Nemesis weed - Nut grass!! 😣 Our first home a million years ago, I watered the dirt and Bermuda grass soon gave me a lawn. Mowed it really low with front throw mower. So sorry it’s not helping you Brian. ☘️🌱🌾
It's almost like Brian is watching over my garden and knows exactly what videos I need at the exact time I need them lol
OR, Brian is just another salesman.
That RoyalGarden weed puller is sweet👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I’m a 77 year old woman and I’ve been gardening since 4th grade, can’t get down on my hands and knees anymore and I’m always looking for an easier way to garden. I live in Pinckney Michigan zone 6b and we have this damn weed that looks like a 3’ tall thistle it has a beautiful pink flower, every few years the flower forms a pod, explodes and the seed plants it’s self!!!! I’ve lived in my home we built 20 years ago and every May I start pulling them out of my garden beds….Grrrrrrrrr and the leaves have pickers on them…..Grrrrrrrrr!!!
Your timing is impeccable LOL . Weeds, the bane of every gardener😂.
I bought the stand up weeding tool. In our clay, rocky soil, no weeds were harmed in my tests! Returning it.
I live in Middle Tennessee. Most common weeds, dandelions, and any grass. Only resolution I have found is simply pulling the dandelions, using a scuffle hoe (hula hoe) on the grasses, or pulling the grass in the raised beds. Yes, getting to them early is the best! Be safe and God bless!
My favorite gardening tool is my hula hoe!
Eat the dandelions. Nutritious.
I use a torch in my garden. I pre-soak the ground before doing this, it keeps the dry stuff from erupting in flames. Do NOT use it in overgrown crowded areas with dry stuff. Cut it down first.
You want to cook the plants, not start fires. I also keep a bucket of water AND the hose nearby in case anything takes off. After I finish I resoak the spots with water to take out any embers.
I have had great results with this. It cooks the seeds, preventing a great many standard weeds from growing. Anything else, I hand pick. I always hand pick around my crops, since I don't want to kill those.
I've always found that, if I moisten the soil in the area I'm going to weed, it makes the weeding so much easier.
Yes or weed after a rain shower
@@lindahillemann5880 Unfortunately, we have so few of those here where I live, except this year, of course.
Upstate ny. Blow torch the sidewalk which works well. CHICKWEED!, the bane of my existence. I love dandelions, my bees love dandelions.
I live in Florida, where Bermuda grass is literally everyone's lawn. Not only does it grow like you said, but it grows very deep. I have dig up my Bermuda grass as deep as 10" to 12". And like you said, if you don't get every bit of root, it doesn't take long, and it is back again. Sooooo, what I have to do is dig it up, getting as much as I can. Then I wait, depending on the rain, it is back again in no time. But if I dig it up again as soon as I see it, I manage to get it all. But it will grow back under the edging (6") right back into my flower beds. It is a constant fight.
Amen! Florida gardener here too and for us add also horsetail, ragweed, globe sedge, Florida Betony and my worst enemy…Chamberbitter
I spent an hour digging bermuda grass out of my zoysia. It always comes back. Weed from hell.
@@Anne-qj6xo I always thought zoysia grass chocked out other grasses
@@annmariecunningham6364 Not on a sand hill. HOA required a nice lawn, and it is a struggle.
@@Anne-qj6xo I wouldn't live in a HOA if you gave me it to me
Hand pulling the way i go it's very peaceful and me and my daughter spend a lot of time doing it it clears the mind and it's great as a father passing the knowledge down to my daughter and I think she loves it just as much as i do she's always ready to learn and help
❤I love my mom's hula hoe. It works every time, although I do have to tighten the screws often. Weeding is easy when they are small. It’s easiest after a light rain, so I stay poised for those day-after-rain weeding sessions.
I use my hula hoe every day in spring and fill a 3 gallon bucket with weeds for my chickens. By the end of June there won't be enough for the chickens. I consider this my aerobic exercise for the day. I wanted to thank you for the Hoselink info and discount code. I LOVE it! I didn't believe I would ever find the perfect hose. This is definitely it. It has saved my mental health.
