"What years your les paul" "94" "oh"
Lol.I just watched that interview.
And just walk away
what about doing a "sounds like" video comparing the budget one (under 1500£) and a proper full on rig with no budget to see and hear the differences? Btw, love your videos as always! :D
+Thomas Calvi that's a cool idea, I second this.
That's a cool idea
Excellent idea!!!!
i concur with this man's idea. :)
great idea
You guys should do some of these for bassists. Tool is a perfect example of a band where the bass player is a huge factor in their overall sound.
12:51 I know this video is super old, but that literally sounds just like the main bass riff in Pneuma
Parker Bennink holy shit cut really does
Eerily similar lol wtf
It shows that the writing on the new album was about as good as some random tool fan just noodling around
@@the3pista1c you do better
Dive_in_Me Ya got me
well...I need to go and listen to Tool now
+hondansx1000 This saddens me.. too many people have never given tool a chance yet they are so huge. Started with a cult following. I have been a fan since opiate... day 1. Give them a listen, I especially like lateralus. One of the best most powerful live bands in history btw... fact.
+Alan Hinton oh no no no...my mistake...i'm a huuuge fan of tool been listening to them since for a long while now...i just hadn't listened to them in a good month or so, so thought it would be a good idea to put on Lateralus or 10,000 days
+hondansx1000 oh haha. My mistake as well.. I'm in that boat also - Been a while since I've really blasted a tool album. Cheers man!
***** Far less than most bands I would say. But to each their own.
+Matthew Andrews yeah mine was Ænima (copy/ paste baby!) i always tried not to listen too often because i hated the thought of tiring myself on my favorite album... maybe in a year or two, go back and listen and it'll be awesome again
Please do Sound Like A Tool!!
+Birdy Wings HAHA
lol ikr
+Birdy Wings I can already do that without going near the bank!!
+Birdy Wings Start with a mesa cab clone and go from there.
Check rob chapmans vids.
Sound like Tool, but on bass guitar, PLS, just PLS
simple, get a Wal bass. :^)
Aspiniou Yeah, but they're very expensive. If you could like me a cheap one, I'd take that answer haha.
Then get a MusicMan Stingray
No, getting a Wal or any other bass will NOT magically sound like either Justin Chancellor or Paul D'Amour (which would be a Rickenbacker). These guys get their sound from a combination of bass, signal chain, and playing technique.
Helium Road Yeah, but the Wal gets you 90% there. Look up the video Justin Chancellor's Tone With a Wal my toolmybass. He gets amazingly close with just a Wal through a DI. The rest only really takes some subtle drive, and some time practicing the picking technique.
'Early 90's Les Paul Custom'
They're 79's, Adam told people his were 94's so they wouldn't bother him with vintage guitar chat
Sound like electric wizard.
this
+countjulu MORE FUZZ
+countjulu Yes! That would be hilarious. Or Sunn O)))...
+countjulu YES! or Sleep!
+whiteninja2006 pretty soon, Andertons will have to turn to extreme metal as they run out of artists to emulate... by 2018 we'll be getting stuff like "How to sound like Gnaw Their Tongues for €1500"
Yeah we really need a "BY busting the bank for these guys"
Make it happen!
A Bond u need 4 different amps at once
Also, how about a "Sound like Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath"? Quite a quintessential band if you ask me, and worth it of adding to the series.
+whiteninja2006 that way they'll have the excuse to use laney combos instead of using the same marshall over an over again xD
+whiteninja2006 Very simple rig. Gibson SG, Laney signature combo and a ton of gain. Possibly a delay pedal but I can't remember Iommi using many effects other than overdriving the amps to hell (quite literally depending on the song).
James Lewis From what I recall, he used a Rangemaster Treble Booster into a Laney Klipp back in the day... but it would still be interesting to see how these guys would replicate that sound. :)
+whiteninja2006
Even my high school "How to Play Guitar" class had that one...
