    @MichaelCortese1 Před 3 lety +27

    Before I watch the video I'm going to put what my trio would be. The 20mm 1.8s, the 50 1.8s, and the 105 MC. The 105 bumped out the 85 1.8s! The 20 is a monster wide angle,. incredible rendering. The 50 is light, bright, and so sharp. It's also the best focal length. And then the 105 for portraits and close detail

    I was a 35, 85, 105/180 girl but now I've moved to 20, 35 and 85/105). I got the 24-70 2.8 and have found I really love it. Incredible workhorse lens and I'll carry that one if it's too risky to change lenses due to water or blowing sand/dust if I'm only carrying one body. It's a bit heavy but it renders incredible images. If I had only one prime lens, it would be the 35 for stills and video, portrait and landscape.

    Hey Matt. I have the 20mm, 35mm and 50mm as I specialise in Nightscape photography. The 20mm f1.8S is my most used lens by far . .I love it. But of course all the Z lenses are wonderful. Richard

  • @fabio2168
    @fabio2168 Před 3 lety

    I got the Z 50 1.8 with the Z5, my first ever camera and lens. The thing is I wasn't even into the 50mm focal lenght, but after reading good things about it, I got it, and man it was a good choice. Optically it's fantastic, you can use it in every situation, even shooting directly into the sun it's really difficult to get lens flare. Amazing.
    Because I shoot mainly landscape I'm thinking to get the 20 f1.8. The third prime would be the 85 1.8 (I'm interested in the 105 but maybe I'd like to see if Nikon is going to release a normal 105).
    And one last thing: I hope to see really soon the 24-105 f4, that would be a good do it all lens for me.

  • @Databyter
    @Databyter Před rokem +1

    Coincidentally these are the exact three I picked, with the addition of a 300mm Fmount PF lens via the fTX adapter. They are all great choices. I do find that there is an incredible gap between 20mm and 50mm however, and I am tempted to get the Z 35 1.8 which isn't really as spectacular as the others optically on some reviews, although it should be. I am tempted to fill the void with a travel lens, a zoom, for those times I need to get some in between focal lengths. But the tradeoff is a few stops of exposure and depth of field options, which honestly I don't always need or use even with the primes, but it's nice to have it as an option. I think I will get the 24-120 f4. I'd be tempted to get the 24-70 2.8, but I do have primes that cover much of that range so I might as well err towards a less fast and more flexible 24-120 that reportedly has excellent sharpness and color rendetion competing or even beating out some of the less ambitious zoom ranges. If they ever offer a 35mm 1.4 I'll likely jump on it to fill out my reasonably fast prime range. And if a rich uncle leaves me a million, I'll keep my eyes out for the 85mm offering as well. I do have have two lenses I’ve really wanted and one more that would want to be a solid trifecta for my kit. Currently using the Z50. The two lenses I have that and use extensively in travel: Z 85mm f/1.8 S and Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S VR lenses. As for my final lens to acquire for overall travel would be the Z 20mm f/1.8 S lens. Hoping to upgrade to a larger body later but won’t be giving away my Z50, it’s been a beast and a reason I found my love for photography!

  • @johngoossensphotography

    I would love to add a 35 mm to my 105 but I’m quite sure I’ll go for the 28 mm pancake that I can than use on z6ii and zfc. The 105 mm is such a briljant lens, that will be a keeper for both macro and portrait. I would combine these two on a trip with either a 24-70 or a telephoto zoom lens.

  • @MichaelCantwell
    @MichaelCantwell Před 3 lety +1

    I own the 20mm, the 50mm, the 85mm, and within the past few days the 105mm. Had the 105mm come out before the 85mm, I might not have gotten the 85mm but the 85 is still an incredible portrait lens and maybe would be my go to over the 105mm. Time will tell, but if I could only have 3 lenses, it would be the 20, 50 and 105. I also have the 24-200 for landscapes and hope to one day possibly acquire the 100-400, however, if I could only use the 3 primes you mentioned, I would still be pretty happy.

