Beautiful bike, it really looks so right! The 550 was my first big bike when I was a teenager, so I felt that I had to have one as grown up. And of course it has the right colour - red! But hey... "enormous horsepower?" ;)
Loved mine and I got lots of tickets for riding wheelies lol. Bought my 82 in 85 and being 6'4 going over logs I would go through skid plates up here in the NW.
I remember sitting out in the surf and regularly seeing two guys riding these bikes doing wheel-stands the length of a 300 meter road then holding the wheel-stand up a hill @ maybe 80kmh. I wanted one so bad.
My dad owns one too. Over the last year we restored it a bit and switched a couple of pieces (he had a 600cc engine instead of the original one and a miff exhaust that is illegal here in Germany). Currently I'm the one riding it and I think it is one of the best beiginner bikes. Not alot of hp, light, and handles beautiful. It is not completely original as my dad switched the original fork and drumbreak for a discbreak and a fork from an xt600.
Had one 82 model with forks and disc from the 600 for 14 years perfect for everything except the big highways. Easy to maintain a lots of fun in gravel or going down creeks but you can't travel on highway with 2 people over 130. Sold it to travel shity highways.
I had the exact bike was sweet for the year! My apartment complex was saying it needed to be parked elsewhere not infront of my truck. I couldn't find a garage close by to store it plus I'm in Idaho. Winter don't ride much. I gave it to my father inlaw. I want another one but need to move to a house . Sad 😔.
I had the exact same bike. Brought it brand new. These had a bit of a flat spot on excelleration if I remember correctly. You could get a kit for them that would fix that though. Mine was ok when warmed up so didn't get the kit. Yeah roll on power in 3rd and up came the front wheel if you had the revs rite. I put a Metzler 460-18 Enduro tire on the rear of mine. It was the only tire I could keep on it for any length of time. The original Bridgestone lasted 1800km. I didn't ride it hard. These bikes loved rear tires... Bit sorry I sold it but family & kids come first

A nut case lol join the party..I used to have the '77 '79 500 thumper back in the 70's loved them. I bought this bike last year but my rt hip is bad and cant start it, so I bought a XR650 for the electric start..Im selling my CBR RR 1000 any takers??
It's also got the famous 1982 , 1983 550 and later 600 and so on loose crank balancer bolt knock issue noise so easy to fix just have to take the clutch basket off, then smooth and quiet, he probably sold it too cheap because of this stuipid issue with the XT's, anyway nice video. Reg Riemer

Beautiful! I had an 82 125, but wish I'd bought one with a bigger engine. Lots of fun though.

I bought the XT250 back in 82 for $1499. The XT550 was just $300 more. Wish I'd gotten the 550!