I don't think he uses the treblebooster anymore, he said one time his guitar tech lost it after a mod on his amp (the one his signature is modeled after i think) maybe the only one using a treblebooster out there is Brian May, that's an interesting piece of gear
Sound like tool BY BUSTING THE BANK
Lol his guitar is from the 70s and it is a Silverburst that the finish fading makes it look greenish
Adam jones stated very clearly his guitar is from the 80s.
I died when he said 90's
"It's a 94"
@@MrSulforlmao, exactly. t I can't believe how little research went into Adams rig. Love these guys though, maybe they were purposely adding to the tool "mystique" by throwing viewers off. Anyone who's done 15 minutes of research of Adams rig knows he's playing a '79 silverburst with a defect that tints the paint green over time, and one of 'em has a screw in it lol
Do sound like Mars Volta for under 1.5k. That'd be a challenge with all the eleventy hundred pedals involved.
+Pan Damasque Really, all you'd need is a HOG (with expression pedal), DD7 and a BF3. All his pedals are just octavers or delays or chorus/phaser/flangers. Get an orange combo, and you can really cheep out on the guitar--Omar preferred that 'cheap guitar' sound in TMV.
+Pan Damasque now there's a challenge i'd like to watch.
Bullshit man that is even easier. Omar uses a line 6 M-9. You can get the M-5 version for $100 used. Bam. Every effect Mars Volta uses in one badass pedal. Plus he uses Shitty one pickup guitar and orange normal distortion. That tone can be recreated with a boss ds-1 and literally any amp. I can cover any Volta song to the T for less than $500 rig total.
+KodyXXVll I would like to see that. I dont mean it sarcastically - I'd like to see it. Do it!!
YESSSS! It is here. been waiting for this video - I assume like so many others - not for the gear (tool fans already know what's up) but mainly for the nostalgia of simply watching you and matt do a sounds like for tool. Thanks for listening to all the subscribers suggestions to make this vid guys! Also, for anybody curious - Adam runs a Marshall super bass with the channels wired together and he ran a jcm very early on. He swapped his mesa for the vh4 at around the laterals tour id reckon. Marshall and mesa cabs almost exclusively with a Riviera here and there.
Tip for anyone trying to get Adam's tone, he doesn't use very much distortion/overdrive. Wah pedals are great for solos and mess with the bass/mids on amp some. that's how I achieved my tones for him
What amp do you use?
i was hoping you'd get the bass in there too cause you cant have tool without bass.
Amen brother I'm with you on that I am a bass player myself and you got it right there is nothing like the tool bass lines go Justin go
@@chrisfrakes400 Tool made me stop instinctively spitting on bassists
We're still waiting for Sound Like Gary Moore
Pleaseeee stop ignoring this request. He is my all time favourite!
+ByNoMeans Looking at his real gear:
Squier guitar, Tiny Terror (original gear), Tube Screamer (original gear), a chorus pedal and a delay pedal (such as the combo The Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy) and a reverb pedal.
Gary Moore: Les Paul and DSL...again!
+ByNoMeans Its the same video with the same gear, or any other gear, except they substitute the technique of an actual badass guitar player playing something cool instead of the 13 yr old with headphones tooling around with a pod sound .lol
+ByNoMeans les paul 59 + sexy amp done
I'm from the U.S. and I like the videos that start at the pub. It gives a unique perspective of UK life and mixing it with music. I do like all of the videos so keep up the good work. You all deserve a serious raise!!!
His guitars are gibson silverburst 1979 and has like 4 or 5 others around that year. they get that green color over time. love them.
I'd love to see a sounds like Deftones
Billy Gaskell I second this
Billy Gaskell Third this
Billy Gaskell fourth?
First albums is easy, just a humbucker guitar and hi-gain amp does the trick... for most of the songs like My Own Summer...I suprised that i got the tone with Tokai Love Rock and Laney TI15-112 amp.
JUST FUCKIN' DO THIS!!!
Sounds like Lamb of God. :D Loved the video been waiting for this one for a long time.
This got me into tool now I love them and the tones Adam Jones gets and how simplistic but effective his riffs are
This is probably the best Sound Like video you guys did. Right on point!
