Great job, Edward! Very helpful for my future X5!
I drive exactly same vehicle. Very useful! Thanks for the courage to do it myself.
You must have a good heart buddy, appreciate your filming under a mess like this
Thank for the video! I love changing my own brakes, oil, and working on my own cars when I have the time and honestly..... my bmw is easiest!🥰
I totally agree with you! BMW is one of the easiest!
Just went to the same place you got your parts. Thanks !!
Hi Ed,
As always, great content. You use the same brand for oil as I do; for my Diesel I use the "Liqui Moly 5W-30 Longtime High-Tech", but change the Oil every 10-15tkm (6-9t miles) anyway.
And I pay a free workshop to do the Oil change (I give them the oil) because I don't like this mess :D But highly appreciated you did it even with camera!
Oil is so important for modern day cars, I always wonder why people tend to exhaust the milage limitations here... It is not that costly in comparison to what can break if you don't do it.
Thanks for the video going to do this on my N63 💯
Make sure you have additional support while working under your car because sometimes the ramps can collapse thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for the tip!
@@eddiemcars Have you ever had to change your battery? does the dealer have to do it or you can program it yourself?
Great video! Thanks for the info. Try wearing 1 or 2 latex gloves on the hand you use to unscrew the drain plug. If the oil is very warm use 2 gloves otherwise you just just one will do.
Yeah the F15 50is are messy oil changes, I just did mine a few days ago as we ended up picking up a '15 x5 50i. I ended up putting a Fumoto F-104 quick drain valve on it, as they make oil changes a lot less messy. Been using one on my subie for a few years now. ( I'd recommend looking into them if you do your own oil changes, it saves time and money!) Keep up with the great videos, glad to find someone with a similar vehicle on youtube. So far I've, break fluid bleed, oil change, spark plug change all are super easy if you got the tools, next is the dreadful coolant flush >.>
The location of the drain plug and the volume that rushes out suddenly. I haven’t figured it out. I’ll look into that quick drain valve. Yes, the spark plug change was surprisingly easy. I probably have to do it again here soon since I didn’t gap them and I plan on going to a stage 1 tune. I may take it to somewhere for the coolant system. That looks like a PITA.
My 2014 BMW X50i with 85Kmi on the N63TU engine failed CA idle smog test due to failed valve stem seals. The issue is covered in a class action lawsuit Isley v. BMWNA. BMW policy is to change the engine out for a refurb and my portion of that work would be $8K. Instead, I elected to pay Brian at Performance Motorwerk in Dublin CA do the work using the superb AGA N63TU tool set. Elring 199-440 seals are the best choice. I may be among the first to be affected by this problem on the N63TU since smog tests are not needed during the first six years of a car’s life. It’s not a question of IF but WHEN this will happen to all N63TU S63TU engines, so be forewarned.
Wondering if I can change the filter before draining the crankcase on my F16 N63TU?
Wonderful design to put the oil filter under the car ...
Anyway, one advice : put a wedge behind your back wheels and a cinder block in front of your ramps, just to secure.
Thanks! I should do that next time!
Impressive video
Hello.
As the owner of an F15, so the same model, I can still give you a number of recommendations.
For added value of the vehicle, it is better to have the maintenance done by a dealer, so an official garage. There is more to it than just changing the oil.
Liqui Moly is good oil, Amsoil is better. The EURO version 5w30 is an absolute must, or the signature series. You will notice the difference including lower consumption and a smoother engine.
I switched to Amsoil on the F85. I’ll report my findings!
Dude your X5 is sooo sick! I think you might have tightened the caps a little too much tho lol.... Also, have you ever thought about putting a Fumoto drain valve on your X5? Oil flows out easily and with little mess. Might be worth looking into
Why did you decide on 5w40 vs 0w40? I just bought mine was under the impression 0w40 would give better mileage
I've been there brother. Lol. Oil all over my garage. Believe it or not I use baby powder and it cleaned it up
I’ve never tried that. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again but if it does, I’ll try the baby powder.
Im sure you will, but let us know how you go with the tuning research, very interested to boost the performance that much in the future.
Absolutely! I plan on doing a test to verify the additional performance also!
Word of the day is: GLOVES......Play it safe Mr. Edward...........also safety goggles.. I installed the ValvoMax Stainless Oil Drain Valve on my X6M - with the Stainless Drain Hose Attachment. There is no mess etc. It makes oil changes so much more easier.
Good tips. I need to get comfortable with wearing gloves.
Hey Edward. Great video. Did you happen to see the ValvoMax Drain Plug that Piper Phillips was mentioning? I saw it on Amazon and I'm also considering putting it on my F15. Please check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks.

