Hi Splattercat, I'm the lead dev for Exanima. Big fan of your channel, always checking it out to see what cool indies are coming out. Glad to see you're enjoying Exanima. If you ever feel like playing it on stream I'd love to jump in chat and answer any questions or just hang out. Cheers.
Hi, lead dev for exanima! Can I get game for free? I promise to buy it if I like it
@@neuzvecis You didnt even try the magic word "please"
Well with the improvement in movement I guess it's time to go and buy it. Thanks for a great game dev.
Exanima is incredible! Really hope he takes you guys up on the offer
Hi lead dev! Love the work I’m super excited to see how it continues
I think one of the most immersive things in this game is the fact that in the fights you trip over stools and bump in to each other. It's messy and panicky and feels ... more real? or something.
This feels like a game from a timeline were games went down a totally different path.
When people tried to make a fun game with their unique vision. Not trying to please the widest audience with what is popular at the time.
I'm not even mentioning corpo thinking for AAAs.
@@stanislavkimov2779But those games still exist. What the fuck are you people smoking.
I have been playing this game on and off for years. It's wonderful. The music the movement the atmosphere. Just fantastic.
On and off for years too. Fun game
Yep, actually scary the first time playing through the game
Yeah I keep coming back to it despite how long I've owned it. There's just nothing else like it out there.
closest thing is Half-Sword and it's so janky and you can't actually control your characters attacks to get better like you can in Exanima. Very random. It's the kinda game people describe when they can't get used to Exanima's physics tbh.@@TexelGuy
A few corrections:
7:43 - there are maps you can find, but they act like IRL maps. There are also compasses that help with its use.
31:11 - the game only makes check point saves at the first locked door, and at the start of each floor up until the end of level 3. This incident is actually gaining power for your Thaumaturgy, which I’m pretty sure you use to enhance a spell with.
The orbs are for improving you weapons and armor. The blue juice is for healing.
they copied chug jug from Fortnite
@@rallipete wouldn't it be the other way around?
@@VikingLord2000Splat says the same about maps being without a marker and even mentions that you don’t know north-south without a compass
@@woofy9977 he hovered right over the compass on the table with the big map around the 10 or 11 minute mark lol
Hero: Darren, we can sneak right around here no sweat. Darren: Peace was never an option...
I can feel that sense of unease that this game gives you just from watching it. The more you get immersed into this world, the more that feeling intensifies. The lighting and sound only serve to elevate that lurking notion of tension and anxiety.
Easily one of the best games I've ever purchased. Once you get passed the learning curve of combat and movement you're left with one of the best dungeon gaming experiences out there. I hope more people pick this one up. I think of all the indie games I own, this would be the first I recommend to people.
How long before you got a handle on the controls. I just started and it’s somewhat frustrating
@isaiahjohn9642 It will vary per person, and I should say that I'm not one of the players that knows every cool combat move like grappling or shield bashing. I would say it took me a week or two to understand the mechanics, but that was back when this first came out with no guides on it. If I were you. I'd look up basic movement and combat vids where people explain how to move your cursor and swing your weapon. There is also an arena mode that is a fantastic tool to help you get better at combat. It is also really fun on its own. If you're working at it, it shouldn't take you too long to get the basics down.
@@CatchyNameman practise combat in the arena mode and you will be good
@@MrHanky117 2 weeks 😩 my goodness. Thanks for the reply
@isaiahjohn9642 This game is incredibly original. It's a blessing and a curse. It's well worth it if you stick with it though. Very fun and extremely satisfying. Good luck!
Remember backing the Kickstarter a long time ago. Glad they are still focused on it. It's very unique and the intricate lumbering ragdoll physics are endearing. It needs all the polish and content it can get.
the kickstarters was for Sui Generis if i remember right. Exanima was meant to be just the demo.
@@RedWolfCidYep, both games are developing alongside each other. Some content from Sui Genesis gets moved over to Exanima when it makes sense, such as the procedural weapon designs.
This is one of the most frustrating and rewarding games I have ever played. If you decide to try it, prepare for a lot of pain in learning the movement/combat. That being said, slowly mastering the system feels like you are actually learning swordplay, and landing a perfectly aimed strike to the head and watching your opponent crumple is one of the single most satisfying things in all of gaming.
Such a top tier comment.
@@John_Onestrand
there are lots of vids showing combat from experienced players! but yeah depending on your opponent, e.g. what block/parry skills and weapon they have, with practice you should be able to peg them in head SOMEWHAT consistently. Thrusts are easier to miss, but lower commitment+risk, I think
@ianallen738
lol i try
@@John_OnestrandYes, you can learn shield bash, leg sweep, shoving,..
Sweeping's pretty OP. Polearms used to be the meta.
Though now with force magic added one handers will probably take over.
And be prepared for updates every 2 years
I thank you for covering Exanima AGAIN ;) this game is SICK!
I've been playing this game for quite a while now. No matter how many times you ''beat it '' it always stays fresh, there is always something new to find, build to try and so on. With recent 0.9 update i got to feel like a newb once again. Music, Atmosphere and vague storytelling gives this game so much charm.
One of the mopst innovative and atmospheric games of recent times. I will always remember the first time i played it, really hit a different spot in my gaming soul.
Yessir
Glad to see Exanima getting some spotlight and recognition. We need more games like Exanima.
The game also has a carrier arena mode in which you get $ for matches. You can then buy more gear, hire more gladiators, and hire other staff such as physicians. Gladiators level up and get better as you go, but they can (and will) die as well. Highly recommend this game, I've had it on my hard drive for years and always come back to it.
That sounds like a big deal! This is just a separate game mode?
Also, there’s a chest in the classroom on the teachers’ desk, the key inside opens the door in the back of the classroom and that chest can fit in your inventory, the largest size container that does, there’s 2 but the other is a satchel next to a skeleton in one of the sewers.
With that chest you can fit multiple small weapons(short swords, small maces, daggers), shoes, in case you switch from boots to greaves, you don’t run around barefoot, I’ve been hit in exclusively the foot without shoes on in the game too many times. Wear your boots.
To anyone who thinks of picking up this game, read the instructions, there’s a straight up manual, it’s useful, then go to arena practice until you beat expert, you’ve probably already seen both the arena and dungeon if you’re gonna play. So learn how to play and you’ll enjoy the actual play more.
Hey Splattercat, great video! I have been watching for years now and I love when you talk about other games that you really love while playing. (In this one you mentionned Mech Engineer).
I think it would be great if you had some sort of top 10 list by category that you would update periodically.
So glad you indie guys keep an eye on these games! Despite a slow rollout these guys are always putting new and bigger updates into the game, im not mad i bought it years ago
Wow, this feels really OG. You learn to play the game the hard way. Breeds a certain satisfaction that you rarely get from gaming these days. Now on my wishlist.
This game is 1 of the best and most UNIQUE indie games out there, the updates take a long time, but the lore, the gameplay, the level design, its all just perfect.
This game is incredible, I've been playing it since version 0.4 If I remember correctly, and this game has evolved so much and is really so original, can't wait to the next updates and get more magic schools
well i guess it aught to have evolved some, since its been in early access for almost a decade LOL
@@raidermaxx2324 AND this is meant to be a demo of their true game to boot