Hello, yes hand pulling weeds especially when the dirt is damp or slightly wet.
Heck ya! Hand pull 90% of our weeds, very therapeutic & satisfying especially if you’re upset about something ripping those little jerks right on out for the win!
Love to video, and all your videos. I’m 73 yr old and have all those issues honed in. Love watching you .
I live in NC & have pretty much the same weeds as the rest of y'all. I also have back problems, so I try to stay on top of rows by pulling while small
But, In between & on perimeters, I find baking soda sprinkled on each month or 2 works! It's cheap & no hands & knees 😊
I’m in Texas Hill Country, beautiful scenery and Bermuda and clover is always a battle.
I'm with you. Weeding my garden with some music playing is a great way spend the summer.
I have a wide, 50 foot long, flagstone path that loves to grow weeds in all those little spaces and I don't like weeding it at all. It was a lot of work!
Last year I bought a propane weed burner and I love it. Easy to use and now the path is weed free and beautiful! I don't worry much about a fire spreading but do keep a hose close by, just in case.
Dude! Weeds are my therapist! When I was a kid, my mom thought it was a good "punishment" activity for whatever it was she thought I did wrong. 🤣. Funny thing was, I liked not having to talk to anyone and just be outside and chill with the plants. Now I still enjoy it (sort of) with my own garden.
I find hand pulling therapy if I have a stressful day the best place is in the garden pulling weeds. My most hated weed is redroot and thistles and there's some others that I do not know their names
I love hand pulling weeds. It’s so satisfying and I find it a bit relaxing! You’re the first person I’ve heard that has loved it like me. I just don’t like when the weeds get overwhelming
Thanks Brian, years ago, I put down weed guard, then rocks on top. I have assorted pot, planters on top with flowers. That was like 12 years ago and over time dirt does start to build up on top of the weed cloth, so weed seeds start sprouting. Weeds will find away. I have the one tool, it was called The Copperhead, instead of the Hula Hoe., maybe because we live in Texas, I don’t know, I’m very interested in the standing hoe you suggested, since I’m 73. It will be a game changer. Thanks for sharing. ❤
I am glad that I’m not the only one who enjoys pulling weeds by hand! It IS very therapeutic!
I am right there with you in "weeding as therapy". My hubby thinks I'm crazy but I do find it relaxing and satisfying and love the instant gratification of a neat and clean area. I find mulching to be very helpful at weed control and it's good for the plants, too. I will be looking into that stand-up weeding tool; you make it look so easy. Everything's looking good.
Please come weed at my house! LOL!
I like weeding too
I love weeding.
I hate weeding when I start, but once I get going, I really enjoy it
So good knowing I'm not the only one who considers weed pulling to be therapeutic.
The neighbors think I'm a bit off, but for me its quite relaxing, and the exercise doesnt hurt.
I just got this in the mail. My husband loves it and it works just like you said it would. Built strong. Thanks!
I'm in Iowa where Canadian thistle is a HUGE problem. After 10 years of hours upon hours of pulling them I learned that it just makes them multiply even when you get the long tap root. I've resorted to 2,4-D AMINE, a commercial herbicide used on golf courses and grazing pastures (following application directions)
I’m with you on the weeding! I tell my family it’s very Zen! Relaxes me.
I am one of those people. I dig up the dandelion and the plantain and I move it to the weed garden. I love foraging these things for their medicinal purposes. Hinbit also has medicinal purposes but it is so invasive that it is such a nuisance. Also, we have clover and some kind of tree. I'm not sure what it is, but if there's one around you will have these pop up everywhere! And it is not just a weed - it is a tree! Thanks for your videos, Brian. 🙏 Hope you are doing well! God bless you.
I just love listening to your take on whatever you are talking about. Thank you. You are the Sunshine in these 15 minute videos I watch during my day.
I have the Fiskars standing weeder. It was a lifesaver when I first moved to my place and the yard was filled with dandelions.
