  • I took "Thumper" a Yamaha XT550 over the weekend. The weather was great. I can understand why XT550 owners love these bikes. Best viewed in HD

Better condition than mine but eventually I will sort it out 🤞. I had the good luck to come across a side casing with good pickup coils which I believe is the number one cause of death for these lovely machines so I have a spare 🙏. Mine is currently waiting for the wheels to be respoked. I got a CDI unit from a guy in Belguim which solves a lot of issues. You can programme it from a laptop to suit what you want.

You have the famous loose balance shaft knock like the rest of us have had if the Cdi goes bad, most prominent at idle and off idle goes away but you can here it under load

I bought one in the early eighties cheap because it had the exact same knock. Very easy fix as it turned out much to my surprise.

Great video man. What's the muffler you've got on there? Just getting into the world of XT and want to improve my sound!

Cheers, glad you like it. I purchased the muffler really cheaply and the it sounds awesome (the video doesn't do the sound justice). the link is here to the shop www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/short-universal-megaphone-silencer.html

Really nice bike and a great video, I've had my own XT550 for about 4 years now and have been working on it in the winter and riding it in the summer. Where did you get your header pipes from? Mine are after market but need replacing and wasn't sure if there was somewhere to get them off the shelf. Also love the sound from the silencer. Cheers, Ian from Herts

Hello Ian. Thanks for the comment. The exhaust pipe came with the bike but the can came from Classic Bike Shop (link below) great price too. Had a few problems this summer and the bike has undergone a full top end rebuild including new piston and rings, valves, head skimmed, pot re-bored, new timing chain, new oil pump, new camshaft. As you will know parts can be hard to come by now and took a couple of months to find all of the above from all over the world so any UK suppliers that you know of would be great? Cheers

It is definitely a challenge finding parts. My bike wasn't loved by its previous owners and was in a sorry state when I got it. My engine is in pretty good order though with good compression and very little wear in the top end when I inspected it. The tank was plastic and I the nearest original one I could find was in Germany. There a number of forums that talk about donor parts from other bikes that fit the XT550 but even those parts aren't easy to come by. I have generally used Wemoto or Fowler Parts, who have a limited stock of original parts for our bike. Otherwise I spend time looking over ebay etc. It seems the XT550 is huge in Greece but there aren't too many details about what they do to theirs.Always happy to share whatever info I have, but yours does look tidier than mine.Ian

Robert that was filmed before a complete top end re-build, re-bored, new piston and rings, new camshaft, new timing chain, head skimmed, valves refurbished, new oil pump, new clutch, new brakes front and rear. The petrol tank has been resprayed together with period decals, side panels front and rear mud guards resprayed, engine and casings repainted. I will be putting it all back together this weekend (if the weather holds) and will make a brief video and post it up on here ;)