@@raidermaxx2324 Yeah, exanima is basically meant to be just a tech demo set in the underworld for their actual game called 'Sui Generis'
@@raidermaxx2324Exanima is a sort of test for their game Sui Generis
Ive played this game forever -- its so great when you really get the combat down. If/when they make it multiplayer -- it's all over and it'll blow up huge.
This has been a delightful review, and I'm moving this gem up my wishlist for sure.
The movement really stands out in your first two minutes of walking around.
You really got me good with the so-called hitting the deck, culminating in a rain of dungeon ladies. I was crying of laughter.
Had this game for a while, its so unique and hard as hell
Also the arena mode is really good its almost it's own game with gladiator management and whatnot
I would recommend this game for that mode alone. The maze-like structure of the 1st two levels of the game, with its 'traps' that are just time consuming and not hard make replaying the story mode more annoying than fun. Arena's where it's at!
I recently watched your other exanima videos and seeing this was up was a joy!
"blade in the tuckspot" should be the title of your next rap album, splatty.
The blue orb item repairs your gear.
I adore this game. It's like someone took a thought I had as a kid and made it deep and real. So freaking good.
I didn't fall... it was a tactical move. 😂😂😂😂
Super happy to see a game like this. I could watch this all day.
Check Odin the Underwhelming, he uploads videos about the game very often.
I have been praying that you would stumble upon this gem! This is an excellent game, and it gets better/even more enjoyable as you get better!
6:34 The timing when you step in...
10 seconds later he *stepped in* face down on the floor 😂
Bro i nearly pissed myself laughing cuz of you .
This update caught me off guard haven't played since the last update maybe a year ago and i'm hyped for this.
Just the arena mode alone is totally worth the price-tag. The developer of this game REALLY cares. There are so many cool things, even the procedural armour/weapon generation is just next-level.
This game in 2-player coop would be some wacky fun.
The devs confirmed their intention on adding coop, but we will probably have to wait one or two years before that, even three years as coop is not an important feature for the devs.
I’ve finally been convinced. Wow it’s something special. Loving it!
The first time I've ever seen a character actually tripping over an obstacle in the way.
The common stool is the worst enemy you will face.
have been pondering about this game for a while, time for me to jump in.
I picked this up about a day or two before you uploaded this and I absolutely love it. It is by far the best kind of games put into one. The only thing I think I would like added is some more color, it's hard to see some things. Changing the color of the sim reticule would be nice to, like making it green so the red doesn't blend in to the scene, I can't see the red as well. And one day, multiplayer ❤ it's so good, imagine an open world with horses that were also procedural animation with physics. So good.
Oh boy do I have news for you...
Exanima is, in essence, the prelude and testing grounds for Sui Generis, their open-world RPG (Not yet released), which is going to be Exanima, but bigger.
All the different aspects and mechanics we have in this game, (like the dialogue system, inventory managment, weapons with different effects, etc.) are in the game to prepare them for the main game, basically.
@@LiindirThey are adding stuff to the beta branch every week tough
The fighting system reminds me a lot of Die By The Sword from the olden days which was an awesome game
i have loved play the Kobold in that game !😄
@@cillocillo5287 Die By The Sword looked and played a bit like an ML algorithm trying to learn swordplay and was unintentionally hilarious as a result, but it was also intentionally hilarious. Good times.
I remember playing Silver, which had the control scheme I most desired from all swordfighting games. It's like Exanima but arcadey, plus you can dodge (jump one step back). I would definitely like more games to have this system, it's so satisfying.
Thanks for sharing this one again, no other game quite like it.