Please do sounds like dream theater
I think they're backed up request wise as I literally see this every video but I'd like that too
+Jubel Thomas its not a marshall tone so i doubt they'll do it. lol.
+Jubel Thomas Line 6 dt25, evh wolfgang standard or music man sterling, ibanez tubescreamer, Ph3 phase shifter, mxr evh flanger, maybe a compressor and you'd be good to go
well you're missing a delay and reverb. along with the whole wet/dry thing.
GuitarFreak1901 I never knew John petrucci played a similar rig to evh
can we get 'Sound Like A Tool - While Busting The Bank'?
A Zombie guitar, Boss Metal Zone distortion, solid state Ibanez amp with bass, treble and gain cranked up and the mids scooped completely. There you go. You sound like a tool.
you basically just described Dimbag's bedroom rig. are you calling Dimebag a tool?
+Mox_au I don't like his tone a lot, but the tone doesn't matter. He used to play like a damn God.
Mox_au Nah, probably a corpse though.
awesome job! especially on the tone for Right in Two! Killed it!
I enjoyed this episode so much! When you played The Pot, it sounded just like the album. Great work!
That Epiphone looks fantastic.
+adam872 It did look like a really good guitar. Especially with those Gibson US pickups.
thank god the old style is back, more sounds like where they look in the shop
Just super incredible and super informative video. Keep up the good work
well that was incredible, not heard any Tool before but will be getting a couple of there albums ASAP. The sound you got from this right is totally my style and I love it. good job lads.
let's have a "Sound Like early Soungarden" bit fellas
SOUND LIKE DEF LEPPARD Please
yes
+Dino Vario Why?
+Todd McCracken because there are 2 guitar players in the band.
Fair enough.
Thank you guys so much for making this!
glad you guys went back to this format!
Man those new Epiphones look sweet! I want the Gibson name but wow! and the satin neck is a plus!
I was told that the drummer plays without a click track. Given those insane time signature changes, that's freaking unbelievable.
I get a decent Adam Jones tone with my Schecter PT Fastback 2 (humbuckers/singles coil tap), a Tech21 Double Drive, Phase90 an EQ and a DD7. TS9 for a boost if needed. Bassbreaker15 combo.
My favorite one yet! Beautiful!
this is awesome. great idea and well executed. thanks!
I got a few suggestions/requests :P
Sound like:
Buckethead
Radiohead
Devin Townsend
I had one or two more but I forgot :)
Griffin Young The Used, too
DasOmen02 I'd love to hear a Devin Townsend.
DasOmen02 devyyyyyyy
I mean, devy does gearwhore, so it shouldn't be 100% difficult
Buckethead: be a alien with infinite talent
i have watched this like 5 times but the laterus cover at the beginning always annoys me because he drops tempo by like 40 bpm
Awesooooooome !!!! Well done. The best sound like video ;)
well done! love it!
Could do with a series like this for bass players as well. If you could start with Tool that would be great.
They haven't released an album since 2006, yea yeeah, they are really deep band. :D
10 Years deep eh!?
Considering how much effort goes into perfection quit crying, theres nothing new out there that even holds a candle to their stuff that's 15 years old!
I was just quoting the video, not hating :/
Thanks guys, i was one of the folks who requested this on the last vid, appreciated, really good insight, i knew some of what AJ's set up was, but the best bit was the eq stuff, was very helpful. thanks guys, very much apprectiated
P.s. Rabea, you are a great guitarist, you manage to do great on these vids, and i have heard toska, and you have your own style as well with your own stuff, respect :D
Glad you guys listen to your fans and are back in the shop.
Thought the title was "Sound Like a Tool".
+Probably British as in, you don't think it sounds like tool? or so it should be cooled 'sound like adam jones'
+Rabea Massaad he thought, at first, the title was 'Sound like "A" tool... As in sound like an idiot haha
+David Oakes you're crazy
+michael spence tool is not really used in the uk as an insult.
+Levy Charleston I know, I'm from the UK mate😂
You played lateralus intro in the beginning WAY wrong and it killed me inside😵
Yeah, it was way too slow, I though the same thing 😂
To be fair.....it was almost all wrong. Riffs, tones, the lot.