Well, you did it again, made me smile!! I was feeling so discouraged with the garden this morning. The weeds are getting ahead of me, I have transplants crying to be set free, my tomato frames need to be anchored before planting, it is 80+ with dry winds and the watering system isn’t set yet. Thank you thank you for your smile and candid relaxing video. Your smile has given me encouragement to head back out to the garden and pull some weeds.
Aww. Thank you 😊
You are right on when you say " catch them small " as that is the best advice ever . Nice informative video.
I agree I don’t mind weeding , I think it’s part of the love we all of for gardening, it’s like the love of seeing a seed finally showing it’s lovely face
Ps.. Yes, my nail guy gives me a hard time because I am a by-hand weed puller. There is something so satisfying about digging in the dirt and pulling weeds by hand. And that gadget just looks amazing! I'm going to have to show this video to my dad. 💜
Yes! I hand weed early in the season, before I get everything mulched with shredded straw or leaves. It’s quite satisfying to know I’m getting the roots, and I just drop them in a container and put them in the compost. Once I’ve got the mulch down I have almost no weeding to do for the rest of the season.
Glad to learn about Captain Jack’s!!
I just ordered the standing weed puller! Thank you! I had knee replacement surgery in December so this will definitely help!
Thanks Brian! Just ordered the standing weed tool as a gift for my mom!
I love the garden weeding tool. Did an area of 14 x 55 in a matter of 3 days only working for a couple hours a night.
When I’ve had all the craziness I can take from the news, I look for your videos to help me rest and recenter my mind on what is good and wholesome in the garden. Thanks for being there. Captain Jacks makes great products! I use Bug Juice to deal with bud worms and lots of other bugs not in my veg garden. I’m in central California. Bermuda Grass is just the worst weed. Someone thought it was a good idea to plant for lawns so it’s everywhere here. 😅
I agree. Weeding is very therapeutic. I love doing it.
Thank you. Great video. Going to get that weeder for sure.
I am in California zone 9b and Bermuda is by far my most hated weed. Thank you for your informative video. Very much look forward to your content.
i ve been weeding for 2 months and enjoying it the garden looks cleaner now
For small areas of weeds, I have used boiling water using something like a tea pot, pouring it over the weed and being careful not to pour it over anything else nearby. Kills crabgrass nicely. For large areas, other methods are better since it's difficult to boil a whole lot of water, but for small incidental weeds, and selecting a small area every so often, this is a good way and cheap too.
I do this every year or so for driveway cracks weeds. Just did it last week for sprouted tree roots from a neighbor’s tree. Dead within the hour.
Prickly lettuce. Finally found the name of my nemesis weeds that keep coming back. Even roundup doesn’t kill them per the web and my experience.
Working on weeds here in 8b in the Tehachapi mountains of Central California. Our most hated weeds here are wild mustard, goatheads, star thistle and some crazy thing that sends runners underground and has to be dug up and huge trails of roots pulled out. We have a similar standing weed puller called Grampa's weeder. That thing is amazing. Especially for those of us in our 70's. Gets those huge mustard tap roots with little effort. I do agree that hand pulling weeds can be very therapeutic. Give you time to think about problems, solutions, and come up with all sorts of ideas for things. It's kind of my "me" time, meditation time. But I do less of it now because of recent foot surgeries that make it harder to get up. Love your videos, and appreciate that we can go back into your library to refresh our knowledge as we start our seeds and plant. Thanks!
Like you, I enjoy hand pulling weeds. I spend a little bit of time each day using the tool you showed in the beginning, and the qweds are very manageable.
I have that second weed tool and I love it.
I'm in north central KS and bindweed is my arch nemesis. The stuff. Won't. Die. I haven't tried a weed burner yet either, but it's crossed my mind!
Spurge! My garden nemesis! I hand pull unless I find a stubborn weeds with deep roots, dandelions for example. Then I just use my trowel.
Georgia , mostly grasses...here. Hula hole is the BEST!! LOVE IT mine is the most used tool in my gardening!