It hates me. Personally.
I love it.
splatt going right by the key on the table at 11:10 through 11:24 was making me lose my mind lol. He hovered over it and iterally had it in the middle of his screen forever lol. Still love ya splatt

I grabbed this after watching this playthrough. I adore this game. It's sooooo good.
Dang bro I wasn't sure I'd actually see you cover this again I asked in one of your recent vids and said there was a big update and I knew you kinda liked the game thanks for covering this new update man love your content

I have this game, i should jump into it again soon.
Absolutely love the physics simulation in this game in a funny way: tripping over obstacles like benches and dead bodies is quite unique! How much more realistic can we get?..
I'm at 1k hours now and still thoroughly enjoy this title on a regular basis
Love stuff like this and Kingdom Come. Games that do something different and unique that make you feel more immersed and rewarded for your efforts

This, delta v and mech engineer. I bought All three just because of you when you released videos about them splat. Thanks man.
at least Delta V was a more or less finished product and still not an unfinished tech demo after being in EA since 2015.. almost a decade!! Thats crazy dude! If io had purchased this game for full price in 2015, in "Early Access" wit the prmise that i would be getting a finished product within a reasonable amount of time, and then in 2023, its STILL min EA?!?!?! I would have been livid as a gamer\consumer.. I'm not a fan of this Early access bullshit
@@raidermaxx2324 yeah early access sometimes left a sour taste in my mouth too. But I bought this because of what it is now, if it gets more updates and reaches 1.0 then that's even better :D
Nowadays I won't buy early access games unless I've played a demo of them and/or want to support the dev.
At this point, I'm just gonna get this game, it looks great, many things I've never seen in any other games. Whether I like it or not, I'll see after I play it, but for now I like it a lot just from watching this video.
Anytime I see this game I always am reminded of that old RPG Arx Fatalis for some reason.
Its great how casually you say the most random and funny things.
this one has been on the ol should I or shouldn't I purchase list... this looks to have firmly top rope frog splashed its way into the purchasss list this week. Thanks Splat. 🤘