It was like two notes off relax, you can't expect them to learn them perfectly, the video is called sound like tool not how to play lateralus
@@ionkap1024 yea, 2 notes in each bar. And it's not like it's that hard to get right
Same
Thank you for doing this! It's nice to see you guys actually read comments and see what we want instead of personal tastes only.
Parabol is spot on. Sends shivers up the spine. Good job!
can you do sound like Mars Volta
Sound like Chevelle!!
Acid Drop Baby lol yes please
Yes
The Sounds Like series has come a long way from where it started, every video seems to be an improvement from the last! I'm glad to finally see a Sound Like Tool, very nice and well-done. I really hope a Sound Like Radiohead is coming soon!
Really enjoyed this
I was the first kid on my block to have the FIRST Tool album.I ruined a whole block with a sound that NOBODY even tryed to duplicate.
Terry Franks for being the truest fan you just won the internet
OGT... back in 92... the first EP
Lmao no one asked
*tried 🤦♂️😂
Adams Les Paul customs are all actually from '79 to '82 I believe. He tells people the early 90s as a joke because people tend to stop asking him about them.
I play bass and yet I want to buy this setup now. Huge Tool fan as I love the unique sounds and odd time measure playing they have.
You guys did a good job on this one. Tool is my favorite band. Now I need more gear..
Re do sound like Metallica?
+Jordan Martin This has been commented so many times, they haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave to do it
ivse "re do"
Simple. Laney IronHeart and any guitar with active EMG's
+Sam Ambrose-Taylor mesa dual rectifier*
Brendon stacey They actually used Mark 2C+
What about added the stipulation of not being able to use a DSL combo for a bit? haha
Such a classic sound. Sounds right on.
Awesome video very helpful thanks
anyone here excited for tools new album
yeah i'm happy my grandchildren will listen to it
+Jesus Christ XD
John Constantine lol
Hells yeah, ten years and counting, dude.
F.U.Q.D.U.P. XD
sounds like a perfect circle
Octave chords
The clean tones were really good! The distortion was really close too. Good job guys!
FINALLY! I've been hoping you guys would eventually do Tool!
sound like I would like to see: Sonic Youth Green Day the Ramones Nickelback(as a joke) Sound Garden
Sounds like Deftones!!!! Please, such an awesome tone
I think the thing I enjoy about these videos is that they showcase allot of the mid range guitars that you don't necessarily see in the Chapman videos such as Epiphone! Love all the videos but Epiphone has been my brand for years and it does me glad to see more Epiphones :)
One of my favorites... Spot on.
He uses late 70's/early 80's les paul custom silverburst.
You NEED to do Jerry Cantrell!
Dale Barber there's an Alice In Chains
That was amazing!!
I absolutely fell in love with Tool again just from hearing that fantastic Jambi riff! And I was listening to Tool right before I found this video.
when he played lateralus wrong i cringed and right in two as well, now jambi. BEA PLZ
I don't learn from tabs dude, I've never seen Adam play these riffs, I just work them out on the spot listening to the tunes.
I can understand if you're a fan and have learned how to play them exactly the same, that watching this might be annoying. But bare in mind that we don't have all the time to spend learning the Songs note for note. I also can't read tabs, or score for that matter!
+Rabea Massaad if you have an iPhone just download the songsterr app on your phone :S you will be able to read all the tabs in the world (yes there are 3 Dörje songs tabbed haha) in a matter of secounds and it really really is not time consuming :)
***** I am just givin ya shit man, ive studied tool's music for a while so i know how to play 90% of their music. Thanks for the upload.
+Rabea Massaad Wow really? How'd you get so good at guitar? I guess always learning by ear would turn you into a beast... I couldn't do it. Is there some secret?