Lots of great info and a great deal, to boot! This old woman had to have that standing weed digger. Thanks for the coupon code.
I do a modified no dig garden and use cardboard between my rows/plantings. I mix compost with a nice top soils and build freestanding 5-7" beds to plant into. This is done to avoid destroying my inground watering system for my lawn. I use irrugation tape for the veggies. A deep straw mulch around my plants helps keep even more weeds at bay. But, like you, I have a few areas that are out of control since I've mot yet planted them. This digger tool may be a great help to me. I have the other one already, and have found it useless in my heavy clay soil. Perhaps due to my being a senior, it's not something I will ever use again.
I have used the “Flame Weeder” early in the fall, especially when it’s wet outside..and it works great… your are right, good idea to keep a water hose near…. I set the fence on fire a few years ago…. Thanks… Tom in Tigard Oregon
Knee replacement prevents bending on my knees. When I saw your demonstration my reaction was "Holy sh........' Thanks for the link and the coupon :O) It looks pretty well like a must have!
Hi Brian, we are from eastern north Carolina and we have plenty of weeds. Number one, wire grass, it is the worst and the most evasive. We also have dandelions, pigweed, and many more.
Thanks for the videos and info, it's always helpful and entertaining.
Oh wow! That tool looks awesome for harvesting dandelions!!! Usually I just buy dandelion root online because it is so much work to dig them up.
I do have a favorite weed-- California poppies!! Also, strangely enough, culinary chervil!
Those prolific, tiny weedlings you sprayed.... those are the bane of my existence! They are ALL over my yard and get worse every year. They've made their way into my containers, too. Looking forward to trying some of these tactics out on them. Thanks!
Very interesting video on a problem we all share and struggle with. Raised beds make it easier for elder gardeners to deal with for hand pulling and dense plantings leave less room for weeds.
Thanks for the tips. I use ground cloth in some parts of the garden, it is great. As well, mulching other parts. I agree, get the weeds early, and regularly.
I have a variation of that weeding tool and I love it.
I’m in San Diego too and the Bermuda grass is my nemesis!!!
Great ideas! Thanks!!
Love all the background shots.
I love weeding! You are right, is relaxing. I throw myself on the ground and just pull weeds. I can spend a lot of time doing that. I tend to do it by hand but I think that little tool you have can be useful for those long roots.
I love my hula hoe!!! I even have a little hand miniature one my son bought for me and I love that too!! ‘Always love your videos
I'm in Northwest Kansas. So far this year I am battling silver thistle, puncture vine, fire weed, and of course dandelions. I assume musk thistle will be prolific some July. Thank you for all your tips and tricks. Love watching your videos. So far my favorite way to weed is hands and knees pulling/digging.
Every house in my neighborhood here in GA had Bermuda grass sod put down when the houses were built. I hate it so much, but also realize its pointless to re-sod, since it would just creep back in from my neighbors' lots and destroy whatever I put in. I mulch my landscaping every year and it always finds its way into the beds. I usually spend an hour a week on my hands and knees pulling it up. One year I put down a landscaping fabric and managed stave it off for a season, but by the following year it found its way back in. I've just given up at this point and accept that I'll be spending time every season pulling it up. I might try the Captain Jacks though and see how it does. Even if it doesn't kill it, it might slow it down enough to make the hand weeding process a littler quicker. Thanks for great content as always Brian!
I hated weeding when I was losing the battle. Now I make sure it is part of my weekly routine, and now I'm winning. I plant to accommodate weeding, and do the hoe plus a small hand "scythe" to weed between, and do it weekly. After a while the seedlings shade out the weeds and the burden gets less and less. I also tarp beds for summer crops until planting time -- that crushes weeds and I've seen zero impact on the soil (more worms than in my normal beds). Weekly weeding also allows you to notice volunteers - I've noticed a lot of borage and cilantro volunteers that I can select to keep growing. On their timetable germinated where they did, will be strong plants.