Never change Splat! 😁
"Is that a poopin' hole or a scoopin' hole?" 😆😆
Wow I tried this when it was first in beta or had like a small test level. I can't believe it's not done yet. Is there any actual game, or missions or story yet? I remember it just being a tech demo for physics fighting, which was cool but it didn't seem to have a game to it.
Not yet finished but very close, the last version they released a week ago is 0.9.
8:11 when you left the compass on the table I died a little inside...
I say that this is interpretation of Neo receiving the "Drunk boxing" training
just bought this game today gonna check it out, seems fun
Looks great, like 5 or so years in early access though, but damn this looks like a game I would enjoy, have to download it tomorrow
Picked this up two days ago and hated it after the first three hours. Now I'm 15 hours in and I'm hooked on the Arena mode, which is great as it's teaching the combat controls. I'm looking forward to getting back to the campaign with the ability to actually defend myself.
You've probably already discovered this but beware of hammers. Even a big wooden mallet in the lowest rank can kill someone outright with the right swing. I've been domed by hammers so many times, I have PTSD when facing off against one. They're nasty because they can deal heavy damage through armor so even in later play a sledge is a deadly threat. I'd rather face a sword any day. Sure, hammers don't deal red damage as often, but when they do it's a costly mistake.
yeah one of my best fighters got a nasty slam to the head while he was knocked down, nearly did all his health in red@@Plystire
Beware of getting back into the campaign cocky after getting good in arena, don't fight multiple enemies at once, the zombies are not always hostile and can be ignored if you keep your distance/don't act aggressive, locking them inside rooms is also a valid strategy.
@@nmlss-r9 But then you miss out on skill experience... just sayin'.
@@PlystireThe most deadly foe is an Aspirant wielding a quarterstaff. **shudders**
undoubtedly my favorite game you ever showed me splatt, your original video on it changed my damn life.
This update is crazy fun
This is a truly unique game for me. The dungeon crawling and the arena modes are fun for the most part. Although biggest pet peeve with this game are the puzzles. Towards the end of the "levels" or floors of the dungeon there are these puzzles you need to solve, some of them are intuitive, most of them are lethal and some of them are exceptionally boring. I remember spending an entire hour without fighting anything just trying to run through a gate before it closes and that was the last time i played it. I hope they changed things around a bit, it would be fun to go back to it and experience the game again.
The blue orb can be used to upgrade the condition of an item (armor, weapons, clothing). So if you got a 'crudely made sword in fairly worn condition', it can turn it into a 'crudely made sword in fairly good condition'. However, it can't make a 'crudely made sword' into a 'well made sword'. It's the glowing blue jars that heal you.
I saw all the projectiles. wow, spell that right when you're stoned. I feel like a damn hero.
Whoah, who would've thunk we'd be getting yet another Exanima video from Matt the Splatt!
Fantastic game. Challenging, dark, atmospheric and definitely worth trying, if you didn't yet.
I have tens of hours spent in just the practice arena mode- I adore this game even though I'm SO bad at it
Two drunk guys fighting with sticks - yes, you have hit the nail on the head.
This was the first game I ever bought on steam when I got this simple dell laptop that was not made for gaming. I could only play this on the lowest possible settings to get it to work. For so long I walked through this game without the ability to see shadows and the flicker of the fire. Loved every frustrating minute 😊
Do you have Mosa Lina on your radar?
It came out yesterday and I think it's a cool concept worth a look.
> Darren, "You left me for dead you SOB!"
Thanks for bringing this gem to the forefront.
I last played Exanima in April 2015... Guess I'll head back in!
I always pull doors towards me when opening them.
Because if there's something scary, you can slam the door in their face.
Also, sometimes you'll push the door open and there's someone hiding behind it, so you walk forward and get stabbed in the back. lol
Splat how do you click on everything on the table except for the compass??
You might not want derrin to have the torch. He likes to disappear down pits
Haha 😂. I originally learnt to not trust Derrin with much other than being a pack mule, but in the most recent update he is actually not a useless oaf. He has surprised me with being able to walk across at least decently made makeshift bridges without tumbling to his death.
@@originalusernameoftheyear6500 he smashed me in the back of the head with an axe when I first got him. I just got the game
hey you should make another video showing the arena mode, i personally love the dungeon but most of the people i showed this game to prefer to just play the arena since its more straightforward and you get to fight, get new equipment and try different things without the fear of losing everything and having to start all over. i bet that would appeal to a different audience that might pass on the dungeon gameplay. :)
Cannot praise this little gem enough. The game got the most realistic and satisfying combat system ever, same goes for the (newly expanded) magic system. And only for 14 Euro??

I backed this probably 10 years ago. Back then it was an open world RPG called Sui Genesis, and Exanima was just a proof of concept preview demo for that. Now it looks like Sui Genesis is abandoned (the only video of it on their website is 9 years old and there's no other mention of it). Actually thought this had been too till this video. Nice its still being worked on, i could never get along with the rag doll combat though
Watched the last vid covering this game. Will be picking it up now seeing the devs are improving it. Didn't pull the trigger on it before because the combat was way too drunken. Now it seems challenging and not silly.
Anyone happen to get a controller working with it? I know they've not added it. I looked up guides but none of them worked too well.
Yes it is an amazing game and even better it is actually the testing ground for an upcoming actual full fledged RPG with the same gameplay mechanics
What do you mean? This is just a side project for the real game they are making?
What is the name of that upcoming RPG?
@@GameTimeWhyYes. Sui Generis is the goal they are pursuing on making eventually. I would severely temper my expectations however. Exanima has been in development since around 2015. They've only just reached version 0.9 and there's no set timeline for a 1.0 release. Let alone a much larger open world RPG based on this. Yes, Exanima is essentially providing a ton of the needed assets for the follow-up but at the pace they're going, I think I might not even live to see that game released.

Man, your comments... How it comes to your head (maybe like a projectiles)? Awesome, man, awesome
At 25:50, you avoid the cleaver by being really CLOSE to the enemy, which naturally emerged from the physics. This is taught in some martial arts, but I cannot remember another game that featured such a possibility.
A quirk of the game still allows them to tap your back (literally, just a tap) with the cleaver when you 'hug' them and you get red perma-damage even though you're wearing three layers of leather. Stuff like that ensures I always keep distance. The sawblade is the worst offender.
I got this purely for the arena mode. Super addictive.
