Having watched it thrice and therefore ~45 minutes, I've now watched almost as much of the last 15 minutes of this episode as I have all of NuTrek. It's so awful. People talk me into checking "the best" episode of some new series out and it's adults speaking like 14 year olds and bickering on bridge sets that don't look functional. At least Mike eating board game pieces makes sense in the RLM canon.

At its soul, Trek is about a chain of naval commanders on a cramped submarine, radioing the engine room, and DS9 brilliantly brought in a tiny ship, the Defiant, just to get off the station for some submarine battles. Sometimes getting back to basics can also revive the ethos.

A star trek movie like they said, the villian just wants to unite all species under one banner because his homeworld only recently became a part of the greater galaxy and was nearly wiped out.
It's not that he dislikes the Federation, he just believes that if they have the resources to better other planets they should, which heavily goes against the Prime Directive.
Then at the end, Kirk realises that the villain isnt that horrible, and that the device he has is actually going to save a world for annihilation so as the villain is dying, Kirk decides to trust him and doesn't stop the machine.
The Federation is of course furious, but Kirk tells them he was simply too late to stop the device but he's also glad he didn't since a species is getting a second chance. The crew has his back and they continue on, swearing to hold to the Prime Directive as best as possible but also not forget the lesson that everyone deserves a second chance.

The Tuvix episode might be my favorite one from Voyager. It really sums up all the problems with the show when the captain drags a literally screaming person off the bridge to execute them, and the holographic doctor refuses to perform the operation since it violates every ethical value it was programmed with, so the captain just does it herself with no real attempt by the crew to explore alternatives. The Voyager crew isn't like the flagship Enterprise crews. They're the C students of the federation, and boy does it show.

Regarding the song sabotage showing up in the first Star Trek, it wasn’t a radio station, it was like an mp3 player of Kirk’s step dad’s. The car was his step dads and it was a classic ancient relic. Clearly important to step dad.
I think the use of the song fit because it was part of his step dads obsession with these old things. It makes sense that his step dad would drive it around and listen to the old music.

I actually thought for a second that the "no dog in the film" was a reference to the movie about the battle for Wake Island. Since the garrison was either killed or captured, no one knew what really happened when they made the film, so they just made a 1940s movie, and there was a dog. In an interview with a group of Wake Island veterans, when asked what they thought of the movie, one of the Marines instantly quipped "Well first off, we didn't have a dog".

Why cant they have a Star Trek villain who isn't "revenge man?" The show had plenty of examples of that. You could have a character whose ideals conflict with the philosophy of star fleet, that would challenge the views of Kirk on a deeper level, rather than on just a superficial "im gonna destroy earth" level. There could even be a level of respect between them, despite being adversaries. And you could still have massive battles and popcorn action as a backdrop to this.