+Joseph Brandenburg i play completely by ear, and it is extremely helpful. if you want to develop your ear, i suggest this; pick a radio station (preferably one with lots of guitar music, like a classic rock station or something), leave the radio on, and pick up your guitar. try to play, or improvise over every single song that comes on; even if you've never heard the song before, or if you don't like the song. just play along with everything, no matter what, for about an hour at a time (or longer if you're having fun). i did this when i started playing at age six, and i recommend it to everyone who asks me how they can learn to play by ear. it takes time, but this is a great method. even just sitting by the tv and playing along with/soloing over commercials is helpful, just to a lesser extent. hope this helps you, friend!
Do a Johnny Ramone sounds like or Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols
+SamVacant Oh, HELL YES!!!
+SamVacant steve= les paul custom. fender amp. CRANKED. or a marshall.
johnny. p90 guitar/tele crunch gain. simples
Bad Motivator We know, duh. It's more for fun.
+SamVacant for johnny, just grab a tele, a cranked marshall, and you're there. it would still be a cool video though, and might convince people that teles are great guitars for punk. (nobody seems to believe me when i say this.)
Nice. EDIT: Vicarious outtro. Solid Rabea. Solid.
I have been waiting so long for TOOL👍🏻
Adam Jones uses an old analog Boss BF-2, not the BF-3.
Next Sounds Like Buckethead please :)
Really enjoyed this one! Either Rabea likes his ill voice, either he's getting used to the camera, but it was great. I feel like he opened up.
About time boys!!!
To me the amp settings felt wrong. Might just be that I'm missing the sound of Justin's orgasmic GK head, but the bottom sounded a little too boxy and hollow. Maybe pull back a bit on the gain and turn up the bass? Maybe a bit too much presence? I dunno.
To be honest, the biggest challenge was trying to work out if it sounded close without the bass tone there. Because they're so married together I actually shelved all the bass out to see if I could hear just what the guitar was doing.
+Rabea Massaad as a long time tool fan, I'd say you guys did a decent job. Shame you couldn't find a Silverburst Les Paul though ;)
+Rabea Massaad Only thing would have been to turn the feedback on the delay down a bit. Or maybe the wet/dry mix. The delay was more present than I recall on the recordings.
+Chris McCartney Might just be the fact they're using an Epiphone, I tried a bunch in the shop when I was after a new guitar and they all had that kind of boxy tone. Lots of top end and bass but lacking in the mids. Nice guitars for the money but not what I was after.
+GarethFlatlands ist an epi with gibson humbuckers, it sounds identical to a gibson
pretty please do a sounds like Dave Navarro
I second this
Ewww, seriously?
gdawgs101 yeah, I like his work with Jane's. What of it?
+sam holik Nothing, I thought you might be trolling.
+gdawgs101 the funny thing is that I've been requesting this for the longest Damn time and this is the first time anybody has cared
This and the incubus are my favorites love this simple rig and amazing guitar and sounds. I guess I like extremes be it complex like Mikey from incubus or simple set up like Adma and unique tones
You guys do a great job!
Sound like Bring Me The Horizon/Lee Malia please? cos matt was holding his signature epiphone so that surely is foreshadowing a sound like bring me the horizon
William Allison agreed
Sound like system of a down?
Those tool riffs are just so good! Saw them at Brixton Academy - what an experience!
I just saw tool and I had to rewatch this after. decent job guys. tool is amazing live!!!
the distortion parts honestly didn't sound much like tool
yes they did, they sounded a lot like tool!
sounded nothing like Adam's tone... a lot of shit was wrong
no volume pedal?
Agree, but the purpose is to "Sound Like Tool" not "Play Like Tool".
I have the JCM 2000 DSL401, with the 4 el84 rather than the el34's I agree Marshall's 40 watt series of amps are really versatile, and sound amazing. Great video, guys!
You play Tool quite well I must say. Very nice to hear your take on the riffs! Shocked that The Pot was your first song though.
The wah he uses is a 535Q, if anybody is wondering.
These guys didn't even get close.......
Terry Hesticles *BB535
AntonioPPK_643 535q😂
Please do a Sound Like Randy Rhoads....
i love the sounds like series, especially when there snatching up the gear in the store
great job fellas!