    I've been using the 24-70 f2.8s for the last couple of years and it practically covers all my needs, motorsport, portrait and a small amount of landscape and street, given the choice I would also pick up the 70-200 F2.8s and perhaps the 14-24 F2.8 or perhaps the 20 1.4s.

    Great video! The 70-180 is definitely a buy for me. I’m using a Tamron G2 70-200 on my Z6ii and it’s good, but I want to get away from using an FTZ adapter. This is an affordable price for me. I might get the 180-600 too. I had the 200-500 but it was too heavy, this lens appears to be about a pound lighter. With the 200-500 I always wanted more reach, but it wasn’t a lens I used much so ill have to think on this one some more

    Thank you for answering the VR adding to IBIS for video! Great information. Wish Nikon would put a number on it like Canon (8-stops). I think the L-Fn button will be great feature in portraiture sessions for assigning subject tracking or if in the future Nikon gives a EyeAF toggle on like Sony.
    Loved filming weddings on the Tokina 100mm with the D750. Did a 100+ weddings with that as my default lens. Second shooter typically shot 35mm and I would switch for establishing shot but otherwise loved the focal length for capturing details and candid reactions. Punching into DX back then was also nice with no penalty at 1080p. To have Autofocus would be superb as the 100mm AF was awful, but all Nikon AF in video was garbage back then.

  • @RaymondParkerPhoto
    @RaymondParkerPhoto Před 3 lety

    The one of these I don't have is the 20mm ... and it would likely be the one Z prime I would buy today. I had the manual-focus f-mount back in the '80s and used it often for wide-angle product shots -- panniers on bikes, for instance. It's a great focal length. I'd better sign off before I talk myself into buying one.

  • @koenpijpersphotography

    35 20 105 : Almost correct, I just got the 35mm next to my 20mm because I like its focal range and also want to use it for my astro photos. Sadly now selling that 50mm as a result. 35mm is also really sharp. Might get the 105 later on for portraits and macro (I rarely do this but I am curious). Thank you for the video.

    For underwater photography with my Nikon Z8, my three "Prime" Z lenses are: the Z 105mm for macro-photography; the Z 24-50mm zoom for wide angle; and the AF-S 8-15mm Fisheye (using the FTZ II adapter). Of course, they are all encased in a Nauticam housing and appropriate ports and water-contact optics, which are different for each lens. Interesting that the Z 105mm is such a key lens that it features in the top three Z lenses for both terrestrial and underwater photography!

  • @jpdj2715

    I actually have all 5 Z 1.8S prime lenses and the 105/2.8S. Plus an ancient design "Petzval" with F-mount (needs FTZ adapter). When I have to travel light, in my pre-shoot planning, I decide which 2 lenses I bring. For a broad assignment, I concur with the 20-50-105, but in a variant could go with 24-50-85 and pack smaller and lighter because of that. The 1.8S lenses are all very sharp, have no optical flaws to mention and for this old Nikon F & D shooter they're on another level. (After a Z 7, I shoot Z 7ii now). That all said, the 105/2.8S is magical in its tones and gradations. The other day, it was the only lens I brought to my shoot and I also shot some portraits with it. Even at f/8 it has a beautiful velvety smooth background blur - wow.
    I owned the F-mount 20/2.8D and 20/1.8G and felt these were between good and great. The 20/1.8S is excellent. As to the 85/1.8S, compared to the 85/1.4G that I owned is on another level and I actually preferred the 85/1.8D over the 1.4G version. And that Z 50 lens? Can you imagine the biggest Leica snob in the world having tried it and saying that mr. Nikon san should consider making this lens in Leica mount as well? Nuf said.

    my holy trio is 35/50/85
    but i think 24 or 28 will fit as well instead of the 35
    the idea of croping with the z7(ii) is clever. but i like my z6 and will not crop. today i only have the 50 f1.8 s. i will use my 85 f1.8 with the ftz and wait for the 28 f2.8 and perhaps for the 40 f2 as well.
    it's much more about learning to use what you have.
    once i shot a wedding with only 35 and 50 (85 stayed in the bag, there was no stuation i needed it). i shot 35 sigma a f1.4 with my reliable d600 (underestimatet!) and 50 f1.8 se with my beloved Df. the result was honored well with compliments 😊