What’s your tent percentage? Thinking it will look really nice on my 2015 X5 50i
Hi, it’s 3M 20% color stable on all the windows including covering the factory tint on the rear glass. Here’s a detailed video on it. czcams.com/video/Ca_ssXJB_gA/video.html
I am about to change the rear brake pads and rotors for my F15 X5, do you require to put it in service mode to release the electric parking brake? I read somewhere F15 is still using the tradition standard drum-style parking brake assemblies?
Leon L you’re correct, it’s still using the standard drum style for the parking brake, so the caliper so should remove easy.
@@eddiemcars Thank you so much, I was a bit worried and was going to send it to my mechanic as I don't want to manually retract the actuator and don't have access to a scan tool either - should be a simple job then!
Leon L yes, I was worried too. I changed my rear pads and was thinking I would need the same tool.
Now I didn’t remove the rotor but I can hope that the E parking brake is released enough so it comes off.
What brand ramps did you buy and do you recommend them? Thanks!
I use these. amzn.to/2O4yMv1
I highly recommend them. They don’t slide when driving on them and I feel comfortable underneath the car.
Spills happen! I usually throw a large piece of cardboard under the cars when working on them.
Makes clean up a breeze!
That's a good idea!
Probably should have removed the shield first but over all thx for the vid.
Follow your 9 quarts advice and oil level is only in the middle of min and max. Should I add more to hit the max?
Yes, add a half quart more.
Blessed
Can you send me a link to the ramps you used. Thanks 😎👍
Here you go!

@@eddiemcars Thank you!
Oil filter should have oil in it before installing to lessen chance of lubrication system running dry
"3/8" drive and "1/2/" , no 3/4 . Thx for the posts, I have been getting a lot out of your X5 vids lately
How many miles do you have on your X5 if you don’t mine me asking.
I had 64k before I sold it.
What about brake fluid? You have a video?
Brake Fluid isn't too bad if you have a speed bleeder. No video yet.
Damn bro.. i was gonna try this but not anymore lol
You’ll be ok. I’m an amateur!
this honestly scares me a little to do on my X5 M now
It’s not bad. The hardest part is the drain. It splashes. The last time I did it on the M(not on video) it was perfect. No even a drop was spilled.
How reliable is the N63 engine? I've heard nothing but bad things about it.
The 1st gen N63 got a bad reputation. The 2nd and 3rd generation is much more improved! Not near as many the problems as 1st generation.
@@eddiemcars I see this M5 doing double duty, tote the kids back and forth to school and hauling the motorcycle to the track. And doing both in style!
It will do it without a problem!
How do you dispose of the old oil
I take it AutoZone. Most part stores will dispose of it.
@@eddiemcars you just take it in the pan like that? Lol
@@perrslice lol you can if you want, but it could get messy.
I pour it into a separate container for transport.

@@eddiemcars ah. Perfect. Thanks bro. Love your channel. Inspired me to buy my 2016 xdrive50i with 23k miles back in February 2021
Do you work in the cath lab Edward?😊
Yes I do!
@@eddiemcars sweet, me too!!
😎👍👍👍
Does your car burn oil?
I burn a quart of oil in around 5,000 miles. Not too bad.
any oil consumption?
Half a quart every 5,000 miles
@@eddiemcars thanks
Good video. I highly support you my brother but please get to the point
Thanks for the support! I thought you guys like the useless vlogging before the videos?🤣
Edward M Cars too old and attention span too short brother. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about my vehicle by looking at your videos so please keep them coming.
yoloomis Noted. I’ll keep them coming and I appreciate your feedback and support!
Next time wipe it clear under, well I dont know if you did that after the video
I did, there was oil still sitting on some parts, they left a few drops on the garage floor after I cleaned it up.
Video was never showing important parts just blue tarp like where did rubber gasket go
I hate my x5 it take so much petrol. Is your one diesel?
No, mine is a gasoline V8.
Why does everything in the video to include your garage floor and tools look pristine and new? They mustn't see much use.Nitrile gloves and floor epoxy are your friend.
Short answer.
Tools are new, my last set was stolen, and house is 3 years old.
Would having the car on ramps unlevel the car therefore preventing all the oil from dripping out? Why the F is the filter underneith the car. The F15 35i is just a plug making it much easier and faster to change the oil. Too bad youre on the west coast. I get all my oil change and parts from FCP. Lifetime warranty even on used oil. Buy an oil change kit for $60, mail back all the old stuff for $20, and get my $60 back. Total cost for a DIY synthetic oil change and filter for this and my GTI is the postage of $20 here in NY.
I can try it. From other cars I’ve changed the oil in the plug is usually at the back of the pan instead of under it which helps the oil flow out instead of pouring out uncontrollably.
I wish the design of the V8 was similar to the I6 for the oil filter placement. That would make it much easier.
That's a shit set-up for draining the oil as well as the filter. Why does it have to be vertical? Just to make it messy and make you want to say f it I'll pay a tech to get oily.
Might be worth remembering that oil will behave like water and drain THROUGH your paper concrete protection that's laid out. How many times had you performed this oil change? Has it been a sh*t show every time? I'm gonna have to but my 14Qt pan up on blocks to catch more oil, I just hope that it will actually drink up the oil into the inside of the actual jug fast enough....yikes, let the good times roll
I’ve done it probably 6 times now.
I purchased a deeper oil drain pan to prevent the splashing that happens with the plug is pulled. I get some occasional specs but nothing like that “s*** show “ you saw on the video 🤣
