- In this video, we discuss and answer the question on Why is Naruto called Naruto Uzumaki instead of Naruto Namikaze? Why was his Last name not changed to Namikaze after the revelation of the 4th Hokage Minato Namikaze being Naruto's father? Naruto could have been the head of the Namikaze clan, giving Boruto the family name of Boruto Namikaze, but this didn't happen.
What was the reason? We break it all down in this video, we also explain the naming system in Konoha, as why Kushina Uzumaki might have brought Minato into her Family due to having a more reputable clan.

The Uzamaki clan was feared by many villages and nations including Konaha. They were also hated as well. Only difference is the uzamaki never made an alliance with Konaha or many other great nations. So when they were wiped out. No one batted an eye. The uchiha clan was highly respected and guarded at one point. They had a treaty with some nations and konoha being there main source of what they called home. Until the point of the nine tails attack the uchiha were getting mistreated and no longer trusted. Leading to a coup da ta. Than leading to there own downfall and eventually massacre.
Also, the uchiha were known because they were the police force of konaha. The namikaze or Uzumaki clan were known for their sealing jutsus. Hense why Minato was able to seal him. Also. Uzumaki clan was wiped out due to natural causes by enemies because minato was strong enough to win the third great ninja war and took out one thousand enemies alone. So he died due to facing a tailed beast basically because he’s so op he had to die. And furthermore. The uchiha were slaughtered out of protection, but they didn’t know that second part and just assumed itachi was a rouge shinobi. IMO I blame the third hokage for being the worst hokage. He couldn’t even protect his own village. Died against Orochimaru who also wanted to be hokage but got rejected. And let danzo call the shots who also wanted to be hokage .then he called sasuke a prodigy but failed to realize that tailed beasts were meant for tools of war and to balance out power.
If they hid the fact that kushina was pregnant then why was she walking around the village clearly pregnant. Remember when she saw baby sasuke

Even if he had the name Namikaze, it wouldn't have changed the fact that he was the jinchuuriki, and the people of the village would have spread rumours that he murdered his own mother and father and destroyed his own village. On top of that, people who knew the Yellow Flash would target him and the villagers might hand him over in scorn unless the Third Hokage protected him BETTER in that universe instead of leaving him as an orphan. He would have been more arrogant for being the son of the Fourth Hokage, but that would be offset by the villagers hatred at being reminded that the Nine-Tails killed him.
That's my thoughts on it. It was just easier saying he's an Uzumaki orphan.
@@Iskaid I don't think the villagers would've been like that If they'd known minato was his father because the title of hokage carries much respect and admiration in the hearts of the villagers. Minato fought to protect them from the nine tails rampage. Sure a lot of people died but knowing that loss do you think they'd still target Naruto knowing his loss was as great as theirs. Naruto would have probably been praised for his burden and sacrifice of being the one to shoulder a monster so that others may not have too.
@@sungjin-woo820 True, but the Fourth Hokage was loved by the entire village (save for many Uchiha who wanted Fugaku to be Hokage), and the Nine-Tails killed him and his wife, and Danzo would have still been in the picture to ruin the image of Naruto. There would have been many people like Shikaku Nara, Kakashi, and the Third who would would defend Naruto from the people who abused him (which would be reduced from the amount in the actual story) but there would be many people who adored the Fourth Hokage who would hate Naruto for being the jinchuuriki of the beast that destroyed the village. Being the Hokage's son, though, would put more respect in many villagers eyes though, even if it brings up bitter memories in some.
We don't know for sure, but that's my view.

Family names in Japan have legal ramifications. Inheritance, debt, responsibilities, etc.
It's not too uncommon for men to take the wife's family name for such reasons. It's like being legally adopted into that family.

The way it works in Japan and presumably in the Naruto world, is that the clan or family of a higher status is the name used. Namikaze was more or less a no name family, Minato was a prodigy that came from an everyday family, probably a non-shinobi family. Uzumaki on the other hand was a clan of similar status to Uchiha or Senju before they were disbanded and for the most part, wiped out. The exception to this is Hinata becoming an Uzumaki, but she probably had to give up her position as heiress to the Hyuga clan to accept Naruto's last name, that's probably why Hanabi is now the heiress to the Hyuga clan. If she marries, it's a very strong possibility that her husband takes the Hyuga name. Look at Sai for example, he had no real family or even a last name, so he took Ino's last name and he is now Ino Yamanaka, Mitsuki would do something similar when he ever gets married, so if he were to get married to Sarada, for example, Sarada would remain the "heiress" of the Uchiha clan, so-to-speak, and Mitsuki would become Mitsuki Uchiha.

Yeah, I agree. Even if Minato and Kushina did not die, they'd still adopt the Uzumaki surname. Uzumaki was a noble clan (albeit defunct), they are direct descendants of Kaguya (just like Uchiha, Senju and Hyuuga) and the clan used to be some kind of warlords and Whirlpool village used to be some kind of a fief to them.
Hinata did not give up her heiress position. Her father ousted her from the position in favor of Hanabi, whom he saw as more fitting and competent. That was also the reason why Hiashi did not care if Hinata served as a regular genin after graduation. She was no longer the heiress hence she was expendable. So basically, Hinata could do whatever she wanted, even drop her surname.
Meanwhile, as to Hanabi, if she marries it's gonna be another Hyuuga from their own clan who will be chosen as her groom. Clans in the narutoverse practices inbreeding (actually not just in narutoverse but in real life there is such practice). So, in other words, traditionally members of a clan marry their own blood relative, but I presume they usually choose a distant relative.

To think about it, they never said in the Naruto manga or anime that Minato and Kushina were married. If I remember they just said that Minato was Naruto's father and Kushina was his mother. 1. Because that spiral thing in Naruto is called Narutomaki which sounds like Naruto Uzumaki but this is probably just a reference.
2. Because they didn't want him to know that his last name is the same as the 4th Hokage.

@@demon5928 Not a major plothole. It seems from the series, nobody feared Uzumaki clan to be scattered after their destruction. We can see it from Karin and Nagato. No enemies tells them I should fear you because you are Uzumaki. Something different from Uchiha clan which people feared seeing just a single member of it.