I live in the pacific northwest, Bremerton. Dandelions are my big weed.I use what I call a dandelion picker. Looks like a screwdriver with the fork ed end. Once the dandelion is pulled out I put a vinegar salt solution down the hole. In the early spring I go through and get the weeds then over the rest of the summer fall I can just spray the babies when they pop up. I have done this for 33 years. It is pet friendly and kid friendly. I do find it relaxing and therapeutic. A couple of summers ago we moved and I said no more. However last week I was out around some containers and found myself picking the Dandelions close by. It was relaxing. So now it is not my ultimate goal to do all the yd this way but I can will do sections as I choose.
Crab grass, buttercups, and morning glory.
Yep!! Weeding is very relaxing
Brian , I ALWAYS learn something from your videos and I often share it with others who appreciate the new ideas. I now have a little notebook of ideas that I keep handy because I honestly can’t remember all the things you have taught me. I do have trouble working on my knees ( and have already had one surgery. ) But I recently bought one of those thick cushions to kneel on and that does help - I had a thin one but it wasn’t enough. I also find if I do a little at a time it doesn’t bother me as much. I am in nj and I am not sure if it is a weed but it seems to be wild onions? (At least that is what they smell like). They grow everywhere and have little bulbs in the dirt. So you need to totally dig them out or they always come back.
I can add my recommendation for the handheld weed puller. Bought it after watching Brian's other video and love it.
Hi Brian. Love your videos. I’m fairly new to gardening, but your videos make me very successful. You were demonstrating the standing weeder. Here in Canada I was able to get one years ago, made by Fiskars. I only have one hand and find this tool invaluable for maintaining the lawn and staying ahead of the weeds. Now I do find the tool leaves a bit of a hole in the grass when pulling tap root weeds, so what I do is go around adding grass seed and a bit of good soil. After a good daily watering, the hole disappears and and within a week grass has replaced the dandelions and thistles. My most hated weed is creeping Charlie/Jenny (not sure which one I have), I can not get a head of it and of course the neighbours are dealing with it as well. So it just takes one of us to lag behind and it takes hold again. 😖 Keep up the good work. Always looking forward to your next videos.
Love your videos! Yes weeding is relaxing as kickboxing could be 😂 Seriously, I love to do it in spring when the Houston weather is nice. Later is horrible🥵! Few years ago we got an invasive strawberry weed in the lawn… that’s been the tougher one. Thanks for sharing with us!💚
I'm so happy, I'm not the only one that has burmuda grass as number one. Looks like I'll be looking for the long handled weed gadget . Thanks for the tips as always. Yes, there's a need for a video on weeds. Who would have thought. Hmm
Central Fla, crabgrass, Bermuda grass and dollar weeds in the yard that is, small garden ,mostly hand pulling. great video!
I feel the same about weeds! Hand pulling is therapeutic for me.
Poa Annua in Georgia. Hand pulling. If you get it before it goes to seed subsequent years it's less. Always weed after a rain if possible, SO much easier.
Great tool!!! I cannot get on my knees either but just bend over and pull my weeds. Garden too small for this tool. I have a weed that looks like a strawberry plant with runners, here in Elkridge, Maryland. I have very few weeds because I've planted as much of my teeny garden front and back with flowers and now veggies in grow pouches. To combat weeds growing between layered tiles, on my patio and walkway, I purchased several rubber mats in primary colours and they stifle the weeds. YOU are funny- loved your ending !!!!
So needed this❤❤ Due to health issues my garden is overtaken with every weed known to man here in Zone 8b😢 However I just ordered the standing weed puller using your coupon code ❤❤❤which should help tremendously so thanks so much for always sharing such timely and beneficial info!!
I use a claw hammer for weeds with a weeds with a taproot. I have bad knees, but I can bend over easily. The weight of the hammer helps me dig deep. Very satisfying. Especially for sticker burrs here in Texas.
Thank you Brian. Your right get them early. Lol easier said than done. Take care
The chimney in the background is looking good.