    Hello Matt, I feel you have made a nice selection of lenses. This is not go to be good for me I know I have had the Z7ii since December 2020 and bounced in last week and it still works. I have been using it whit the FTz adaptor and find all my lenses apart from on and that my F mount 70-200mm vr 1, but saying that it is my oldest lens and it does show. I do have the 14-24mm F2.8 and 24-70mm f2.8 Z mount zoom and yes that are very nice but no knot blow me away. Then again I believe the biggest use cases for these lenses are in video. That is a skill I do not have. Interesting video keep well, keep safe and enjoy life. My three lenses in Z mount would be a 24mm F2.8 PCE, the 105mm MC macro(on order), my 500mm pf F mount that I have.

    I currently own the Z50 with it kit lens (great little camera for travel). If I decide to go with a FF camera then it would be the Z6ii with 24-70 F4 (kit lens), would love the 70-200 F4 or 70-300 f4 (Nikon needs to work on these lenses) and maybe the 14-30 F4. I am hobbyist/retired photographer, so really can't afford the faster 2.8 lenses. And maybe the 18-140 mm lens for my Z50. I guess I better start saving some money. Cheers Matt

    I currently have the 24-70 f/4 S, the 35mm f/1.8 S and the 50mm MC f/2.8. I have found the 50mm to have some problems focusing and to ensure it wasn't a settings problem I reset my Z 7II this morning. I seem to need to reset the Z bodies now and then, anyone else run into strange issues that require a reset? For my next prime, it will be difficult to decide but I'm hoping Nikon will release more Z lenses soon.

    being that I have every previous nikkor 50mm 1.8 F mount version, the G being a fantastic performer on the Z, I am holding off on any 50mm Z, for now.
    However the 105 and the 20 are on the top of my list. In place of the 50 (Z) I would perhaps get the 24-200. That with the 20mm would be the perfect backpacking kit to cover all ranges and any tent-side astro photography. Depending on my load I would probably take along my 50 1.8 G for standard range wide aperture shots.

    I currently happen to have a setup of 3 prime lenses - 24 mm, 50 mm and 85 mm. And I'm happy with it. I'd like to add the 35 mm to the collection but basically, I don't complain at all. The 85 is my all time favourite as I do quite a lot of portraits and the bokeh of this lens is really beautiful (yes, I'm crazy about bokeh), the 24 is a little too wide for some situations, there were times when I was wondering, whether I should have gotten the 35 first but I've grown to like this lens and I use it quite often now, sometimes even for portraits (one has to be really careful though). And the 50 is just so universal, it's useful for portraits, it's my go to lens for shooting couples and for street photography. So I'm really happy I have these three. By which I'm not saying I play to save up to buy some other lenses

    Although, they are significantly larger and heavier than the primes, I still prefer to go out shooting with the trinity of f/2.8S zooms. Though I’m seriously considering bringing along the new 105mm f/2.8 MC just to have that buttery bokeh for portraits, and the ability to shoot macro if the opportunity arises.

    Unlike the first round of AF-S lenses, I think it is too early for me as an enthusiast, to decide on which lens to buy from the limited Z lens collection. Hence, I only bought the 50 f/1.2 S that is absent from Nikon's lineup for decades, as my general purpose (kit) lens.
    Perhaps some upcoming lenses, such as an update of its 105/135 DC models, 24-70 f/2, 105/135 f/1.2, 200 f/1.8, etc. will trigger my hot button. 🙂

    PS - Matt, sometimes the obvious is looking straight at you and you don't see it. I hesitated on the Z7ii and got the 6ii because of the very long wait time on the former, the cost, and the idea of whether I needed the 45MP. A simple item you pointed out just now about even DX mode on the 7ii gets you 50% more focal length and still 20 or so MP, and with the better color rendition and lower ISO, it made me rethink my decision. I guess thank you? I ordered the Z7ii and will sell the 6ii. With the 7ii and the Zfc I'll have a complete kit for many many years to come. I went 8-9 years in between buying anything so I'm hoping I can get the same value out of this pair.