Bindweed is unbeatable we just pull it up. The grass with white pointy roots always try to get in . I ditch around our plots to keep an eye on the grass and clover roots. Springfield Illinois
As a San Diegan who lives by a canyon, I can assure you may carefully remove every weed every year, and your large, open property will still get new ones every year. Wind, birds, rodents, etc., will see to it. 😁 Keep on pulling!
I live in Alberta, Canada, in a really old part of town where most of the houses are 100+ years old. A VERY common weed in older neighborhoods here is called Creeping Bellflower. It was brought over by settlers because it's actually very beautiful. When it blooms it has very pretty, very tall, purple bell flowers. The problem is that it spreads like nothing else, and grows from tubers that are often 6+ inches underground. No matter how much you pull up the leaves, the tubers just put out more and more. And those tubers store SO much energy, I regularly pull up tubers that are 6 inches deep, further 6 inches long, and as thick as my thumb. They spread like crazy, choke out everything around them, and they pull so much nutrients from the soil to build their carrot sized roots. I've basically accepted that this will be a fight for the rest of my life here, the best I can do is keep it at bay.
Alberta! We have been getting the wildfires haze here in IL, hope you are on the easterly side of the winds/ away from fires,..you likely can't use torching to eliminate weeds in town either. Good note about ornamental plants going awry, we have buckthorn problems, invasives that were once considered beautiful in gardens...I always hear of introduced plants that go invasive to North America....does anyone know if there anything native from North America that goes invasive in other parts of the world? ..just curious..
Your new favorite step on weeder tool is very much like my "Grandpa's Weeder" back saver, since I can no longer get on my knees. A miracle tool for dandelions and hard to pull thistles. And your other tool is similar to one i have with tines that actually works like a small farm disc, only by hand. Very handy tools indeed. and No you are NOT the only one with 2 foot tall weeds! LOL
Great tools and pointers
🎉and thanks a bunch😅
I'm in NE Oklahoma, and I am constantly fighting sand mat in all of my raised garden beds! I also battle crab grass, or something that looks like it. Thanks for the information. Have a blessed holiday weekend!
I'm in SW Virginia and like my grandmother always said you will never get rid of crabgrass and taxes. She was 78 when she passed and that was 40 years ago and yes I still have both
In Manitoba we have quack grass. I pulled up some patio blocks that had been put down by the previous owner (at least 25 years ago) and found 2 layers of heavy duty plastic that had been put down underneath them. Under the 2 layers of plastic and in between them the quack grass was still alive!
I agree with you about hand weeding. It’s me against the weed! It’s one thing I can control…..
Thanks for tips I have big back yard I do pull seeds by hand it is lot's work ,😍😍😍
Another excellent video Brian. Like you my wife finds weeding therapeutic. Doing some weeding after work was stress relieving for her which is good because I can’t stand the activity. I do the sowing and planting so a complimentary set of activities. Our most annoying weeds here in Scotland are Mares tails and bind weed. Our last two houses have been new builds so we are never sure where the topsoil comes from. As an observation it would appear that if you disturb the soil you can get an outbreak of either or both. I know a lot of people will not agree with this but we have found that we have to resort to glysophate and that will take several years to sort out. We had a remodel of the rear garden last year and this year we’ve got an outbreak of Mares tails. The cottage garden is coming along. All the best from Fife😊.
I do have to admit. I complain about my weeds but I also find it therapeutic to hand pull them. North Carolina here, and I battle stiltgrass, wild strawberry, chickweed, and currently liriope spicatta that has run rampant. I've declared battle and decided to tackle a few areas for about a half hour after work each evening. I've flagged my 3 day weekend to continuing the battle. I'm making headway which is very satisfying.
I live in Sherwood, Oregon. My nemesis is grass. Its between my gardens, so it grows inside. I will find Captain Jacks, and try to bring this to an end. Plastic in the rows may help too. I love that long tool! I can't bend down anymore, so I need this. We love dandelions, as we feed them to the chickens.🐔❤
